1 sql standard .(shortcut right click from cd/dvd not possible) I have heard command prompt start menu, click cmd
type run D: cd/dvd exe
From a wizard (sql sp2)

2. sql standard sp2
a. upgrade using a wizard
b. open a command prompt (not sure if right click is best option)
install dvd media example dqlserver2005sp2-kb921896-exe SKUUPGRADE=1(is run as administrator option on media)
do I type run or what do I type ?
c. go to system configuration page(where is this) you should see a single warnining you need to install
sp2, the edition should say success if it does not please reapply
d. on the registration page please enter your registeration number
e. on the comments to install please enter database services, reporting services
workstation components, books online and development tools( I wish to install
all components)

f. on the instance page click default instance(default install)
g. finish rest of wizard
h. apply sql sp2

I also have of seperate question of upgrading sql from vista using a Configuring local admin account
account (configuring administration from a wizard-will this notify
me by default) I do not want my administrative priviledges elevated.
I will be using default configurations for my installations.........
I often wish there would a nice picture examples of doing this

How Many CALs ?

Nov 15, 2000

Hello everyone,

I have live application in Greece with 300 users. VB5 with SQL Server 6.5
SP5a. The system is being totally upgrade to use SQL Server 7, the
application has also been upgraded.

The client therefore has 300 CALs for SQL Server 6.5.

If SQL Server 7 is being installed, do the clients need to purchase another
300 CALs for SQL Server 7, or do the existing CALs allow for access to SQL
Server 7. (i.e are they transferable). In what blocks can these be purchased
in, can you provide a website URL for reference.

An urgent response to this would be appreciated as I have technical people
(not DBAs, nor am I a DBA !) on site.

regards

Device CALs

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,I am slightly confused about the meaning of a 'device cal'(specifically for sql server but I guess the same applies to other mslicences)In the examples about device cals, there is a picture of a number ofwindows desktops connected to a database server. each desktop canpotentially be used by a number of users and requires one device cal.All well and good. Now, say I have a web application hosted hosted on a different machineand connecting to SQL server. the SQL server licencing FAQ says"A device CAL covers multiple users' access to server software from asingle, shared device."is my web server a shared device? so does the web server require asingle device CAL no matter how many users use it?Andy

SQL 2000 CALs

May 14, 2007

Hi All,

My company has Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition installed. I am wondering if we need additional SQL CALs (besides the SBS CALs) for the SQL 2000 that is installed with SBS 2003 Premium Edition.

Thanks in advance for all your feedbacks.

SQL 2000 Licensing With CALs

Dec 20, 2006

Hi,

I didn't find any other forum to ask this and I didn't find any matching post for my question, so I post it here:

We have an application that is running on 2 web servers connected to a sql2000 server with a 2-processor license ... so I think there we have no problem no matter how many users are using our web application.

But the web application is producing a huge amount of logs that we want to analyze on a distinct multi-proc sql2000 server with a huge amount of harddisk space that's running with CAL licensing (not really sure how many we have for that server).

In a perfect solution we will provide access to the logs via our 2 web servers using the same application, but only for a given number of users (the number of users we hav CALs for). I think using that approach we get into licensing trouble.

Would it be ok to start a second web site on the same servers with an IP restriction allowing only "n" predefined IP endpoints so that only these machines can access the sql-Server that is running in CAL mode?

I'm not really sure what the CAL model really wants to allow - "n" physical users (persons), "n" end user computers, "n" database connections, max "n" of all together and is it concurrent, in a time of one day, the lifetime of the server? Maybe there's a document with some real world examples that I didn't find.

CU,

Sven

SQL Server Standard 2005, SQL Mobile 2005 Data Encryption Issues

Jul 26, 2007

Hi,

I have a central database server that is runnning on SQL 2005 standard edition and Windows server 2003 standard as OS.

I realise that I can use SQL statements to encrypt and decrypt the data inside the standard SQL.

However, how do I read and write the data via an web application coded in C#.net and is also running on the same machine?

Another issue is, I need to replicate some of the data in this SQL standard over to a SQL mobile running on a mobile device running on Windows CE 5.0.

The mobile device also needs to read and write data to the encrypted data via a C#.net application.

Question is, with all these requirements to be met, can I use AES? I know that AES is not available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2000 and I cant find AES in the .net compact framework.

how do i go about ensuring security? how do I ensure that the symmetric key is the same both on the SQL standard and SQL mobile?

thank you.

Problems Upgrading Database Engine 2005 Express To 2005 Standard

Nov 7, 2006

I'm having problems upgrading the SQL express 2005 database engine services to 2005 standard 32 bit. I've also tried to install sql 2005 service pack 1 "SQLServer2005SP1-KB913090-x86-ENU.exe" and it did the same thing, upgraded everything except the database engine services. After that I tried another install from the run command "Z:Setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1" and that failed at the same place as well.

My windows version is is 5.2 (build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447:service pack 1

Below is a copy of the error log file from the install, any help would be greatly appreciated.

How Are Device Cals Managed And Assigned.

Aug 21, 2007

Hello all,

This seems like a simple question but I still haven't been able to get an answer from Microsoft Canada. We're looking at buying 75 device cals to connect to a single instance of SQL Server Standard Edition. Our question is on how those licenses are assigned and/or activated.

Do we need to manually do something for each station or is it an automated process done the first time a station connects to the server? We also wat to understand what happens when a workstation dies and is replaced by another one. Do you have to do something on the server to transfer the license to the new station ?

In other words, when using device cals (and/or user cals), do you have to do any type of license management or is it all transparent ?

Upgrade From SQL Express 2005 Report Server With Advanced Services To SQL 2005 Standard Fails

Feb 25, 2008

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:

SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.

After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.

I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

SQL Server 2005 Express And Visual Studio 2005 Standard

Jul 9, 2006

Hi everyone,I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services from Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition.  I have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but it took up so much space and resources on my computer that I didn't want to put it back on there.  So I put the SQL Express on there and while the Management Studio application connects just fine, VS 2005 will not.  Oddly enough, VS 2005 connected just fine to SQL 2005 Standard.  I have enabled shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP.  I have set up SQL Express to accept remote connections on named pipes and TCP/IP.  And I have tried running SQL Express as the Local System Account, as a Local Service and as a Network Service.  Nothing.  I have tried feeding the Server Name is the Data Connections dialog in Visual Studio my SQL Express instance as (local)/SQLEXPRESS, localhost/SQLEXPRESS, and {computername}/SQLEXPRESS where {computername} is the name of my local computer which SQL Express is (allegedly) running on.  And I cannot get the list of databases on that server. There is probably something very simple that I have left out.  Can anyone see what it is?Thanks!

Expired SQL 2005 Evaluation Upgrade To SQL 2005 Standard

Mar 12, 2008

I've been reading and looking over what to do for my situation for several days. I need to ask and see if I can get a clear answer.

My Scenario:
I have a SQL Server 2005 Eval installed that is currently running with live data. I need to upgrade that to a recently-purchased full version. I have several databases set up. I have ready the article 914158 that states it will fail. It's still running so I can access everything. If I restart or stop the service I'm screwed.

That do I do?

Thanks so much!

Database Compatibility Between Sql 2005 Standard V/s Sql 2005 64 Bit

Jul 24, 2006

I am a newbie developing a web site. My local machine has sql 2005 standard edition on it. The host that I am trying to use only has sql 2005 64 bit version.

would I be able to do the use the same database between the two ( i.e. once my site is running at host, would I be able to download the database on my local machine, make changes to my site and then upload again on the hose without any glitches?). In addition, how about sql express doing the same with sql 2005 64 bit.

Thanks a lot for taking time to read the post.

SQL 2005 Standard With 5 CAL

May 31, 2008

Hi,

I currently use SQL 2005 express advanced. I connect to it from approx 20 pc's simultaneously and all works well. Each "client" connects with the same user, therefore I have one user setup within SQL server and then all client pc's connect to the database with the same user and password. This works well.

Owing to the database file size restriction of 4 gig, I now need to purchase full SQL 2005 Standard.

My question is, if I buy SQL 2005 Standard with 5 CAL (client access licences) does that mean that I can no longer connect my 20 client pc's to the server at the same time, even though I am only actually logging in with 1 user only?

Any help is greatly appreciated as I can't seem to get an answer to this question via microsoft at all, and a 20 user licence of full sql 2005 is beyond my budget.

many thanks

2005 Standard And RAM

Dec 13, 2007

After trawling a lot of on-line info I'm still not sure....

With current system configuration of WS2003 (64-bit) Enterprise, 8 GB RAM and SQL2005 (32-bit) Standard can SQL use all available RAM?

From my reading I have found references to SQL2005 (32-bit) Standard can access all RAM available to the OS and other references suggest that only SQL2005 (32-bit) Enterprise can do this...

All help gratefully received....

AWE + SQL 2005 Standard

Mar 13, 2008

I have a 32-bit Windows Server 2003 Enterprise server with 8GB memory. I have enabled the /PAE switch in boot.ini and the server sees all 8GB. have installed SQL 2005 Standard and set the awe-enabled option (including maxmemory setting to 6GB, minmemory to 1GB). The account running SQL has the 'lock pages in memory' option enabled. For some reason SQL doesn't use anywhere near 6GB (seems to sit at 1.7GB). Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
