Transport Level Error Returned When Trying To Shrink A Data File Using DBCCSHRINKFILE ('DB', Size)

Nov 30, 2007

Greetings:

I have a database that is 1.7terabyte in size with 136gb free and throws a "transport level error" telling me to discard the results when I run dbccshrinkfile ('DBNAME', size). I have tried various increments of size, from truncateonly to 1MB below its current value, and nothing works. I have tried to detach and reattach the db, restart the service, restart the server, and none have provided a solution. Any ideas?

Derek

SQL 2012 :: SSIS Automatic Pause And Manual Restart Options

Jun 25, 2014

As part of an ETL process which takes several days I need to build in an auto pause on processing with no set time for restarting it again. So we cannot use the script..WAITFOR DELAY '00:01:00'

Apparently the Loop is not an option as it uses too much CPU.We need to run a few manual checks and there is no way to determine the amount of time needed. After these check are done I need some way of resuming the package from where it stopped.

The obvious way probably is to build this into two separate packages but this would break the logical way our containers are being setup, in other words, it would make us break a container into two different parts in different packages.

Date Time Format Options When Writing To A Flat File

Apr 24, 2006

We are using an ADO.NET provider in SSIS to read data from a SQL Server 2000 table that contains DateTime columns to write to a Flat File Destination. When the date values are written to the file they are formatted in TimeStamp to the 10th decimal position; e.g.€œ2006-04-24 12:00:00.123000000€?. Since SQL Server supports values to Timestamp(3), we need to truncate the last seven zeros to put the data in this format €œ2006-04-24 12:00:00.123€? to keep the file as small as possible.

Since we have several hundred DateTime columns in scope for our requirements we are looking for the least logic/effort to accomplish this task. We can do this via Data Conversion and Derived Column transformations to cast the dates and strings but it is very labor intensive. It would be something like singing 99 bottles of beer on the wall eight times in a row with each verse taking 3 minutes each. Yikes.

We have tried casting the DateTime columns to varchar in the SELECT statement but receive this format €œApr 24 2006 12:22PM€?.

Is there a configuration we've missed that forces timestamp(10) with non significant digits?

A Transport-level Error Has Occurred When Receiving Results From The Server. - After Installing New Instance Of SQL Server 2005 W/NO App Changes

Sep 27, 2006

We've devoted a resource to this today, but I have to believe it's something easy that we're overlooking.  The scneario is that we have a production Web application that until last weekend had a SQL 2000 back end.  This weekend we installed a new instance of SQL 2005 and everything works (we tested in a sandbox environment, but someone must not have load tested enough) and never saw these exceptions.   So, after the upgrade we now receive 100's of thexe SQL excptions per day:A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)Does anyone know what we've overlooked that's causing this issue? Thanks for any help!

A Transport-level Error Has Occurred... When Linking A Server.

Apr 9, 2007

I just installed Microsoft SQL Server Express SP2. I setup a linked server to an Oracle database using the followings commands:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'Oracle_DEV', 'Oracle', 'MSDAORA', 'DEV'

EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Oracle_DEV ', false, NULL, 'oracledbuser', 'dbuserpassword'

When I try and query the linked database I get the following error message:

Msg 109, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - The pipe has been ended.)

I've been searching the web and have gotten a lot of hits on the error message but have yet to uncover anything specifically related to linked servers or anything closely related enough to help me resolve this problem. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

SQL Server 2008 :: SSIS Copy File From SharePoint Library Using File System Task Permissions?

Jun 19, 2015

Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.

Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.

I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.

Failure Sending Mail: The Transport Lost Its Connection To The Server

May 12, 2006

More and more often, I am seeing this error message in RS subscriptions. I would assume it means the IIS server can't connect to the corporate exchange server. However I was wondering if there is some timeout setting/configuration in RS or the IIS server (or any other kind of setting) I can change to help alleviate this problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or know how to fix it?

Thanks,

Jeff

UPDATE: After looking closer at the subscriptions, I have noticed that subscriptions set up by a RS Admin (who is also a server admin) seem to be working fine. It is the subscriptions that are set up by ordinary users that are failing...

A Transport-level Error Has Occurred When Sending The Request To The Server

Apr 7, 2006

Hi all,

I am new to SQL 2005. I have one issue and it is as follows:

I write a simple query and run it; it works fine.

Now I break the network connection and run the query; in this case it runs fine.

But when I reconnect the network and run the query, then I get an error as follows:

"A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - An unexpected network error occurred.) "

Every thing is local here. So how the network issue comes here?

A Transport-level Error Has Occurred When Receiving Results From The Server

Nov 27, 2006

Hi all,

I
am trying to run a stored procedure which retreives 3 lakhs of records
and updates the data and moves few of those records to some tables.
Since the number of records are more , the time taken for the storede
procedure is around 30 minutes when i directly execute it in query
analyzer.

But I need to execute it from Visula Studio.Net 2005
(c#). Whole of the application contains only one form with a single
button. When I click on the button , this stored procure has to be
executed. But I am getting an error as shown below.
"A
transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the
server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name
is no longer available.)"

Database used is SqlServer 2000

How to solve this error?. Any ideas are really appreciated.

A Transport-level Error Has Occurred When Sending The Request To The Server

Oct 16, 2006

I've tried to search on the web for a solution for this error but i didn't find any working solutions for this problem. We have 2 servers. The first one is the server we use to develop our ASP.NET 2 application. On this server we don't have this error. On the other server (use by our client) we have this error sometime and i don't know why. Both servers have the same configuration and both application have the same web.config file.

I've tried to add a try-catch and retry the query when the error occured. This seems to be working but we don't want to have to change all our connections and since we don't have this problem on the other server we want to find the source of the problem.

Any idea ?

Thanks !

How (un)secure Is My Remote SQL Server?

Apr 10, 2007

I've been provided with a server at a hosting company. The server is running W2K3 SP2 in its own workgroup (i.e., non-AD) configuration, but is not behind any type of hardware firewall; there is no VPN in place, either. I connect to the server via RDP using an extremely long and complex password. I'm using the newest version of the RDP client. The article "Hacking RDP" and the ensuing reader comments (http://mcpmag.com/columns/article.asp?EditorialsID=1699) indicate that using RDP in this fashion is relatively safe.

I installed SQL Server 2005 SP2 on this server. I set server authentication to 'SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode'. I created one obscure SQL Server login, using another extremely long and complex password. I also disabled the login for the 'sa' account.

Since installing SQL Server on this server, I've noticed thousands of Failure Audit events in the server's Application log:

Source: MSSQLSERVER

Description: Login failed for user X

where X equals 'administrator', 'root', 'server', 'database' 'sql', 'sa', etc.

These failure events occur almost non-stop, about a dozen per second, and come from a small pool of unknown IP addresses. The IP address seems to change every few hours. I'm guessing that someone is hoping that one of these names is an actual SQL Server login and is trying a brute-force attack to try to stumble upon a matching password. None of these logins are valid, but it's still disconcerting. Is this anything to be concerned about? I could have the hosting company block the IP addresses, but that seems like a losing battle.

Lastly, I used the Surface Area Configuration tool to allow local and remote connections, using TCP/IP only--so that I could begin interacting with this SQL Server from my PC, using both SQL Server Management Studio and my own Visual Studio code. For each method, I'm using the obscure SQL Server login that I created earlier--the one with the extremely long and complex password. How (un)secure is my traffic to/from this SQL Server? I don't believe that my credentials are encrypted, but I'm not sure how much of a risk this is nor do I know how else to more securely connect to SQL Server.

Given these circumstances, is there any way to make this resource more secure? Thanks!

Secure SQL Server + IIS 6.0 Setup - System DSN Problem

Sep 25, 2007

Greetings all,

Please allow me to describe my setup briefly and then I will jump into my problem/questions. I am trying to setup a shared hosting/DB type environment in a secure manner. I have two Windows Server 2003 boxes where Machine 1 is the DB server (MS SQL Server 2005) and Machine 2 is the web server (IIS 6.0). The web server may ultimately have 5-6 different customers (web applications/domains) on it.

In order to keep an exploit/poor code in one customer's application from accessing the files of another, the server is being setup so each website instance runs with a different low-privileged domain account (in Domain Guests). For example, for Website 1, the Directory Security will be setup so it runs with DOMAINIUSR_website1 and for Website 2, the Directory Security will be setup so it runs as DOMAINIUSR_website2. Both of these accounts are in the Domain Guests group and no other groups. This was chosen so that the DB used by each websites on the SQL Server could have read/write permissions granted to the appropriate user. On the web server the SYSTEM DSN is setup to access each database. This way if there is a DB setup with permissions for IUSR_website1 and it gets called by IUSR_website2, access will be denied. If I ran each website instance as the same user, they could in theory still called this DSN and access someone else's database.

Now here is the problem I get. First, the website access works just fine with it setup as the Domain Guest user account. However, when I go to the called the System DSN for DB access I get this error:

---------

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e4d'

[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

/login.asp, line 7

--------

Line 7 of login.asp is as follows:

objConn.Open "DSN=DSN_CTO_SQL"

--------

So it appears there is something that is failing here. For troubleshooting purposes I have taken that IUSR_website1 account and placed them into the Domain Users group instead of Domain Guests. This fixes the problem. However, it's not the most secure setup to run the web/SQL stuff as a Domain User. Any ideas on why it works fine if the account is in Domain Users but not with Domain Guests? I even went to the registry key for HKLMSoftwareODBC and gave DOMAINIUSER_website1 specific read permissions. This did not fix the problem.

Can anyone make a suggestion or know what the issue is? How are people running secure IIS 6.0 + SQL Server setups for shared environments?

Thanks

Steven

Secure SQL Server Remote Access From ISV Application

May 8, 2007

Hi guys

I'm writing a C# application which connects to a local SQL database for data access. The application connects to SQL Server through windows authentication, but opens up the port and sqlbrowser to others on the network wanting to access the database through SQL Server authentication, and also allows remote users to connect to this server remotely if they have the login and password (and because the port is already open)

I understand this is not secure and open to attack, and am unsure of how to secure these processes without blocking these three types of access, from A.) the local user, B.) the network user and C.) the remote user across the net.

Have researched this a fair bit, but get somewhat lost amongst all the jargon.
