How Do You Lock Table (or View) Fields From Editing???
Jul 20, 2005
Hello:
I have an Access 2K form I built from a SQL Server 7.0 view. I want to
lock certain fields in the database from users so they can see them on
the views and forms, but NOT be able to edit them.
I've looked in BOL, MS SQL Server web page and SQL Server 7.0 books and
could not find how to do this.
Is there possibility to edit easily data type "text" field using standard tools such as SQL server 2005 Management Studio or Server Explorer in Visual Studio 2005 Professional. I want multiline editing akin to multiline textbox in Windows Form. I understand that something may be written/generated in Windows Forms , but I want this possibility for any table. My pressing "Enter" to create another line for in-place editing just leaves a text cell for the tools mentioned above.
I have a text field with about 17,500 rows I need to edit from for example: '1.90X .90' to '1.90X 0.90'? The numbers are various but follow the basic format albiet they may vary to say '22.78X .40'
Hi,I use view to join difference table together for some function. However, when the "real" table fields changed (e.g. add/delete/change field). Theview table still use the "old fields".Therefore everytimes when I change the real table, I also needed open theview table and save it by SQL enterprise manager manually for update theview table field. Can we use a SQL command or other method to update it directly?Regards,Silas
Hi, I think the title explains it all really. I cannot configure the SqlDataSource to add Insert, Update and Delete statements - not through the wizard anyway. The view combines two tables, each containing 3 columns. I have tried using different combinations of columns, and ended up selecting all of them (making sure the foreign key column of the first table was given a different alias to the primary key column of the second table) but I still cannot enable editing. Cheers, Patrick
I want to lock a table so others cannot lock it but able to read it inside transactions.
The coding I need is something like this: set implicit_transactions on begin transaction select * from table1 with (tablock, holdlock) update table2 set field1 = 'test' commit transaction commit transaction
I have tried the coding above, it won't prevent others from locking table1.
So, I changed the tablock to tablockx to prevent others from locking table1. But this will also prevent others from reading table1. So, how can I lock table1 so others cannot lock it but still able to read it?
Is there anyway possible to edit table design with data already entered in the table. If not, is there anyway I can cut and paste the info back in. Ive tried importing to access and then back to SQL, however, when i tried to view my table design in ASP.NET webmatrix, it gave me an error.
How can I create a Table whose one field will be 'tableid INT IDENTITY(1,1)' and other fields will be the fields from the table "ashu". can this be possible in SQL Server without explicitly writing the"ashu" table's fields name.
We have a SQL Server table that needs to be maintained by the actuarial department. Therefore, I was going to have them make changes to the table using something easy like Microsoft Access 2000. When I go into Access and create an ODBC link to the table, I cannot change the data. (i.e. The insert new record feature is greyed out.) I CAN change the data via Enterprise Manager, so I don't think it is SQL Server security. Any other ideas?
For prototyping purposes, is there a tool that reads a database's schema and generates (simple) table editor that allows manual editing of data. It would be good if the tool somehow made it easy to add foreign key values to reference data e.g. gender, status, ...I can kind of do this using Management Studios "Edit Top 200 Rows", but I was wondering if there is a more user friendly tool out there.
Hi All !I open a table in Query Analyzer by right clicking on it andselecting 'Open' and when the data is displayed in the view pane Iwould like to be able to edit it. It seems however that tables markedas read only (as shown on the top bar e.g. SQL Query Analyzer - [OpenTable ServerName.DBName.dbo.TableName(read-only)] ) can not be editedwhereas the one that do not have that attribute infront of the name Ican edit. Is there a way I can change the read only attribute of atable so that I can edit data directly in the view pane? Please let me know if there is !Thanks a heap ! :)Harkirat
Hello,I'm wondering if there is a way to concatenate two fields or a field and astring value in a single field in a view?Where in Access I might write;[field1] & " (m3)" as TotalVolumeis there a way to do this in an SQL Server View? Thanks!
Hi all,I asked a similar question a few weeks ago but I didn't explain myself to well so I was hoping for some more input.I have created a webpage in Visual web developer that contains a gridview that points to an SQL table. All works well as far as searching the table and sorting. The SQL table itself is Droped ( deleted ) and then re-created every 1 minute from a query to a linked DB2 database so that we have a "live" table of our DB2 system but in SQL.....However,There is now a requirement to be able to ADD data to this SQL table. eg: a comments field.. from the website. My procedure for re-creating the SQL DB is now useless as any data added through the website would be lost when the table gets re-created.What is the best way for me to achieve a permanent table in SQL that gets updated from the Linked server DB2 but that I can also add comments from the front end (Website Gridview)..I'm assuming some sort of update query and a join to a seperate, permanent table that contains the comments?.Please help. Ray..
In my database I have a table for Users, with an int primary key, and a table for Connections, with a combined primary key consisting of two UserID foreign keys. (the smallest first)
At the point I am stuck I have one UserID, lets call it current_user, and a column returned by a select statement consisting of UserIDs. Some of these IDs will likely be smaller than current_user, and some will likely be larger.
What i need to do is construct a view of two columns, combining each of the UserIDs in the column I have with current_user, with the smallest UserID of each pair residing in the first column, and the largest in the second column.
The point of this is to then SELECT the connections identified by the UserID pairs.
I suspect I could accomplish this if I could set individual fields in the a view, but I seem to have missed (or forgotten) that lecture. Anybody want to clue me in?
I'm using a view where I do a few things, including merge two short text fields into one. Just wanted to know if there was an alternative way of doing this:
Example: SELECT first_name + ' ' + last_name AS full_name FROM names
It works - but it seems rather blah. Is there something that'd be more "proper"?
Hi,I have an Access application with linked tables via ODBC to MSSQLserver 2000.Having a weird problem, probably something i've done while not beingaware of (kinda newbie).the last 20 records (and growing)of a specific table are locked - cantchange them - ("another user is editing these records ... ").I know for a fact that no one is editing records and yet no user canedit these last records in the MDB - including the administrator -while able to add new records.Administrator able to edit records in the ADP (mssql server) where thetables are stored. Please help, the application is renedred inert .Thanks for reading,Oren.
When my colleague makes any change to a query containing a derived table, the word 'WITH' followed by a lot of graphical characters appears after the alias, rendering the query unusable. We have tried this with various existing and new, simple queries, all to no avail. We are editing the queries in Visual Studio 2003, and he does not get this effect when using Visual Studio 2005. I can edit the query in 2003 on my laptop with no ill effects.
Is there a limit on the number of fields that can be displayed in a table object in a data source view in SSAS 05? One of the tables (the fact table) in my data source view is displaying only 50 fields. The table actually has many more than that. One of the fields that is not displaying is a foreign key that I need to link to a new dimension table. I have tried refreshing the view, but it doesn't bring in any additional fields.
I've a DateTime field in a table and I want to separate it into two fields in an SQL Server 2005 view one for Date and the other for Time so What is the function I can use to do this process?

And how did I get 4 errors? - I only set my script task result to failure
I have a list of items in one table and a field (pageName) in another table that may contain one of the aforementioned items somewhere within that field. There is no fixed position within the field where the itemNo may be so I can't just use SUBSTRING(pageName,2,5) in(select itemNo from tblItem).
Logically, it's like I need to combine IN and LIKE: select pageName where pageName LIKE IN %select itemNo from tblitemNo%..LIKE can only handle one comparison string.
Hi,all: This problem almost drives me crazy, hope I can get some hints from you guyz!!! Ok, here is the situation: I wanna only one users 2 modify the data(update) from my page each time, and if at the same time, there are some other users connecting my database through .aspx page, they can only browse the data until the first users finish updating. It seems I need to implement locking the database, but I am not sure how I am gonna do that using asp.net!!! Thanx in advance!
hi, i have an application that updates some records in sql tables, and i want to do a web application that updates records in the some database-table(sql) so, my question is how can i lock the row or table so i dont have concurrency problems.tnx in advance.
Hello Friends, I am having a VB application running for the SQL SERVER DB. The VB application is installed on the multiple of PCs in the network. Now when I am trying to fetch the same from all the different PCs simultaneously, its amazingly fast. But the issue comes when I am trying to update the same table (but different rows) from the different PCs simultaneously. The time taken is directly proportaional to the number of users. I am not getting what could be the problem? Can any one suggest me the approch? Is it some related to table / row / page locking? As all the connections are trying to update on the same table. I checked the isolation level. Its default, "READ COMMITTED". Kindly suggest...
Hi,If I run an insert statement from the query analyzer and then try toopen the table from enterprise manager then it takes long time to openthe table. But this problem dissapears when i put the statement insideBegin/End Transaction statement.Any idea why this is happening?Thank in advance.Taw.
Which lock type or isolation level should I use to be sure that no onewill read or write or do anything with the table I'm using?Code block should look something like this:lock tableread value from tablechange value to new_valueupdate table set value = new_valuerelease lockWhile I'm changing the value absolutly no one should be able to readfrom the table.
