How Do You Extend The Expression Langauage With New Functions?

Jun 2, 2006

Hi,

I have a number of functions which I'd like to be able to add to the expression language to avoid having to use numerous script components, but I can't find any information on how this is possible. Can anyone provide any advice, please?

Thanks in advance,
Lawrie

UDF Or Trigonometric Functions In An Expression For A Derived Column?

May 24, 2006

Hi all!

I am importing data from a CSV to a DB with a SSIS package.
Among some things things it already does, it has to decide if the relation between one row and the following is acceptable.
If it is not, the 2nd row is discarded, the next one is taken and the relation value is calculated again to decide whether to keep this one or not, and so on.

To calculate this value, I need to apply a formula that includes sin(), cos() and acos() functions.
I have already written this formula as a scalar-valued function in my SQL Server.

So, my question is:
- Is there a way to call a function (a UDF) within the Expression in a Derived Column dataflow item?
and if not,
- Hoy can I use trigonometric functions within the Expression in a Derived Column dataflow item?

I hope someona can tell me something about this... I'm falling into despair! :-s

Thanks a lot!!

Reporting Services :: DateDiff Functions Using Expression

Sep 30, 2015

I have a field called end date which can be empty to I have it coded to set todays date if empty using the following

=Iif (Fields!actual_discharge_ date. value Is Nothing, Today(), Fields!actual_discharge_date.value) which works fine.

The problem is I have to figure length of service which is coded as=

DateDiff("d", fields!approved_start_date.value, fields!actual_discharge_date.value)

Which works except when there is no actual discharge date. it will not see the current date that the first expression adds but still shows a huge negative value.

Transaction Log Failed To Auto Extend

Sep 6, 2001

Hi

Had a weird error yesterday, can anybody shed any light on it.

I got the following error in a SQL 7(sp2) database.
'The log file for database 'IT2PROD' is full. Back up the transaction log for the database to free up some log space..
Error: 9002, Severity: 17, State: 2'

The Transaction Log has unrestricted file growth and auto grow file set and the disk has over 20gb of free space.

The only explanation I can think of is that the Log tried to extend during the hourly backup. Would this cause the above error ??? The backup file is usually about 80mb but was over 300mb when this happened.

Any ideas ????

Thanks in advance

Extend Existing Report Items

Hi,

I'm totally new to SSRS2005 and I was wondering if I could extend the existing report items. For instance, I'd like to add a few extra properties to the textbox report item. I tried wrting a custom Textbox control that inherits from System.Windows.Forms.Textbox. When I imported the dll in VS, the new textbox showed up in the toolbox, but it was grayed out.

Any idea what I'm missing here?

Thanks,

Conditionally Extend Query With Clauses

Jan 14, 2008

Howdy folks, first time poster.

In a UDF, how is the best way to extend a query with additional clauses based on expressions? The user input here is used to refine the basic query by introducing additional clauses. Is there something like the following?

-- The basic query
SELECT column
FROM table
WHERE clause

-- Additional clause, only appended to query
-- if expression evaluates to true
IF @parameter <> default_value
BEGIN
AND additional_clause
END

Right now I'm using CASE like the following, but it necessarily makes the query longer. Is there a more efficient way?

-- The basic query

SELECT column
FROM table
WHERE clause

-- Additional clause, should only effect result
-- set when the parameter is not default_value
AND table.column =
CASE @parameter
WHEN default_value THEN
-- identity, table.column=table.column,
-- should have no effect other than just a long query
table.column
ELSE
@parameter
END

DB Design :: Steps To Extend Table Partitions

Jun 1, 2015

SQL 2014 I've inherited a db that has several partitioned tables.  They are partitioned by month.  We're approaching the last partition, 11-30-2015, so we need to extend the tables.  My question is how do I do this?  There are Partition Schemes and Partition Functions setup at the db level.  I've figured out how to ALTER those.  Next I go to a table that I know is partitioned, right-click Storage and select Manage Partitions.

My only option is to "create a staging table for partition switching".  Not knowing what switching is, I'm not sure if this is what I want to do.  All I want to do is add new partitions to the table - and remove some of the old ones since they are empty due to archiving of data.

So, what is the proper steps to adding new partitions to a table that is already partitioned?

How To Setup Table Boarder Extend To The End Of Page?

Nov 7, 2007

Hi all,

Does anyone know how to setup the "table details" to take up all the space in a page (extend the boarder to the end of the page) even there is only one record in the table details?

Normally, for example, if you got a table in a report, if the table has only one record, the boarder of table will only take up maybe 1/4 of the page space (header, 1 line details, footer). if the table has 5 records, it may take up half of the page, but the boarder of table neven extend to the end of the report and i wwant it happen!!!!!!! Thank you.

Bryan

Transact SQL :: Updating Table Rows With Overlapping Dates (extend)

Dec 2, 2015

This question is extension from the topic Updating table Rows with overlapping dates:  .....

I am actually having a table as following:

Table Name: PromotionList

Note that the NULL in endDate means no end date or infinite end date.

ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag
1 1 2015-04-05 2015-05-28 0
2 1 2015-04-23 NULL 0
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 0
4 1 2015-04-23 2015-05-29 0
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 0

And I would like to produce the following outcome to the same table (using update statement): As what you all observe, it merge all overlapping dates based on same promotion ID by taking the minimum start date and maximum end date. Only the first row of overlapping date is updated to the desired value and the flag value change to 1. For other overlapping value, it will be set to NULL and the flag becomes 2.

Flag = 1, success merge row. Flag = 2, fail row

ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag
1 1 2015-04-05 NULL 1
2 1 NULL NULL 2
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 1
4 1 NULL NULL 2
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 1

The second part that I would like to acheive is based on the first table as well. However, this time I would like to merge the date which results in the minimum start date and End Date of the last overlapping rows. Since the End date of the last overlapping rows of promotion ID 1 is row with ID 4 with End Date 2015-05-29, the table will result as follow after update.

ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag
1 1 2015-04-05 2015-05-29 1
2 1 NULL NULL 2
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 1
4 1 NULL NULL 2
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 1

Note that above is just sample Data. Actual data might contain thousands of records and hopefully it can be done in single update statement.

Extending from the above question, now two extra columns has been added to the table, which is ShouldDelete and PromotionCategoryID respectively.

Original table:

ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag ShouldDelete PromotionCategoryID
1 1 2015-04-05 2015-05-28 0 Y 1
2 1 2015-04-23 2015-05-29 0 NULL NULL
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 0 N NULL
4 1 2015-04-23 NULL 0 Y 1
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 0 NULL NULL

Should Delete can take Y, N and NULL
PromotionCategoryID can take any integer and NULL

Now it should be partition according with promotionid, shoulddelete and promotioncategoryID (these 3 should be same).

By taking the min date and max date of the same group, the following table should be achieve after the table is updated.

Final outcome:

ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag ShouldDelete PromotionCategoryID
1 1 2015-04-05 NULL 1 Y 1
2 1 2015-04-23 2015-05-29 1 NULL NULL
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 1 N NULL
4 1 NULL NULL 2 Y 1
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 1 NULL NULL

Extend GetUserID Function Or Create Additional Custom Information Funcitons

Jan 25, 2008

Hi there

I'm relatively new to Reporting Services and .Net development so bear with me if I've missed something obvious.
I've set up Reporting Services to run under forms authentication successfully.
I want to filter the data (both within Report Builder Models and .rdl files) to the company the user belongs to.

To avoid joining the users table to all other tables on the companyID I'm wondering if it's possible to create a custom funciton which could use the UserID to lookup the companyID and then pass this through as a parameter, and have this "GetCompanyID" function available when building Models and/or reports...???

When building a model the Information Functions available are GETUSERID and GETUSERCULTURE. Is it possible to modify how these work and/or create additional functions here???

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,
Todd.

SQL Server 2005: CLR Functions Vs SQL Functions

May 26, 2006

I was playing around with the new SQL 2005 CLR functionality andremembered this discussion that I had with Erland Sommarskog concerningperformance of scalar UDFs some time ago (See "Calling sp_oa* infunction" in this newsgroup). In that discussion, Erland made thefollowing comment about UDFs in SQL 2005:>>The good news is that in SQL 2005, Microsoft has addressed several ofthese issues, and the cost of a UDF is not as severe there. In fact fora complex expression, a UDF in written a CLR language may be fasterthanthe corresponding expression using built-in T-SQL functions.<<I thought the I would put this to the test using some of the same SQLas before, but adding a simple scalar CLR UDF into the mix. The testinvolved querying a simple table with about 300,000 rows. Thescenarios are as follows:(A) Use a simple CASE function to calculate a column(B) Use a simple CASE function to calculate a column and as a criterionin the WHERE clause(C) Use a scalar UDF to calculate a column(D) Use a scalar UDF to calculate a column and as a criterion in theWHERE clause(E) Use a scalar CLR UDF to calculate a column(F) Use a scalar CLR UDF to calculate a column and as a criterion inthe WHERE clauseA sample of the results is as follows (time in milliseconds):(295310 row(s) affected)A: 1563(150003 row(s) affected)B: 906(295310 row(s) affected)C: 2703(150003 row(s) affected)D: 2533(295310 row(s) affected)E: 2060(150003 row(s) affected)F: 2190The scalar CLR UDF function was significantly faster than the classicscalar UDF, even for this very simple function. Perhaps a more complexfunction would have shown even a greater difference. Based on this, Imust conclude that Erland was right. Of course, it's still faster tostick with basic built-in functions like CASE.In another test, I decided to run some queries to compare built-inaggregates vs. a couple of simple CLR aggregates as follows:(G) Calculate averages by group using the built-in AVG aggregate(H) Calculate averages by group using a CLR aggregate that similatesthe built-in AVG aggregate(I) Calculate a "trimmed" average by group (average excluding highestand lowest values) using built-in aggregates(J) Calculate a "trimmed" average by group using a CLR aggregatespecially designed for this purposeA sample of the results is as follows (time in milliseconds):(59 row(s) affected)G: 313(59 row(s) affected)H: 890(59 row(s) affected)I: 216(59 row(s) affected)J: 846It seems that the CLR aggregates came with a significant performancepenalty over the built-in aggregates. Perhaps they would pay off if Iwere attempting a very complex type of aggregation. However, at thispoint I'm going to shy away from using these unless I can't find a wayto do the calculation with standard SQL.In a way, I'm happy that basic SQL still seems to be the fastest way toget things done. Reporting Services :: Running Value Expression Within Lookup Expression In SSRS?

Oct 28, 2015

I have created 1 report with 2 datasets. This report is attached to the 1st dataset. For example,1st one is "Smallappliances", 2nd is "Largeappliances".

I created a tablix and, the 1st column extracts Total sales per Sales person between 2 dates from 1st dataset (Small appliances). I used running values expression and it works fine.

Now, I would like to add another column that extracts Total sales per sales person between 2 dates from 2nd dataset (Large appliances). I am aware that I need to use Lookup expression and it is giving me the single sales value rather than the total sales values. So, I wanted to use RunningValue expression within lookup table to get total sales for large appliances.

This is the lookup expression that I added for the 2nd column.

=Lookup(Fields!salesperson.Value,Fields!sales_person.Value,RunningValue(Fields!sales_amount.Value,
sum, " sales_person"),
"Largeappliances").

I get this error when I preview the report. An error occurred during local report processing. The definition of the report is invalid. An unexpected error occurred in report processing.

First/Last Functions In SQL?

Mar 12, 2007

hello Im having a difficult time translating this query from Access to SQL because it uses the First/Last functions.

I have a 'Projects' Table and a 'Project_Comments' table, each has a 'Project_ID' field which links the 2 together. What I need to do is retrieve a Project List from the Projects Table and also the first Comment of each project based on the Commend_date field in the Project_Comments table. This is the MS ACCESS query:

SELECT Projects.Project_Number, Projects.Project_Name, First(Project Comments.Comment_Date), First(Project_Comments.Notes)
FROM Projects Left Join Projec_Comments ON
Projects.Project_Number = Project_Comments.Project_Number
GROUP BY Projects.Project_Number, Projects.Project_Name

Now I can use Min() for the Date instead of First, however I dont know what to do with the Notes field. Any help on how to get this over to sql would be greatly appreciated!

Functions Help

Jun 3, 2008

Hi,

I have created a function that returns a comma seperated list of product id's from a table. I need to call this function from a stored procedure to help filter my product results, something like the following:

SET @SQL = 'SELECT dbo.Products.ProductID FROM dbo.Products WHERE dbo.Products.ProductID IN (' + dbo.GetModels('dbo.Products.ProductID', '') + '))'

The problem I am having when executing the above is:

"Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'dbo.Products.ProductID' to data type int."

Can anyone shed some light on how I can call the function, feeding through the product ID from the row of the select statement I am trying to execute (if this makes sense).

Any help would be great.

SQL Functions

Aug 10, 2007

Hello,

I've created a function that performs modulo. I understand that SQL server 2000 / 2005 uses % for modulo, but we have an application that was written for Oracle. Oracle has a mod(dividend, divisor) function.

As to not rewite the queries, I would like to implement the function below:

the function executes properly but I must prefix it with the dbo schema.

Net: I can execute --- select dbo.mod(9,2) and it returns a 1 just like it should.

but I can not execute --- select mod(9,2) I receive the error "'mod' is not a recognized function name." on SQL 2000 and 2005.

If I can execute select mod(9,2) then I won't need to re-write any queries.

Also, on SQL 2005, I have tried to adjust the default shema, and the execute as clause, but neither helped my cause.

I'm going to try building the function in the CLR, but I think I will be faced with the same problem.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Tom

create function mod
(
@dividend int,
@divisor int
)
RETURNS int
as
begin
declare @mod int
select @mod = @dividend % @divisor
return @mod

Functions In Functions

Hi,

I have to calculate data in function with "EXEC". During runtime I get the Error:

I would use a Stored Procedure, but the function is to be called from a view. I don't understand, why that should not be possible. Is there any way to shut that message down or to work around?
btw: Storing all the data in a table, would mean a lot of work, I rather not like to do. ;-)

Thx for any help

I just installed SSRS 2005 and I have experience with SQL.

How come this function does not work?

SELECT SUBSTRING(YEAR_MONTH, 1, 2) AS Expr1
FROM table1

I get a message which states that this command is not supported by the provider?

It works fine with other SQL tools like winsql?

thanks
