How To : Truncation : Can I Write A Log Entry Whenever Data Is Truncated?

Jul 3, 2006

I'm reading data from a flat file source. If some data gets truncated, i have the option of 'ignoring', 'redirecting' or 'fail component'.

What i'd like to do is, to allow the data to be truncated, but i'd also like to write a log entry so that i can know that a particular rows data has been truncated.

I've tried 'redirecting' the row to a script component (as transformation), but i don't know how to determine if the error is truncation or not, not only that, i can't redirect the row back to the 'original' flow, which is a derived field column.

Any ideas on how to do ?

Cheers.

Data Truncation Does Not Trigger Truncation Error - Why?

Jun 27, 2007

Hi,

I have a data file that has numeric data that looks like:

1.123456

And this column is defined as a DT_NUMERIC(18.6) in the flat file conn mgr.

As an experiment, I changed the destination column to a NUMERIC(18,0) - hoping that this would throw a truncation error at the flat file task level (where I have Truncation on all columns set to "fail component").

Not a peep. It loaded the data into the table, chopping off the 6 digits after the decimal point.

You would THINK that this would cause an error, but no. Why is this? The flat file task complains about all kinds of things, but this is such a gross error, you would think it would catch it!

Thanks

Truncation Of String Data With Data Reader Source Connecting To ODBC DSN

Mar 18, 2007

A data reader is using a connection manager to connect to an ODBC System DSN . A query in the SqlCommand property is provided. Data is being truncated in the only string column . The data type in data reader output-->external columns shows as Unicode string [DT_WSTR] Length 7.

The truncated output in a text file is the first 3 characters from left to right . Changing the column order has no effect.

A linked server was created in SQL Server Management Studio to test the ODBC System DSN using the following:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'server_name',
@srvproduct = '',
@provider = 'MSDASQL',
@datasrc = 'odbc_dsn_name'

Data returned using "OPENQUERY" does not truncate the string column indicating that the ODBC Driver returns data as expected with sql 2005, but not with the Data Reader.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

String Data, Right Truncation

Oct 17, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to execute one huge select statement from my application using ODBC, but I am getting this error:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]String data, right truncation.

the select statement is bigger than 2000 characters, but I don't have any long string column, just strings and numbers. How can I work around this?

Is there any max size? Because if I use less than 1000 characters, it works fine.

I am using Centura/SqlWindows, Native Sql Server ODBC and SqlServer 2005. unfortunately, I can not use Ole from my application.

String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated. I Get This Error When Entering Data Using Sql Server Management Studio Express.

String or binary data would be truncated. I get this error when entering data using sql server management studio express.

I am not running a sql to insert or update the table. This is through the EDI.

The data type is varchar(100). I enter one character and it errors on me. So this isn't a string being too long problem.

Any ideas?

SqlServer 2005 String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated When Data Is OK

Feb 21, 2006

When using AquaData or JDBC (inet tds driver), when doing an insert using SqlServer 2005, I get error "String or binary data would be truncated" when the data is actually OK. There are no triggers, etc. that would confuse the situation. It works fine in SqlServer 2000.

The scenario is as follows:

Create table:
create table test3 (
name varchar (18) ,
tbname varchar (18)
)

Create and populate table:
create table maxtable (
tablename varchar (18) not null,
[...]
)

Try to insert into test3:
insert into test3 (name, tbname)
select i.name, o.name
from dbo.sysindexes i, sysobjects o, maxtable m
where i.indid > 0 and i.indid < 255
and i.id = o.id and i.indid = 1
and o.name = lower(m.tablename)

And I get the error "String or binary data would be truncated." The values being selected for i.name and o.name have maximum length of 18. There are other rows in sysindexes and sysobjects with longer values, but they are not being selected.

The error does not occur with SQL Server Management Studio, and does not occur using SqlServer 2000.

MsSQL Image Data Type Truncation

Mar 4, 2004

Hello, I am trying to store pictures in an Image data type column of my MsSQL table from PHP, or even SQL Query Analyzer for that matter. In PHP I use the bin2hex() function to get the HEX equivilent of the picture, I'm sure everyone knows that when you convert a Binary file to HEX, the file size is doubled. When I try to insert the HEX file into my table with a query like:
INSERT INTO PicTable (fileType, fileData) VALUES ('jpg', 0x47494638396164014100f70000000000ffffff2f2f2fe800020c0c0ce....)

MsSQL will store EXACTLY HALF of the file. The byte count of the stored HEX data and original Binary data is exactly the same, so when I try to extract the file and display it, in a browser window for instance, I can see exactly half of the image. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this, but I am at a loss. Does anyone know of anything that would cause this strange behavior. I have no problems at all doing this with MySQL's BLOB data type. Thanks in advance for any help.

Data Import / Truncation - Very Long Field

Dec 7, 2007

Hi,

I am having issues importing data from a text file into a SQL database table using the import wizard in SQL Server 2005.

The text file contains polygon coordinates and a polygon name and looks like this:

"42.2342342,-121.1351398|42.3467984752,-122.2349234, ... ..., 42.1897498174,-122.131983","Polygon Name 1"

"42.2342342,-121.1351398|42.3467984752,-122.2349234, ... ..., 42.1897498174,-122.131983","Polygon Name 2"

and the SQL table looks like this:

polycoordinates varbinary(MAX)
polygonname varchar(50)

The length of the longest polygon coordinates record is about 115,000 characters. I believe the varbinary(MAX) type should hold that data, but SQL throws a truncation error every time I try to import the data.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jay

Incorrect Truncation Warning In Data Flow

Feb 5, 2008

All,

I'm getting a strange truncation warning in a data flow, similar to what is posted here:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2629939&SiteID=1

In my case, I have a column in a pipeline that is DT_STR with a length of 20. I'm trying to insert data from the data flow into a table (via an OLEDB destination) in which the destination column is varchar(50). When I review the metadata throughout the data flow, everything looks correct. However, I get a truncation warning stating that data loss might occur when inserting data into the string column of length 20 from a source column of length 50. Thus, it looks like the data flow is swapping the metadata for the source and destination columns when validating the data flow (and thus, producting the warning).

This is a pretty complex data flow, so I'd rather not have to rebuild it. And changing the metadata of the source column to be DT_STR with a length of 50 is going to wreak minor havoc in the data flow (as lots of things use that column).

Has anyone seen anything similar to this? The post referenced above deals with a package that is constructed programmatically, but the package I'm working with was created the old fashioned way...

Any help would be appreciated.

Bulk Insert Data Conversion Error (truncation)

Dec 4, 2006

hi

"Bulk insert data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 1 (id)."

when you get the error above or similar in sql server 2000 does it continue inserting the data by truncating it or does it stop beacause looking at the data that i have got it seems to continue inserting the data but just truncates the colunm. i have tried it several time its seeems to be consistent.

I have data that has white spaces after the actual data e.g. '00093 ' hence i am happy aslong as i can be sure that it does always continue as i will be loading alot of data using a similar process.

hence my question is that will it load all the data all the time and just truncate it to fit the column size?

SQL Server 2012 :: Bulk Load Data Conversion Error (truncation)

May 15, 2014

Is there a switch I can use to force a bulk insert and if data is truncated, I'm good with that. The truncated data, in this case, is not data I can use anyway if it is long enough to be truncated.

I need to keep the field at VARCHAR(23) and if I expand it, I won't be able to join on it after the file load completes. I'd like the data to be inserted (truncated if need be) and then I'll deal with the records that are truncated after I load the file.

Preventing Overlapping Data Entry

Apr 17, 2007

Hello Everyone,
I have a web form that allows the user to select a time to reserve.  I am trying to make it so that when a user selects a date to schedule something (which i have working) a drop down list will fill with times that have not been reserved.
The data is stored in two tables: tblCalendar and tblTime.  tblTime contains pkTimeID and times (which are all possible times to select from in half hour intervals). tblCalendar contains a few fields but timeID and date (which is in the format M/d/yyyy) are what I need to test against.  timeID is the foreign key of pkTimeID.
Basically when the user selects the date, a function gets called that will run a SELECT statement to get the times available.  All of this works, I am able to fill the ddl with all times available no matter what the date is or what has already been reserved.  I want to check if a time has been already selected based on the date selected by the user and only allow times not selected to be listed.
After acheiving this I would like to prevent the immediate time before and immediate time after from being displayed because each reserved time will last for one hour but the data is stored in half hour increments.
Any help/suggestions/links will be greatly appreciated.  If I need to provide anything else please let me know.
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Easy Data Entry In SQL Server

Jan 22, 2006

Hi all,

I have been using SQL Server 2K for a couple of months now and I have been entering data into my tables through Enterprise Manager. I do this by selecting the table, right-clicking on it, and selecting Return All Rows.

After months of use, this method of entering data has become tedious and cumbersome. Is there an easier way to enter data into SQL Server? I don't know how to program Visual Basic, but I know how to create dynamic websites.

Microsoft Access offers the ability to make Forms, so that data entry is easier. Can SQL Server offer anything similar? Maybe SQL Server 2005 offers a GUI for data entry?

Cheers for your help!

Is It Possible To Manage Data Entry And Updates T

Jul 22, 2007

Hi Guys,

I'm using Visual Basic 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I have textboxes on a VB form linked to 2 database tables.

I am wondering if it is possible to use just ONE BindingNavigator to manage data entry and updates to THE database tables. I initially thought I could manage the tables but have I encountered some problems:

i)When I entered a new record, and clicked on the SAVE BUTTON the new record the textboxes for the 1st table saves the record to the database, but the textboxes for 2nd table still retained data in them and are not saving theirs to the database.

ii) The same textboxes for the 2nd table are NOT allowing for updates too! Or, could it simply be that it is not possible to use this method for data entry and updates?

Thanks you.

Duplicate data might arrive at your database via an interface to another system
Data is loaded into table from other sources because during data loads, the integrity constraints are disabled
Merging data from disparate systems
Inheriting a poorly designed databaseBut is there any other ways also present????? Please tell me???

Only I haven't used it much since, and need to seriously develop something now, that I bothered to ask the question here.

Some examples of the values I tried entering yesterday, and none of them worked. (I got the same error message for each value) -

1-1-2007

01-01-2007

01/01/2007

01,01,2007

01:01:2007

Jan 01, 2007 (this is the format I have specified for short date in the Win regional settings - MMM dd, yyyy)

I even tried entering time alongside with all those above figures in the format -

11:35 PM

11:35 AM

23:35

The only time value(s) I didn't try was/were - hh:mms tt - which is the time format specified in my Win regional settings, neither standalone, nor with the date values.

I also tried entering a time value standalone, without the date. Still no go.

(Also, as I have gleaned from previous posts, if all goes well and SQL Server accepts your data, then if you enter just a date value in a datetime field, then the field automatically gets populated with the value of the system time at that moment, and if you enter just a standalone time value, then the date part will be filled by the system date value on the date of the entry. Am I correct so far?)

Now I'm in a real fix because of the inability to enter date/time values.

Could you please help me out?

(right click the table, select show table, and the grid view pops up). Ditto for using GUI tools of Visual Studio Express. Is this a bug in the Visual Studio (Express) software?

Also, my other concerns are, once I develop a front-end for data entry using VB, will I face the same issues with data entry in the datetime fields using the GUI of the front end? I can't test that right now, because I'm still learning VB, and cannot create the front end just yet.

Alright, I have done a complete reinstall of Win XP, and have also reinstalled SQL Server Express. Prior to this, I had SQLExpress SP1, but now I have directly installed SP2.

Now I continue to face the same issue. SQL Server will not accept any value for any datetime field, unless it is entered as an SQL insert statement. It won't accept the value entered in the exact same format as the insert statement from the GUI mode of Management Studio Express, nor will it take any values from any GUI developed using VBExpress and the fill dataset method. It throws an error everytime. I don't know any other way of databinding and updating/inserting using VB at this time.

I am at my wits' end because of this. I ask again, is this a bug in SQL Server Express? If so how do I report it to MS and get my issue resolved? If not, even then how can I solve this problem?

Could someone please help me out? I am stuck and cannot use the product at all, without the datetime field.

Ordering Data By Entry Rather Than Column

Apr 16, 2008

In my search results I need to order my data by a particular entry rather than a particular column and then add all the other entries onto the end of the result set. Specifically I'm trying to order my records by a particular location in a city so those entries in that location appear first in the result set and then on the end I want to include all the other locations in that city.

I'm assuming I'll need to do these as separate queries and then use a UNION statement but I'm wondering if there is a better or easier way. Is there, for example, another type of ORDER BY clause that lets me order by a particular entry rather than a column?

Thanks
