Performance Monitor Counter Registry Value Has Failed

May 21, 2007

Good Day to all.
I uninstalled SQL server express and now when i am trying to reinstall it the installing fails because of some "Performance Monitor Counter registry" thing.

This microsoft link has some information on it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910229/en-us

I have pasted the information that the link provides below.
***********************************************************************

2.2 System Configuration Checker Fails with "Performance Monitor Counter Check Failed" Message

System Configuration Checker (SCC) verifies the value of the Performance Monitor Counter registry key before SQL Server installation begins. If SCC cannot verify the existing registry key, or if SCC cannot run the Lodctr.exe system program, the SCC check fails, and Setup is blocked. To complete setup, you must manually increment the registry key.

Note Incorrectly editing the registry can cause serious problems that might require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from editing the registry incorrectly can be resolved. Before editing the registry, back up any valuable data. For more information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
256986 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986/) Description of the Microsoft Windows registry To manually increment the counter registry key, follow these steps:

1.
On the taskbar, click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.

2.
Navigate to the following registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib]. Look up the following keys:

€˘
"Last Counter"=dword:00000ed4 (5276)

€˘
"Last Help"=dword:00000ed5 (5277)

3.
Verify the values. The Last Counter value from the previous step (5276) must be equal to the maximum value of the Counter key from Perflib09 in the following registry key, and the Last Help value from the previous step (5277) must be equal to the maximum value of the Help key from Perflib09 in the following registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib09].

Note "009" is the key used for the English (United States) language.

4.
If necessary, modify the value for the Last Counter and Last Help values in the Perflib key. Right-click Last Counter or Last Help in the right pane, select Modify, click Base = Decimal, set the value in the Value data field, and then click OK. Repeat for the other key, if necessary, and then close the registry editor.

5.
Run SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Setup again.***********************************************************************
My problem is i cannot follow the guidelines correctly.

Firstly my "Last Counter" looks like : 0x000002414(9236) and my "Last Help" Looks like: 0x00002415(9237) and not the values above. Should I change them to the above values? And if so how specifically?
The instruction says to change the registry 009 values of "Counter" & "Help" to the last values of "last Counter" and "Last Help" respectively but when I open the keys( counter & help) for 009 I get a whole list of values. I am also including a sample of the values that i see in the 009 keys. Which one do i increment?

Sql Server 2005 Install On SBS2003 Fails Due To Registry Key Permissions

Mar 10, 2008

I am posting this to hopefully help someone else that encounters the same issue in the future...

Server: SBS 2003 Premium, with exchange and with all service packs/patches applied.
Server-name: NEWSERVER
Server migrated from: OLDSERVER
Important notes:

This server was migrated from another SBS 2003 on different HW following the instructions provided by microsoft.
The oldserver had exchange and sql 2005 installed on it.
The new server has Office Accounting 2005 installed, but I don't think that matters...

I am trying to install SQL 2005 from the SBS2003-R2 DVD onto the new server, and get the following error:

Error:
---

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
------------------------------

SQL Server Setup failed to modify security permissions on registry key SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLServerSuperSocketNetLib for user Administrator. To proceed, verify that the account and domain running SQL Server Setup exist, that the account running SQL Server Setup has administrator privileges, and that the registry key exists on the destination drive.

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.1399.06&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=29508&EvtType=sqlca%5csqlsddlca.cpp%40Do_sqlRegSDDL%40ExceptionInSDDL%40x7344

------------------------------
BUTTONS:

&Abort
&Retry
&Ignore
------------------------------

---

I looked in the registry, and the administrators group has full control over this key.

Digging into the SQLSETUP log file, at the end I see:
---

Configuring ACL:
Object: HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLServerSuperSocketNetLib
ACL: (A;CI;KR;;;[SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$NEWSERVER])(A;CI;KR;;;NS)
Action: 0x100
Failed ACL:
ReplaceSDDLSid is failed at the error code 1332; Converted SDDL: '(A;CI;KR;;;[SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$NEWSERVER])(A;CI;KR;;;NS)'
Error Code: 0x80077344 (29508)
Windows Error Text: Source File Name: sqlcasqlsddlca.cpp
Compiler Timestamp: Tue Sep 13 01:08:29 2005
Function Name: ExceptionInSDDL
Source Line Number: 65

---

Looking into AD Users+Computers, there is not a group present for SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$NEWSERVER but there is one for SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$OLDSERVER.

It appears that the install did not create the new group that was necessary..

Once I duplicated the OLDSERVER group, renaming it to have NEWSERVER, the installation completed without error.

I hope this saves someone else a few hours of pain.

Problem With Registry Keys While Trying To Install SQL Server 2005 Express

Oct 7, 2007

I've been trying to re-install VS2005 & MS SQL Server express, and I've hit a snag trying to install SQL Server express.

I started by trying to use the automatic uninstaller for VS and had problems so I tried manually uninstalling it (bad idea), which didn't work either, so I re-installed VS completely, then uninstalled it using the automatic uninstaller. I then tried installing, which worked for VS2005, but it didn't work for SQL Server. I've tried 3 times now, and each time it says SQL Server 2005 failed to install.

I checked the summary.txt log found in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOG and from what I understand, it seems that I don't have priveledges to change some registry keys. This has me really lost because I'm installing as Administrator, as you can see from the log below, so I should have access to the registry. Administrator is the only account on the computer so I know I haven't messed up priveledges from another account.

I've included the contents of the summary log below if anyone can make any sense of it and has any ideas I can try.

Problem With Identity Column Increment In Sql Server 2005

Jan 22, 2008

Hi
I am trying to use the identity data type ( column)
I am using examples from the book and management studio in sql server 2005.
I am using the identity property for the customer Id in customers table.I accidentatly executed the querry twice and I had two same record with different customer id numbers of 1 and 2 . I realised the problem and I had to delete the second record.
The problem is now even if I have deteted the 2nd record with customer id 2 , when I insert a new record the identity value ( customer Id) increments with a number after the value I deleted. i.e if I deleted a second row with customer id 2 ( identity 2) when I enter a new record it enters with a customer id of 3 and whenever i add a new record it increments from there.
So instead of first record have cust id 1 and second record customer id 2 etc , I get first record with cust id 1 , second record with cust id 3 , third record cust id 4 etc.
How can I get rid of this wrong values of identity values whenever I delete a record and try to add a new record?

Thanks

SQL Server 2005 Setup

Oct 20, 2007

I just recently installed SQL Server 2005. I have a question about "SQL Server Management Studio".
I want my machine to act as the db server, so I can learn the basics of SQL Server 2005. Once I open
"SQL Server Management Studio" and attempt to connect to a database engine, I get the following error

Cannot connect to database engine....

I don't see any services running in the windows services console, I used to
work with SQL Server v7 awhile back and I remember within the left frame of "SQL Server Management Studio"
window, in the Registered Servers frame that the "Database Engine" icon usually had a green right arrow in it
when it was running correctly. Right now I have this "Database Engine" icon but there is a white circle with
no right green arrow signifying that it is running....

Thanks in advance for your help,
Wes

2005 Developer - Perf Monitor Counter Check Failed Message

Nov 11, 2006

Trying to install 2005 Dev edition in xp pro, sp2.

Performance Monitor Counter Check Failed Error.
Had to stop the install twice at the point it verified what components were to be included as
the docs were not going to be installed. Resolved the issue.

Now it won't pass the system config test because the registry is not the way it wants it.
I look up the messages and the only solution is to hack the registry and risk my system.

This is nuts.

Isn't there some way to restart cleanly without hacking registry keys ?

Help.

Hi all,

I'm new in this forum and id'like to post a strange error i can't solve by myself.

On a Win2003Server setted as a Stand Alone Server (without Active Directory) i installed my SQL SEERVER 2005 Workgroup edition with Management Studio and ODBC: Everything fine. a software house installed a IRP based on SQL Server: everything fine too.

They asked me to buil Dctive Directory on server. I should uninstall SQL Server, build up the AD domain and then reinstall SQL Server and from SQL Management Studio reconnect all the db.

Ok with uninstall operations, ok with AD setup but when i tryed to setup Sql Server 2005 it starts fine the DB engine but during management component setup i receive this error:

Problem In X64 SQL Server 2005 Setup

Jan 20, 2006

Hi,

Trying to install 64-bit SQL Server 2005 RTM on Windows 2003 x64 Server with SP 1. The Reporting services option is not enabled in the installation steps. The installation process gets completed without any errors, but the Reporting Services is not installed.

The server has IIS installed, the .NET framework 2.0 is installed by SQL Server 2005 RTM itself. Am I doing anything wrong.

Can anyone help/suggest ?

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2005 Setup Error

"Setup failed" error when the installation auto-setups "Workstation Components, Books Online and Developement Tools" . It showed "MainEngineThread is returning 21 The device is not ready" in the log. Could not find a solution online. So I have to seek help here.

Here is the log:

I removed the SQL 2005 Express then started installing the Client Components in 2005 developer version. I tried to install into C drive or another drive but got the same error.

Anyone knows anything about it?

Many thanks.

How To Setup Local SQL Server 2005 DB

Oct 12, 2006

I installed 2005 Developer edition on a local workstation in our lab. I can connect to a network SQL Server with it just fine. But I do not have a local instance of SQL Server on this workstation.

How do I create a local instance of SQL Server? (box is WinXPPro-SP3)

After accepting the defaults for this installation, I noticed that there were no "local" instances of SQL server available, whereby I could go out and create my own test databases locally or copy a few tables from a production server over to my local box for testing. I'm looking through the books online and do not see (maybe I missed it) the steps to creating a local instance for setting up a workstaiton as a 'test' environment.

Assistance is appreciated.

Fail To Install SQL Server 2005 (Clustering): SQL Server Setup Was Unable Add User

Oct 24, 2007

Hello all,

I have tried to install SQL Server 2005 Standard edition with CLUSTERING. I faced a problem and everything rolls back.

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
------------------------------

SQL Server Setup was unable add user domain1xyz to local group domain1IT Security Admin-Group.

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.1399.06&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=29512&EvtType=sqlca%5csqlsecurityca.cpp%40Do_sqlGroupMember%40Do_sqlGroupMember%40x6ba

I have refered to PostI=1659185 posted by Fly and it still won't be able to fix my problem.

I have added LOCAL SERVICE into the local group (SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$AAA$MSSQLSERVER), but it still can't work.

Please can someone help me on this. Thank a lot....

SQL Server 2005 Express Adv. SP2 Setup Fails To Install SQL Server Database Serices Only.

Mar 26, 2007

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:

"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".

I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.

The most puzzling to me things are:

- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).

- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".

During installation before failing the setup displays following:

"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.

Thanks.

Hi,

Is it possible to install SQL Server 2005 Eval on a Virtual PC 2007
client running Server 2008 Beta? Nothing says it isn't possible, it
says I need to service pack it right away, but before it gets started
it comes up with the error 'sqlcu.dll failed to load'. Anyone know
what this is all about?

Any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated.

Setup Issue: Unable To Install SQL Server 2005 Express On Windows 2003 Server SP2

Aug 17, 2006

Hello Experts,

I have been unable to install SQL Express 2005 Server on my Windows 2003 Server (with SP2 installed). I keep getting an error message saying that Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is not installed.

So, I downloaded Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) but whenever I try to install it I get an error message saying that "the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying" and that there is no need to install the update and it stops there.

Is there a workaround to this? How can I get Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 installed? I tried going to the Windows Update site, I already have everything installed and I even started the Windows Installer service manually. Has anyone else experienced this?

How can I get SQL Server 2005 Express installed if not how can I install SQL Server 2000 on tihs machine? The only reason I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 is because wanted to try it so I uninstalled SQL Server 2000 now I can no longer install SQL Server 2000 again because it won't let me because of the SP2 patch.

Help! :(
