How To Assign Identity Key Values In Replication

Sep 28, 2006

This is a very basic question on replication.

I'm having a central Server with SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and Other sites with Sql Express Server 2005.

Other sites will also be adding New records and data will be replicated to Central server and from there it will be distributed to all sites.

Question is that if Other sites are also adding Records how i can assing Identity values in those databases. There are few restricitons on this :-

1. I don't want to use GUID.

2. Numbers should be sequential that is after 1000, 1001, 1002 etc. should come.

i thought of adding Negative Values in the primary key on other sites and then when data is replicated on central server then replace it with sequential key but i'm not clear on how to accomplish this.

any help will be highly appreciable.

Can I Set A Default Range For The Identity Values For Merge Replication?

May 8, 2006

Hello,

We have a couple of tables that can have quite a bit of data each day prior to replication. Can we increase the default values for a table for each subscription? For example we have a table called table1 and on the sqlexpress client they could enter in 10000 rows a day, on table2 it's just 100 rows a day. How can we increase the values to where we do not get the error for table1 stating that the insert failed because it conflicted with the identity range check constraint. Thanks in advance.

Using A Variable To Assign An IDENTITY SEED

Feb 16, 2004

I'm using a stored procedure to create a table in sql 2000. One of the columns is an identity column. I need to set the seed to a max(number) from a column in another table, this column is not an identity column and can't be changed into one. I've been trying to set the seed by passing a variable. I continue to get errors so either I've got the syntax wrong or it's not possible to set the seed via a variable. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Assign Next Available Column Values?

Sep 29, 2014

find below object and data:

create table #StuDetails(City varchar(25),StuStatus varchar(25), currentValue int,Week1 int,week2 int,week3 int,week4 int)
insert into #StuDetails values('A','new',13,10,0,0,12)
insert into #StuDetails values('B','Old',10,10,41,0,12)
insert into #StuDetails values('C','Fail',10,9,0,0,5)
select * from #StuDetails

Output of above is display as:

CityStuStatuscurrentValueWeek1week2week3week4
Anew 13 10 0 0 12
BOld 10 10 41 0 12
CFail 10 9 0 0 5

Now for columns Week1 to week3 if value is 0 then i want to display by searching next week value, if it is also 0 then go for next week and if value found there then display instead of zero. so my output would be as below instead of above.

CityStuStatuscurrentValueWeek1week2week3week4
Anew 13 10 12 12 12
BOld 10 10 41 12 12
CFail 10 9 5 5 5

Transact SQL :: Recursive Query To Assign Values

Jul 30, 2015

I'm trying to find it difficult to use recursice CTEs or better solution for a special request below. There are two tables 1) @sizes serves as a lookup or reference for right drive and 2) @test is sample data with different sizes. Assume that I want to evenly distribute the drive letters from table1 to table2 by checking the size available.

E.g.: for the first record in  @test; id = 1 where the size is 50 and it fits in Y: drive -- left over space in Y: = 50

id=2, size 2.5, space available from left over = 50 - 2.5 = 47.5 which again fits into Y:
id = 3, size 51, cannot in fit in Y: drive as there is enough space in Y: to allocate (51 > 47.5)

so pick the next drive check on availability again

DECLARE @sizes TABLE (id TINYINT, size DECIMAL(5,2), drive VARCHAR(3))
INSERT INTO @Sizes
SELECT 1,100.00,'Y:'
UNION ALL
SELECT 2,80.85,'Z:'

[Code] ....

-- My output should look like

col1  ,  val ,   path
A          50      Y:
B           2.5    Y:
C          51     Z:
D          2.6    Y:
E          52      Z:
F           2.7    Y:

How To Assign Dataset Values In Header In RDLC Report

Apr 25, 2008

I am using RDLC report with Microsoft visual studio 2005. In the first page of rdlc i have two text boxes and one table in body section. In the second and subsequent pages i want to repeat the data from textbox1 and textbox2 along with table data continuation of page1.

Currently the continuation of table data from page1 to page2 is working properly. But the textbox1 and textbox2 data also needs to be repeated in every pages.

I tried the following steps, but fails to work.

1. added two text boxes in header section and another two text boxes in Body section.

2. Assigns the dataset value to textboxes in body section.

(Ex: =first(Fields!Address.Value)

3. Assigns the textboxes value from Body section to the corresponding text boxes in header section.

(Ex : =first(ReportItems!textbox1.Value))

Result:

The header text box value displayed in the first page only and not repeated in the subsequent pages.

Expected:

Whatever assigned to the header section should be repeated in the subsequent pages. But only page number, date... is reflecting in other pages and not the text box values in header section.

Kindly give me the solution.

Thanks in advance.

Resetting Identity Values Of PKs

Sep 21, 2000

What is the easiest way in T-SQL to reset the identity values of
the PK columns in a DB. Here's the scenario.

I'm going to be backing up a HUGE DB and then restoring
it to a new server. Once there I will run an SP to remove all the existing
data. The tables are now row-free. However my customer doesn't like that
the first record they add gets PK value of 5,321, or whatever.

After I remove all the data how can I reset the ids?
It would be nice to add some code to my sp_cleardb
that would go back and reset the identity columns
FYI
All of my tables use auto-incrementing identity fields with a seed of 1

1) I know how to do it in enterprise manager, but I need it in scripting
since I'll have to do it on hundreds of tables
2) I tried using alter table to drop the PK constraint, but that requires
knowing the pk constraint name, which is SQL generated and I won't know.

I think I got very close, but the code was just getting too big. I thought,
there must be an easier function to use, or a built in SP, or something?

Anyone know how to script this?
THanks in advance.

Getting Duplicate Identity Values In SQL 6.5

Aug 26, 1998

We are experiencing a problem at more than one site - it has only
just started happening.

We are actually getting duplicate Identity column values in various
tables and the values seem random - its not like the counter just gets
wound back.

We have used dbcc checkident and also bcp out and in the data, which
of course corrected the tables but only temporarily. Our application
is not doing any select into`s - just plain old inserts which for some
reason are allowing dups to be inserted into the tables.

problem sites are either sp3 or sp4.

There are thousands of sites (including most of ours) where there are
no problems like this with this particular app.

Any help from anyone would be most appreciated.

IDENTITY Creation Using Two Values

Mar 28, 2008

Going from Oracle to SQL 2000 and want to repeat Oracle process whereby the job_id field is generated using a trigger and a sequence one-up generator. These two values are then combined to create the job_id number. The sequence is simple: a minvalue, maxvalue and increment 1. The trigger is generating the first five characters from yyddd and appending the next sequence value to it.
Example:
JOB_ID: 08088155
YY: (Year = 08)
DDD: (88th day of year)
Next sequence number: (155)

When I create the table in SQL 2000 I will identify the JOB_ID column as an IDENTITY type data field, but is there any way to duplicate this Oracle sequence in SQL?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Replication With IDENTITY Columns

Jan 16, 2001

(Long post)

I have a production database with about half the tables using
IDENTITY columns for PRIMARY KEYS. This system is configured as both
a Publisher and a Distributor. We are using Transactional Replication
without updates. The SQL Server Agent runs every hour to pick up any
changes and replicate them to the Subscriber (another SQL Server
machine configured as our failover server).

Both servers are running SQL Server 7.0 (original, no service packs)
under Windows NT 4.0 (SP4).

The failover server (the replication Subscriber) will only be used if
the primary server goes down. And hopefully, only for a short time
before the primary server comes back online. During the time that the
failover is actually being used, the application will not make any
changes to the database.

The IDENTITY values that are replicated need to stay with their
original values. The replication process CANNOT assign new values to
these columns when there are inserted into the database on the
Publisher (i.e. failover server)

My question is: According to the documention, I can add 'NOT FOR
REPLICATION' to the IDENTITY columns and the values will be
preserved. But a collegue of mine says that resets the IDENTITY
sequence on the subscriber and the 2nd time a row gets inserted on
the Publisher, the values get messed up. On his system, he calls a
stored procedure for the tables with IDENTITY columns, and in the
stored procedure, he executes a 'SET IDENTITY_INSERT OFF', then
INSERTS the row, then 'SET IDENTITY_INSERT ON'. He claims that this
approach solved his issues with IDENTITY columns.

Who is right? Do I have to create a stored procedure for replication
for every table with an IDENTITY column, or can I just add 'NOT FOR
REPLICATION' and SQL Server will handle the rest?

NOTE: Upgrading to SQL Server 2000 is NOT an option right now.
Although, if a Service Pack for 7 fixes this, that might be an option.

Thanks in advance for any help you can shed on this issue.

Dave

Replication Of Identity Columns

Sep 8, 1999

We are trying to run replication from one server to another. Most of the tables in the publishing database have identity columns set. At one point the subscribing database had a match of identity columns and primary keys matching the publishing database. Obviously with a primary key set on the subscriber there would be conflicts with duplicate key inserts. We disabled the identity columms and droped the indexes and the data was able to replicate over. However, we discovered that the identity columns, which are used to generate id's on many of our tables, were not replicating over to the subscriber. In fact a null value was being inserted into the subsriber database.

Anyone seen this before? What, if there is one, is the solution?

Thanks,

Brad

OLE DB Destination - Obtaining Identity Values

Apr 29, 2008

Is there any way to get the new identity values created after an OLE DB Destination has finished its inserts?

Basically my problem is this...

My source database has its primary and foreign key columns as a GUID datatype. In my conversion, my destination database will be using INT (identity) columns for primary/foreign keys. How do I propagate the foreign key relationships to the destination database in an SSIS package? So obviously I can use an OLE DB Destination to generate the data with identities for the parent table, but after that I am stuck in how to create the relationships for the child tables.

I know how to do this in TSQL fairly easily (cursor or temp tables), but it doesn't seem so simple in SSIS.

thanks in advance.

Identity Seed Gone Bad In Merge Replication

Aug 8, 2007

Sever: sql 2000
Replication: Merge

Issue:
I am having an issue with my audit table, This table is filled by Triggers on various tables through the database. All triggers are defied with "not for replication"

I have allocated 500k ranges, with 80% threshold to the publisher and subscriber databases for this table. The table only holds 225,000 records.

From time to time I get the following error "The identity range managed by replication is full and must be updated by a replication agent. The INSERT conflict occurred in database 'PublicationName', table 'AuditHistory', column 'AuditID'. Sp_adjustpublisheridentityrange can be called to get a new identity range."

When I looked into the issue yesterday I noticed that the identity range being used by replication was 334300001 -> 334799999, however the maximum value in the table was 334300096, meaning that only 95 records were inserted, which means it is no where near the 80% threshold.

Somehow the identity seed on the AuditHistory table had been changed to 334800104, which is outside the allowable range.

My question is what could cause the identity seed to get set to such a high number??

any thoughts would be great!

Merge Replication Identity Ranges

Apr 5, 2008

I have a database table with a simple identity column. As a starting point... when I run the following queries... this is what I get:

SELECT Max(AliasID) FROM Account_Managers
1300006

DBCC CHECKIDENT ('Account_Managers')
Checking identity information: current identity value '1300006', current column value '1300006'.

Now... I set up merge replication, with the plan of allowing SQL Server to manage my identity ranges for me. I set up my ranges to be 100000 on the publication, 100000 on the subscriber, with a threshold of 80.

I would EXPECT to see the constraint
([AliasID]>(1300006) AND [AliasID]<=(1400006)) on the publisher and
([AliasID]>(1400006) AND [AliasID]<=(1500006)) on the subscriber.

However... what I do get is:

([AliasID]>(1300006) AND [AliasID]<=(1400006) OR [AliasID]>(1400006) AND [AliasID]<=(1500006)) on the publisher and

([AliasID]>(1500006) AND [AliasID]<=(1600006) OR [AliasID]>(1600006) AND [AliasID]<=(1700006))

Can anyone tell me why I get the OR... which essentially makes my identity ranges twice as large as they should be?

Thanks in advance.
