How Manipulate A DataSet That SqlDataSource Return
Apr 21, 2008
hi,
I have a page Price List with GridView to display only two columns of a table (Product name & price). Page size=20. I use SqlDataSource for it.
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" DataSourceMode="DataSet"
In my case the SqlDataSource control return data as a DataSet object. So the DataSet object contains all the data in server memory.
I need to create Print Preview page with other columns (Product name & price & Vendor and Date Issue) without paging.
I'm going to save dataSet in Session and in Print Preview page use it as datasource (
without having to run another query).
But I have no idea how to save this DataSet in Session. I don't know the DataSet Name. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Dear sir or madamI have a problem related to using sqldatasource and dataset.I heard that using dataset is faster than using sqldatasource,but I think that in sqldatasource have a DataSourceMode property allowing user to choose to use with dataset or datareader.Now,I still wonder why they said that dataset is faster than sqldatasource. I look forward to hearing from you.Thank you in advance.Best wishes,

I can find lots of examples of how to extract a DataSet from a SqlDataSource, but not the opposite.
I have a DataSet that has been populated with 3 DataTables, and I want to create a SqlDataSource, and populate it with the first DataTable in the DataSet.
Is this possible?

Hi
At the moment I gave a function (GetProfile) which returns a dataset (dSet) something like this
Dim dataAdapter As System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter(sqlCommand)Dim dSet As System.Data.DataSet = New System.Data.DataSetdataAdapter.Fill(dSet)
return dSet
I am using the .Tables property of the dataset to loop round the values. like this (below), I can't use the SQLDataSource control to bind to a form or controls due to the functionality of what I'm doing.
Dim dataSet As System.Data.DataSet = GetProfile(UserID) With dataSet If .Tables(0).Rows.Count = 1 Then With .Tables(0).Rows(0)
(some code like)
lblName.Text = .Item("Name").ToString Page.Title = "Member profile::" & lblName.Text
etc...
End With
End If
End With
So my question: is there a way of using an SQLDataSource control to populate a dataset rather than using my function?

Hi all...I've set the DataSourceMode = SqlDataSourceMode.DataSet, and did a .Type return and found that it is actually returning a DataView. A component I am trying to avoid rewriting....requires a dataset that loops through the table, does some cool formatting to a datagrid and then rebinds.Here's the code that I'm trying to send the dataset to....maybe there's just a couple of changes that could make it work with a DataView? int i = 0; string prevsub = ""; while (i <= ds.Tables[0].Rows.Count - 1) { DataRow dr = ds.Tables[0].Rows[i]; string sub = dr["SubHeading"].ToString(); if (sub != prevsub) { prevsub = sub; DataRow newrow = ds.Tables[0].NewRow(); newrow["Title"] = "SubHeading"; newrow[columnName] = dr[columnName]; ds.Tables[0].Rows.InsertAt(newrow, i); i++; } i++; }

How does one programmatically retrieve the results from a sqldatasource that has had a filterexpression applied to it?
Let me elaborate, here is my code:
SqlDataSource1.FilterExpression = "MenuType = 'myfilteredvalue'"
Dim _dv As DataView = CType(SqlDataSource1.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty), System.Data.DataView)
_dv.Table.TableName = "Menu" Dim ds As New DataSet("Menus") ds.Tables.Add(_dv.Table.Copy()) 'Add relation: ParentID under MenuID
Dim relation As New DataRelation("ParentChild", ds.Tables!Menu.Columns!MenuID, ds.Tables!Menu.Columns!ParentID, True) relation.Nested = True
ds.Relations.Add(relation)
What I'm doing is, I have a sqlDataSource that pulls all the data from my DB. With this data in the sqlDataSourceSource, I want to then populate an XMLDatasource (via a dataset) with only the records I need, i.e. the filter. However, after I apply my filter above, the sqlDataSoruce still contains all the records. I thought maybe if I did a sqlDataSource.Bind() after my SqlDataSource.FilterExpression, but that didn't do anything either.In laymans terms:I want to say something like: dataset = sqldatasource.filter(my filter expression).

I am trying to write a function for some source to make a call out to and fill a RadioButtonList. I am running into a few problems though that I need assistance on. (I am new to DataSets)
Here is the function to fill the RBL:
1 Private Function GetDataSet(ByVal QuestionID As Integer, ByVal QuestionType As Integer, ByVal LocaleID As Integer, ByVal GroupingNum As Integer) As DataSet
2 Dim cnn As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("ConnectionString").ConnectionString)
3 Dim cmd As New SqlCommand
4 cmd.CommandText = "usp_responses_sel"
5 cmd.CommandType = Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure
6
7 ' Fill usp_ with Parameters
8 cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("QuestionID", QuestionID)
9 cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("LocaleID", LocaleID)
10 cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("GroupingNum", GroupingNum)
11
12 Dim da As New SqlDataAdapter
13 da.SelectCommand = cmd
14 Dim ds As New DataSet
15 da.Fill(ds, "response")
16 Return ds
17 End Function
So my issue is with line 15 [da.Fill(ds, "response")]. I pulled this function from somewhere else and am trying to tailor it to my needs. However, I do not understand what I need to do with this line and it keeps bombing out. I thought this references the DB Table but in my case, the SP has several tables joined together. Is this how I reference it from the calling source code? Please assist.
Also, I am having problems understanding the binding process from the calling source. Here is my code that calls the function:1 Dim ds As DataSet = GetDataSet(CType(e.Item.DataItem("question_id").ToString, Integer), QuestionTypeID.Value, intLocale, 2)
2 rblResponses2.DataSource = ds
3 rblResponses2.DataBind()
What do I need to do with it from here and how can I work with it after it's bound?
Thanks

Hi thereI have the following two tablesmainprofile (profile varchar(20), description)accprofile (profile varchar(20), acct_type int)Sample data could bemainprofile----------------prof1 | profile oneprof2 | profile twoprof3 | profile threeaccprofile--------------prof1 | 0prof1 | 1prof1 | 2prof2 | 0Now doing a join between these two tables would return multiple rows,but I would like to know whether it would be possible to returnacct_type horizontally in a column of the result set, e.g.prof1 | profile one | [0,1,2]prof2 | profile two | [0]I could probably manage this with cursors, but it would be veryresource intensive. Is there a better way?Regards,Louis

I'm not sure if anybody else is having a problem with the Return Value of Stored Procedures where you get the "Specified cast not valid" error, but I think I found a "bug" in VS2005 that prevents you from having a return value other than Int64 datatype. I tried to look for the solution for myself on the forums but unfortunately I just couldn't find it. Hopefully, this will help out anyone who had come across the same problem.
Basically, I have a stored procedure that I wanted to call as an Update for my ObjectDataSource that returns a Money value. Everytime I do this, I keep getting that error saying "Specified cast not valid" even when I try to change the @RETURN_VALUE data type to Currency or Money. After a long session of eye gouging moments, I decided to look at the code for my dataset. There, I noticed that the ScalarCallRetval for my StoredProcedure query was still set to System.Int64. I changed it to System.Object and, like a miracle, everything works like its suppose to.
Ex. protected void SomeObjectDataSource_Updated(object sender, ObjectDataSourceStatusEventArgs e)
{GrandTotalLabel.Text = ((decimal)e.ReturnValue).ToString("C");
}

Hello everyone,
I have a great deal of experience in Intrebase Stored Procedures, and there I had the FOR SELECT statement to loop through a recordset, and return the records I wish (or to make any other calculations in the loop).
I'm new in MS SQL Stored Procedures, and I try to achieve the same if possible. Below is a Stored Procedure written for MS SQL, which returns me a calculated field for every record from a table, but it places different values in the calculated field. Everything is working fine, except that I receive back as many datasets as many records I have in the Guests table. I would like to get back the same info, but in one dataset:
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetVal AS
Declare @fname varchar(50)
Declare @lname varchar(50)
Declare @grname varchar(100)
Declare @isgroup int
Declare @id int
Declare @ListName varchar(200)
DECLARE guests_cursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT id, fname, lname, grname, b_isgroup FROM guests
OPEN guests_cursor
-- Perform the first fetch.
FETCH NEXT FROM guests_cursor into @id, @fname, @lname, @grname, @isgroup
-- Check @@FETCH_STATUS to see if there are any more rows to fetch.
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS =0
BEGIN
if (@isgroup=1)
Select @grname+'('+@lname+', '+@fname+')' as ListName
else
Select @lname+', '+@fname as ListName
-- This is executed as long as the previous fetch succeeds.
FETCH NEXT FROM guests_cursor into @id, @fname, @lname, @grname, @isgroup
END
CLOSE guests_cursor
DEALLOCATE guests_cursor
GO
can somebody help me please. Thanks in advance

Ive run into a situation where some code im using will not function the same when between these two cases. So, this has me wondering what is going on behind the scenes. What is the sequence of events that are occurring that would possibly be messing things up.Here is the sample codeIts a gridview that is using a sqldatasource control. The code works fine, but if you want to bind the grid to a dataset and call databind yourself, things dont work as expected and the other features that the code performs just isnt happening, at least not for me.

<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="WeekEndingDatePicker" Name="EndDate" PropertyName="SelectedDate" />

Everything I've been able to find works if I'm defining my own command object and writing this thing from scratch. What I - and you - have to work with is what's above.

I thought I would impliment a new feature of my web page using stored procedures and the SqlDataSource object, for practice or whatever, since I don't normally use that stuff.
This is the stored procedure:set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go
-- =============================================
-- Author:Lance Colton
-- Create date: 7/31/06
-- Description:Find the contest winner
-- =============================================
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[AppcheckContest]
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@BeginDate datetime = '1/1/2006',
@EndDate datetime = '12/31/2006',
@SectionID int = 10,
@WinnerID int = 0 OUTPUT
AS
BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON;
-- Insert statements for procedure here
SELECT top 1 @WinnerID = P.UserID
FROM cs_Posts P
WHERE P.PostDate BETWEEN @BeginDate AND @EndDate
AND P.SectionID = @SectionID
AND P.UserID <> 2100 -- I don't want to win my own contest...
AND SettingsID = 1000 -- This number could be different if i had more than one CS installed?
AND IsApproved = 1
ORDER BY NEWID() -- yes this is slow, but it works...
RETURN @WinnerID
END
It's really simple - just needs to return the one randomly chosen integer userID. I've tested it in query designer or whatever it's called in Management Studio and it works fine there at least.
Thinking I was done the hard part, I created a new web form in visual studio, dropped a SqlDataSource on it, and used the 'configure data source' wizard from the smart tag to do all the work for me. I didn't have any trouble using the wizard to select my stored procedure, and i'm using the sa connection string to simplify my debugging. I tried using the FormParameter / FormField way of getting the output and setting the input parameters. I can't seem to get it working though. There's no errors or anything, just the output isn't coming through.
Here's the code from the aspx codebehind file:Partial Class Contest
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
Protected Sub btnSelectWinner_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSelectWinner.Click
Dim stuff As New System.Web.UI.DataSourceSelectArguments
SqlDataSource1.Select(stuff)
SqlDataSource1.DataBind()
lblWinnerID.Text = SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters("WinnerID").ToString
End Sub
End Class
As you can see, I wasn't sure if you're supposed to call databind() or select() to actually get the stored procedure to execute, so I tried both. I was hoping the last line of code there would set the label to the value contained in the @WinnerID parameter, but instead it sets it to "WinnerID".
Here's the code from the .aspx file. Most of this was generated by the Wizard, but I messed around with it a bit. <%@ Page Language="VB" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Contest.aspx.vb" Inherits="Contest" title="Untitled Page" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="CPHMain" Runat="Server">
<asp:Button ID="btnSelectWinner" runat="server" Text="Find Winner" />
<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar_From" runat="server"></asp:Calendar>
<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar_To" runat="server"></asp:Calendar>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:appcheck-csConnectionString-sa %>"
SelectCommand="AppcheckContest" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure" CancelSelectOnNullParameter="False">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:FormParameter FormField="Calendar_From" Name="BeginDate" Type="DateTime" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="Calendar_To" Name="EndDate" Type="DateTime" />
<asp:Parameter DefaultValue="10" Name="SectionID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:formParameter FormField="lblWinnerID" defaultvalue="666" Direction="InputOutput" Name="WinnerID" Type="Int32" />
</SelectParameters>

With a Gridview Control, I set the SqlDataSource to be a stored procedure in a Sql Sever database.
Using the wizzard to configure the datasource, the test returns lots of rows. After completing the wizzard, the gridview control does not show the column names in the VS2005 designer. For the gridview column headers the values are Databound Col0, Databound Col1, Databound Col2, ....) This tells me I have a problem.
I tried the same thing with a simpler stored procedure. This test stored procedure does not call anything else, takes several input parameters, returns rows. The column names show in the gridview control as expected.
So I am trying to figure out why the first case of gridview with sqldatasource is not working and the second case works . The stored procedure that is not working with my gridview calls multiple inner stored procedures and has #TEMP tables. My complex stored procedure ends with Select * from #Temp.
Could the calling of other inner stored procedures and use of #temp tables contribute to the problem? If yes then what is the strategy for using a gridview and loading it with the data that the complex stored procedure returns?

Is there a way to manipulate a date variable into a specific month and day?? For example, I want whatever date the user will enter to be
changed to June 30 of the following year. So, if the variable @date is 12/12/1999, I want to change it to 6/30/2000. If the date
is 2/1/2001, I want to make it 6/30/2002
I can't use DateAdd because you need to know how many months to add or days to add. Basically, how do I retain the month and day while changing the year
the year based on a dynamic field. What I need is a DateChange function that is DateChange(mm, @month, @date) ? Is there
something like that?
Thanks,
Joyce
