How To Compare Nvarchar(15), Char(5), And String

I have used a query statement with the following WHERE string to 'Fill' a dataset.

"AND (A.ApptsDate > '" & strApptPreDate & "' OR (A.ApptsDate = '" & strApptPreDate & "' AND A.ApptsTime >= '" & strApptPreTime & "' ))" & _ and strApptPreTime is defined as:
Dim strApptPreTime As String = SomaShared.strPadTime(CStr(dApptCalcNewDate.Hour) + ":" + CStr(dApptCalcNewDate.Minute))

Somehow, the dataset showed only the ApptsTime after 10 am. After more than 2 weeks of debugging, I still can see a dataset watch for > 10 am
AppsTime only.   Now I am guessting, the problem is 9 is different from 10 - 16, it all because 9 is single digit. Then I check the data type settings for these variables. Here are what I found:

In SQL Server Agent job, the ApptsTime data was 'inserted' by @NewApptTimes, which is declared as char(5).
In SQL Server database, the ApptsTime was defined as nvarchar(15).

My question are:
     1. The reason why there were no 9 am data for the dataset, is becasue 9 am of nvarchar(15) is not > 8:30 of strApptPreTime?
     2. If the answer to the quation 1 is yes, how do I define AppsTime and/or strApptPreTime?

Compare Nvarchar(10) With Nvarchar(1000)

I had this question for quite a long time.

It seems the latter one don't take any extra storage space than the previous one.

As long as the real string length is less than 10.

Is that mean the latter one not cost anything?

I once heard the different is when they are in memory. But not sure of it.

Can anyone explain it and provide some official reference on it?

Datatypes Nchar/nvarchar Vs Char/varchar

can anybody please explain me why microsoft using nvarchar/nchar instead of varchar/char in northwind database and pubs database. I know if a column holds unicode data you should use nvarchar or nchar but for me all those tables in northwind/pubs are not holding unicode data. but still why microsoft settled for nchar/nvarchar.

Converting CHAR/VARCHAR/TEXT Into NCHAR/NVARCHAR/NTEXT!!!

Hi,
We are in process of converting all of the data type of the fields from CHAR/VARCHAR/TEXT into NCHAR/NVARCHAR/NTEXT (DBCS). Having more than 900 store procedure its look like real pain to make modification in all of the SPs.

After failed to find any help from GOOGLE, I am posting this request. I am basically looking for any automated tool which are convert data type in SP based on the field of the table used in the SP. Or at least which can provide me some sort of list which can helpful for doing manual reactoring.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

What's Difference About Datatype Char,VarChar,NChar,NVarChar In Sql 2000 ?

       PoNo(the length is 15 characters) ,Supplier Name(the length is 50 characters).etc
      but I don't how to select the datatype for them. should I select Char or VarChar ?
      which one is the best slection ?

Cannot Compare NVarChar(Max) Fields Over 4000 Chars

I had a post a week or so ago with this issue, I found the cause, but cannot figure out how to fix it... The problem is the comparison on the NVarChar(Max) fields when one of them exceeds 4000 chars. If I comment out the following lines of the stored proc, everything works. I tested without using COALESCE and it still does not work. Hi

Is there any function to seperate a sting (VARCHAR) into two based on a character in the string (e.g. '-').

In short is there "InStr" or "split" type function in T-SQL ? If not what is the alternative?

I have a column called "Range" (VarChar) in the table which has ranges like 1-14 or 15-49 etc.

I need to select records by compare a variable (numeric) against these ranges.

So for instace if the variable has 15 its in range 15-49.

I was thinking of spliting the range field into two so that comparison is possible.

Any suggestions?

Turn Hex Into Char String And Concatenate

I've been trying to return hex data in a way that can be concatenated.
I need the actual hex info (e.g. 0x6E3C070) as displayed
since it contains info about the path to a file.
So I can turn it into D:6E3C7 to get the path to the file.
In searching around I have come across a way to do this but can't figure out how to get it to run through a column and either display or insert into a table multiple results.

-Here's the user function that converts an integer into a hex string-

How do I get a single quote (') in a NVARCHAR string in MS SQL Server?e.g. SELECT @strsql = "SELECT * FROM tblTest WHERE Field1 Like 'blah''Obviously this is invalid as the single quote before "blah" would end thevarchar string.How do I get round this?

Built In Function To Search The Occurence Of Char In String

Hi Everyone-
i woder if someone know Built in function to search the occurence of char in string in T-SQL

and iam not talking about the Index of the first occurence (e.g CHARINDEX )
but it is more generic

i want to send to the function to ask about the index the second or the third or N occurence of the char.
and i wonder if it is built in for performance reasons

example
getseachIndex("M|d|d","|",2)==> the result is 4

How Do I Insert A String Value With Quotes Into A Nvarchar Column

I am reading data from another data source and storing it in the sqlce database. Some of the string values I'm trying to insert into the database have single quotes in the string (i.e. Johnny's Company). When I try to insert the values with the single quotes, it throws an exception. The code I use to insert the records is as follows:

cmd.CommandText = "INSERT sy_company " +

" (company_id, company, co_name, companyid) " +

"VALUES(" +

"'" + dtSYCompany.Rows[x]["company_id"] + "'," +

"N'" + dtSYCompany.Rows[x]["company"] + "'," +

"N'" + dtSYCompany.Rows[x]["co_name"] + "'," +

"'" + dtSYCompany.Rows[x]["companyid"] + "')";

cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();

When the company name (co_name) has a single quote in it, I get the error. How do I write the insert statement so it will work even though the value being inserted into co_name has a single quote in it?

When i use the following querry i get no result when i know i should be getting one.

Select *
from table1
where '16bbbT1' >= StartStr and '16bbbT1' <= EndStr

When i use
Select *
from table1
where '16bbbT1' >= StartStr

I get all the values above 16bbbT1
and conversly when i use
Select *
from table1
where '16bbbT1' <= EndStr
i get all the values less then 16bbbT1

I need to plug both where clause
can anyone help

Search String Field (nvarchar) For Unicode Characters

MS SQL 2000. Does anyone know how to find all rows where an nvarchar column contains a specific unicode character? Is it possible without creating a user defined function? Here's the issue. I have a table Expression (ExpID, ExpText) with values like 'x < 100' and 'y ≤ 200'. where the second example contains Unicode character 8804 [that is, nchar(8804)]. Because it's unicode, I don't seem to be able to search for it with LIKE or PATINDEX. These fail:
SELECT * FROM Expression WHERE ExpText LIKE '%≤%' -- no recordsSELECT * FROM Expression WHERE PATINDEX('%≤%', ExpText) -- no records
However, SELECT PATINDEX('%≤%', 'y ≤ 200') will return 3.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Pass NVARCHAR (or Other String-type) Var As A Column Or Table Name In SQL

Hey folks, the question is fairly simple, unfortunately the answer has proven rather elusive.

Is it possible to declare a variable which would then be used to identify either a column or table in an SQL statement?

Here's a basic idea of what I'd like to do:

DECLARE @myVar AS NVARCHAR(50)

SELECT *
FROM @myVar

or

DECLARE @myVar AS NVARCHAR(50)

SELECT @myVar
FROM MyTable

I'm probably looking for some sort of built in function that will accept an argument here... like COLUMN(@myVar) or something of the like. I just don't know where to look...

What is the difference updating a null value to char/varchar type column

versus empty string to char/varchar type column?Which is the best to do and why?
Could anyone explain about this?

Example:

Table 1 : tCountry - Name varchar(80) nullable
Table 2 :tState - Name char(2) nullable
Table 3 :tCountryDetails - countryid,state (char(2) nullable) - May the country contain state or no state
So,when the state is not present for the country ,i have two options may be - null,''
tCountryDetails.State = '' or tCountryDetails.State = null?

need to look through hundreds of rows and compare two columns, and pull out rows where the date difference is 7 days

problem is one column stores the date as a string and values in that column look like this:

01/12/2007 10:15 pm
or
01/12/2007

the other column stores the date as seconds since 1/1/1970, which is good and easy to work with..

how do I write the select?

Compare String To Hash Value

Ok, here is what i'm trying to do and its driving me nuts.

ok,

1) I have a proc that runs and needs to validate the user prior to running - this proc is called from an hand held device

2) the id and password are being passed as "clear text" but the password is stored in the database table hashed.

Is there anything on the db side that can get the hash value from the password column of the aspnet_membership table and compare it to the password being passed in to this proc? I have suggested several options to the handheld developer but nothing. This has to be done on the database side.

so,

username and password are passed to proc from handheld.

proc needs to validate ther user in the aspnet_membership table

if user id and password are valid execute the stored procedure

is this possible? if so can ANYONE point me to some examples of this being done?

I have a column in my table like so:
'D4B00 L2A00 L3A00 L6C00 P1C00 L2A28 P4B00 '
How do I check in SQL if any pieces have the first 3 character the same. In the above case, L2A is present twice. I need to do this because I need display disctinct items, therefore L2A needs to be displayed only once.

to work correctly please?

WHERE item = '@item' AND week = @week

won't work and

WHERE item = @item AND week = @week

won't work.

how SQL 2012 would treat a literal string for a comparison similar to below. I want to ensure that the server isn't implicitly converting the value as it runs the SQL, so I'd rather change the data type in one of my tables, as unicode isn't required.

Declare @T Table (S varchar(2))
Declare @S nvarchar(255)
Insert into @T
Values ('AR'), ('AT'), ('AW')
Set @S = 'Auto Repairs'
Select *
from @T T
where case @S when 'Auto Repairs' then 'AR'
when 'Auto Target' then 'AT'
when 'Auto Wash' then 'AW' end = T.STo summarise

in the above would AR, AT and AW in the case statement be treated as a nvarchar, as that's the field the case is wrapped around, or would it be treated as a varchar, as that's what I'm comparing it to.
