I am using MS SQL Server Management Studio Express. When I apply multiple insert statement, it doesn't allow me to do so. I have to do it one by one, which is time consuming.

the first select statement for works fine, but the second one and all after i get a syntax error near 'select'.
this is just a shortened version of the statement. how would i run select statements for a table to be inserted into with different column names. also with items that are hard coded like the 'null'. thanks

I have created a trigger that is set off every time a new item has been added to TableA.The trigger then inserts 4 rows into TableB that contains two columns (item, task type).
Each row will have the same item, but with a different task type.ie.
I'm attempting to leverage SQL's new 'APPLY" operator and I guess I don't fully understand it proper usage.
This is a relatively simple request, first i want to count the models produced within a valid period of time. The first 'Cross Apply' gets the valid starting and ending dates and looks ups the number of models produced for the period of time. This section of code works perfectly fine.
The problem appears to be with the second "Cross Apply". What I'm attempting to accomplish is to count all models produced, regardless of time frame.
When executed the query appears to go into an loop and I end up canceling out the request.
Any ideas where I went wrong?? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I’ve never written a query with multiple APPLY joins before and I’m running into some troubles with my first one. The below SQL statement runs within 10 seconds if I comment out either one of the APPLY joins and its corresponding field columns. However, when I try to execute with both APPLY joins, the query runs indefinitely. The longest I’ve waited before cancelling it is 90 minutes.
Now, I know there are probably other ways I could write this query to get me the results I’m looking for. I’m posting this on the board because I’m curious about finding out why multiple APPLY joins could cause SQL Server to run away. I’m hoping to gain some insight so that I can better understand how APPLY joins work so that in case I have a big need to do this again in the future (without suitable workarounds) I can code it correctly.
Here are some things I’ve tried so far…
1.Changed the States table into a subquery that only returns a single state 2.Change all the references inside the APPLY subqueries so that they had different aliases (just in case they were conflicting with each other). 3.Changed the CROSS applies to OUTER applies. States has 50 records and only 32 have matching permit data so the 18 extra iterations using OUTER APPLY don’t impact performance any when an APPLY is used by itself.

My problem is with the WHERE clause... According to page 56, CROSS APPLY returns only rows from the outer table that produces a result set, so why do I need to explicitly filter NULL values?
When I remove the WHERE clause, the query retrieves lots of NULL AvgCost values.
Again, according to page 56, it is the OUTER APPLY that returns all rows that return a result set and will include NULL values in the columns that are returned from the table-valued function.
So, in short, I don't see the difference between CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY, using this example, when I remove the WHERE clause?
(Please refrain from introducing another example into this question.)
I am currently having this problem with gridview and detailview. When I drag either onto the page and set my select statement to pick from one table and then update that data through the gridview (lets say), the update works perfectly. My problem is that the table I am pulling data from is mainly foreign keys. So in order to hide the number values of the foreign keys, I select the string value columns from the tables that contain the primary keys. I then use INNER JOIN in my SELECT so that I only get the data that pertains to the user I am looking to list and edit. I run the "test query" and everything I need shows up as I want it. I then go back to the gridview and change the fields which are foreign keys to templates. When I edit the templates I bind the field that contains the string value of the given foreign key to the template. This works great, because now the user will see string representation instead of the ID numbers that coinside with the string value. So I run my webpage and everything show up as I want it to, all the data is correct and I get no errors. I then click edit (as I have checked the "enable editing" box) and the gridview changes to edit mode. I make my changes and then select "update." When the page refreshes, and the gridview returns, the data is not updated and the original data is shown. I am sorry for so much typing, but I want to be as clear as possible with what I am doing. The only thing I can see being the issue is that when I setup my SELECT and FROM to contain fields from multiple tables, the UPDATE then does not work. When I remove all of my JOIN's and go back to foreign keys and one table the update works again. I've have a need with SQL Server 2005 (so I've no MERGE statement), I have to merge 2 tables, the target table has 10 fields, the first 4 are the clustered index and primary key, the source table has the same fields and index.Since I can't use the MERGE statement (I'm in SQL 2005) I have to make a double step operation, and INSERT and an UPDATE, I can't figure how to design the WHERE condition for the insert statement.
An insert statement was not inserting all the data into a table. Found it very strange as the other fields in the row were inserted. I ran SQL profiler and found that sql statement had all the fields in the insert statement but some of the fields were not inserted. Below is the sql statement which is created dyanmically by a asp.net C# class. The columns which are not inserted are 'totaltax' and 'totalamount' ...while the 'shipto_name' etc...were inserted.there were not errors thrown. The sql from the code cannot be shown here as it is dynamically built referencing C# class files.It works fine on another test database which uses the same dlls. I am currently successfully using the output clause of an insert statement to return the identity values for inserted rows into a table variable
I now need to add an "instead of insert" trigger to the table that is the subject of the insert.
As soon as I add the "instead of insert" trigger, the output clause on the insert statement does not return any data - although the insert completes successfully. As a result I am not able to obtain the identities of the inserted rows
Note that @@identity would return the correct value in the test repro below - but this is not a viable option as the table in question will be merge replicated and @@identity will return the identity value of a replication metadata table rather than the identity of the row inserted into my_table
Note also that in the test repro, the "instead of insert" trigger actually does nothing apart from the default insert, but the real world trigger has additional code.
To run the repro below - select each of the sections below in turn and execute them 1) Create the table 2) Create the trigger 3) Do the insert - note that table variable contains a row with column value zero - it should contain the @@identity value 4) Drop the trigger 5) Re-run the insert from 3) - note that table variable is now correctly populated with the @@identity value in the row

Textbox - Call reference Dropdownmenu - choose Support method Radio button lists - Customer satisfaction questions 1-5 Multiline textbox - other comments. I want to insert textbox, dropdown menu into a db table, then insert each question score into a score column with each question having an ID. I envisage to do this I will need an insert query for the textbox and dropdownlist and then an insert for each question based on ID and score. Please help me! Thanks Andrew
I need to be able to bulk insert a bunch of tables from their corresponding flat file. I have created an XML file (see below) which has the file name/table name pair at each node. I then created a ForEachLoop task and used the Node enumeration type and the following OuterXpathString: ReferenceFiles/File. At this point I get lost. How do I pass the 2 inside node values (file name and table name) to variables which I can then use as expressions for the bulk insert task inside the Foreach?

My problem is the case statement in my Insert Statement. My overall goal is to insert records from one table to another. I have data that i am getting through a dbf file. and i am dumping that data to a sql server... and then taking the data from the sql server after scrubing it i put it into the production database.. right my stored procedure handles a single plan only... but now there may be two or more plans together in the same sql server database which i need to scrub and then update that particular plan already exists or inserts if they dont...

I have an SQL statement to find attractions between certain longitude and latitude values. The attraction i have already added to the database to test has values 51.502899 and 0.003552 for latitude and longitude. As you can see these values fall within the limits of the statement below but nothing is returned.

Hi, I am retriving the value time from my database and i have the convert function on it CONVERT (varchar, Time, 8) When i edit this and try and insert it back to the database i am losing the information. I am not sure how the insert statement shoulld read in order to do this. Thanks Mike
Hi forum, currently I insert a mobile phone number into colomn OK but what I need to do is add +61 as a prefix.Users provide 055 555 555, I want to store number as +61 55 555 555 (note this also drops the 0) my SQL skills a little lacking so appreciate all good info, cheers P
