How To Comparing NText Fields...?

Apr 6, 2008

Hi all

I have a table with one nText Field , some times i need to realize whether two records have the same value in that nText Field or not , so how can i compare

these two records based on their ntext Fields.? in the other words i'm looking for some thing like the follows:

declare  @a nText
declare  @b nText

select @a=MynTextField from MyTable where PK=18
select @b=MynTextField from MyTable where PK=21

if @a=@b
 print 'Records Are the same'
else
print 'Record are not the same'

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Text And Ntext Fields

Jul 23, 2005

I've just gotten my data into SQL Server, and changed the connection stringon the program. There was a memo field (Access 2000) and we put that in a text field (with adefault length of 16?).Now, when displaying the data online (through asp pages), there are bigwhite-space gaps in the pages (that display the memo field data), imageshave a "double" url(http://www.mysite.com/thisfolder/ht...thelinksite.com)there are lots of place with " ".The field data has html tags in it, if that has anything to do with it.It seems like I've heard that there are issues with text fields. Is thiswhat they meant? Is there anything I can do?Thanks, JA

Ntext Fields In ReportServer Db

Apr 4, 2008

I haven't had to deal with ntext fields before, I'm finding that they are a ton of fun

Can someone tell me what the impact would be of changing all of the ntext column in ReportServer, ReportServerTempDB, and RSExecutionLogs to varchar(MAX)?

I can only guess that ntext was left in for backwards compatibility with sql2k?

Thanks for any thoughts, direction!

Comparing 2 Fields As A Measure?

Sep 1, 2000

I need to build a cube for membership over time. Active membership is the gap from the record's CreationDate to SuspendedDate, as compared to a reference date (today's active members have CreationDates before today, and SuspendedDates > today, or NULL).

Any idea how to build a cube so I can count membership over a Time dimension? The only approach I've been able to come up with is to create a table with a record for each active member on each date (brute force).

Comparing Fields In Tables

Aug 4, 2005

I am working with the article that MAK wrote on SecurityLogs http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3515886

I have completed this, but I have made some changes to the database (for normalization to 3NF purposes). I now have problems with a query.

I am trying to "Insert a new record in a table if it does not already exist in the table". To try to clarify I perform the following query:

INSERT INTO Tmp_Event
SELECT DISTINCT EventID, EventType, EventTypeName from Tmp

Which gives me the Tmp_Event table consisting of EventID's etc. (no duplicates). What I then want to do, is compare the 'Tmp_event' table and an already existing 'Event' table. These two tables are in fact identical. I would like to insert any records from 'Tmp_Event' into 'Event' if they do not already exist in 'Event'.

This query gives me all records that do not exist in 'Event'

SELECT EventID, EventType, EventTYpeName from Tmp_Event
WHERE EventID NOT IN (SELECT EventID from Event)

How can I change this query into performing an INSERT INTO Event as well?

Hope this makes sense :)

Comparing 2 Datetime Fields

Jan 17, 2002

I would like to compare 2 fields.. One of which is generated by the application upon insert. The other which is today's date.

In other words I want all records with today's date.

Problem is I get no results because I'm also apparently comparing the time.

Do I use a CONVERT function on my select & GETDATE outputs?

Thanks,

Comparing Datetime Fields

May 22, 2002

I have a table with a DateTime field that has Dates in the format of mm/dd/yyyy I want to do a simple count on the table for the previous day but keep getting 0 for the results. Here is the script I've been trying.

SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM mytbl
WHERE Collected_Date = DateAdd (dd, -1, GetDate())

It appears to me that the time portion of the DateAdd function keeps the matches that I am looking for from happening. What am I missing or am I going about this all wrong?

Comparing Name Fields In Same Table

Urgent Need For Problem Of Increase In Database Size For Ntext Type Fields

Jan 22, 2006

I had several databases under sqlserver ce 2.0 (in my Pocket PC) which contained ntext fields. The size of the databases varies from 50,000 to 700,000 records. The size of an ntext field is from 4 bytes to 2 megabytes.

When I recreated my databases under sql server 2005 mobile on my desktop using VS2005 (see my post just under this one), I saw a big difference between the old and new database sizes. This problem was mentioned in one of the posts in this forum and the reply was to replace ntext data with ncharvar type.

Since most of my data was longer than 4000 bytes (which is the limit for nvarchar type), I couldn't use this suggestion. Instead, I changed my ntext type to image type and used a GetByte conversion.

No change! The size of the new database is still 50 % larger than the original. Since the difference is around 300 MB, this is an unacceptable thing.

Now, I either wait from somebody to suggest a new solution (apart from keeping the ntext data in a separate binary file and keep index of the records of this file in the records of sql database) or, most preferably, have

Microsoft solve this problem as soon as possible.

Thanks for any help in advance

Function That Replaces Ntext And Compares Ntext With Nvarchar

Nov 28, 2007

I am running this query to an sql server 2000 database from my aspcode:"select * from MyTable whereMySqlServerRemoveStressFunction(MyNtextColumn) = '" &MyAdoRemoveStressFunction(MyString) & "'"The problem is that the replace function doesn't work with the ntextdatatype (so as to replace the stresses with an empty string). I hadto implement the MySqlServerRemoveStressFunction, i.e. a function thattakes a column name as a parameter and returns the text contained inthis column having replaced some letters of the text (the letters withstress). Unfortunately, I could not do that because user-definedfunctions cannot return a value of ntext. So I have the following idea:"select * from MyTable whereCheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStesses(MyNtextColum n, '" & MyString &"')"How can I implement the CheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStessesfunction? Subreports: Parameter Value Dropdown Shows Sum And Count Fields But Not The Actual Data Fields.

Jan 28, 2008

I have just started using SQL Server reporting services and am stuck with creating subreports.

I have a added a sub report to the main report. When I right click on the sub report, go to properties -> Parameters, and click on the dropdown for Parameter Value, I see all Sum and Count fields but not the data fields.

For example, In the dropdownlist for the Parameter value, I see Sum(Fields!TASK_ID.Value, "AppTest"), Count(Fields!TASK_NAME.Value, "CammpTest") but not Fields!TASK_NAME.Value, Fields!TASK_ID.Value which are the fields retrieved from the dataset assigned to the subreport.

When I manually change the parameter value to Fields!TASK_ID.Value, and try to preview the report, I get Error: Subreport could not be shown. I have no idea what the underlying issue is but am guessing that it's because the field - Fields!TASK_ID.Value is not in the dropdown but am trying to link the main report and sub report with this field.

Am I missing something here? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Sirisha

Transact SQL :: Get One Row From Multiple Based On Fields And Also Get Sum Of Decimal Fields?

Jul 2, 2015

I am using MS SQL 2012.  I have a table that contains all the data that I need, but I need to summarize the data and also add up decimal fields while at it.  Then I need a total of those added decimal fields. My data is like this:

I have Providers, a unique ID that Providers will have multiples of, and then decimal fields. Here are my fields:

ID, provider_name, uniq_id, total_spent, total_earned

Here is sample data:

1, Harbor, A07B8, 500.00, 1200.00
2, Harbor, A07B8, 400.00, 800.00
3, Harbor, B01C8, 600.00, 700.00
4, Harbor, B01C8, 300.00, 1100,00
5, LifeLine, L01D8, 700.00, 1300.00
6, LifeLine, L01D8, 200.00, 800.00

I need the results to be just 3 lines:

Harbor, A07B8, 900.00, 2000.00
Harbor, B01C8, 900.00, 1800.00
LifeLine, L01D8, 900.00, 2100.00

But then I would need the totals for the Provider, so:

Harbor, 1800.00, 3800.00

Update Fields With Data From Other Fields In Same Row

Jun 30, 2000

Pardon me if this question is too elementary. I am trying to create a trigger that will cause certain datafields to be updated with values from other data fields in the same row when a certain column, created specifically to fire the trigger, is updated. The purpose of this is to reduce data entry by field personnel.I think I have the create trigger statement correct, but I'm a little confused on the update statement.

In a nutshell, how can I write something like:
UPDATE "TABLENAME"
SET DATAFIELD1 = DATAFIELD2
WHERE RECORDNUMBER = (THE SAME RECORD NUMBER)

I do know that I have to ensure that sp_dboption Recursive Triggers value is set to false, thanks.

Using LIKE To Find Any Of Fields In One Table In Fields Of Another

Jul 31, 2013

I have a list of items in one table and a field (pageName) in another table that may contain one of the aforementioned items somewhere within that field. There is no fixed position within the field where the itemNo may be so I can't just use SUBSTRING(pageName,2,5) in(select itemNo from tblItem).

Logically, it's like I need to combine IN and LIKE: select pageName where pageName LIKE IN %select itemNo from tblitemNo%..LIKE can only handle one comparison string.

Ntext Value

Mar 6, 2004

hi all,
I am new to sql server.
I need some help regarding ntext value.I am using an insert stored proc to insert the value into ntext field, till now i have been using a varchar variable to pass the value. but i think this doesn't work when the size exceeds the limit of varchar and also what if i want to perform group insert?
and the major issue i am concerned about is, i don't want to update this field quite often.I need to check whether the existing ntext value and the new value which i want to insert are different.I want to do it in a better way than processing both values entirely.I want to make sure that the update statement is executed only when both values differ.

Drillthrough In Calculated Fields Enable When Drillthrough Option Is Disable In Original Fields, Is This A BUG?

Jan 21, 2008

Hi people
My users are having troubles with link to default drillthrough report when reports are exported to excel (they REALLY don't like this behavior ), so I decided set all of them disabled in report model, this work fine, but calculated field in reports has this drillthrough link.

Let me show you the situation. Entity Product has an UnitaryCost field, I set the EnableDrillthrough Property in False so when I export a report with this field, no link is shown.

But if I create in the report a calculated field Round(UnitaryCost) this field has a Drillthrough Link

Is this the standard and expected behavior? or its simply a BUG?

Have I done something wrong in my model? and in this case, How I can correct this?

regards.

Problem Using Ntext

Jun 20, 2006

Hi, I'm using a column (ntext) to store some long strings. An example of the string that I need to store is the following:

436;Implementing A Gang - Awareness Program/And A Middle School
Gang  Prevention Curriculum. Doctoral Th;Samuels;Donald J;Miami
IV;Administrators; At Risk; Child And Youth Studies; Community;
Community Members; Drop Out Prevention; Educational Leadership;
Law/Criminal Justice; Peer Counseling; Principals; Secondary Education

I wrote a store procedure that does it, but it seems that the column
space is not enough for the above string. The string in fact, is
truncated and only the following portion is stored in my table:

436;Implementing A Gang - Awareness Program/And A Middle School Gang
Prevention Curriculum. Doctoral Th;Samuels;Donald J;Miami
IV;Administrators; At Risk; Child And Youth Studies; Community;
Community Members; Drop Out Prevention; Educational Leadership

What can I do?

Ntext Problem

I am working in asp and using sql server 7. I have a section where the input is to long to use a char field so i had to set the field as ntext. Now i am trying to do a section where i wanna look and see if the field is null and if not then it is to perform an operation. If it is null it is to skip and go to the next field in the record. However it is not performing this operation. It sees the first field and does pass the second one because it is null. If i put in a character into the field it will go on until it gets to a null again and then stops. Any suggestions?
