How To Update Hard Coded Database References In Stored Procedures ?

Feb 6, 2008

Hi There,

Our company deals with financial education and typically has 9 different databases which have some cross referenced stored procedures. Every time we replicate Production database into TEST and DEV environments, we had to manually update the database references in Stored procedures. and it usually takes atleast a week and until then all the dev and test work has to wait.

Hence, I wanted to write a script, Here the code below.

-- These two variables must contain a valid database name.
DECLARE @vchSearch VarChar(15),
@vchReplacement VarChar(15)

SET @vchSearch = 'Search'
SET @vchReplacement = 'Replacement'
/*
-- Select the Kaplan Database Names in the Current Server
*/

DECLARE @tblDBNames TABLE (vchDBName VarChar(30))
INSERT INTO
@tblDBNames
SELECT
Name
FROM
MASTER.DBO.SYSDATABASES
WHERE
Has_DBAccess(Name)=1
And Name IN ( 'DB_DEV', 'DB_TEST', 'DB_PROD', 'WEBDB_DEV', 'WEBDB_TEST', 'WEBDB_PROD' , 'FINDB_DEV', 'FINDB_TEST', 'FINDB_PROD')

--SELECT * FROM @DBNames

IF @vchSearch NOT IN (SELECT vchDBName FROM @tblDBNames)
BEGIN
PRINT 'Not a Valid Search DB Name'
GOTO Terminate
END
IF @vchReplacement NOT IN (SELECT vchDBNAME FROM @tblDBNames)
BEGIN
PRINT 'Not a Valid Replacement DB Name'
GOTO Terminate
END

-- We have Valid DB Names, lets proceed...
--USE @vchReplacement

SET @vchSearch = '%' + @vchSearch + '..%'
SET @vchReplacement = '%' + @vchReplacement + '..%'

-- Get Names of Stored Procedures to be altered
DECLARE @tblSProcNames TABLE (vchSPName VarChar(100))

INSERT INTO
@tblSProcNames
SELECT
DISTINCT so.Name
FROM
SYSOBJECTS so
INNER JOIN SYSCOMMENTS sc
ON sc.Id = so.Id
WHERE
so.XType='P'
AND sc.Text LIKE @vchSearch
ORDER BY
so.name

-- Now, the table @tblSprocNames has the names of stored procedures to be updated.
-- And we have to Some HOW ?!! grab the stored proc definition and use REPLACE() to
-- update the database reference
-- Then, use cursors to loop through each stored proc and upate the reference

Now, I have got stuck how to extract the body of a stored procedure into a variable.

Please Help.... I dont want spend weeks of time in the future to do this work manually.

Working With A Hard Coded Primary Key

Feb 24, 2004

Hi there,

The postage and packing scheme being used at the site I'm working on depends on the customer's location.

If they're in the UK they get once scheme and if they're in Ireland they get another. Furthermore, if they're anywhere else they get another scheme.

A customer's country is indicated by a 'countryID' stored in the main customer row in the database. (This ID references a country in the Countries table.)

Thus, I was wondering if it is acceptable to hard code the country pk of the UK and Ireland into the formular which works out the postage and packing?

At present, for a similar issue, I've even hard coded the the pk of UK and Ireland into some Javascript running at the client.

Is it fair design to work with a hard coded pk like this?

Cheers,

Using Variables Instead Of Hard Coded Values

Dec 12, 2001

I thought a stored procedure was taking much too long to complete. So, I moved the main query to Query Analyzer and found that when I substituted actual values for variables that my SELECT statement ran in seconds. Just to test, I created DECLARE statements, set the variables equal to the same values, re-ran the SELECT statement and it took over a minute. Even the Execution Plan was much different. Any suggestions?

Sa Account And Hard Coded Application

Mar 27, 2001

Hello I was hoping somebody out there could help me …..

We have a hard-coded application which uses the Sa account with no password. We want to add password to Sa – but when we do get users/DBAs calling us saying the application does not work.

How can we add password to Sa and get the application to work - unfortunately we do not have scripts for the application or know of the whereabouts of the developers.

Any suggestions/ideas – will be greatly appreciated

Query Performance Hard Coded Value Versus Table Driven

Nov 6, 2014

I want to be able to return the rows from a table that have been updated since a specific time. My query returns results in less than 1 minute if I hard code the reference timestamp, but it keeps spinning if I load the reference timestamp in a table. See examples below (the "Reference" table has only one row with a value 2014-09-30 00:00:00.000)

select * from A where ReceiptTS > '2014-09-30 00:00:00.000'

select * from A where ReceiptTS > (select ReferenceTS from Reference)

SQL Server 2005 Merge Replication Without A Hard Coded Password

Jan 10, 2007

Hi. I've looked all over MSDN, newsgroups and the web but I can't find the answer to a problem that I am having.

The application that I am working on used both transactional and merge replication. I want to avoid hard coding passwords into an application that kicks off the pull replication on the client machine.

The client machines are all using SQL Server 2005 Express. The other machine is running SQL Server Standard. The passwords and login details are specified in the subscription properties in the Management Studio.

A fragment of the code is posted below. The transactional sychronization works fine without having to specify any passwords - however the merge replication does not work if both of the passwords are not specified.

private void SynchButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Set up the subscriber connection details. subscriberConnection = new ServerConnection(subscriberName); try { // Connect to the Subscriber. subscriberConnection.Connect(); // Do the transactional subscription synchronisation independantly of the // merge subscription replication. try { transPullSubscription = new TransPullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, transPublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (transPullSubscription.LoadProperties() && transPullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { TransSynchronizationAgent transSyncAgent = transPullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; transSyncAgent.Synchronize(); } else { } } catch (Exception ex) { } // Do the merge subscription synchronisation independantly of the // transactional subscription replication. try { // Set up the subscription details for the merge subscription (bi-directional data) mergePullSubscription = new MergePullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, mergePublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (mergePullSubscription.LoadProperties() && mergePullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { MergeSynchronizationAgent mergeSyncAgent = mergePullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; mergeSyncAgent.DistributorPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.PublisherPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.Synchronize(); }etc etc..

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appeciated. Thanks.

Insert Data Into A Table From Two Tables Into A Single Table Along With A Hard Coded Value?

Feb 9, 2012

I'm trying to insert data into a table from two tables into a single table along with a hard coded value.

insert into TABLE1

VALUES
((select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where
AUTHOR IN (select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where USER_ID
=('USER1'))),(select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where USER_ID

I get the following-

Msg 512, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

The statement has been terminated.

Do I need to use a cursor?

My question is: a S.P. can update a SQL Server table, but can a S.P. 'run' a shared VB file to redicret
a web page automatically? How?

Writing Insert And Update Stored Procedures For Normalized Schemas?

May 25, 2006

I have a database schema that has an Address table used to store addresses for different entities such as Customers and Employees. I want to reuse the same Address record between different Customers and Employees without duplicating any address information. I'm not sure what the best approach might be.

Should have I have seperate stored procedures on the Address table that update and insert new addresses, where each Address record remains immutable once created? (So the update stored procedure actually creates a new Address record if the data changes). These stored procedures would then be invoked by business logic and used in tandem with stored procedures that act on Customers and Employees to ensure that no address records are duplicated.

Or should I create a view on a Customer joined with Address, and similarily with Employee and Address, and have stored procedures that act on these views and ensure that no Address records are duplicated. Should I use instead of triggers to override the behavior of insert and update on the view to achieve these?

I'm rather lost as to what direction I should take. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Cross-database References

Oct 22, 2007

Hi,
I'm doing a web application that will get some information from an ERP.
At this moment I have 2 databases:
1) The aspnetdb, where I have the tables for Merbership and Role
2) The ERP database
I need to put my web application tables on one of these two DB's. This tables will reference the users from the membership and some products from the ERP DB.
I will store products requests that will store both UserID (from aspnetdb) and ProductID (from ERP DB). I'm thinking to put these tables on the aspnetdb, so that all web application tables stick together. But, I will loose tha ability to make joins with the ERP database, right?
Do you think this will work? Can someone make some comments about this situation, and give me some tips?
Thank you!

Database Stored Procedures Not Showing Up In Database View

Jan 31, 2008

Hi I have an application that I have started to develop.  I have successfully set the connection to open the SQL Server database that I created.  When I first started on the program, I was able to create Table Adapters by dragging the tables or stored procedures onto the DataSet work surface and going through the configuration process.  At one point, however, I stopped being able to see any of my stored procedures in the database view although they are there because when I go to create a new table adapter, I am able to right click and add the new adapter and find the stored procedure in the wizard. Is there any way I can reset this so that my stored procedures are visible again.  I have tried refreshing to no avail - and I think this is creating problems in other parts of the application.Any help appreciate.Roger

Trigger: To Fill Another Database With Using Stored Procedures Of The Other Database

Apr 24, 2007

Hello everyone,I face currently a problem where I could need some input for searchingthe source of the ProblemSystem: SQL Server 9.0I fill from Database A with triggers Database B, everything worksfine. On Database B there is a Stored Procedures that checks the records andadd additional information accordingly, this Stored Procedures isnormally called by the application on "update and insert" in theaccording table. When I try to call this Stored Procedures from the Database A, thetrigger does not work anymore, even if I do a try catch over the wholetrigger, he never reach the Catch and the insert I try to do there toget the error message. On both Databases the user, that is taken to execute the trigger isexistent and DB-Owner of both Databases. If I go and execute the Stored Procedures manually after an insert orupdate to Database B everything works fine.I also already tried to check on Database B if there is an insert orupdate from Database A and if, to execute the Stored Procedures, withthe same result, nothing and all happens anymore, neither update onDatabase A and also not on Database B.And also I cant catch the error as the Try/Catch is not working.Hope I could explain it understandable and maybe someone remembersalready having the same problem. Thanks & Best regardsPascal

Exporting Stored Procedures In Sql 2005 From Database To Database?

Apr 14, 2008

I've never dealt with stored procedures much.. but i have a new database
created.. imported the tables, but the stored procedures didnt get copied
over..

Is there an easy way to export them.. perhaps to a .sql file ... then import
them or run a script on the other database..

I have never done much with the query window before, so i'm not sure how to
handle this.. as there are around 20 stored procedures that need imported..

Thanks for any tips...

Assessment Of Database Stored Procedures

Apr 24, 2007

I am attempting to compile a list of questions that will enable meassess 'at risk' stored procedures that need to be remediated in orderto minimize unplanned downtime and enhance database performance. Isthere a subset of criteria (parameters) from the MS SQL Server BestPractices Analyzer that can be used for this purpose? Any pointers tothe appropriate documentation is most welcome. Thanks in advance.
