How To Automatically Replicate Remote Database Which Is Not Permanently Online
Jul 23, 2005
Dear group,
I have to replicate remote data to a SQL Server in the headquarter.
The data are on a site which does not have permanent online-connection
to the headquarter.
I have written a script which replicates the data and i want to set up
a process / batch on the headquarter-machine which roughly does the
following
1) Connect to the remote site
2) start replication script (in fact a stored procedure)
3) on success disconnect from the remote site
All this has to run automatically e.g. during nighttime.
Could someone please outline how i set up the connection and keep it
up during my database-action and how to automatically disconnect after
success of my replication script.
I'd be jolly grateful.
Thanks in advance and Greetings from Vienna
Uli

We have about 40 locations worldwide, with a typical data size of about 200 GB per location, with some up to 2 TB. Most sites have 1024 to 1536 Kb/s MPLS links, with a few 2 Mb/s and one 4.5 Mb/s. Central data center has two 45 Mb/s links.
We are looking to remote, online backups to our data center from each location. I'm wondering which products and processes have worked.
Has anybody successfully implemented remote, online backups of Windows servers across their WAN to a central data center?

there are several remote locations where sql is running, my company has asked me to find a way to collect all the data from the remote locations to a central location automatically, for example day to day data should be synced at night time from 2am to 7 am and it should be compressed automatically before data transfers to the central location. NOTE there is no domain only standalone workstations

Hi,
We have unreliable circuits connecting our office to remote sql servers. At our office I need to delete/insert a bunch of records from those remote locations. Since the connection is unreliable what is the best way to check if a server is available before executing delete/insert statements. A few points to consider:
1. I want this to be done in SQL
2. I have a cursor that cycles through a tabe that contains the name of the linked servers. The cursure is used to delete/insert a bunch of records from each remote server.
3. If one server is unavailable the stored proc should continue to the next sql server (next record in the cursor.)
Thanks,
Bradley

This is related to:
How can I make some graphics drawings stick while others disappear?
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2905460&SiteID=1
Except that now I am trying to connect and update to an Microsoft SQL Server Database File (SqlClient) via VB 2008 Express; specifically a table called €œHexMap€? that contains some columns that I am ready to insert some row data into. Here is what my program should do:
As I hover over a hexagon map of the US a red flickering hexagon follows the location of my mouse cursor. If I click on a given hexagon, the program draws a permanent blue hexagon, and sends a new set of row data into my database. Such information as the name of the state, row, column, center x, and center y, etc. Here is a quick snapshot of this program in action:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3128/2325675990_4155edbdee_o.jpg
-sorry, I didn't capture the mouse cursor inside the red hexagon
I think I am missing something since I appear to be able to connect successfully to the database table. Unfortunately, I never see the changes in the database, when I try to Show Table Data (via Database Explorer). I am hoping someone will review my code snippet (below) and tell me what I am missing. What happens when I run this code is that it acts like it works just fine, except that I have no indication that any changes were actually affected.

Hi,
Is there a way (TSQL, External tool) to turn on remote
access to SQL Server 2005 Express automatically? I do not wish to
use Sql Server Surface Area Configuration to accomplish this.
Could this be done via C#, TSQL, or some external tool that could
be launched from the command line?
Thanks!

We have SQL cluster installed on top of windows cluster on VM environment. Node1 and Node2 under Windows Failover Cluster. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.
SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured. If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately  .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. Hope this is what happening exactly.

I have my first small SQl Server 2005 database developed on my localserver and I have also its equivalent as an online database.I wish to update the local database (using and asp.net interface) andthen to upload the data (at least the amended data, but given thesmall size all data should be no trouble) to the online database.I think replication is the straight answer but I have no experience ofthis and I am wondering what else I might use which might be lesscomplicated. One solution is DTS (using SQL 2000 terms) but i am notsure if I can set this up (1) to overwrite existing tables and (2) notto seemingly remove identity attributes from fields set as identities.I know there are other possibilities but I would be glad of advice asto the likely best method for a small database updated perhaps onceweekly or at less frequent intervals,Best wishes, John Morgan

Very new to the world of databases. Our current database situation is a train wreck, but I'm not at the point I can fix it. So, all I'm trying to do right now is copy our 'live' database so that we can use the copy for development, without worrying about blowing things up.
Anyhow, the problem I have is that when I backup, and then try to restore the 'live' database, I'm told the drive doesn't have enough space, which is accurate (only has 1gig, needs 3gigs). FYI, EVERYTHING that has to do with our databases is currently on a 14gb partition, of which 13gigs are being used. There is an empty partition of 120gb just sitting there.
Can somebody tell me what is the best way to get this 3gb development database up? I tried to route the Data and Transaction Log paths to the empty partition, but it still seemed to want to mess with the 14gb partition and told me there isn't enough space when I tried to restore.

I've just started with a company that had a web developer in to set up their site. She set it up with Coldfusion and MS SQL Server, uploaded the whole thing to their provider, then disappeared. Then the whole thing got dumped in my lap, and I'm pretty new to both SQL Server and Coldfusion.
My first question is, how can I access the SQL Server database online? It's somewhere on the web host's site, and I have the name of it and the password, but I have no clue how I'm supposed to get a look at the thing. Is there a file I should be able to find? Can anyone provide a clue?
Thanks!

Hi,
One of our database size 90 Gb was backed up and restored on a standyby server with NoRecovery option .A Stored Procedure was written to do production Database transaction log Backup every 15 min and restore the Tlog File on Standby server.
Once the last transaction log file is restored on standby server the tlog file is deleted.
Now due to some reason the restore tlog job failed but the tlog file got deleted.
Now till we will not restore the last database backup we will not be able to start the restore tlog job.
Now the database is in restoring mode.Is there any methord to get that database online without any transactionlog.

How do I stop a remote query that INSERTS into a local table from being automatically "upgraded" to a distributed transaction?
I am using Windows 2000 server and SQL Server 2000 SP3a on both machines.
I am executing the following statement in Query analyzer.
INSERT MyLocalServer (col1)
EXECUTE MyRemoteServer.Master.dbo.sp_executesql
@RemoteQuery,
@ParameterDefinition,
@Paramter = 'somevalue'
@RemoteQuery consists of a SELECT four-table join, all tables are on the same linked server.
The Linked server has been set up on MyLocalServer using the "Microsoft OLE DB for SQL Server" provider. In the "Provider Options" for the linked server properties I checked "Non transacted updates" and "dynamic parameters". In the "Server Options" tab I have checked "RPC", "RPC Out", "Data Access".
The EXECUTE part of the query runs great (and returns the data very fast) by itself. But with the INSERT part, the query fails and returns the error:
"Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 17
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a]."
The two servers are seperated by firewalls, so I believe the reason the query is failing is that I haven't followed the procedures for setting up the ports etc described in one of the microsoft support articles: e.g.: 250367.
Configuring the ports involves too much company politics, and besides, for what this query does, it does not need the benefits of a distributed transaction.
How can I execute my query without SQL Server automatically trying to upgrade it to a distributed transaction?
More Info: I can execute the query as a straight INSERT/SELECT linked-server query and it does the INSERT on the local SQL Server just like I want it to, so I assume it is not trying to use distributed transactions; but it takes around 7 seconds to run even though the entire SELECT is executed on the linked server, whereas executing with sp_executesql takes only 1 second.
I thought selected "non-transacted updates" in the provider would solve this problem, but it did not.
Anyone know the answer?

My company is considering purchasing MS SQL Server to run anapplication on (SASIxp). I am mainly familiar with Oracle, so I waswondering how long it would take to copy a database. Basically we havedatabase A and each night we want to replace database B with thecontents of A. How long would this take say if we had a 10GB databaseor a 20GB database. What would be the technique to do this nightly, the Copy DatabaseWizard, Snapshot Replication, Attach & Detach...? We need to automatethis process, and the source database can be made unavailable whenthis happens. Thanks,Roger

The basic feature is that aclient will answer a number of questions online and based on theresults an approach will be recommended. There will be four pages with 5 questions on each site, this will allbe sent to a database and based on this an approach will be generated.I'm using mysql, php and html w/javascript for developing this but theproblem I have is that I'm not sure how the calculation andsuggestions will be coded. I've though of putting an average result into the database and then retrieve a ‘matching' approach based on thiswith querying using php.Any other recommendation is MUCH appreciated.many many thanks!
