How To Capture Validation Errors Inside SSIS Package
Oct 24, 2007
Hi
I have created a package which executes every 10 mins. Last week end for maintenance purpose, I shutdown my database. Now as an initial execution process, my package does the default validation steps on which the database connection validation step fails. As this is the default functionality of SSIS I am not able to capture this error. Is there anyway to capture this error inside SSIS Package?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have a package which has 5 connection managers. One of the Connection Manager has incorrect server name, which results in Package Validation error. Which event handler should be used to run on such errors for OnError Event handler doesnt work @ all.
Thanks

I have an Execute Process Task within my package that executes a BCP command which outputs the resultset of a query to a file in the network share. It works fine most of the time, however sometimes for unknown reasons, the following error message gets logged in my log table -
In Executing "c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinncp.exe" "Select Comments, SoldToCustomerNbr, ProductGroupingCode, ProductGroupingName, RevSumCategoryCode, RevSumCategoryName, ValidFromDate, DTSCollectPct, DTSPrepaidPct, DTSPickUpPct, DCCollectPct, DCPrepaidPct, DCPickUpPct From ShipmentTypeCustomerBlend" queryout \xxxLOGShipmentTypeCustomerBlendLog_060719201440.txt -c -t" " -SDummyServer -T -e"d:SSIS Error LogsJob ExecutionBcpErrors.log" at "", The process exit code was "1" while the expected was "0".
The above error was captured from the System::ErrorDescription variable, by the error event handler, that was attached to the Execute Process Task. This error does not help me to debug the issue.
On running the below statement from the command prompt, i get the actual error message, which is the expected behavior -
"c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinncp.exe" "Select Comments, SoldToCustomerNbr, ProductGroupingCode, ProductGroupingName, RevSumCategoryCode, RevSumCategoryName, ValidFromDate, DTSCollectPct, DTSPrepaidPct, DTSPickUpPct, DCCollectPct, DCPrepaidPct, DCPickUpPct From ShipmentTypeCustomerBlend" queryout \xxxLOGShipmentTypeCustomerBlendLog_060719201440.txt -c -t" " -SDummyServer -T -e"d:SSIS Error LogsJob ExecutionBcpErrors.log"
Expected Error Message -
Unable to open BCP host data-file.
This error message indicates that either the network path - \xxxLOG is not available for the output file creation or the file - \xxxLOGShipmentTypeCustomerBlendLog_060719201440.txt could not be created for some reason.
I 've tried to capture the error message from the StandardErrorVariable and the StandardOutputVariable properties of the ExecuteProcess Task, but in vain.
Is this a bug ? If so, is there a way to get the actual error message from the task ?
Thanks,Reni

Is there a way you can open an SSIS package without validating it?
The reason is - when I take a package from PROD and open it in DEV - initially all settings-variables are wrong - and the validation takes heck of long time in that case. And then I need to change the variables and reload the package. And bloody hell - if I forgot to change a variable - I sometimes have to validate package 3 times. And sometimes - I only need to get visual look of package - so why do I always need to wait for validation...

We are going to be running a package repeatedly 24/7. The same package against the same data store, filtered using a "stageFlag" so as not to read rows previously processed. We have various timing statistics and have yet to fine tune; but on the surface it appears that it takes approximately three minutes to validate and another three minutes to run. If we have no additional data on the second run it still takes three minutes to complete - to do nothing but skip rows already processed.
Is it possible to set this up to run repeatedly without the validation on each iteration?
Any ideas as to how this would be accomplished would be greatly appreciated.

My SSIS package will just hang (do nothing) after validation of the package tasks. I realised that it does 2 validation. It then hits "starting exectuing" and then nothing. I mean nothing. It just stays the same. When I look into the logg file, the same message as in the output window. My package has parallel extract of data from the same datasource, but different tables. I dont know if that the problem but i really doubt it because i have done parallel table downloads countless times in version 2000. When i go into the data task window, the source task does no even indicate that its downloading (color yellow). Is there any reason why this will happen? Ooo, but the tasks executes just fine when i execute them individually (right click > execute).

I have SSIS Projects taking a long time to open with packages with a large number of data flows. Is there a way to turn off validation of metadata when a package opens? Turn off validation during execution on SSIS Service (after previously validated in dev)? Or be able to control when validation takes place in general?
In my one package (1 of 5) I have 43 data flows (with a single source to target mapping) in 4 sequence containers, and it takes approximately 2-3 seconds per source to target mapping and sequence container to validate which will translate to 1 ˝ to 2 ˝ minutes to open. When the project with all 100+ tables for the data warehouse goes through validation, I can make coffee in the time it takes to open the project. I have to delete *.suo file (or verify all packages are closed in the designer and save the project file), and when I open the project, I have to jump immediately to SSISĂ Work Offline to set it to not validate the metadata to be able to work in a timely fashion. DelayValidation=TRUE does not help much.
Running in debug mode, has an effect of causing packages that were not open and validated to go through validation though I am not running those packages. Validate once during design and run forever.
Even if I re-open a package that I just closed from designer and had gone through validation, it will go through the validation process again.
It would be great if there could be an on-demand option off the menu bar to allow one to control when validation can take place for a project, or a more granular validation option for a specific data flow or container.

When I push my SSIS packages up to my production server (which has a different data source than my developement environment) and I try to open the package on the production server, it takes forever for to validate all the steps of the SSIS package because it's trying to validate against a datasource that isnt there, so it just waits for each element it's validating to time out. This is exceptionally annoying.
Is there a way to turn off this validation 'feature'?

Hi All,
I am in the process of moving from a 32-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054) to a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054 with 4 CPUs and 8GB of memory on Win 2003 SP2) and the process has been very frustrating to say the least. I am having a problem with packages that I created on my 64-bit SQL Server. I am importing a few tables from the 32-SQL Server into the 64-bit SQL Server using the Task --> Import to create the package.
Sometimes when I am creating a package I get the following error in a message box:
SQL Server Import and Export Wizard
The SSIS Runtime object could not be created. Verify that DTS.dll is available and registered. The wizard cannot continue and it will terminate.
Additional information: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (System.Windows.Forms)
Other times when I run a package that has run successfully before I get the following error:
Faulting application dtexecui.exe, version 9.0.3042.0, stamp 45cd726d, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault address 0x025d23f0.
Other times I get this error message:
.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)
And still other times
The package appears to hang when running. By this I mean that the Package Execution Progress shows progress up to a point then it just stops. (The package takes about 17 seconds to run normally) CPU usage is at 1% and the package cannot be stopped.
I have deleted and re-created the package several times and I have also re-installed the service pack on the SQL Server (9.0.3054) but that did not help.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to try?
Thanks.

I have an SSIS package authored in SSDT for VS 2013 that cancels itself immediately after validation completes and execution commences. This behavior occurs when executed either in VS 2013 or from within SQL Server. No error messages are thrown in either the debug window or the log output (log is capturing everything). The only thing that occurs differently on this package as compared to another package I am able to execute successfully is that a command line window briefly flashes when the package cancels itself—but it is gone so fast I cannot read it. The last several lines of the debug output are as follows:
-----------------
Information: 0x40043006 at Merge Info, SSIS.Pipeline: Prepare for Execute phase is beginning.
Information: 0x40043007 at Merge Info, SSIS.Pipeline: Pre-Execute phase is beginning.
Information: 0x402090DC at Merge Info, All Users CSV [2]: The processing of file "C:...AllUsers.csv" has started.
Information: 0x400490F4 at Merge Info, Lookup Org [47]: Lookup Org has cached 957 rows.
Information: 0x400490F5 at Merge Info, Lookup Org [47]: Lookup Org has cached a total of 26719 rows.
[Code] ....
What circumstances an SSIS package would cancel itself without throwing any errors?

I am using SSIS to populate a star schema.
The issue is in the data flow for loading and setting the Fact table dimension keys (the dimensions are all loaded fine). After 16 rather pedestrian Lookup Transformations, I have an escalating problem adding additional Lookup transforms to the Data Flow. The problem is not in execution; the problem is adding more transforms in design mode.
Lookup # Fields in Data Flow Time to validate that lookup
<17 47 Sub-second
17 48 2 sec
18 49 4 sec
19 50 8 sec
20 51 16 sec
21 52 32 sec
22 53 64 sec
While I€™m intrigued by the mathematical progression that is forming here, the issue is that I have at least 6 more Lookups to perform. I hope you can see my dilemma.
I have gone to where it takes a little over 4 minutes each to validate the lookup transform and its associated Derived Column transform and Union transform (Total 12 Minutes). Not only does this add up to many idle minutes to each design step, BUT it breaks the debugger as it pre-validates the ENTIRE data flow before it ever switches into debugging mode.
Some notes:
1. It doesn€™t matter what order the Lookup transforms occur in, the timings are exactly the same.
2. I tried many Data Flow execution optimizations, but they don€™t improve the validation times (or even get a chance to improve the execution times!)
I realize this may be somewhat of a unique problem.
Thanks for any help you are able to lend.
-Dave

I've built an SSIS package in SSDT 2014. The package was running successfully
When I close and open the package it hangs on validation of single task out of all.
OLEDB DESTINATION Task
I have tried several times to close the SSDT and open but facing same issue.
These seems like bugs in SSIS/SSDT. What would cause the relocation of some script code to hang the validation process like this?

I got an SSIS package
that first "truncate the product table" then populate the table with new rows....if there is an error then i will invoke the send email task. However in the "truncate the product table" task, the sql i put "truncate dbo.product" instead of "truncate table dbo.product" but this error is not captured in the text file that I m going to send an email to the appropriate personnel.
Under logging, and when i go into "truncate product table" tasks , "Details", i saw "OnError", "OnWarning" and other error handlers...which should i tick in order for the text file to ONLY show errors I encounteered during the running of the SSIS package?

Hi folks,
I have a simple SSIS package I built to migrate data from a SQL db on one server to another SQL db on another server. All it does is: Execute SQL task to disable some triggers on the target table, Data Flow Task to pull the data from the source (a simple sql query) into the destination table (using OLEDB), then another Execute SQL task to re-enable the triggers.
This package ran fine several times during my testing. However, this morning it's not working anymore. When I run it and check its progress, the "Validation has started" is the only thing runs, then nothing else happens... no error messages, no timeouts, nothing in the output window besides "DTS.Pipeline: Validation phase is beginning".
The only thing that has changed is one change to a date in the where clause of my source query, so I'm baffled on why it no longer runs.
I'm pretty new to SSIS, so I could easily be missing something obvious here.
Anyone have any ideas on what's up, or who can point me in the right direction? I'm currently reading up on how to debug and add more comprehensive error handling, in hopes of finding a better description of the problem.
Thanks in advance,
Geoff

Hi All,
I hope someone can help becuase this problem is issue us several headaches.
We are currently trying to deploy an SSIS package to a production server. The deployment goes fine, the package runs ok when executed manually. The issues start when we try and execute it under the SQL agent.
Having gone back to the drawing board and spent much of the day reading various articles and applying the various options (especially those within the MS KB article 918760), we are still no closer to a resolution.
The SSIS package was created under an Administrator, and the SQL agent runs under a different Domain Admin account.
When we set up the Schedule to read from SQL Server or the SSIS Store the standard "Executed as user: DOMAINUSERNAME. The package execution failed. The step failed" in the history.
We tried to create the package as a file access and now get "Package could not be found" even though you can browse to i in the schedule list. The Domain account as full access to the folder where the package resides.
Has anyone else come across this issue, or have a workable solution?
Many TIA.

I've deployed an ssis package to the database server through the manifest file over the network..
The package runs great when testing through vs.net on my client.
I've added the package to a job step in the sql server job agent.
When I test the new job, the package step fails, but there is no error or log information in the job history.
Wwhere can I get error information? And/or How can make SSIS error information more verbose in the job history?

Lately, I have been experimenting with SSIS and I created a generic custom error logging component that saves all offending data on data flow component failure. However...
Instead of re-directing rows at the data flow level and handling/logging the data at that level, is it possible to catch all of this information at the package level and handle/process it there?
If so how would you do this?
Thanks!

I have a data flow task in which I have a ADO NET source and OLE DB Destination. I have in the ADO NET source a sql command which pulls all the columns in a table. My requirement is to ignore a particular column, say column99. I opened advanced editor and deleted the mapping between the external and output columns for column99. I had also set the Error and Truncation to "Ignore Failure" for column99. I had also mapped the destination column to <Ignore> in OLD DB destination.
But this still throws the error-
Description: The ADO NET Source was unable to process the data. Field table-column99 missing an escape character for a quote.Unable to update PK WHERE clause.Error processing data batch.
How do I solve this?

I created a package that will, on it's very first step, create a temporary table that will be used throughout the package. In the final step I drop this table.
Running the package bit by bit works, however the moment I attempt to run the full package (or the container that holds the bulk of it) i get a validation error because the table does not exists.
Anyone knows how can I suppress this validation from occurring? I know the table wont exists until the package starts executing and it telling me it cant proceed because the table does not exists is preventing me from doing anything.

Hi all!!
I have a stored procedure that dynamically bulk loads several tables from several text files. If I encounter an error bulk loading a table in the stored procedure, all I get is the last error code produced, but if I run the actual bulk load commands through SQL Management Studio, it gives much more usable errors, which can include the column that failed to load. We have tables that exceed 150 columns (don't ask), and having this information cuts troubleshooting load errors from hours down to minutes. Onto my question..., is there any way to capture all of the errors produced by the bulk load from within a stored procedure (see examples below)?
Running this...
BULK INSERT Customers
FROM 'c: estcustomers.txt'
WITH (TabLock, MaxErrors = 0, ErrorFile = 'c: estcustomers.txt.err')
Produces this (notice column name at the end of the first error)...
Msg 4864, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk load data conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage) for row 1, column 1 (CustId).
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7330, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)".
Running this (similar to code in my stored procedure)...
BEGIN TRY
BULK INSERT Customers
FROM 'c: estcustomers.txt'
WITH (TabLock, MaxErrors = 0, ErrorFile = 'c: estcustomers.txt.err')
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
SELECT
ERROR_NUMBER() AS ErrorNumber,
ERROR_SEVERITY() AS ErrorSeverity,
ERROR_STATE() AS ErrorState,
ERROR_PROCEDURE() AS ErrorProcedure,
ERROR_LINE() AS ErrorLine,
ERROR_MESSAGE() AS ErrorMessage;
END CATCH
Produces something similar to this (which is useless)...
...Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)".

I am using the XML Task to validate an XML file against the XSD schema.
Everything works fine, but about detailed errors in the case of the failed validation?
1) I specified €śOperationsResult€? Destination property to save the task execution outcome into a file.
2) Also, I turned on all possible events for logging.
Unfortunately, neither option produces a detailed validation error message.
Option 1 saves one single word €śtrue€? or €śfalse€? to a file.
Logging produces the following message:
Task failed to validate "A validation error occurred when validating the instance document.".
As end result, it is impossible to pinpoint the problem with the xml file and, consequently, fix the issue.
The expected behavior should be a detailed error message like the following (produced by StylusStudio):
file:///c:/temp/fafa/feed_bad.xml:12824,52: Datatype error: Type:InvalidDatatypeFacetException,
Message:Value '244212' must be less than or equal to MaxInclusive '4'.
It shows a precise location of the error in the XML file plus the specific XSD rule which failed.
Any idea what could be done to get the detailed error message for the XML Task Validation?
Regards,
Yitzhak
