Oct 5, 2000How many processors can SQL server 7.0 support? If the sql server box has 2 CPUs, will sql server 7.0 utilize both ? or sql server use one and NT use the other?

Upgrading Server CPUs
Mar 7, 2007I'm upgrading a pair of active/passive cluster nodes running Windows 2003 Enterprise and SQL 2000. I'm going from 4 CPUs to 8 CPUs per server. What, if anything should I expect from SQL as far as licensing issues when performing this upgrade? We are using the per CPU license method and have the addtional licenses.

Mar 15, 2007I have been unsuccessful locating information about the maximum numberof CPU's SQL Server 2005 Enterprise supports.However I did find info in a document about configuring a fail overcluster solution. It said 4 CPUs, but it is unclear how that works outwith multi core processors.Is it 4 sockets? So with a quad core quad socket we could go have a 16core system?BTW the chart shows the CPU count jumping to 64 CPU's under Server2003 Datacenter.TIA

Mar 7, 2007Hi Settled into the new giggero now. Since I have moved here we have upgraded our 4 SQL Servers to 2005 64 bit. All 2 proc dual core hyper threaded with 4GB RAM. Windows 2003. SQL Server compatibility level is 90. SP 1 and the CTP for SP2 are installed. We are hanging on with sp2. Maxdop is 0 (but has been tried on 2). Up to a score or so databases per machine, between 8 and 300 GB in size. Offline, reasonably heavy duty ETL batch processing. Since upgrading we have had trouble with the CPUs intermittently maxing out at 100% usage. This is when intensive routines are run. We know that many of these routines are crappy (SELECT... INTO creating tables with 10s or 100s of millions of rows, cursors etc.) and we are rewriting the code. Estimated time of completion of code review and rewrite is end of next year so we can't wait that long. The same poor code ran (albeit slowly) in SS2k but is causing the server to lock up now it is being run on SS2k5. Symptoms include connection attempts timing out, routines running very slowly. Existing connections can continue to make requests but these are very slow. If we get on the box the CPUs are at a never wavering 100% utilisation. This continues until intervention is taken, often restarting the service. We have left a maxed out box alone over a weekend and it was still in the same state when we came in on Monday. Nothing to glean from the error logs (AFAIK). Obviously the long term fix is to get the code sorted but this is an ongoing process (in fact it is one of the reasons I was hired). Our immediate concern is to get the servers back up to the sort of performance we were realising before we upgraded. Does anyone have any ideas?As ever eternal gratitude and a crate of virtual beer for any help :D

Nov 10, 2015Having a SQL Server 2012 Enterprise (x64) on a Windows 2012 R2. We need to know, a reliable way, the number of processor sql server is using at a give time. We already know how many total processor are available to sql by getting info from sys.dm_os_sys_info.
For instance, a server has 40 processors, we want to know how many of those are being used at a given time. Since the load on the server may not be that high, we would like to know how many processors we can eliminate and the load will still be unaffected.
After watching the server performance for a while, we are predicting we may only need 16. But we would like to get some statistics before we reduce it to this number.

SQL Express 2005 with one instance on a networked dedicated stand-alone window XP€¦
We use this for custom software written in VB.net. We are not SQL experts€¦
Question 1) I am getting a event viewer warning that says
The time stamp counter of CPU on scheduler id 1 is not synchronized with other CPUs.
This seems strange, since there is only one CPU on this machine. Any ideas?
Question 2) In SQL Server Management Studio Express, we do not have the actual data files attached to the instance, but the custom program does use the actual data files just fine, defined by the connection string. Is there any pro/con to having them attached in SQL Server Management Studio Express?

I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site. Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly. Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005. The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?

I have a database backup (.bak) that was taken from UAT environment that has CDC enabled on some tables. I want to restore that database into my SANDBOX environment which does not support CDC (because of standard edition). The restore process fails due to this incompatibility. Is there any way to restore without CDC (I dont CDC enabled on my SANDBOX; just my data from the backup) ?

Feb 20, 2007Hi, I'm trying to convert our application and support additional east asian languages such as chinese simplified, japanese and korean. I know how to make the asp.net side work by support UTF-8 / global resource files / UICulture and whatever. But what do I have to do on the Sql Server side? I tested a few samples and i'm getting garbage characters after entring some chinese/japanese characters. Another unrelated question, I wrote some custom store procedures (dyanmically concatnated strings), I dont' have sql server 2005, so I'm wondering if I deploy it to sql server 2005, will 2005 be backward compatiable with 2000? I don't have any triggers and stuff, so I'm just wondering if you know anything about it. Thanks.

Oct 18, 2005I am using MS SQL Server 2005 n Visual Studio dot net 2005, When starting the managment studio i connect using windows authentication but the problem arises when i need to open an oledbconnection via ado.net with the syntax:
oconn=new oledbconnection(provider=;data source=,user id=,password equal) since windows doesnt include any password i cant use the user id and password fields which causes errors althugh i created a password for my windows account the same stuff again
is there any problem to change the connection method from windows authentication to sql server authentication and how can i create a login id and password.

Sql Server 2005 Diagram Support
Mar 30, 2006For some reason, when I try to access a database diagram on our new 2005 SQL Server, I get the following error msg:
"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner"
It then goes on to instruct me to either use Properties > Files or ALTER AUTHORIZATION to change the database owner.
Well, I've done that - and it clearly shows that there is an owner of the database, but even if I log in as that owner, the error msg continues to come up everytime I try to access Diagrams.
I found a post to run the following stored procedure which will set the sql server compatability level:
EXEC sp_dbcmptlevel database_name, 90
After running that in the query window of Management Stduio, I get the following msg below on the Messages tab:
"DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator."
I then try to create a new diagram again, and I get the same initial error (at the top of this post).

I want to manage my servers from a central location and have the ability to manage my packges too. Unfortunatley my servers are across domains which means I have to use SQL Server Login, which isn't a bad thing. However for some bizzare reason I can't connect to Integration Services using this method, only windows authentication which is a complete pain in the butt from a management stand point as I have to copy packages to various servers rather than add them from a central point.
Does anyone know if this bug/feature or what ever Microsoft is calling it will be fixed or know of any workarounds.

I am currently using SQL Server 2000 server. I have run some BCP command to import data to SQL from CSV and Text files with the help of FORMAT files through Windows Scheduler.
My doubt is, if I swich to SQL Server 2005, whether the same BCP commands will supported? If no, What are the things I need to do to run the BCP commands in 2005 as in 2000?
I heard that the BCP utility is no longer support in 2005 and this can be done thru SSIS utility. Is it right...?
Is SQL Server 2005 support to use the BCP commands without going to SSIS utility?
