How To Check The Remote Shared Drive?
Nov 3, 2006
Hello, everyone:
I want to write a query to check a remote shared drive. The shared drive is mapped as T drive in my local. I run the statement,
EXEC master.. xp_cmdshell 'DIR C:'
It works. If I change to T drive like,
EXEC master.. xp_cmdshell 'DIR T:'
It dosen't work and returns,
"The system cannot find the path specified."
But I run DIR T: in DOS prompt, it works.
Any help will be great appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

Hi
I have been trying to use openrowset with a shared drive, and even though the share has "full control" permissions granted to "everyone" and the accout that SQL runs under has been granted explicit full control permissions I am unable to open the file which itself has no security on it.
Can I not use a \ path and only use mapped drives?
Thanks
below works...
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=C:5People.xls', [Sheet1$])
below doesn't work...
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=\cluster02FileManager5People.xls', [Sheet1$])

I have an Access2000 app placed on a shred drive. The problem i am having is that users leave it opened and take long breaks. Sometimes they leave it overnight. I would like to make corrections to the form but can't. How can I save and close all users. I would like to send a message telling all users to save any changes and give them 1 minute before shutting down.
Thanks

Is this possible? I can only seem to restore when the *.bak is on a local drive which is ridiculous. I'm sure this translates to other operations in addition to restoring databases...

I know , it is not going to work , just wondering if anyone could give any reasons for that. Whether it was intentional constraint or just internally compact edition was designed in particular way which makes such a usage not possible. It is a pity that it doesn't work that way as it would be much easier transitional path for many Visual Foxpro , MS Access applications.
In my case I just want READ-ONLY database either for multi-user access via shared drive or stand-alone on local drive.

Hi
I am having an Access database on a shared network drive which has read/write access rights on the that shared network drive.
When I try to Access data through the linked server it gives me gives me a message box saying you do not have permissions to view the data.
Also if i try to use xp_cmdshell to copy over the mdb file to my local drive it say 'Access denied'
But when I copy (through command prompt) the same file to another network drive or my local drive where I have full control the linked server can connect sucessfully.
The problem is the i cannot have 'full control' permissions on shared drive where my database resides.
Has anybody encountered this problem....
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to get access to the files on the shared drive from either of the nodes when the SQL Cluster is shut down?
It doesn't look like there is, but hoping there is some trick. I see how it can be done with a Windows Cluster but not a SQL Cluster.

I am trying to get my hosting company to provide a way to make secure encrypted connections from my desktop (where I am using Enterprise Manager and Aqua Data Studio) to their shared MS SQL Server.
I've seen some references to SSH, but I don't understand how this works or how the host would implement it. I also read that an SSL certificate can be installed on SQL Server, but it doesn't seem as if EM or ADS can make SSL connections to SQL Server. (In case it makes any difference for either of these solutions, the hosting company has port 1433 open, and will not close it because some clients connect to the DB server from web apps on their own intranets.)
Finally, if a web-based admin is used instead (like phpMyAdmin for MySQL), then which machine is the software installed on? Can it be on a web server that makes a local connection to the DB server or does it have to be on the DB machine? E.g., if I had a VPS or dedicated server at the same hosting company would I be able to install web-based admin software which would then connect to the host's shared SQL Server?
Anyway, my host is giving incomprehensible (to me) objections to all of these ideas. Is there a reasonably simple way to do this on a shared DB server?

Dear all,
I now have 2 server, say serverA and serverB. ServerA has a SQL server and I am using a command in the SQL server to access the serverB. The command is:
declare @command varchar(500)
set @command = 'mkdir ' + '"\serverBabckevin_wong123"
exit'
exec master.dbo.XYRunProc
'cmd.exe',
'c:',
@command
where abc is a shared folder in serverB which can be accessed by serverA. However the output of this execution is "c:> mkdir "\serverBabckevin_wong123" Access is denied". It is possible to do this in command prompt. Does anyone know what's the problem of this?
Thank you very much!!

Our production database is located on one server, and our test database resides on another. Often, we need to restore the production dump to the test database. But the Restore Device from Server window doesn`t seem to allow references to dump files on a different server. I`ve tried using the Add Backup Disk File window to point to the remote location; but it doesn`t seem to save the reference when I close the window.
I`m sure there`s a way to handle this without copying the dump file from one server to the other.
This would seem to be a common scenario. Thanks for any suggestions that others have found useful.

I have an SSIS package which accesses a map UNC path drive. It works fine when I run SSIS from Visual Studio. However, when I run this from a SQL Server job, it gives an error.
I am not allowed to use xp_cmdshell due to security reasons. If someone can point me to right direction, that would be greatly appricated.
Thanks

Hi,all.
I tried to issue:
sp_attach_db pubs,'F:anthonypubs.mdf','F:anthonypubs.ldf'
where the pubs.mdf and pubs.ldf are on a remote mapped drive F:,
I got error:
Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
Device activation error. The physical file name 'f:anthonypubs.ldf' may
be incorrect.
Is attaching a database ONLY supported for local servers ??
What about creating database on remote drive? (I have same error msg back)
Thx

I am about designing an access project file that connect to a SQL Server database : it could be either on the local computer or a remote workstation, this depending on where the front end is running.
Bypassing the default log on dialog box i have set my own form that users should use to connect on adp. Then using baseconnection string i connect the adp to sql server database.
My concern is how can i check from vba if the instance of SQL Server where my back end database is located is running in order to make
users knowing that due sql server service status off their connection
tentative will fail.
inform u i can check same from console management however i would to automate same controle from my adp and avoid that users have to operate such task...

Hi,
We have unreliable circuits connecting our office to remote sql servers. At our office I need to delete/insert a bunch of records from those remote locations. Since the connection is unreliable what is the best way to check if a server is available before executing delete/insert statements. A few points to consider:
1. I want this to be done in SQL
2. I have a cursor that cycles through a tabe that contains the name of the linked servers. The cursure is used to delete/insert a bunch of records from each remote server.
3. If one server is unavailable the stored proc should continue to the next sql server (next record in the cursor.)
Thanks,
Bradley

I am trying to move a log file from one drive to another.
What I have done is add another file to my file group. So now my log has a file on the 'e' drive and one on the 'f' drive. I now want to remove the file on the 'e' drive. I have emptied the file on the 'e' drive. When doing the command:
ALTER DATABASE Uniprodruntime
REMOVE FILE m_rk_runtime_log
I get the following error message..
Server: Msg 5020, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The primary data or log file cannot be removed from a database.
I have also gone into enterprise manager and tried to delete the file and it does nothing.
Has anyone run into this?

Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.
How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?

Hi,
I am trying to use shared variables in the emebedded code of a report. But
when i assign a value to the shared variable in the detail level and access
the same from footer it shows different value (0).
I declared an integer variable as a shared variable. And changed its value
in the detail level. Then tried to access its value in the table footer.
Public Shared testVal As Integer
Function testValFunc()
testVale = 25
End Function
In detail level i call Code.testValFunc()
In footer -> Code.testValFunc() gives 0
Any Idea??? Is it because the header/footer is computed first and then the detail?

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)This is my connection string;<add name="ClubSiteDB" connectionString="Data Source=xx.xxx.xx.xx,xxxx; Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=tets; User ID=sqladminbob;Password=sqlbob4398;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient="/>I hav also tried to use aspnet_regsql.exe to add the remote provider but I get the same message.
