How To Copy DataBases Between SQL Express Instances.
Apr 26, 2006
I am developing an application that uses SQL Server Express. Everything is running great, except that I can't figure out how to copy a DataBase from my server at work onto my laptop so that I may test it at home...
How can I copy the DataBase from my Server at work to my laptop? I'm on the network at work, I just can't figure out how to copy it...
Ok, I am new to Reporting Services but am facing an issue today.
A developer decided to consolidate two ReportServer databases onto a single 2005 database instance with different names. Fine. But he is trying to get one Reporting Services instance to somehow process both sets of databases. (ie. ReportServer and ReportServer_dev.) My opinion is that he is irrational. I would think that he would need to have two separate instances of Reporting Services (running on one server) with each configured to access one of the two ReportServer databases. Is that correct or am I all wet?
Hi all, I want to do SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express and I have read the following articles and books: (i) Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio in http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2006/11/22/connecting-to-sql-express-user-insta... (ii) Managing SQL Server Express with SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express Edition in http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sql/2005/mgsqlexpwssmse.mspx (iii) Chapter 16 - Going Beyand Transact-SQL: Using the SQL Common Language Rutime (SQLCLR) in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for Dummies (iv) Chapter 21 - Working with the Common Language Runtime in Microsft SQL Server 2005 Programming for Dummies (v) Chapter 4 - Introduction to Common Language Runtime (CLR) Integration in Programming SQL Server 2005 by Bill Hamilton. I want to create an SQLCLR project "HelloWorld" by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. But I am still not sure how to get it started, because I do not understand the following things: (1) Pipe Name for a User Instance, (2) Enabling (or Disabling) the CLR by using Transact-SQL, (3) Creating a Transact-SQL script, (4) Creating an Assembly, (5) Creating a backup device, etc. I need to see some simple examples of SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. Please help and tell me where in the websites I can find them.
I am attempting to use the copy wizard to copy databases from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2 w/ FP1.
The copy fails with a login failure to SQL Server 2005. I have a user id & password under Windows for both servers. I have a user id and password under SQL security with the called for admin security rights.
The 2005 server has two instances, 20 databases, two dozen maintenance plans, and over a hundred users. I really would like to use the utility so I don't have to recreate everything manually.
Maybe a stupid question, but I'm trying to copy some databases from one server to another. The copy databases wizard says the job is successful and I can see that the job has been done on the remote server. But the copied databases are not there. What do I do?
I have a general question relating to SQL Express User Instances. Our application connects to a local SQL Express database through the default SQLEXPRESS user instance. My question is simply whether a user may experience a problem in connecting to our application's database should another application already be connected through the same default user instance (SQLEXPRESS)? The two applications are therefore running similtaneously. Also, are there any limit to how many applications could use the same service similtaneously?
Using SQL Express, UNDER COMPUTER management, SQL Server Configuraqtion Manager, SQL Server 2005 Network configuration Ihave the following listed instances
CSOLUTION - not listed under services
MSSQLSERVER - Disabled
SQLEXPRESS - Diaabled
SQLTEST - Disabled
SQLEXPRESSDATA - used by VB05 program
Questions
a) how do I delete all the instancces I do not use. In MSDE, each instance could be removed via the add/remove programs, but I don't see how to remove it under express
b) since SQLEXPRESS is the default for an SQL Express installation, I would like for the VBB05 program to use that instance; how do I do that?
I am preparing to move from sql7 to sql2000 and and considering the copy database wizard to move the databases. The thing that I am concerned with is this passage from BOL
"A database with the identical name on both source and destination servers cannot be moved or copied"
This to me says that the database name cannot be the same on source and destination servers. Yet, you would want the database name to be the same from an application point of view (developers get real nasty when you change database information on them).
Does this mean I cannot use the copy database wizard? Must I use sp_attatch_db?
I am new to sql server and the database concepts and just started learning. I want to copy a database and local package from a old sql server to a new server. can anybody guide me with the steps? I am very new to this field so if you could give me detailed steps i would very much appreciate it.
Could anyone possibly help me out with an issue I am having... I need to copy all my SQL2005 databases from Server1 to Server2. How can I, using SSIS, copy all the databases and not just 1 specific one (database transfer task)??? My actual task is much deeper than this, but this is the main problem I seem to be encountering and I cannot find this anywhere on the web...
Over and above the what I have mentioned, is there a way to also specify a name of the target DB the copy will go through to? e.g. Server 1 has 3 instances, each one with a different copy of the same DB. I would like to copy all 3 copies to Server 2 running 1 SQL instance, but to target DB's like DB_dev, DB_prod and DB_test.
The latter section is not so crucial at the moment, but the first part is really an issues I am struggling with at the moment...
I have configured several jobs in the SQL Server Agent which do a copy of databases from a cluster of SQL 2005 to another SQL 2005 server. I did these from the "Copy Dabatase Wizard". When I run these it works fine with "small" databases but with the two bigger ones I get the following error after 10 minutes since execution started:

The disabled instances will not start due to various error messages.
Under Computer, Manager, Services, more instances are listsed, which also will not start:
SQLEXPRESSDATA for example (which is disabled)
I would like to remove CSOLUTION since it is not used; it will not remove from control panel or manually via http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/909967 . You get various error messages, such as
Another application has exclusive access to the file c:program files...errorlog. Please shut down all other applications, then try again.
Even after a reboot, I still get this error.
I want to install and use instance SQLExpress, and I cannot remove it, but it will not start, and trying to reinstall it fails.
It was simple under MSDE 2000, no2 it seems to be impossible.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Honestly, I would like to uninstall SQL Express 2005 completely (except the BCM instant), and start over, but canot find a way to do this. SQL Express is a mess, I have spent days trying to resolve this, and am still where I started. Thanks, bob
I am trying to find the best way to copy specific tables from one databaseto another when the source and target database names are not always thesame. Can you use variables to specify (or prompt the user) to providesource and target databases? The target database will exist with the thesame tables as the source. The tables to copy will always be the same.Example:UserA wants to copy 10 tables from Data1 to Data2UserB wants to copy 10 tables from Data4 to Data5I'm sure a script can do this in Query Analyzer but is there a more userfriendly method when the user has ony standard SQL tools? Thanks in advance.
I have a database on sqlserver 2000 which contains some tables which receive Create/Read/Update statements from applications, and +-5 tables which contain a sort of read-only data: the applications are only reading from these tables.
Sometimes these 5 tables need to be updated with new data. Currently I am doing this as follows:
Execute a long-running operation (e.g. 1 week), which will add new data, against a Test-database (which is a restore from a backup of the original database) Some people do some checks to see if the new data in the Test-database is correct If (2) is OK, the only thing which needs to be done is copying the data of the 5 tables in testdatabase to the 5 tables of the production-database.For (3), I currently use a DTS-package which consists of a "Copy SQL Server Objects"-task. This task is configured to copy the 5 tables (objects) from testdatabase to productiondatabase. The data in these 5 tables is around 20GB, and this task takes a lot of time compared to a backup/restore of the same size of data. I already tried to speed it up by creating different filegroups and wanted to restore only 1 filegroup but you can read here that making a filegroup backup on a testdatabase and trying to restore it on a production database won't work. Is there some other way to speed this up? Is my current way of working good practice?
I would like to have more info on UserInstances concept of SQLExpress 2005.
Can i find any code samples for this feature in MSDN.
I have tried using the following links.. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143401(SQL.90).aspx http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143684(SQL.90).aspx http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnsse/html/sqlexpuserinst.asp http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms254504.aspx http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165690(SQL.90).aspx http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143446(SQL.90).aspx
any other links will be helpful for me in this regard.
I installed SQL Server Express trail for 3 times each with new instance. Now I came to know that I need to have a default instance. I un-installed the SQL Server Express and tried to install it again. It still says I have installed instances and if I select default instance the option buttons are un-checked and disabled. I tried to delete all the folders related to the SQL Server installationa dn tried but still I see the same thing. Please help me in istalling the default instance.
But I'm not quite clear on what will happen if you currently have SQL Server Express 2005 installed with User Instances, and then you launch the installer for SP1.
Will it also update the User Instance? If so, how could I tell? When I go to the registry for the User Instance it has the older version value ie.
Hi,When I attempt to add the membership functionality to a database created within VWD Express, by using the aspnet_regsql.exe application (connecting to ./SQLEXPRESS using Windows authentication), the database I've created within VWD Express doesn't appear within the list of accessible databases. I have the same problem when attempting to access the same database within Management Studio Express.Does this mean that databases created from within VWD Express don't use the same storage mechanism or paradigm as those already available within Management Studio Express? Or perhaps I need to somehow register the database using Management Studio Express? As a side note, I'm not sure if the "File/Open File" menu option within Management Studio Express holds the answer to my problems, but rather bizarrely, it crashes Management Studio Express when I select it.Apologies for the rambling - in essence my question is "How can I make databases created within VWD Express appear within aspnet_regsql.exe and/or Management Studio Express?"Many thanks,Jon
When I am in Visual Studio 2005, and I try to add an SQL database, I get the following error "generating user instances in sql server is disabled. use sp_configure user instances enabled to generate user instances." I am currently using SQL server 2005 Express. What do I need to do, to create an SQL database? Thanks in advance.
Copy objects and data between SQL Server databases " Display the Select Objects to Transfer dialog box, where you can specify both objects and data to copy, if both the data source and destination are Microsoft® SQL Server™ databases. The objects you can transfer include tables, views, stored procedures, defaults, rules, constraints, user-defined data types, logins, users, roles, and indexes. You can transfer objects only between multiple instances of SQL Server version 7.0, from an instance of SQL Server 7.0 to an instance of SQL Server 2000, and between multiple instances of SQL Server 2000. "
can I apply "Copy objects and data between SQL Server databases" to run in two different sqlserver 2000 ( not an instance ) . what I mean is I have two different sql servers located in two different locations( I am not using an instance installation) can I still run the copy and get an identical database in both servers. Q2. if I have two sql server 2000 with different collations (one is binary and the other is the default) will I be able to run the copy wizard and still have an identical copy of sql server in both servers.
I personally tried to run the copy wizard and IT NEVER WORKED FOR ME and I really do not know the reason.
Just wondering. On some workstations and a couple of servers we have apps each running an instance of MSDE so these machines each have anywhere between 2 - 5 instances of MSDE each.
Would it be benificial from a resources point of view (not to mention a patching one) if we set up one instance of Express to replace the multiple MSDE ones?
Hi all, I have read/studied (i) Working with Databases in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express in http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/vwd.aspx, (ii) Xcopy Deployment (SQL Server Express) in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx, (iii) User Instances for Non-Administrators in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143684.aspx, and (iv) Embedding SQL Server Server Express in Applications in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165660.aspx. I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project? Thanks in advance, Scott Chang
My client has a server running MS 2003 Server for Smal Business Server, and it has SQL Server Express 2005 installed (I believe it is installed 3 times, as part of SharePoint, Veritas Backup Exec and ACT! applications).
I am trying to implement an application that uses SQL Server 2000, but the Server 2003 SBS does not support that version. So I need to launch an additional instance of SQL Server Exp 2005.
To do so, do I need to download and install SQL Server Express 2005 software again? Or can I just run SQLSVR.exe from an existing instance, but with a different instance name (sqlservr.exe -s<InstanceName>?
The reason I need another instance is that these existing instances limit DDL statements.
I am new to this and compare it to launching MS Word multiple times - you don't need to reinstall Word to run it multiple times.
Is launching from the command line a bad idea - and if it is, what is the better way to ensure that it launches under the local system context a service?
Thanks in advance for any help and insights. It is much appreciated.
This is probably easy for some who have done it, but I have an installed Instance of SQL Server 2008 Express or SQL Server 2008 R2 Express I'll call Instance CCC and need to remove it. Â I have two other Express instances I'll call Instance AAA and Instance BBB. Â I want to uninstall Instance CCC without affecting the other two instances or the software that uses them. Â Instance CCC should have been installed as a SQL Server 2012 Express instance, so I need to remove the 2008 Instance of CCC and reinstall it as 2012. Â In all cases, I'm talking about SQL Server Express. Â Full SQL Server is not installed. Â
The Instances are all installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server. Â Â
I have read that I can do this through Control Panel  >  Programs and Features, but that I can corrupt or mess up the other instances (AAA and BBB) if I don't do it right.  I'm uneasy about this, not having done it before, and do not want to affect the users of the AAA and BBB instances! Â
I was contacted by the SAN team to test backup/restore of larger databases using a split-mirror backup (BCV) or clone that is taken from production db server and copied to another sql box. They want to use this process once a week. I see the mounted drives with the data/log files. All looks good. Initially I attempted to attach the databases and received (Unable to open the physical file db.mdf Operating System Error 5 Access is denied). I manually granting SQLServerMSSQLUser$<computer_name>$<instance_name> on all of the physical files 20 total. That worked.
Since this will be weekly, the SAN team performed the copy again and now none of the databases can communicate with the newly copied files. NTFS permissions need to be set again. I'm getting (Operating System error 21: the device is not ready). Is there something that I'm missing in this process how the vendor BCV clones the data and SQL communicates with the copied files as I was thinking it would be more automated process?
We have 10+ MSDE 2000 installations on the same network. Each install has a named instance and the machines connect to eachother via VB application. We have a couple SQL 2000 Standard boxes and a SQL 2005 box all running on the same network with no issues. The problem we have recently run into is with a SQL Express box. When the box is on the network OSQL stops finding the MSDE 2000 named instances on the network and only the SQL Express named instance appears in the list. The second the SQL Express box is removed from the network the named instances are visible. I monitored the UDP traffic and suspect there is an issue with the response from SQL Express to OSQL. Can't find any issues for this problem only report I found is if MSDE and Express are on the same machine.

I had a server with SQL Server 7.0 I installed a named instance of SQL Server 2000 and then i passed all my DB of the 7.0 instance to the 2000 instance. Then i removed the 7.0 instance, that was the default instance. So at the moment there is only the 2000 version, but it isn't the default instance Can the 2000 instance become the default instance? (So that clients can connect to it simply through computer name, and not creating an alias)
