How Do You Specify Special Characters As Flat File Delimiters?

I have a flat file that has fields delimited by tilde {~} and rows delimited by {CR}{LF}. The problem is, my source is spitting out the {NULL} (&H00) at the end of the row.
The data displays correctly in the pre-viewer (with a non-print symbol at the end of the last field), but gives an error when I try to run the package.
Example:
€œdata€?~€?data€?~€?data€?{NULL}{CR}{LF}
I can process the row in c# using:
€œ
€?
as the row delimiter. What is the equivalent notation for SSIS?

Hi,
I have a flatfile which is of the following format. I want to import this data into the sql server 2005 database.
The alphabets at the start of each line represents the type of record. The data are position specific.

We're having issues exporting a set of data from SQL to a fixed width flat text file by just doing a right click on the DB, then choosing Tasks > Export Data. You can not specify a row delimiter when you choose a Fixed Width format. The only way around this that we've found is to specificy char(13) and char(10) at the end of the SQL select statement. Without row delimiters you end up with 1 giant record rather than 20,000 regular sized records. Is there any other way around this that we're missing?
Using Ragged Right is not an option either since the record lengths will be inconsistent if the last field doesn't contain a consistent length to the data.

Hi everyone,
There is a small problem encountered while creating a package in sql
server 2005.
Actually i am using a flat file which has 820 rows and 2 columns which
are seperated by line feed(for ROW) and tab(for COLUMN).after
importing i found that ther are only 800 rows imported into the table.
Ather verifying the input file i found out that there are some null
values in the second column so there is no line feed for those
values.
Can anyone please help me how to give multiple delimiters for the same
input flat file.

I have the misfortune of converting a DTS package to SSIS that loads a flat file that has a text fields that can contain embedded text delimiters ("), column delimiters (,) and even new lines (CR+LF i.e.,hex 0D 0A) in it. A sample line from the file is posted here, remember this is just one line though it shows as three lines, since the third field has embedded new line in it:

Now, SSIS errors on the embedded text delimiters and breaks into two or three lines based on which option I chose. I have tried few options based on postings in the forum:
a). Using undouble and undoubleout: Does not work when there are embedded column delimiters (,) in the text field
b). Modified undouble script posted by lvovg at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1718225&SiteID=1. Handles the embedded column delimiters (,) perfectly, but the embedded new lines (CR+LF i.e.,hex 0D 0A) are breaking it.
Since, I am using the ragged right format to read from the file then use transform script on the line by lvovg, the line is already broken by the ragged right format at the embedded new lines, hence does not work.
Right now I am stuck. Can someone please help (anyone from MS) ? I am already baffled at the amount of coding required to convert a very basic ( and working ) flat file load DTS package to SSIS. I am willing to persist bit longer to convert this to SSIS, before I give up and stick with DTS and wait for a fix / workaround.

Hey Everyone,
I have a Data-Flow task embedded in a Sequence Container (does not fail component on error) on the Control Flow panel of the SSIS designer. This data flow task contains a connection to a Flat File Source -> A Data Transformation -> Into an OLE Db Destination.
The problem is that the Flat File isn't always delimited properly -> the client cannot be relied on to do this.
My question is when the delimiters are messed up, how can I capture the offending error row(s) from the Flat File Source?
What I've tried:
1) Set every column in the source flat file on error to: Redirect Row
2) Added a Script Transformation to pull the description and the record id out of the offending row
3) Added an Error file flat file destination to the end of the flow.
The package always fails on the Flat File Source and never Redirects the offending Row to the error output - I never see my onError Script Transformation go Green, Red, or Yellow - SSIS doesn't let it get there.
I'm really new to SSIS so sorry if this is a super basic question.
Here is the Error Text:
[Source - InventTable_csv [1]] Error: The column delimiter for column "RECID" was not found.
[Source - InventTable_csv [1]] Error: An error occurred while processing file "C:------InventTable.csv" on data row 15228.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The PrimeOutput method on component "Source - InventTable_csv" (1) returned error code 0xC0202092. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: Thread "SourceThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0047038.
I do have the MaxErrorCount set to 1 on the Data Flow Task but still think I should see my script task execute and a log entry be generated.
Any Ideas?

I am trying to import a file to a db table from a mainframe system. When I look at it on the PC has some special characters in it. They look like nulls and or tabs. When I try to define the fields in DTS, I only see up to the first special character.
I tried to write a quick VB program to strip them out, but when VB is reading the file they get stripped out before I see them in the program.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a gazillion text files, each with dozens of records. The fields are pipe-delimited, the end of each record is marked by ASCII char code 28.
example:
05|11900307|1|CO|Gervais|Neil|NG8880|F|540|0|0|0|T|0|||F|||F 05|11900307|2|AO|MARSHALL|BRAD|BM7843|F|510|60|0|0|T|0|||F|||F
The " " is the Chr(28). The line above should parse into 2 rows...

An interesting discovery - if I paste that " " directly into the row delimiter box, without quotes or brackets, I get two records!
So I found at least one answer.
Is there another?

Guys ,
I have generated a pipe delimited file using bcp option.
I am getting the ouput for some columns as some some special characters(boxes). When ,I have checked my source data in few columns the data is stored with single space.I can see this special character when opening with editplus only not with notepad.
This flat file will be used to load into oracle table.because of this reason all the rows are failing.
Do ,I need to fix this space issue in my stored procedure
Any suggestions.. to avoid this special character when generating the flatfile.

Here's one for the group:
I have a fixed-width flat file. Within some of the rows, I have embedded NULL characters. The inherit problem is that NULL characters are string terminators, so using a flat file source doesn't allow the capturing of these NULL characters or any characters after the first NULL character -- only the string up to the NULL character.
So, within SSIS, what would be the best way to replace NULL characters with a SPACE character? My file is fixed-width, and replacing with a space will allow me to keep the length the same. I am not opposed to running a script task against the file first (before using my flat file source), but would need some guidance as I'm not a .Net guru, by any means.
Unfortunately, going to the bank to have them correct this file has proved fruitless. We're going to have to deal with these characters on our side.

I have a package that reads a fixed width flat file data into a single CHAR column in an sql server 2005 table.
In the "Columns" tab of the Flat File Connection Manager, I set the RowDelimiter value to {LF} and nothing for the ColumnDelimiter (since I read the entire row from the flat file into a single column in my sql table).
However, in the "Advanced" tab, the ColumnDelimiter Misc property shows {LF}. This was working fine for me.
The problem I was facing was with some files which were recently identified to have rows containing a special character (probably ASCII ZERO) in the middle of the row. So, now if the record was having 400 characters and the 200 th character had this special character, the package was writing the first 200 characters into the sql table and ignoring the rest of the characters.
I am sure that the special character was ASCII ZERO - I wrote a script to read each character in the line and find the ascii code for it.
Has anyone faced this problem ever. If so, pls let me know your solution or any ideas that can help sort this problem. Your help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
I an concatenating a string using char(187) as the separator. When I run the command "select char(187)" I get the symbol >>
However, when it writes to a csv file it is showing as an overscore instead.
Is there a known problem with special characters when writing to files?

Our SQL 2005 databases have "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS"
collation settings on the server. One of tables has one column declared as "ntext".
When we try to insert "‚¬" character directly trough insert statement and retrieve it, we're getting right results. When we use web-services to insert data with this character (euro), and retrieving the data back, we're not getting this sign back. We are getting some characters like little squares. If I try to copy and paste them into notepad, I am getting ???
However, when I tried to place them here, I got them right:
‚¬ Å Å¡ Ž ž Å’ Å“ Ÿ
How can we assure visually they are inserted properly?

On the bills that our system generates there is a comments field that users fillout. We have occasional problems with special characters in the text messing up the validation code. Does anyone know of a query that can identify special characters in a text field? Like carriage returns, tabs, etc.?

Iam working on sql server 7.0.
I have to bring in data from a text file into the sql server database. I use the BCP utility in pulling the data.
The flat file data contains special characters like ®. This is the registered trade mark symbol. When I bcp the file using the character mode the special characters are automatically changed to «. So If I am going to pull a data like ACRYLON®, after the BCP I get it as ACRYLON«.
Inorder to replace all these I have written a program but since it has to scan every record the time taken is more. Will in be possible to accomodate iun the BCP to pull the data with special characters.

I have an DB in SQL Server 7, and in Portuguese we have special characters like "á","õ",etc. And I want to let the visitor to a site to do a search (written in ASP), and not to need to write the correct way (without the accents). But either he writes or not in the correct way, the results are the same, not necessarly in the same order. Is there a SQL Server mechanism that permits this functionality, without doing a very complicated SELECT (takes a lot of time) or replicating a field in the DB (takes a lot of extra space)...

I have a problem inserting German special chracters into a MSSql table.
üöäÖ works fine, but ßÜÄ are reduced to "_". I'm using a html form and a php script to enter the data into the database. Any idea why this isn't working? Funny thing is, when I use a german version of the SQL Server it also works without a problem... but I need this to work on ANY mssql server. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Currently I have got a report where I want to insert special characters (like @, !, ?) at the end of a String which will be displayed in a textbox of the report. Wenn I insert the String value "test!?" the report will return this value "!?test".

I've looked for information about this but to no avail. Essentially why does Reporting Services not support spaces and special characters in a Field Name?
I know that SQL supports spaces utilizing [] brackets e.g. [Field Name With Spaces]. So how come RS doesn't?

I am trying to move distinct data from one table to another based on two columns regardless of special characters such as : ( ) ; ' " / - _ = >< etc. The two columns that are the defining factors that I need to match as duplicates are Col1 & Col3, the rest I want to get the maximum data from each column for that row (I hope this made sense).
Here is what I have tried, but it does not seem to work:

If row 3, 4,5, & 6 are all considered duplicate and Row3/Col2 has info in it that row 4 & 5/Col2 does not, I want to combine it with the single row I export to the new table retaining as much information from the rows of the duplicates as possible.
Can anyone help and let me know why my script is not wanting to play nice?

In our schools we have a number of East-European, Turkish, Scandinavian, ... students. Their names contain "special" characters, like Ö, Ü, Ø, ... Our users want to be able to search for student names without having to enter those special characters. Most often they don't know the exact spelling of the names and they get "no match found" messages as a result.
They want to have persons with the name Ösgür, Osgueld, ... in the result set after entering "osgu" in the search field.
What is the best way to do this? I was thinking about using another collation near the LIKE, but I don't know if that would work and how it should be done. The Database collation is Latin1_General_CI_AS.

I'm trying to figure out how to insert a special character that will make the values in the column BOLD when I use that table as reference in my Word Mailmerge. For starters, I was able to insert char(10) as carriage return, so when I use the values from that table in my mailmerge, the char(10) is effective, meaning, the carriage returrn is working, but how about making the font bold? Please help.
Example is:
insert into table(customer_address)
values ("123 hayworth drive" + char(10) + "new land grove" + char(10) + "chicago" + char(10))
This value when used in a Word Mailmerge, will be displayed as:
123 hayworth drive
new land grove
chicago
Now, how do I insert a special character for bold font?

I have a web form that needs to be bilingual. It contains several dropdown lists. The "text" and "value" for each item in the dropdown list is retrieved from a database. The logic reads the database and then populates the various dropdowns with logic such as:
dim newItem as new ListItem(textString, valueString)
theDropDown.items.add(newItem)
The problem that I am having occurs when the textString needs to contains special characters such as accented vowels or an "n" with a tilde. I have tried populating the database with HTML-formatted strings such as "Avión", hoping that this would display "Avion" with an accute accent over the "o". Unfortunately it displays "Avión".
How do I get dynamically-created dropdowns to display special characters? If the answer is to simply store the special characters directly in the database, then the question becomes how do I get the special characters into the database? I tried to figure out how to write a T-SQL command such as
update tablex set SpanishName = 'Avion' where id=999
but I can't figure out the syntax to insert an accented 'o' into the string.
