How Do Your Keep Text Formatting When You Insert It Into Database
Jul 23, 2005
Hi All,
This may seem like a stupid question but is there a way to keep text
formatting when you add it to a database? Such as Paragraphs and line
breaks?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I am saving a couple of paragraphs of text into a varchar(max) field in a SQL database table. But when I try to use display the information again, then all the linefeed and return characters seem to be removed. How do I keep this text formating in the database field?
I am sure that I am missing something simple here, but I can not figure out what. Can someone please help with some advise?
Thanks

I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind. I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while. Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.

I am trying to output data from SQL Server to an email body message with a little formatting (just to make it legible)
Using this SQL statement:
select top 1 'Name', app_first_name+' '+app_last_name [name] ,'Submission Date', submission_date ,'Address', app_address+', '+app_city+', '+app_state+' '+app_zip from vw_bpa_export where app_email = dave@email.com order by submission_date desc
the resulting output displays this in the email body
"Name","Brian Vogler","Submission Date","2008-01-30 07:45:00","Address","6285 Harrow Trace, Norcross, GA 30092 "
but what I want is the text to look more like this:
Name Brian VoglerSubmission Date 2008-01-30 07:45:00Address 6285 Harrow Trace, Norcross, GA 30092
Is there a way to do this in the SQL statement (without HTML tags)?

Does anyone know if there is a way SQLMail can always send a message using a fixed font like Courrier? I use SQLMail to send out an invoice and even though I format the spacing, the email looks unformatted on some systems.
I am using Exchange 5.5, SQL server 6.5 sp4 and the recipients of the emails could have any email client.
thanks,

Hello everyone!I'm having a problem with inserting the content of a text file into a Sql Server 2005 database.I'm reading the text file into a dataset, and works fine. What I can't do is what I suspect is the simple part: Insert all the data into a table that has exactly the same configuration that the file. I've never worked with dataset's before, and I can't seem to find the answer to this! This is what I have done so far: Dim i2 As Integer Dim j As Integer Dim File As String = Server.MapPath("..DocsFactsFORM_MAN_V3_1.txt") Dim TableName As String = "Facts"
Dim delimiter As String = "9"
Dim result As DataSet = New DataSet() Dim s As StreamReader = New StreamReader(File) Dim columns As String() = s.ReadLine().Split(Chr(9)) result.Tables.Add(TableName) Dim strs1 As String() = columns For i2 = 0 To CInt(strs1.Length) - 1 Dim col As String = strs1(i2) Dim added As Boolean = False Dim [next] As String = ""
Dim i As Integer = 0 While Not added Dim columnname As String = String.Concat(col, [next]) columnname = columnname.Replace(Chr(9), "") If Not result.Tables(TableName).Columns.Contains(columnname) Then
result.Tables(TableName).Columns.Add(columnname)
added = True Else
i += 1
[next] = String.Concat("_", i.ToString()) End If End While Next i2 Dim strs2 As String() = s.ReadToEnd().Split(Chr(13) & Chr(10).ToString()) For j = 0 To CInt(strs2.Length) - 1 Dim items As String() = strs2(j).Split(Chr(9)) result.Tables(TableName).Rows.Add(items) Next j So now I have my dataset populated with all the information, but how can I insert it into the database? If anyone can help I would appreciate very, very much!Thank you Paula

Is it possible to retain text or paragraph formatting in a SqlServer 2005 Express edition table? If so, how?
I am particularly interested in keeping a linebreak between paragraphs and the only way I can think to do that is to put each paragraph in its own row. But I want some input before I undertake that substantial task.

What is wrong? Why it doesn’ t accept the number typed in my text box?

I created the following, which emails out a query from a SQL 2005 database.
It works fine, but is there anyway to change the formatting to look more like a table?
Such as:
ESSSEQUENCE: 2000
MaterialType: 900
ESSPrefix: 01
PartDesc: Test
Project: 2833
PM: Jeff House
Here's the following code I'm using that sends the data as text and you can't tell what column heading goes with the data because it's kind of all over the place.
Any help would be appreciated..
declare @q as varchar(255)
select @q = 'select ESSSequence, MaterialType, ESSPrefix, PartDesc, Project, PM
from ESSPartNumLog
where ESSSequence = (SELECT MAX(esssequence) FROM esspartnumlog) '
exec msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail
@recipients = 'tengel@pivotint.com',
@Profile_name = 'DatabaseEmail2',
@subject = 'New record added in ESSPartNumLog',
@query = @q,

I am working with extracting data from a SAP database, and I would like to perform some 'visual formatting' on the returned data. Because the SQL code that I am writing will be used in a custom Report it is not possible for me to use '3rd Party' formatting tools. Furthermore because the database is hosted on an MS SQL 2008 R2 RDBMS it is not possible to use the IIF() function.
Here is a sample of the data that I am getting back at the moment. URL...Here is how I would like the data to be returned (with the exception that the blue lines will ideally be blank cells). URL...
I have come to believe that I should be using the ROW_NUMBER() function, along with the OVER() function and possibly the 'partition by' keywords. Here is my original code -
Code:
select
td.ItemCode as 'Item Code'
, td.Dscription as 'Item Description', td.Quantity as 'Order Qty'
, titm.OnOrder as 'PO Qty'
, th.CardCode as 'BP Code', th.CardName as 'BP Name'
, th.DocNum as 'Sales Order Number'
, tsp.SlpName as 'Sales Person'
, twhs.WhsCode as 'Whs Code'
, isnull(tbloc.BINLABEL, '') as 'BIN Label', isnull(cast(tbloc.QUANTITY as nvarchar(20)), '') as 'BIN Qty'
code]...
Notice above that I only see the 'Seq' and no other data. How can I go about modifying this code so that I see all of the data columns I desire? If I further 'refine' the above, by adding case statements and the individual columns that I want to see (as opposed to using the * wildcard) I get a long list of error messages.

I have a SQL Server database. The data from a table is populated in the table and can do a regular display query on a record without issue.
Problem is when I pull the data into a form the data doesn't show up in some form fields for editing.
I am building a backend for the manager to make updates and changes and this is vital. Does anyone know if it has something to do with a database setting or has had a similar issue in the past?
The reason I think its a database setting is becuase the same table converted into MS Access has no problem populating the text boxs and text areas.
Your help is much needed and appreciated.
Thanks.

We replicate a SQL2000 database (DataBaseA) to a SQL2000 database (DataBaseB) by using the Restore function and hasn't change its logical name but only the physical data path and file name. It is running fine for a year. We use the same way to migrate the DataBaseB to a new SQL2005 server with the Restore function and the daily operation is running perfect. However, when we do the Backup of DatabaseB in the SQL2005, it just prompt the error message
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of full-text catalog 'DataBaseA' is not permitted because it is not online. Check errorlog file for the reason that full-text catalog became offline and bring it online. Or BACKUP can be performed by using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses to restrict the selection to include only online data. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Please note we left the DataBaseA in the old SQL2000 server.
Please help on how we can delete the Full-text catalog from DatabaseB so we can do a backup
Many Thanks

I am trying to SELECT various fields from a table in SQL Server to INSERT INTO a Text file defined using a Schema.ini. I know that this can be done using BCP (not sure if I could specify which fields as not all are required), DTS (which I have done) and with a Linked Server (where I keep getting a bookmark error). The process used in Access is [Sample#csv] IN 'C:' 'TEXT;' but I can't seem to find the format to use in SQL using either a MSDASQL or ODBC connection string. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

How do you insert more than 255 characters into a text field? or am I using READTEXT and DATALENGTH incorrectly?
I am trying to concatenate two 255 varchar strings. Both do have 255 characters of data.
I want to insert the concatenated strings into a field define as a text data type.
if I try to ' insert into tempTbl(textFieldDataType) values (@text1+@text2) it appears only the @text1 is inserted.
I have been told the data is really there, but I can only read the 256 position + with READTEXT.
DECLARE @textptr varbinary(16)
select @textptr = (select TEXTPTR(textFieldDataType) from tempTbl where pktempTbl = 33)
READTEXT tempTbl.textFieldDataType @textPtr 255 10
This should have read 10 text positions after the 255th position. However, I get msg
Msg 7124, Level 16, State 1
The offset and length specified in the READTEXT command is greater than the actual data length of 255.
If I use the datalength function, it appears to confirm that @text2 was never inserted
declare @length int
select @length = (select datalength(textFieldDataTypet) from tempTbl where pktempTbl = 33)
select @length
@length is returned as 255

Hi there,
I have an access 2000 db and in one of my tables I need to store some text that sometimes contains an apostrophe.
My problem is, everytime my program tries to insert text containing an apostrophe, the program crashes...
The insert statments I am using look like this:
CurrentDb.Execute "INSERT INTO myTable (Text) VALUES ('" & stringContainingApostrophe & "')"
I've tried checking the text for apostrophes and replacing them with an ecape character + apostrophe ("'") but that doesn't work either...
It seems like I should be able to store text that contains an apostrophe... Am i missing something here?
Does anyone have any ideas?? (Thanks in advance)
