SQL Server Backup File Format

Apr 18, 2006

The IT shop I work in installed MS-SQL Server last week for the solepurpose of converting a large MS-SQL Server database to a format thatInformix (our main database engine) can read. MSSQL Server installedperfectly, I can view/manipulate the little "Northwind" sampledatabase, back it up to a file, restore it (Microsoft Tape Format) justfine. But... The MSSQL Server "backup" file they sent me that I needto restore is in a format that I'm unfamiliar with. It is a large*.sqb file and when I try to restore (using Enterprise Manager - Rightclick on "empty" database, choose All Tasks, Restore Database - FromDevice, Point to File - I get the message: File is not a validMicrosoft Tape Format backup set.Looking at my little Northwind backup file in a hex editor I see thecharacters "TAPE" as the first 4 characters of the file. Looking atthe file that I'm unsuccessfully trying to restore in a hex editor Isee "SSBE". It's not in the standard "Microsoft Tape Format"apparently, but does anyone have any clue what might have created thisbackup file? I hope it's not some weird proprietary program! Anyhelp appreciated, thanks...Joe

Restore SQL Server Database From A File Backup

Mar 19, 2001

Hello,

I have a user database which has 1 data file and 1 logfile.
I did a complete backup of the database to a file on the disk drive, using Enterprise manager. Due to some reason, I had to drop the database. The only way I could restore it was by,
1. Create the database with the same name.
2. Restore the complete backup from the file device.

While doing so,
I get the message "Backup set holds the backup of daatabase other than the existing 'userdbname' database. BAckup terminating."

Is it because the database was dropped and recreated.
If I choose the option to overwrite, it restores successfully.

Is this normal and right way to do it? Is there any thing else that I need to take care of, while backup or restore?

Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
MMS

Importing DB Backup File To SQL Server 2005

Mar 14, 2007

Hi all,

I'm using shared sql space on a new provider and am trying to import a database backup file - of the format filename.db.

I cannot figure out how to import this file type using the 2005 express tools - I can connect to the database and create and drop tables alright, but I cannot just import the existing database.

I really haven't got the time on my connection to download the fully blown SQL server trial to be able to do this, so can anyone help me out with any easier solutions?

Cheers, Mike

Corruption Of Backup File On Remote Server

Jul 19, 2006

Dear all,

What I want to do is to backup my database through the SQL script, when the backup is successful, the .bak file is saved in my local harddisk. After that, I used the XYRunProc to execute a "copy" command to copy the .bak file to a remote server.

However, when I want to restore the database using the .bak on the remote server, I found that the .bak is corrupted. This problem does not exist if the file is copied to the remote server manually (click copy on local server and click paste on remote server).

Do anyone know what's the problem of this? This really made me very frustrated. Hope someone can help me, thank you very much!

Regards,
Strike

DB Engine :: Restore Backup File To Remote Server

Jul 8, 2015

I am working on a project for an SQL job. I am:

1.) Taking a database out of an availability group,
2.) Setting the recovery to simple,
3.) Shrinking the log file,
4.) Setting the recovery mode back to full,
5.) Then backing it up.

I need to restore the file to my secondary server with replace and non recovery mode. I am having trouble performing that call?  I have the code to reestablish the database to the availability group if I can get the restore feature working.

How I can run a SQL Server Transaction Log Backup using a Windows CMD File.  It's that posible?  Anyone know the command or how do this?

We already have a application monitoring our SQL databases.  Everytime the transaction log get full, it sends us an alert.  Would be better if our application repair the problem itself, executing a command (Windows CMD File).

I'm not a expert using SQL databases or MS DOS Prompt commands.

SQL Server 2008 :: Finding Backup File Size In Advance?

Mar 8, 2015

My backups are failing sometimes. My db size is around 400 GB and we are taking backup to the remote server. Free size available on the disk is showing 600 GB but my database full backup run more than 10 hrs and failed. The failure reason is there is not enough space on the disk.

What could be the possible failure reasons? It has more than the the database size on the backup server but why it is showed that msg on the job failures. I noticed same thing occurred couple of times in the past.

Is there any way to find how much the backup file will be generate before we run the backup job?

i.e. If we run the full backup of test1 database now, it will generate ....bak file for that test1 db

currently we are using maintenance plan and with compression (2008R2) and the database has TDE enabled

SQL Server 2008 :: Backup To Device / UNC File / Generates OS Error

Aug 11, 2009

It's OS / SQL related. I backup to a UNC device, and frequently get a network related error - but not always. And the error is also OS related...

The scene: 64 bit Windows Server 2008 hosts 64 bit SQL 2008 Standard, and devices are created to point to 64 Server 2008 Server B (ServerBSQL_backupsdvc_DB.bak). The database is backed up daily, on a job, and when run the following error is returned:

The file is generated, the same size as a successful backup, but the job terminates unsuccessful.I have tried to delete the devices' file, and then the backup usually succeeds. This may point to a permissions' type error, but the user the job is run under is a domain admin. The destination server is not unavailable during this time, and the network shares also remain active throughout the excersize - although I haven't got a way to "prove" this.

I have a few databases that backup to the UNC described above (different files) that don't fail..My SQL2000 server backs up it's databases to the SQL2008 server, and those backups don't fail with this error.

My research has led me to understand that the 64bit OS tries to buffer the files it receives from another server, and I was wondering if this could be influencing the backups as the destination server is also 64 bit Windows Server 2008.

##20090812## UPDATE

I tried another way to do the backup; with the same results:

Backup database Infovest to disk = '
iscsrv-dcm04
iscsrv-sql01_backupsdvc_Infovest_Z.bak' with INIT,STATS=1

[code]....

SQL Server 2012 :: Spool Backup Command Result To A Text File

Jun 9, 2015

I am running backups on SQL Sever express and I take backups via the batch file executing the TSQL as below. This works perfectly fine, I just need to be able to spool out the backup completion log. What TSQL command can I use to do that?

My batch file looks like this:

@echo off
sqlcmd -S SERVER01 -E -i H:master_scriptsTOM_FAM_log.sql

Which will the call the TOM_FAM_log.sql :

DECLARE @name VARCHAR(50) -- database name
DECLARE @path VARCHAR(256) -- path for backup files
DECLARE @fileName VARCHAR(256) -- filename for backup
DECLARE @fileDate VARCHAR(20) -- used for file name
SET @path = 'H:BackupTOM_FAM'

[Code] ....

Usually if we schedule the backups using the maintenance plan, we can chose reporting options that can spool the result of the backup to a text file. What is the T-SQL for the spool report to a text file.

This option produces a file that writes logs with the details I posted below. I would like to do the same or similar using T-SQL in my code.

Microsoft(R) Server Maintenance Utility (Unicode) Version 11.0.3000
Report was generated on "SERVER01".
Maintenance Plan: Backup logs
Duration: 00:00:00
Status: Succeeded.

DB Engine :: How To Restore From Current LDF Log File And Old BAK Backup File

Jun 11, 2015

My customer got a total hard drive failure. After sending it to drive recovery specialist we were able to recover the LDF log file (MyDB_0.LDF).But the MDF file was completely destroyed (MyDB.MDF).They have a good full backup from a month ago.

1) Installed SQL Server 2012 on a new PC
2) Created a new database of same name (MyDB) - with same MDF and LDF file names as original
3) Took the new database offline
4) deleted the MDF and LDF files of the new database
5) put "MyDB_0.LDF" in the place of the LDF file I just deleted
6) put the database back on-line
7) after hitting F5 to refresh databases - it shows "MyDB (Recovery Pending)"
8) tried to do Tail Log Backup with this command
BACKUP LOG [MyDB] TO DISK = N'C:BACKUPMyDB_TailLog.bak'
WITH NO_TRUNCATE

And I get this error...

Msg 3447, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Could not activate or scan all of the log files for database 'MyDB'.

The sad thing is I know we can get this data back using ApexSQL-Log. I can see all the transactions since the last full backup in this program - so the log file is not damaged. But my client doesn't want to pay the $2000 fee for this software. There has to be a way to restore this data, without having to purchase a third party tool.
