How To Cluster Windows And SQL Server Videos
Aug 28, 2006
I thought this might be useful for anyone who's looking at learning how to cluster. They're a series of mini-webcasts on how to create a SQL Server cluster from the ground-up (architecture, to windows, to SQL Server 2005).
Windows and SQL Server 2005 Clustering Architecture
Description: Before you start learning how to cluster, this video will show you the basics on how clustering in Windows 2003 and SQL Server 2005 works. Brian shows the basic architecture on clustering as well as the checklist that you would want to follow before starting to cluster.
Clustering Windows 2003 R2
Description: In this presentation, you'll learn step-by-step how to cluster Windows 2003 R2. Brian shows you how to configure and cluster a two node cluster, preparing it for any future services like SQL Server or Exchange.
Clustering SQL Server 2005
Description: With Windows 2003 now clustered, you're ready to begin to clustering SQL Server 2005. In this presentation, you'll see how to cluster SQL Server 2005 and some best practices in how to configure the SQL Server cluster after the fact.

I have a Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 edition cluster setup and functioning normally. Now, I am trying to get SQL Server 2000 installed as a failover cluster but am having some difficulty. When installing, I get the message '[sqsrvres] ODBC sqldriverconnect failed' in the event log. The message happens when the installer is trying to bring the SQL Server Service resource online.
I am able to ping the name of the instance successfully. I am able to manually start the 'MSSQL$InstanceName' service. I have turned off the firewall on both machines, but this did not help. I have the DTC Service setup as a resource in the same cluster group.
I also read http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815431 which seemed promising, but did not reolve the problem.
Any help would be much appreciated.

This is a fresh install of SQL Server 2005 (64bit) on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 64bit OS. The Cluster has been built and SQL 2005 has been installed (Database Engine(clustered), Analysis Server(clustered), Notification Server, Integration Server, Reporting Services). SQL 2005 SP2 has been installed.
Now, I want to install Notification Server, Integration Server and Reporting Services on the second node for high availability.
When I select 'Install New Components' from Add/Remove Programs, the System Configuation Checker tells me theres a version difference and to:
To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.
I'm using the same binaries as the original install. Could this be a result of installing SQL 2005 SP2?
Can someone help me out with this. I'd prefer using the setup interface instead of a command line script.

Hello
I've installed Windows 2003 SP2 in a stand-alone cluster (will be adding a second node later). I'm now installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition 64-bit extended and would like to have the "Create a SQL Server Failover Cluster" box to not be grayed out. Even when I check the "SQL Server Database Services" box, it still has the cluster box grayed out.
Any idea's?
TIA!

We have set up SQL server 2012 alwaysOn availability group on windows 2012. It runs and fails over successfully. Recently, a VMWare creates a snapshort of a primary and it breaks a cluster. We saw errors in a cluster log.
In VMware setting, The quiesce option is turned off for these VMs. Also, we configured cluster setting :Windowssystem32> (get-cluster).SamesubnetThreshold = 10 ( Relaxed )
Cluster node 'Test1' was removed from the active failover cluster membership. The Cluster service on this node may have stopped. This could also be due to the node having lost communication with other active nodes in the failover cluster. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapters on this node. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or

Hi all
I am busy looking at the WIndows 2003 Comptu Cluster setup (Well I am loading it)
And I am interested to know if any body has run SQL 2005 Enterprise on this platform before ?
I know that Windows Compute Cluster uses a JOB scheduler to run tasks and this can be customised for each task , to allow it to use more resourses or less .
I also know that SQL 2005 is much more capable of running cluster mode with database replication and log file shipping
I want to know is of I load SQL 2005 on a Clustered Compute setup will it handle the SQL jobs, database requests with out the scheduler.
The question might be a bit tricky but any help is appricated
Thanks

I am looking for some recommendations for memory sizing and options for a SQL 2000 Cluster. This is a two node cluster built on Windows 2003 ENT SP1 (x86). Both the nodes have the following hardware:
- 4 x Dual Core AMD Processors
- 16 GB Memory
- EMC Shared Disk
We are running six SQL 2000 instances and don't expect each of these instances to use more than 1.7 GB of memory. All these instances are going to support BizTalk 2004 Databases. I already have /PAE enabled on the nodes. I am looking for the following answers:
- Do I need to enable AWE on all the instances even if the instances ? Currently, we don't have that enabled and we have seen some issues regarding excessive paging even when there is physical memory available. The DBAs think that we don't need to enable AWE. I am bit confused on this one.
- We normally run 3 instances on each node and would like size the cluster in such a way that it can take six instances in case of a node failure
Any input will be highly appreciated.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Always on Cluster with 3 nodes (two in the primary site and one in the DR site).
Primary Site:
-Primary Site Server1
-Primary Site Server2
DR Site 1 (to be decommed):
-DR Site Server1
Our company is planning on decommissioning the DR site. But before we do this, we want to add a 4th site to the cluster. Migrate the data...and then decommission the original DR Site.
Is it possible to have this configuration:
Primary Site:
-Primary Site Server1
-Primary Site Server2
DR Site 1 (to be decommed):
-DR Site Server1
DR Site 2 (NEW DR Site):
-DR Site Server1
IF this is possible, do I simply add the new DR site to the existing cluster (same steps as adding the first DR node to the cluster when the cluster was originally configured? or are there special steps?

We are trying to setup a system to system failover cluster using twonodes (x346) which each have a single hba running to seperatecontrollers on the DS400.For full redundnancy, IBM recommends dual path from each node but wedont need that. The current setup has two completly seperate paths. hbaon node 1 to controller A on DS400 and hba on node 2 to controller B.If i take a controller offline, failover works fine to jumo to othercontroller and throw all resources to it's node but if i shutdown anode- the cluster loses all attached storage and DS400 is unaware toswitch ownership to other controller. Is there a way to us mscs without dual path from each node?anotherwords... if either node or controller fails on a single path, wewant the other path to become active.our main goal is to use sql server 2005 clustering on the cluster.everything checks out perfect if i only use one controller on the DS400for both nodes but this brings us back to another single point offailure.I saw that Qlogic has MPIO drivers on thir website for the DS400 but itseems as though they are for 32bit systems and the install errors outwith:C:Driversmpio1.0.8.4 (w32)>install.exe -iPre-Installing the Multi-Path Adapter Filter...SuccessInstalling the Multi-Path Bus Driver...Failure. Could you please suggest or direct me to any documentation for the best practices used to upgrade such an environment?

We're upgrading a SQL Server 2000 cluster (Active/Passive) running on Windows 2000 Server to a SQL Server 2005 Cluster running on Windows Server 2003. We can't purchase new hardware and we have no spare hardware. We also need to move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server at the same time. We want to keep downtime to a bare minimum.
What we were thinking was the following steps... Anyone try this?
1. Break the link between the servers.
2. Install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on one side along with SQL Server 2005. While this step is running, the active node would still be live on Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 serving our customers.
3. Restore a copy of a backup from the active production side to the node we're upgrading and at that point we would bring the active node down, switching the active node to be the newly upgraded server.
4. As a final step, the old active node would now have the link to it broken, we would install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on it and sql server 2005. At this point we would bring it back into the cluster and the cluster would be complete again.
Thoughts?

Hi,
I have setup a SQL 2000 cluster and the cluster works fine. I have given the SQl cluster a virtual IP address too.
I am unable to connect to the Cluster from a remote machine, using SQL Enterprise Manager or SQL Query Analyzer.
But I could connect to it from the machines involved in the CLuster.
Someone plese show some direction on this.
Thanks,

During the installation of Adding node to a SQL Server failover cluster(On passive node) getting error like.. The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. We run the below commands but didn’t get any resolution & got the same above error .
1st Method…
1. Open console command (Run->CMD with administrator privileges).
2. net stop winmgmt
3. Rename folder %windir%System32WbemRepository to other one, for backup purposes (for example _Repository).
4. net start winmgmt
2nd Method..
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
a) Command : - sc config winmgmt start= disabled
b. Command : - net stop winmgmt
2. Run the following commands.
a). Command: Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%System32wbem
b). Command: Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%System32wbem
3. Re-enable the WMI service
Command: sc config winmgmt start= auto
Last command to run after above steps
4. Command: mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server100Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"
File not found Error for above command.
