im new to ms sql server, having previously used mysql. How do i make a auto number field? What datatype shall i use for it? like autonumber for mysql.
Ive tried setting my primary key field to uniqueidentifier data type but then i still need to manually add a guid key in there. i want it so it automatically generates a unique key everytime i add a new row. is this possible?!

I am doing a shopping basket type demo.I have difficulties going from table with fields like (Name,ProductCode) to table(Name, ProductCode, NumberOfItems). One way could be adding just Name and ProductCode fields and let NumberOfItems come automatically. It could have some common value like 1. How should I do this with VB.

We have the following two tables :
Link ( GroupID int , MemberID int )
Member ( MemberID int , MemberName varchar(50), GroupID varchar(255) )
The Link table contains the records showing which Member is in which Group. One particular Member can be in
multiple Groups and also a particular Group may have multiple Members.
The Member table contains the Member's ID, Member's Name, and a Group ID field (that will contains comma-separated
Groups ID, showing in which Groups the particular Member is in).
We have the Link table ready, and the Member table' with first two fields is also ready. What we have to do now is to
fill the GroupID field of the Member table, from the Link Table.
For instance,
Read all the GroupID field from the Link table against a MemberID, make a comma-separated string of the GroupID,
then update the GroupID field of the corresponding Member in the Member table.
Please help me with a sql query or procedures that will do this job. I am using SQL SERVER 2000.

I know this may be in the wrong forum, but I have a question. I am working on a system for a video store. I have rentals and sales for videos. I have set the ID fields for rentals and sales to be autonumbers and increment by 1, but I would like to have an S in front of sales IDs and R in front of rental IDs at all times. It is kind of like a constant in all autonumber ID fields. I want the S and R to be in every ID field, but the number to change. Thanks.

I'm importing data from an Access table and, of course, one field is a primary key. This field needs to be an autonumber. The problem is the data I'm importing isn't sequential.
Can I import the data, then alter the table to make the column increment or is there a way to create the table and make the field increment, but import non-sequential data?

I have developed a web database application using ASP and MS Access, however the requirement for hosting the application is that it must use an MS SQL Server database. I converted the database to SQL without any problems, and many features of the application work under SQL Server except the 'add record' function. I realised there isn't an 'autonumber' field in SQL Server (which i use as the primary key for many tables), but an 'int' field. I considered pulling out the latest int from the database, incrementing it manually and adding the new record with this number... i also noticed there is a 'unique identifier' field.
Is there a quick solution for this problem?

I am building a simple table, populated by ASP form, where every record should be assigned a unique ID. When working with Access I used `autonumber` datatype to keep track of every record. Can something like this be done with MS SQL server, if not what do you think is a good way to solve the problem ??

I have 3 table (tbl1, tbl2, tbl3).
tbl1 colums ---Pid(autonNumber),Pcode(unique values),PGuid
tbl2 columns---Pid, CatId,Fid
tbl3 Colums----Pid,BundleId
The user will upload 1 excel(CSV) sheet 500 rows. I managed to bulkupload to tbl1. But how do I get the all Pid generated (after the uplaod) from tbl1 and insert into Pid of tbl2 and tbl3. Any ideas or code example will be more appreceatable. I am using asp.net with sql 2000, but expecting some kind of lead to get started.

in customer_account table, the same custID repeats and relates to an
accountID and each account has its own balance.

I have asked this question on 3 forums now and never get an answer, I don't know what is so hard about this question but I will try it here.
I am using SHA512 in C# to convert a password and its salt to hashed. I need to store the password hash and the salt hash in the database in two fields. I was told to use binary field to store the hash data and that the output of SHA512 would ALWAYS be the same no matter how long the password is.
I modified this hash example to use only SHA512 and to work with byte array instead of plain text.
All I need to know now is what size I need to make my binary field to hold this password that is hashed.

Say I have a password which is 30 characters max, and a salt which is 16 characters max. The password and the hash are stored in seperate fields in the same table. They are both hashed using SHA512 and are both being stored as byte arrays in C#, what size to I need to make the binary data type in order to hold the password, and to hold the salt.

is there any way i can make a field in a table accomodate more than 1023 charcters? i used the 'varchar' datatype and used a length of 2500, but still, I can't fill up a field with more than 1023 characters. Is there any way to change it?
Also, is there any way to used a symbol or special character in a field? Can SQL server identify such a character? like the alpha or beta symbol...

I am using a standard graph report where i want to hide some of the series fields.
This is not working at all.
I hid all the series fields but all were still showing.
Is this a bug in SQL 2008 or am i missing something.
All i did was right click on the series -> Series Properties -> Visibility -> Select Hide

Now the querry is retriving the record for anitha, it shouldnot happen. The querry should retrive the record of anitha only for where condition anitha and not for Anitha or ANITHA etc..

I have a current table which I create on a regular basis from a text file with a layout similar to this:

This text file is brought into a staging table with each field (even the amount field) as a varchar (12). I then assign types in a later step in my DTS package.
What I need to do is stack the riders under each policy so for each policy where there is a rider, there is a new row for every rider.
So in the example I've given, there would be 2 additional rows for the original first row since there are two riders.

I plan on doing this by first creating a table with just the Type, Policy #, and Amt fields, and then using a series of insert queries where I take the rider (if there is one) and append it onto the table.
However, I'm getting the following error message when I try:
Server: Msg 213, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
Insert Error: Column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition.
Basically, it wouldn't let me put an 'R1' in the Type column.
How can I get this to work!?!?

I want to use a Make Table Query to generate a new read-only Table. This I can do but my problem is that I want to be able to name the new Table containing only the records from a calendar year; e.y. Rents2001 and the next year another new table would be created and called Rents2002 and next year Rents2003 ...............
I require the Table to be generated yearly. I know I could do this in other ways but I really require the Table as once I have it I will be doing other things with it to give the final report.

I have one table (PermProportionalCosting) that contains employeecode, costcentre and proportionpercentage. An employee may have two or more records in this table, indicating that their salary has been split across multiple costcentres.
Another table (Employee) contains a default costcentre for each employee.
Another table (TransActualHistoricalMaster) contains the hours paid to each employee for each pay period.
My query so far selects all employees and the total hours worked from the TransMaster table, and then selects the costcentre and proportionpercentage from the PermProportionalCosting table. Multiple lines are created for all employees in the PermProportionalCosting table, with each line indicating the proportionpercentage and associated costcentre.

I want to take a table (SQL server) and show all it's data in a form of INSERT... (text file)
so that I can show it on a web-page and just paste the INSERT text into a MyTableData.sql
and then I can just run this script on the Query analyzer and fill my table with data
I need it so I can backup my DATA both in English and other languages...
