How Do You Handle Diagrams And Updating To Production?

I am using SQL Server 2005 Express and the table diagrams and everything works great locally. However, pretty soon I'll have to create the same database structure on the production server (hosted remotely at DiscountASP.NET) and I'm not quite sure what's the best way to go about doing that. I only need to copy over the data for a few tables (ones with enumerated values, for instance), but the rest I only need to create the table structure (what's the point in copying over test users for instance).
Also, any future modifications to the database structure will need to be updated to the server along with code updates. How do you all handle this? Do you keep an Excel file of database modifications that you run when you perform an update? Or is there an easier way?

I have an ASP.NET web application using the default ASPNETDB that I did in VWD 2005, and deployed to a production server (IIS).
I need to make a table addition to the production database (ASPNETDB). I'm trying to use SQL Management Studio to attache the database, but it keeps saying the database is locked by a process. I shut down all the services that would likely be using it, but it's still showing locked. What do I need to shut down to attach the database to make the change?
Or is there a better way to do it?

I need to update about 1.3 million rows in a table of mine.
I am getting the data from one of the columns of the same table and
updating the new column.
I am doing this using a cursor which I have put in a stored procedure.
As this is a production table which users might be accessing.It is a
web based application and I can't slow the system down.
So I am willing to run the stored prcedure during off peak hours.
However, do I need to put this in a transaction?
If I did put it in a transaction what type of isolation level should I
opt for?
Data integrity is very important for me and I don't mind to compromise
on the performance.
I am doing this because one of the columns which has "short description"
entry is has become too small for business purposes and we want to increase it's
length from varchar(100) to varchar(150).
As this is SQL 6.5, I can't increase the lenght of the column.
So Iadded a new column and will run the stored proc.
What precautions are to be taken?
This is on a high priority basis and very important too.

I'm using service broker and keep getting errors in the log even though everythig is working as expected
SQL Server 2005
Two databases
Two end points - 1 in each database
Two stored procedures:
SP1 is activated when a message enters the sending queue. it insert a new row in a table
SP2 is activated when a response is sent from the receiving queue. it cleans up the sending queue.
I have a table with an update trigger
In that trigger, if the updted row meets a certain condition a dialogue is created and a message is sent to the sending queue.
I know that SP1 and SP2 are behaving properly because i get the expected result.
Sp1 is inserteding the expected data in the table
SP2 is cleaning up the sending queue.
In the Sql Server log however i'm getting errors on both of the stored procs.
error #1
The activated proc <SP 1 Name> running on queue Applications.dbo.ffreceiverQueue output the following: 'The conversation handle is missing. Specify a conversation handle.'
error #2
The activated proc <SP 2 Name> running on queue ADAPT_APP.dbo.ffsenderQueue output the following: 'The conversation handle is missing. Specify a conversation handle.'
I would appreceiate anybody's help into why i'm getting this. have i set up the stored procs in correctly?
i can provide code of the stored procs if that helps.

We have implemented our service broker architecture using conversation handle reuse per MS/Remus's recommendations. We have all of the sudden started receiving the conversation handle not found errors in the sql log every hour or so (which makes perfect sense considering the dialog timer is set for 1 hour). My question is...is this expected behavior when you have employed conversation recycling? Should you expect to see these messages pop up every hour, but the logic in the queuing proc says to retry after deleting from your conversation handle table so the messages is enqueued as expected?
Second question...i think i know why we were not receiving these errors before and wanted to confirm this theory as well. In the queuing proc I was not initializing the variable @Counter to 0 so when it came down to the retry logic it could not add 1 to null so was never entering that part of the code...I am guessing with this set up it would actually output the error to the application calling the queueing proc and NOT into the SQL error logs...is this a correct assumption?

I am trying to create a new db diagram.
I selected my db -->right-click on Diagrams--> New database diagram -->Select some of the existing tables in the wizard-->finish and....
I don't see anything else but an empty screen
When I tried to edit an existing database diagram, by right-clicking on it -->Add existing table and selecting a new table from the list, I got an error message: "Co Initialize has not been called."
Could you help me on this one, please?

I am very new to SQL Server 2005. I have created a package to load data from a flat delimited file to a database table. The initial load has worked. However, in the future, I will have flat files used to update the table. Some of the records will need to be inserted and some will need to update existing rows. I am trying to do this from SSIS. However, I am very lost as to how to do this.
Any suggestions?

Subject says it all; how do I copy diagrams from one SQL2K database to another? (This is coming up because I'm converting collation sequences by DTSing data from DB1 to DB2, where DB1 was copied from SQL7 and DB2 was created with the collation I want. It gets tables and views, but not Diagrams and Stored Procedures. )

Do you need to be a member of the dbo role or an sa on a particular sql server to create a database diagram? I just want to confirm this is the case.

In our organization, we are using SQL Server 2005 Management studio as the client interface to access all our enterprise Databases.Most of the databases are built on SQL 2005 DB Server.
However, We have one of the Database built on SQL Server 2000, which also has Database diagrams in it. Though We are able to view all the DB objects through SQL 2005 managment studio interface, but unable to view the diagrams.
I understand that, the binary data of the diagrams are stored in "dtproperties" table on SQL 2000 but in SQL 2005, it is stored in "sysobjects"(not sure) table and both are entirely different.
Following are my questions.
1.Since the DB is still on SQL 2000,How can we view the diagram objects thru the SQL 2005 Enterprise manager.
2.For the migration process of SQL 2000 to SQL 2005, How can i migrate the database diagrams.
Appreciate the responses.

I am using SQL server 2000 and I would like to create Database diagrams but It doesn't give me any option to crate one. It only shows "Working with SQL Server 2000 diagrams" and "Refresh" with no "create new diagram" and in other servers it but its only in my desktop that doesn't and I have full access

I upsized an access backend to sql 2005. In the process, the relationships were lost. When I go to the database in Sql, right click on database diagrams, all I get is refresh and a link to go to learn about database diagrams. How can I recreate the diagrams?

I am trying to follow this walkthrough<br><br>http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms233763(VS.80).aspx<br>And getting nowhere as it says I need to set up database diagrams which I cannot due to not being in db_owner role, or not being valid db user etc etc.I cannot find out how to set this up for the database I created so far in t his tutorial.I have searched and searched and got nowhere.I then went into SSMSE by chance and found a load of roles but none named db_owner. I then tried to add my database file but SSMSE wont let me drill down into the required folderI weep!!!!Please can anyone help?

When I start SQL Server Management Studio from my development PC and connect to a remote SQL-server, I do NOT see any Diagrams.
When I use Remote Desktop and connect to the server, and the open SQL, I see the diagrams.
Is there a way to get the diagrams to work on my local machine?

I am trying to make DATABASE DIAGRAMs....I have restored a database called Tel from a backup file...n in that i have all the tables and procedures..now whenever i m clicking on its DATABASE DIAGRAMS it gives me the error as:

Hi all, I have a database that is duplicated on 4 different SQL Server 2000 servers. I created a database diagram in one of those identical databases using EM, and thought I would like to copy it across to the other 3 databases. I can't find any way to do that though.
Any ideas? I can right-click and copy the diagram in the source server/database, but can't "paste" into the second server/database's Diagrams directory.
I know the diagram is created from the objects in the dabase, but mine required some customization and it would be really cool if someone has a silver bullet I could borrow to make the diagrams in the other DB's match up to the formatted one.

I remember I asked the similar question before.But I have not solve this.
I am working with SQL Server 2005. I just make a copy of the production database.
I use "tasks -> Generate Script" to copy the table structure and use "tasks -> import Data" to copy Data. But I can not copy the database diagrams,I need to keep the primary keys - foreign keys relations.
Please let me know how to copy database diagrams.I try many ways but I can not figure it out.

I€™ve just installed SQL 2008 Express CTP. Everything seems to be fine except that the folder €śDatabase Diagrams€? is absent in the tree of SQL Server Management Studio. It is the same for newly created databases and databases upgraded from 2005 Express.
Any ideas how to get the diagrams back?
