I've posted a few questions on what we dba's let the developers do in a production database and the consensus seems to be not to let them issue DDL cmds e.g. create table, views ... This brings me to this question on how do you handle the developers requests for changes in a production database. If anyone is willing to post their requirements I'd really appreciate it. I'm thinking about a master excel sheet on that would contain fields for the request but I want to make sure I'm getting everything that I need.

I have a question about the best method to ensure the proper flow of control within a package. I have three related SQL tasks €“ A, B, and C €“ that must execute in sequence. If any one of the tasks fails then the remaining tasks should not execute because each is dependent on the previous step. (A €œsuccess€? precendence constraint.)
Likewise, I have a second set of SQL tasks €“ 1, 2, and 3 €“ that must execute in sequence. Task 3 should never execute unless tasks 1 and 2 have been successful.
I consider these to be two independent logic paths in the same package and, indeed, when I run the package both task A and task 1 begin running at the same time.
What I€™m not sure of is how to add a new task €“ Z €“ that will execute only after both the A-B-C and 1-2-3 task paths have completed. Diagramatically, this would be like having a €œcompletion€? constraint linking task C to task Z and another €œcompletion €œ constraint linking task 3 to task Z. In other words, the two independent paths merge at task Z. Task Z is an audit step that must always run €“ it emails summaries of the database activities performed by the other tasks.
What has me puzzled is how I get to Z when there is a failure in either the A-B-C path or the 1-2-3 path. As things stand now, the package will never reach task Z if there is a failure in an earlier task because they are joined by a €œsuccess€? constraint.
I thought I could get around this by using a €œsequence container€? but I discovered when I added A, B, and C to a container that I couldn€™t use the €œsuccess€? constraint I needed. I was just guessing that this might be the way to do it.
Can anyone help me with a best practice approach to the control flow issue I face? I€™m new if that isn€™t apparent by my question, so don€™t be afraid to make your answer simple and plain.

I have been asked to create an online form. Not that we haven't done change control in the past but most just come in a form of an e-mail, and it's more of the reason for the change and the code to run.
So I'm just curios as to what other people do. I haven't found anything on the net.
I'm starting with requiring the database instance name, object owner, object name, object type, the desired change, and date requested.
I need to know if the anyone has had success using any sort of tracking tool to manage schema in SQL 7. I'm responsible for several SQL servers, each with upwards of 10 databases - most still in deelopment phase. We use Erwin to store our models and Visual sourcesafe for stored procs and sql scripts. But now as a Dba I'm looking either:
(1) create a custom database to keep track of schema changes (as they movefrom development to test to prod). OR
(2) buy a 3rd party tools to keep track of schema changes? Platinum?
It's getting too much for a single Dba to manage a busy devel shop with 20 db's. Schema is comming in too often. Only some of our db's are in Erwin.
My company is looking at change control software. I've looked at a couple but they don't support SQL Server 2000. Does anyone out there use a tool that will work with 2000? We use a tone of functions that the tools don't seem to have build in. Every thing else is fine. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Hi all. Looking for information on whether or not the control/navigation bar that appears at the top of the report view can be changed. I am specifically looking to remove it and assign its controls to other .net or html controls/objects. For example, the control bar has the arrow for viewing the next page. Instead of that, perhaps I might like to have a hyperlink etc somewhere else on the page that performs the same functionality. I have searched and searched for information on this but haven't been having much luck. It's kind of a difficult thing to search for due to ambiguous key words "control bar" "navigation" etc.
Not looking for specific info as to how to go about doing it, more like: what is possible and where can I go to find the specifics.
I have created an ASP.NET website with a ReportViewer on. The report renders fine, but when I change one of the parameters (manually), the report seems to invalidate itself and a blank while area is drawn. I would like the same behaviour as in the WinForms variant, where rhe rendered report remains the same until the 'View Report' button is pressed.

SQL Server 2005 Two databases Two end points - 1 in each database Two stored procedures: SP1 is activated when a message enters the sending queue. it insert a new row in a table SP2 is activated when a response is sent from the receiving queue. it cleans up the sending queue.
I have a table with an update trigger In that trigger, if the updted row meets a certain condition a dialogue is created and a message is sent to the sending queue. I know that SP1 and SP2 are behaving properly because i get the expected result. Sp1 is inserteding the expected data in the table SP2 is cleaning up the sending queue.
In the Sql Server log however i'm getting errors on both of the stored procs. error #1 The activated proc <SP 1 Name> running on queue Applications.dbo.ffreceiverQueue output the following: 'The conversation handle is missing. Specify a conversation handle.'
error #2 The activated proc <SP 2 Name> running on queue ADAPT_APP.dbo.ffsenderQueue output the following: 'The conversation handle is missing. Specify a conversation handle.'
I would appreceiate anybody's help into why i'm getting this. have i set up the stored procs in correctly?

Hi All, I am placing a Matrix inside the table control for grouping requirements,but when we export the report to the Excel, the contents inside the table cell are ignored. Is there any way to get the full report exported, as per the Requirement.Please help me with this issue.
We have implemented our service broker architecture using conversation handle reuse per MS/Remus's recommendations. We have all of the sudden started receiving the conversation handle not found errors in the sql log every hour or so (which makes perfect sense considering the dialog timer is set for 1 hour). My question is...is this expected behavior when you have employed conversation recycling? Should you expect to see these messages pop up every hour, but the logic in the queuing proc says to retry after deleting from your conversation handle table so the messages is enqueued as expected?
Second question...i think i know why we were not receiving these errors before and wanted to confirm this theory as well. In the queuing proc I was not initializing the variable @Counter to 0 so when it came down to the retry logic it could not add 1 to null so was never entering that part of the code...I am guessing with this set up it would actually output the error to the application calling the queueing proc and NOT into the SQL error logs...is this a correct assumption?

UPDATE #2: When it said "Do you want to install Microsoft SQL Server" I said "yes" and that caused it to work. I exited and re-ran and now the print runs w/o the "install SQL Server" (If the prompt had said "Do you want to install the print dialog" we wouldn't be having this discussion...)
UPDATE: After posting this i discovered that the same thing occurs when attempting to print the report direct from IE6: First a dialog pops up "Do you want to install this software?" Name: Microsoft SQL Server. When I click "Don't Install" I get the dialog "unable to load client print control." Since this happens direct from IE6 I suspect it's browser settings. I'll resume tomorrow and post a followup.
My WinForm C# app integrates Reporting Services by calling them from WebBrowser controls. The problem is attempts to print cause a dialog: "unable to load client print control."
I've read prior posts that say "enable Active-X in your browser" - I don't know how to do that from a WebBrowser control.
Any ideas how to support Reporting Services "Print" from within a WebBrowser control?

We ran into weird/interesting issue with below details.

We are using SQLCMD to run DDL script on our product database in below order. That script has below content.
step # 1 - database collation change (case -sensitive) statement as very first statement of the script step # 2 - Actual DDL SQL statements step # 3 - database collation change back to original (case insensitive)
When we execute all above 3 steps in single script using SQLCMD on our test_server#1 , it is successful but when same is being implemented on test_ server#2 , it is failing.We ensured that there is no other user accessing the db and setting on both the server are all default/basic. Separating out all 3 steps in 3 different script working fine. This is only problem when we combine them into single script and fire it using SQLCMD. If it is something related to session/transaction then we should hit same issue on our test_server#1 server as well but that is not the case.test_server#1 and test_server#2 has exact same database/data, just two different physical machine & SQL Server instance.
Is it possible to catch and error and then keep the process going in a stored procedure? So if an update encounters a primary key violation on a row, is it possible to skip that row and keep the process going?
Hi! I have some try .. catch block trying to insert some data into database. During its action duplicate key row insert error could raise, for example. The question is how could I know distinguish it from other sql errors? Object ex (Catch ex As Exception) has only message property '{"Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.Group_Courses' with unique index 'IX_Group_Courses'.The statement has been terminated."}' and type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException. Knowing the type of error is not enough, because there are different SqlExceptions. Even the message is not unique for this error, because now i deal with 'dbo.Group_Courses' and then it could be other table. Is there something that unique identifies each error? For example error code. If it exists, where could I get it? Thanks in advance!
I test my the now function and it is getting the right date. When I try to send that to the sql database I have it turns it into 1/1/1900. Does anyone know why this is happening, I have tried everything Here is my code:
Hi, I would like to handle a sql error in t-sql and return a certain value in case error occurs. For example if I would like to add a record I want to return a certain identity value or maybe a status of transaction (0 for incomplete, 1 for succesfull trans). If error occurs in sql I cannot return any values back to asp.net because of What I am doing at the moment is catching an error in asp.net and then displaying an error message. Is there a way to return only a return value to asp.net and somehow handle the error in t-sql? Thanks
I don't know what's wrong with SQL2000 setup, the problem is: whenever I execute a query with a date/time such as 02/02/200, SQL give me an error message saying that the date is "Out of Range".
I'm having trouble with something and I was hoping that you could point me in the right direction.
Here's the scenario: I have a VB application that clients use to add records to a SQK 2K DB. The info they have added that day is shown in a grid. They have the ability to edit items in the grid, and then update those changes to the database. The problem is that sometimes they change the values to something they shouldn't. To combat this I've started experimenting with check constraints. In query analyzer I test the constraint by trying to update an entry to an 'illegal' value. When I do this, I get an error saying: "Server: Msg 547, Level 16, State 1, Line 1" and the change is not made. What I'd like to do is to give the user a dialog box notifying him of the error. Is there a way to have a sub-routine or stored procedure be triggered when a message of this type is generated?

I have a need when a Update, Insert or Delete is done to a record in DB "A", it will send the appropriate UID to a different table in different DB "B".
My first thought was to have a trigger on the table in DB "A" simply call a stored procedure on DB "B" and do the UID.
However - my question is what is the best approach and what's the best way to establish the connection to DB "B" for the UID from within DB "A"? We can't use linked servers - DNSLESS string would be the preferred connect way. Not sure how to execute it within a trigger.
Is even using a Trigger to Stored Proc the best way?
What about Transaction Replication - which I've never attempted - is that a better way?

I build a local cube from a relation database. In the database there are 1:n relations. Is there a way to handle 1:n relations? For example: I have a table LOGGEDFLAW and a table LOGGEDREASON with a 1:n relation between them. We create a select statement of these tables and as an result we get duplicate records of LOGGEDFLAW each time more than 1 record of LOGGEDREASON are associated to 1 record of LOGGEDFLAW - this is the standard result I get with an relational JOIN operation. Now I want to count the LOGGEDFLAWs without the duplicates generated by the 1:n relationship.

There are two tables Table1 & Table2 If I will insert in table1 then related data fields will be auto updated in table2 , similarly based on the data in table2 table1 data needs to be updated.
Now the sync of table1 & table2 is working fine.
My prob is we are handling the updation/insertion from the UI screens . Two separate screen for each table. When we have multiple user accessing the screens say - User1 updates table1 and User2 updates table2 then we need to implement the locking so that at one time one screen will allow updation in the table1 and hence table2. The other screen shouldnt allow updation in table2 and hence in table1.
This is very common locking functionality ...but am not getting any way to implement it , Please advise.
