how to create a role playing dimension in SSAS. Like If I have a period dimension table with a key named as per_key and fact table which has keys named as from_per_key and to_per_key .Now both the fact table keys need to be connected to the Period dimension per_key.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had come across an issue where the icons in the dimension usage tab of the cube are not being displayed properly, for example if you use a many-to-many the little blue infinity sign is missing. It is a little annoying.
SP2 with BIDS helper, not to sure if BIDS helper did it or SP2, sure it was fine before
Anyone know how to fix it?
Cheers
Matt

Hi, dear friends,
Just found that I am not able to ignore the name column property for role-palying dimension even though I only select one of the key columns for this dimension in the mining structure where the role-playing dimension is used? E.g I have a fact table (which is the case table for the mining structure) which is related to the role-playing date dimension. The schema is as following:
Dim_event_day_time_key
Dim_carrier_day_time_key
Dim_domain_day_time_key
.....................................
and other attibutes in the fact table.
When I dragged the 'hours' attribute from the dim_day_time table to the mining structure, if I left the key columns of 'Hours' as the above 3 columns, then I have to select a name column, by then I dont have a name column in the dimension table yet. Therefore I want to jsut select one key column as the key of that role-playing dimension in the mining structure, but then I am not able to ignore the 'name column' property as it still always asks me to select the 'name column' for that.
Therefore my question is: we are not allowed to select only one key columns in the mining structure for the role-playing dimension? And we will have to always go to the data source view to create a named calculation as the new column for the role-playing dimension?
Hope my question is clear for your advices and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
Thanks a lot in advance.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,

I have a requirement to set Description values for our cube dimensions and attributes.Â
I've done this for regular dimensions but I cant seem to find a way for role playing dimensions. I can set the base dimension descriptions but not the 'clones'. Is this possible?Â

I am modelling cube in SSAS. Cube has around 20 dimensions and 6 fact tables. Some of the dimensions are common among the fact tables. e.g. Time dimension. Fact_PNL has 3 date columns for those we have 3 role playing dimensions in the dimension usages.
Another fact table has 5 date columns for them as well we have separate role playing dimensions in dimension usage tab. We have a common dimension Company which is foreign key in all fact tables. We might need to combine the data from multiple facts to get final output.
Should i create 6 role playing dimension for each of the fact table or use the same dimension for all fact tables?
Role playing dimensions should be created when we have multiple columns pointing to the same dimension ?

Hello,
I have installed SQL server 2005 enterprise edition on Windows 2003 virtual PC (full installation). The installation went through successfully. However, after install completed, I cannot find any of the client tools under the start menu -> all programs -> Microsoft SQL server 2005 menu. The only item listed under the SQL server 2005 is Configuration Tools, which is used to configure the database server.
I have tried to install the client component again (in case I didn't install them at the first place) but the installation process cannot be started since it detected that the client components have been installed already. I can also see the sql server native client running in the services.
The server engine is working fine since I can connect to that sql server using another machine where I have the client tool (SQL server management studio).
One of my friends has exactly the same problem. He installed the sql server 2005 Standard edition on windows 2003 server (full installation), but the client tools are not showing up in the start menu either.
I also checked the location for the SQL server management studio (Microsoft SQL server/90/Tools/Binn/VSShell/Common7/IDE), there is only one folder called publicAssemblies listed under. Is this correct or something is missing?
Thanks

I am new to SQL Server. I tried to read as much as possible in newsgroups prior to this post. I have tried several different ways to install this without success. The last time I attempted to install as a local service and I unchecked hide advance configuration. I am running Windows XP SP2 with all the latest updates. Is there a solution to install this properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a small power outage and after that, SQL Server (2000) is not starting. I press the start button, it looks like it tries to do something (since all the buttons get disabled) and then its back to square one. I tried this from command line: sqlservr.exe -c -f but it does not help either.
I checked the SQL Server logs and this is what I found:

Dear Friends,I cannot start my SQL Server 2005. When I'm trying to conect to local database it's showing me error:TITLE: Connect to Server------------------------------Cannot connect to WIN2006.------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. It should be decompressed to start server. What's this? I'm seeing this kind of error first time. Need your advise guys!

My SQL Server 7.0 was working for the last number of months until last night. When I came into the office this morning, it was down. I tried to restart it. It started and then shut itself down after about 10 seconds. I have tried to get the properties of the SQL Server, but I get an error message of "A connection could not be established to "the server name" - Communication link failure ConnectionWrite (WriteFile())..
Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties."
The computer has been rebooted, twice. SQL Server is set to automatically started on boot up.
Can someone shed some light on this?
Should I re-install SQL Server?
Thanks

Hi
I have a problem starting my SQL server. It all started when I had a database that has been trying to restore for days. I followed the instruction give by Kevin J McCarthy - (I did not follow the instruction correctly) - put a trace flag at start up flag 3608 -T3608. However, I did that within the Enterprise manager - under profile. Stopped the SQL server and tried to restart. It will not restart. I tried putting a /f flag at start up - this time under the NT service startup dialog box, I started the database, but I cannot access the SQL Server because of invalid login. In the NT event viewer, it has this message
Your profile was not successfully loaded, but you have been logged on with the default system profile. Please correct the problem and log off. (5)
I know I entered the correct login and password because I am the administrator. Please help!
Thanks in advance

I created an empty database on my PC and then restored from a backup file successfully.
Now I cannot run SQLServer or any related program.
Rebooting does not make any difference. When I attempt to start any SQLServer program I get a dialogue appearing with the Fatal Error message :
"Execution cannot continue as the language dependent resource file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server80ToolsBinnResources3081SQLSVC.RLL could not be loaded"
I have searched for the Resources3081 directory and do not have it. I suspect that there is some incompatibility with the database I loaded although it seems strange that it successfully loaded to completion.
As I cannot even start SQLServer I can't drop the database or do anything.
HELP!
Ideally I would like to be able to get the database running however my second choice would be to at least get SQLServer running so I can at least run my other databases.

Hi All...
I am knew to SQL 2000 running it on Win 2k server SP4.. when MYDOOM came out last Monday, since then my SQL SERVER 2000 is acting weird.. my server was not affected but since then when I turn on my SQLSERVER, SQLAGENT.exe utilizes 99-100% of CPU making the server unresponsive.. I cant even "End Task" it, caz it would say Access Denied even when I am logged in with Admin account. When I start SqlMangr.exe it does the same thing..utilizing 100% of the CPU. I have tried reinstalling SQL Server 2000, but when it comes to the point of restarting the server, my server hangs and I have to cancel the installation. Tried installing SP3, didn’t work.. osql.exe started using 100%.. I have no clue what to do.. Please Help me.. I have tried disabling the Network Connections and starting the services but same thing happens.
I can’t even open Enterprise manager, it hangs up the server.
I would really appreciate any kind of help.
Thank you

hello all,
I am using SQL Server 2000.
I am facing a problem since yesterday that my sql server does not start.
It gives me the error that 'Could not start sql server. sql server does not exists or access denied....Instance already running' when I try to start or connect to the server.
I changed Authentication mode from WIndows Only to Sql Server and Window a week ago. It worked fine. Then I changed it back to WIndows Only. When I did that, server is not starting up. it is set to automatically start with operating system. But when I restart my computer, even then server does not start.
What has happened to the server? Is it because of Authentication mode change that I mentioned above or something else?
Please help me! I need to start it soon and make 3 new tables and some new stored procedures. I am stucked.
please help!
Thanks in advance.

I am running SQL Server 2005 Developer edition. However, I can't get it to start up.In the SQL Server Configuration Manager it states that 'Start Mode' is automatic. However this doesn't seem to be the case. Since when I turn on the machine its current state is 'Stopped'Then when I try to rick click and start the service, after a short time (~20s) I get the following message;"The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other other applicable error logs for details"I've had a search around however, I've not managed to find the error log. Where is this? or any other suggestions would be appreciated. I'm tempted to just start again and reinstall. However, I would rather understand what the problem is.Dougal

I can't connect to SQL Server 2005 Express. I've only just noticed this problem but I have not been using it (SQL Server) for a while as this problem is on my home machine which I have not recently used.
When I open SQL Management Studio I can't connect at all using any of the protocols with Windows Authentification. (Shared Memory / TCP-IP / Named Pipes) nor have I tried SQL authentification as I don't remember the admin password.
I have made some changes to this PC recently.1) Installing VS2008 pro trial from the DVD download.2) I added a DVD writer with associated software Nero (but I just uninstalled the Nero software because it gave me a feature I hadn't asked for - the desktop search - which takes tons of memory)3) Running the network setup network wizard from a floppy. This PC is on a LAN connected via a Workgroup.4) Added PC Tools Spyware Doctor.5) I upgraded the RAM to 1.0 Gb.
I can't say for sure that SQL Server was working or broken after any of those changes above. Any or none of them could've caused the problem.
When I upgraded the RAM it was initially faulty and I had to put a different RAM module in.
I can't even run 'SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting'. When I try to run it, after an initial dialog opens I see nothing.
Nor can I run SQL Server 2005 surface Area Configuration to "Add New Administrator". I get the same error (see below) telling me that I can't connect.
Nor was I able to run any of the SQL Server sp1 downloads - I get told that all SQL server components are already installed.
This is running on an ASROCK mobo with an AMD Althon XP 2000+ cpu, 1.67GHz, 1 Gb RAM, Win XP sp2 with just about all the microsoft patches apart from IE7 (I'm still using IE6 on this PC).
This doesn't look like it has a solution. Should I uninstall SQL Server completely and then try to reinstall it?

Hello,
We stopped one of our SQL Servers from the SQL Enterprise Manger earlier. For some reason it doesn't want to start back up. I deleted the SQL Server registration for that box in my SQL Enterprise Manager. Tried to register it again and got the error message: "General network error. Check you network documentation.|ConnectionOpen(connect().
I restarted the box. The SQLServerAgent services were configured to start automatically, but they don't start the server. I tried to do it manually, didn't help.
Is there any way to start the server from the DOS command line, or some other way?
Thank you very much.
