I have a big problem with Reporting Services 2005 working on Windows 2003 Server.
RS work as Network service, on subdomain reporting.mydomain with SSL wildcard certificate *.mydomain,
Anonymous access: disabled and basic authentication: enabled
ReportManager and reportServer has defualt virtual folders (/reporting, /reportserver)
My problem is:
1) I can't manage security roles and site settings with report maanger. when I try assign roles to new user or group I get followng error:
"The user or group name 'BUILTINAdministrators' is not recognized. (rsUnknownUserName) Get Online Help"
when i try to execute reports in report manager, parameters controls are not displayed correctly (very simple text boxes) and I can see:
The selected report is not ready for viewing. The report is still being rendered or a report snapshot is not available. (rsReportNotReady)
and I can't see my report in browser (IE 6.0) but only export to PDF, Excel...
other functionality are working fine i.e upload new files, creatign folders....
2) Also my reportserver virtual folder does not work correctly.
When I navigate to mydomain/reportserver I can see content of this virtual folder, than when I navigate to ReportService.soap i can see normal ReportServer view

May 2, 2008I have a report that has three levels of grouping including headers (containing titles) and footers (containing summary values). I would like to programatically show/hide these header/footer sections based on a Show/Hide paramter. Is that possible? Currently I work around the problem by just having two physical reports (one with the header/footers, one without)

I am working on constructing a software layer around some features of the RDL language that would allow me to programatically generate reports.
I am reading the RDL specification language, and I do not understand three things:
1) How the DataSet element is populated by the query or more precisely how do the <Field> elements capture all the rows inside the table that is being queries?
To my understanding I wilkl have to define several fields that correspond to all columns of interest in the query.
But that is only for one row (?!) How do the rest of the rows get populated? Does the server recursively create new rows based on my definitions until it matches row for row all the data in the table?
2) Once the elements are inside a DataSet how do make use of that data to render it in a table.
I understand how the DataSource, DataSet, and Table work individually, yet I do not understand how to establish a flow of data between DataSet and Table.
3) Do I even need to use a <Table> as an RDL element in order to organize the data in an excel table?
I would appreciate any help. Thank you!
Problem In SQL Developing As Restricted User (member Of User Group)
Nov 19, 2005Greetings,VWD EE and other Tools do not have problems working O.K. on my machine, when I am logged-on as restricted(limited) user, both environment and local web server are functioning, and it was MS effort to do it right.BUT the Problem is, when I try to connect to database->new DB connection(either through vwd or management studio etc). I get an Error - which should be written to event log (according to msg) but it isn't - that I can't connect. I am sure that it is because NO SQL SERVER2005EXPRESS instance is running, which I think is the only prerequisite to have it work (I do not need sqlbrowser service I am doint local development).SQL2005express service is configured on MANUAL start. I can start it as administrator through SQL config manager, but it is not convienient and what I want. I need to start it ONLY as a developer user, I do not want it to be running all-the-time for everyuser using computer. It was congigured as Network Service logon, I tried Local Service logon, and I even tried configuring it to logon as -my developer user- account, e.g. with limited user name and his password.In every case I can't start the service as member of users group and this developer. Then I added limited user to SQL2005EXPRESS group. Still NO help, won't start either.My question is, If I want to start developing ADO2.NET application and I need to have running SQL2005Express instance as a develper, how can I start it? I think I do not have some rights to masterDB or something. Do it allways need to be running when computer starts? Isn't there any other way, to start it JUST when I think I start developing?I know of user-mode of accessing SQL2005express DBs, but it also assumes that SQL2005Express service is already running, what I am trying to prevent. May 28, 2015We have an application that can spit out our Facility Structure into the following format. However, we have a need to take that data and feed it into another system. However, as you can see it is organized in a PARENT / CHILD structure.
Indent Level Key:

If you notice, each additional row is the child row to its parent above it as long as the Indent Level Key continues to increment. Once we start going back up the structure we essentially have a new Division/Service Line/or Facility depending on how far back we jump on the Indent Level for that next row. Here is some sample data.

Can't Install SQL Server 2005 SP2: Error 29512 - Unable Add User To Local Group
Oct 11, 2007I've noticed at least five other posts on the web with this problem with no solutions given. Seems there are MANY people with this particular problem--hint:Microsoft Pay Attention. Help!
When installing SP2 for SQL Server 2005 I get this error message:
MSI (s) (E0!68) [09:02:25:673]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29512. SQL Server Setup was unable add user OUR-LAN-DOMAINOUR-SERVICE-ACCOUNT to local group OUR-LAN-DOMAINSQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$OUR-DATABASE-SERVER-NAME$MSSQLSERVER.
The error message seems to contradict itself: it says "local group" which seems to me to mean the group on the database server itself YET the group name is prefixed with our LAN domain name. So which one is it?
Also, I'm not sure if this message means there is a problem in Active Directory or in the security model of SQL Server itself. I don't think it means SQL Server itself because I don't think SQL Server has groups... it only has Roles, right?
We looked in Active Directory and the user above does indeed exist in the domain-level group mentioned.
Please help!

User Access Throguh A Report Server
Jun 29, 2007Can someone provide me some hints or useful links on user access throguh a report server? Here is the situation:
MachineA: (My Machine) running Windows XP professional with full SQL Server 2005 installed
MachineB: running Windows 2003 Server with full SQL Server 2005 installed
MachineC: a user machine running Windows XP professional .
All the machines are connected within the same LAN.
I created a report - on MachineA with a data source called 'DataSource1' that points to an analysis database located in MachineB. I deployed the report to the reporting service on MachineA. I have no problem to view the report on my web browser on MachineA through http://localhost/reportserver. Now I let a user to view the report on on MachineC through http://MachineA/reportserver. She can see my report. However, when she clicks the report, she got the following error:
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
Cannot create a connection to data source 'DataSource1'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection)

I tried many ways to fix the problem, and got no solution. She sees my report so she can access my report server. She has enough access right to the analysis database and cubes and dimensions. She can use her Management Studio to connect to it and browse the cube. She just can not open 'DataSource1'. I would really appreciate if someone can share some knowledge or recommend me some useful resources that explains the access/security control via Web Service -> Report Server -> Analysis Cubes. There are so many places to configure the access/security: IIS, Report Manager (Roles), the OLTP server that hosts Report Server databases (ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB), and the Analysis database (also called roles). I really get confused: how do they work together?

I have several reports for users to view on our Intranet. After installation of SQL 2005 SP2 patch, I cannot delete user or user's authority from Report in Properties Tab. An error message was shown on the status bar. It indicated that JavaScript Error: 'Return' statement outside of function. Seems something wrong with the 'Delete' funciton in SQL 2005 after update. The other functions worked fine. Could you point me out how to fix it or need to install any updates / hotfix. Thanks a lot!

User Unable To Save/Open Report In Report Builder

I have environment that use SSRS 2005 ad hoc reporting.
One of the users (out of 200) is unable to open or save reports in the report builder.
the user succeed to open the report builder, when he try to save report that he build from shema he get error. as well when he try to open an existing report that build in the report builder he also get an error,

On Save the error is:

Please note that I succeed with second user to create ad hoc report on the first user
computer. I also failed to with the first user to create ad hoc on another computer.

For example, executing a DTSX stored in a server, execution is fine and successfully but the log file attached to that DTSX is not created at all after the execution. Otherwise if I'm going to execute from the server everything is fine: log file is created and gathering the usual information.
Let me know if exists any option for to enable this from the own DTSX.
If I run local packages log files are created without problems.

I have to create a DSN for SQL-Server. Therefor I use the function "SQLConfigDataSource" from "ODBCCP32.DLL". But the problem is that the SQL-Server does not use the Standard-Portnumber 1433. I've tried to make the DSN with "SERVERNAME xxxx" where xxxx is the Portnumber, sometimes it works, but often it does not. When it does not work, then the Checkbox in the ODBC-Configuration-Tool is checked, so the connection is searching for the standard-port. How can I tell the system that it shall NOT use dynamic configuration?

GROUP BY Highest Score Per User

I've got a SPROC that generates a recordset of user vote tallies (they're calculated in a separated SPROC). The user submissions are grouped by a GUID value so as to remain unique for a user's submission (each user can have multiple submissions.
The problem is that the recordset returned displays ALL the users, and I'd like to only select the highest score for each user. So, if I have 500 submissions from 3 users (User1 and User2 submit once each and User3 submits 497 times), the total recordset will have 3 rows - being the highest score per user, discounting the others.
Here's my base query:
SELECT a.UserID,a.Name AS [Name],SUM(b.TotalTally) AS [TotalPoints]
FROM Users a
INNER JOIN Ballots b ON a.UserID = b.UserID
GROUP BY a.UserID, a.Name,b.SubmissionGUID
ORDER BY [TotalPoints] DESC,[Name] ASC
...and I've been able to get the highest vote per user, discounting duplicate entries, by using this:
SELECT a.UserID,MAX(b.TotalTally) AS [TotalPoints]
FROM Users a

How can I write combine the two in a nested subquery to display only the top score per user?
