I wanna use backup database task in SSIS to implement SQL statement
BACKUP LOG WITH truncate only.
But in this task, seems that you must at least to choose a location to store backup. No way to just truncate log in SSIS?
any help will be appreciated.
how do i modify this so that it will truncate the log before backup?

According to BOL<---BACKUP LOGSpecifies a backup of the transaction log only. The log is backed upfrom the last successfully executed LOG backup to the current end ofthe log. This is a silly question but I am not sure of the answer.
Each day I do a complete DB backup and houly I backup the Translog file with the append mode.

i am using flatfilesource for reading data . for example for a condition if empid='2' means i have to truncate the dataflow , it is possible or not ?

I tried using Delete From Table_name or Truncate table Table_NAME and I have used Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider. It does not seem to work. I read some post on forums. None of them seem to work while truncating or deleting records from one of the access database table.
Is there any easy way to truncate access database without using script component and VB scripts. I do not know how to Write VB scripts so trying to find alternatives.

With a database size of almost 2 GB, I run the 'truncate table eventlog command' which completes successfully, but the database size only decreases by about 10 MB so stays too large - indeed the number of rows in the eventlog table is minimal, but the otehr tables in this database don't show such an amount of tables large enough to cause the size issue either. What could be the reason and how can I reduce it (possibly truncating another table but then which one, how could I determine which is too large and needs truncating?).

Please forgive the elementary nature of my question, but could someone please explain the differences between these two database backup types:
1. Log backup
2. Log backup no truncate
From what I understand and have read, the "no truncate" backup method keeps the entire transaction log indefinitely. Using the truncation method, the transaction log is either 1) compressed or 2) cleaned up so that any completed transactions are removed from the log. Which one of these is true?
And, for the big question: is it better to run a backup of the transaction log with truncation or not? Our current backup scheme is similar to the following:
Full backup every 24 hours
transaction log backup every hour with no truncation
Should we insert a truncation backup somewhere in here? What is the danger of removing (or compressing) parts of the transaction log? Will this affect the restore process?

also, i would like to do a daily update of data from one table in a db to a table in another db with same schema; only the rows with latest edit time must exist, i have a column in both tables which records the last editing time of a row....

I have a requirement of migrating all databases from one server to another. I need to backup all SQL Server 2005 databases (both SQL and AS) with the exact replica copy. Also I need to migrate all the SSIS packages. Unfortunately I am not a Database/System Admin.
Is there any Script/Tool/Wizard Functionality that would help me doing this? I would be happy, even if you can help me reducing the parts of manual work in anyway you can think of, so please pour you thoughts in.

I was assigned a project to make a backup of data from 3 lists in a sharepoint with the objective of using that data to do reports on it using Report Builder.
I was abble to do the downloads using the add in to do downloads Sharepoint List Source and Destination "plug in" in SSIS, now the issue is how to update the backup table only with updated and new rows.

In my SSIS package, I have a backup database task. When I run the package with DestinationAutoFolderPath set to a folder ("Network Service" account has full permission on this folder) and DestinationCreationType set to Auto, the task works just fine creating a backup with its own name. (similar to database_date<count>).
But what I want is in my front-end I am allowing the user to specify the name of the backup file. So I want the task to create the backup file in the name I supply. I set the DestinationCreationType to manual and in the application code added the DestinationManualList with the path from the UI.
Now the pacakge runs fine but does not take any backup. There is no errors as well. If I set the FailPackageOnFailure and FailParentOnFailure to true, then I am getting the DTSExecResult.Failure but I am not getting the actual error from the backup database task.
Am I missing anything here?

I created a Backup plan using the SSMS Maintenance Wizard. It created an SSIS package for me but the package didn't delete files older than, say, 3 days. So I exported that package from MSDB, added a Script task to it (to do what I needed), and imported it back into MSDB. I can open the new package under SSMS and everything looked good ... until I double-clicked the Script task. That task is simply not supported under the SSMS Maintenance Wizard. Goin in and out of that task under SSMS gave me the following errors:
"Microsoft Visual Studio Macros: The operation could not be compelted. Call was rejected by callee.".
Or the ever popular "cannot show the editor for this task'.
I was asked to "Wait for Completion" or "Switch tasks or "Cancel".
It seems the only way to delete these files is to set up a seperate SSIS job that calls my Script task sometime after the nightly backup has completed. But now the completion of the Backup job and the file deletion processes are decoupled, which is not very good. Can you offer any ideas how to handle the gracefully? (The real problem is that the SSMS Maintenance wizard does not recognize the full set of SSIS tasks. It would be nice if double-clicking on the Maintenance plan pane opened up the SSIS editor but that's for a later day.)

I'm looking for a way to copy/migrate all of my SSIS packages from 1 SQL2005 server to another SQL2005 server. I see export/import options but they are for 2000 DTS packages. And it seems like I can only do this one package at a time, which is tedious. Anybody out there who's done all packages at once?

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.
The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).
Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

Hi there,
I have a simple stored procedure that will truncate the log file but I now need to make this dynamic so that this proc can be run with any DB name. I know you can look up the logical filename in sysfiles but I'm not too sure how to write this procedure so that it will simply truncate the log file of the currently selected DB.
This is what I have so far which as you can see is hardcoded:

I have a small doubt .
Truncate is not a logged operation.
In log shipping if we perform any truncate operation on the primary server will its get reflected on the secondary server.
I have 2 tables.
Table 1 and table 2.
Table 1 has a foreign key related to a particular column on table 2.
Suppose if i have applied a truncate command on table 2 .will it work or not.
We have to check for dependencies on the table before we should apply a truncate command.
Could any one tell me can we directly apply a truncate command on any object irrespective of the dependencies on that object.

I am doing some data extraction from a database table: custtable. The customers have zip codes of 9 digits however I just need the first five of them. I am not sure of the syntax. Can anyone suggest me on this one?
This is what my statement is
where ((len (ct.zipcode ) > 5 and ct.country = '001')or ct.country <> '001')
This one returns customers with zipcodes > 5 and I need to only truncate this, coz my database also contains cust with zip code of only 5 digits and I have extracted that data already. Now I need all the zipcodes that have a length of 9 to be truncted to 5.
An earliest possible response is highly appreciable.
