How To Configure An Enterprise Deployment Of SQL 2005

Jul 26, 2006

I€™m interested in reading about best practices or
recommended deployments for MS SQL 2005.
Currently our company owns 8 x SQL 2005 Enterprise Processor licenses. We have 4 HP DL380€™s with the following
configurations:

6GB RAM

Mirrored
72GB drives for OS (Windows 2003 Ent R2)

4TB Shared
storage (SAN) (15K Fiber Channel)

Dual 3.6GHz
Processors

We would like to create a highly available data
warehouse. We considered running the
SQL engine on one set of servers (Cluster 1) and running the reporting, analysis,
browser, etc., services on the other set of servers (Cluster 2).

Is this possible with MS SQL 2005?

How do we install and link all the servers together?

Is this a poor design?

With the above hardware and software, what would be the best
deployment for availability, distributed processing, speed, and reliability and scalability?

Thank you.

SSIS - Data Sources - Configure For Deployment?

Jan 26, 2006

I had posted this in the following pre-existing thread :

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=89737&SiteID=1

Also wanted to start a thread on this to see if I can get some suggestions. Any suggestions on how to do this are appreciated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Books-Online quote:

>> In Integration Services, data sources are design-time objects that you use when you build packages in SSIS Designer.

This is indeed the case but why? I would like to see it changed or provide some way of including the data source in some kind of a "solution/project configuration", the same way one can create a "package configuration" right now.

If one can build a project, and create a deployment utility to deploy the entire project (all packages), it is incoceivable why one shouldn't be able to set configurations at a "project" level.

Right now I am having to create package configurations to configure my connection setting for dev/test/prod etc environments. But the trouble is, if I have 10 packages each involving 3 connections in my project, I have only 3 data sources in my project, but come deployment time, I'm having to create 10 package configurations, and set my ConnectionString (which is different for dev/test/prod etc) 30 times during deployment.

If there is a better way to do it, I would like to know. Otherwise, this is what I would like to see in the next SP.

------------------------------------

thanks,

RV

Configure Connection Strings For Deployment To Different Servers

Sep 29, 2006

Hi,

We currently have a test and development environment for our data warehouse which is using SSIS packages to build (SSIS packages call stored procedures). We have multiple connections accross the different packages. The problem that we are having is when we deploy the packages to the development environment, the connection strings in the packages are still pointing to the live server! Hence, when we run these packages in the test environment, they actually execute the stored procedures in our live server.

I have tried to use package configurations and the deployment utility to assist us in this regard but have still come up with a few problems:

- When running the deployment utility, I still have to go and manually type in the data source the connection string must use - Is there maybe a way to use some sort of a variable that will automatically set this dependant on the name of the server that you are deploying to?

-It seems, even when I deploy to my live server, if I change the data source to point to my live server, it goes and changes the data source for the packages on my test server to point to the live servesr as well/

Basically, what I would like at the end of the day is to just be able to select the server the packages must be deployed to, and the connesction strings must be set automatically to either the test or live server dependong on which one I deploy to. Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks in advance

Enterprise Deployment Of SSIS

Jun 13, 2006

Hello, we are interested in upgrading our Data Warehouse environment to SQL Server 2005 to take advantage of SSIS. Our current data warehouse environment consists of 2 production servers with over 900 DTS packages between the 2 servers.

Are there any white papers out there detailing what type of deployment works well for an Enterprise wide use of SSIS? We're trying to determine if we should use SSIS on the same server hosting our databases, or separate SSIS onto its own dedicated box. If we went the dedicated route, what type of horsepower would we need on the SSIS box (procs, RAM, etc.)? Also, if we went the dedicated route, does it make sense to have 1 SSIS server that handles the data warehouse packages and the OLTP packages, or should that be separated into 2 SSIS servers having one server for each environment?

Thanks for any help you can provide on this subject!

Dec 17, 2007

Hi All,
I am new to SQL server 2005. I have installed SQL server 2005 which came along with the visual studio 2005 package. Now i could see the visual studio 2005 in the installed programs list.
I really dont know how to configure the the installed SQL server. how to create tables and veiw. frankly speaking i could not see where is the head and tail.

To be straight forward, i havent used any database to a great extent. earlier during the starting of my career, i developed a small application using VC++, which used to interact with the DB server on a very minor scale; whenever i wanted to create a table for used to do it with sql client which was also installed in my machine.

currently i am againg devoloping a small apliccation using VC++, this time for devlopment and testing purposes, I have SQL server 2005 installed in the same machine which i am using for development.
Now as i said eralier i am not even aware how to configure, how to start creating table...... :-(

all i have done is i have installed SQL server 2005 and all i could see is SQL Server 2005 listed in the installed programs list :-(

This Is How You Configure A DB2 Linked Server In MS SQL 2005.

Jul 26, 2006

With Linked server you can access DB2 resources as if it is another object in your SQL Server.

You don€™t have to establish links from all nodes to the DB2 Server.

Connection from SQL server 2005 to DB2 Server is sufficient to all SQL server users to access DB2 resources.

1. Install MicroSoft OLE DB provider For DB2 in SQL server 2005.

2. configure as follows:
Start - - -> all programs - - - > MicroSoft OLE DB provider For DB2 - - - > Data Access Tool.
Right click on data sources - - -> New Data Source
In Data Source Wizard - - > Data Source plat form = DB2/MVS or any other appropriate plat form from drop down
Net work type = TCP/IP - - > Next
Address = IP address:xx.xx.xx.xx

Port Number: xxxxxxx - - -> Next
Initial Catelogue = SAMPLE
Package Collection = DB2INST1
Default schema = DB2INST1
Default Qualifier = Leave it blank - - -> NEXT
HOST CCSID = EBCDIC- U.S./Canada[37] or appropriate one
P.C Code Page = ANSI-Latin I[1252] or appropriate one
Process Binary as character = check the box - - -> NEXT
Interactive sign on - - - > select it
Provide login name and password.
Check "Allow Password saving" - - - -> NEXT
Check appropriate boxes like read only etc. - - -> NEXT
Click Connect tab - - -> make sure "Success ful" message is appearing
Example: - "Successfully connected to data source 'DB2-server'.
Server class: DB2
Server version: 8021.00.0000"
- - - -> NEXT
Provide a data source name.(Example: DB2-Server)
Check initialization string option - - - > NEXT
Review completed task list on the window and
Select "FINISH" to complete the work.
The data source which you have added just now(DB2-Server) will be appearing on the grid now.
right click on the data source name and make a note of the path where it has formed
right click on the data source name and click "Display connection string"
cut and paste this connection string on the lower window to note pad for future use.

Start MS SQL server Management studio
Add a fresh linked server in 'SQL Server - - > Server Objects - - -> Linked Server" as follows:
Click Mouse right button on linked server and select "New Linked Server"
linked server = Provide a meaning ful, fully identifiable name for Linked server(Example"DB2-Linux")
Provider = MicroSoft OLE DB provider For DB2
Product name = DB2OLEDB
Data source = IP address

Provider string = Paste the connection string pasted to note pad earlier.
Location = Leave it blank
Catalog = SAMPLE
Click on security on the left side pane
Provide an SQL Server login from the drop down
Do not select check impersonate
Provide DB2 username and password and remote user name and password.
Click OK to save.
You will find the name of liked server appearing below the object Linked Server(Example "DB2-LINUX")

Open a new query window and execute an open query
Example:
SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY("DB2-LINUX", 'SELECT * FROM SAMPLE.DB2INST1.EMPLOYEE')

In the Example "DB2-LINUX" is the name of the linked server
"SAMPLE.DB2INST1.EMPLOYEE" is the name of the table. Sample = name of the db
DB2INST1= name of schema to which the table belongs to
Employee = name of the table

Another Example would be
SELECT empno,FIRSTNME FROM OPENQUERY("DB2-LINUX", 'SELECT * FROM SAMPLE.DB2INST1.EMPLOYEE')

Configure Sql Server 2005 For Remote Hookup?

Nov 15, 2007

Ok. Here is what I need to do: several computers on the intranet need to use a client program to access data from the server (a desktop)

Here is what is going on:

1. I am using Visual Studio 2005 c#.net 2.0
2. Sql Server Express 2005
3. I don't have IIS set up
4. The database is being shared from the c drive on the server (not sophisticated at all, but this is a one man operation!)

Questions:

1. Is IIS an absolute must to make this happen?
2. If not, a user pointed out that I can't use UNF to access the database. How do I set up the connection string to access the db on the server?

This is my basic connection string (local)

connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:MonzaDBMonzaDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True;Asynchronous Processing=true"

Thanks for any help on this subject. I know basically nothing about NETWORK programming and database administration!

How To Configure Filegroups On Multiple Machines - SQL 2005

May 15, 2008

Hi folks,

I am exploring various solutions to setting up a scalable database configuration. To do a proof of concept, I need to setup the database in such a way that the data is partitioned on 2 physical machines.

I looked at distributed partitioned views, which allowed me to create a table on databases residing on two different servers, and then I created distributed view (with appropriate range constraints) that supported distributed selects, joins, updates, and inserts. This seemed to be the solution we were looking for.

However, I ran into a major problem because of the fact that distributed partitioned views don't allow a table to maintain an Identity column with an identity seed.

I did more research and found the Partitioned Table concept that was introduced in SQL 2005. This partitioned table allows us to have a single table which is horizontally partitioned across multiple file groups. This table now is just like a regular table in that it supports the identity column and identity seeds and guarantees index integrity. We were successful in implementing the partitioned table on a single machine, with three filegroups.

Now I need to move these file groups to different physical machines. I have found some articles on adding file group on additional hard disks on the same machine - but nothing to setup a database that is comprised of multiple servers that each handle a part of the data partition.

Is it possible to create a database comprise of filegroups residing on different physical machines?

Thanks.

Cannot Configure SQL Server Express 2005 For Remote Connections

Aug 15, 2006

Hello. I have SQLEXPRESS 2005 installed on my laptop running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have an application that can connect to the local instance with no problem. The other day, I tried to configure SQLEXPRESS 2005 for a remote connection from my desktop. To date, I have been unable to figure out how to do this.

I have followed the instructions posted at various locations on the internet, but to no avail. While I can configure SQLEXPRESS 2005 to allow TCP/IP connections, I have been unable to restart the server.

Here is the pertinent snippet from the error log:

<time> Server A self-generated certificate was successfully loaded for encryption.
<time> Server Error: 26024, Severity: 16, State: 1.
2006-08-14 21:02:27.18 Server Server failed to listen on 'any' <ipv4> 0. Error: 0x277a. To proceed, notify your system administrator.

<time> Server Error: 17182, Severity: 16, State: 1.
<time> Server TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x277a, status code 0x1.
<time> Server Error: 17826, Severity: 18, State: 3.
<time> Server Could not start the network library because of an internal error in the network library. To determine the cause, review the errors immediately preceding this one in the error log.
<time> Server Error: 17120, Severity: 16, State: 1.
<time> Server SQL Server could not spawn FRunCM thread. Check the SQL Server error log and the Windows event logs for information about possible related problems.

I have a feeling this problem is due to the way my system is configured, not necessarily how my SQLEXPRESS 2005 is configured. My laptop and desktop are connected via a wireless router, and both machines are running Norton Anti-Virus 2006. I've added sqlserver.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to the exceptions list for the Worm protection on the laptop, i.e., the server machine. There's not a setting at the router that would prevent the server from re-starting, is there?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Matt

Unable To Configure Database Setup In Reporting Service 2005

Apr 29, 2008

Hi,

I have installed SQL Reporting Service on one server. Using the config tool, I am trying to setup the Reporting Database on a seperate SQL instance. This SQL instance is running on a Clustered SQL 2005 server.

The creation of the Database is sucessful. However when I give the Windows credentials to connect to this database on the same page, I always fail at the following task : Setting Connection Info for Reporting Server. The error message is :

"System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800706B3)
at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo)
at System.Management.ManagementObject.Get()
at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.SetDatabaseConnection(String server, String database, ConfigurationCredentialsType credsType, String userName, String password)"

The Windows Account I am using has Full SQL Rights to the Clustered SQL Server. I have seen other posts on the forums about the 0x800706B3 error, but most of them are related to a problem with RPC.

The Reporting Services account is runing under 'Network Services'. I am not sure if this is causing the problem?

Thoughts anybody?

Thanks,

Mahmood

32-bit To 64 Bit Migration Of SQL Server 2005 (Deployment)

Jul 31, 2006

Hi

Do we need to perform any special checks when we deploy SQL Server application developed using 32 bit SQL 2005 Edition in 64 bit SQL 2005 Edition?

To my understanding, 64 bit SQL Server 2005 provides better memory management and provides high performance when compared to 32 bit and it should not be an issue in deploying the application developed in 32 bit SQL Server 2005 in 64 bit environment.

Any help/hints on deploying in 64 bit SQL Server (for a product[SPs, TSQL Stmts] developed using 32 bit SQL Server) is appreciated.

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL 2005 express version. I was told that in order to upload my database, I need to have.bak file of my database.

The problems are:

1. under my visual studio server explorer, it seems I have two databases, one is ASPNETDB.MDF, another one is (mycomputername)sqlexpress.(databasename).dbo. I dont know from which one I can create the .bak file, and how?

2. I can not find where the phsyical location of my files (such as tables or stored procedures) from my (mycomputername)sqlexpress.(databasename).dbo database.

Trying To Configure Reporting Services SQL 2005 On Windows 2008 Server With IIS7

Apr 21, 2008

Hi,
I have a Windows 2008 server 64-bit SP1 and I have installed SQL 2005 SP2 Enterprise Edition 64-bit. My current version is 9.00.3042.00. I am trying to configure Reporting Services and I am having lots of trouble getting the Application Pools to work properly. I have followed the Microsoft Technet paper 839480 "How to Install and Configure Reporting Services on Windows Server 2008". In the "Configure Reporting Services" part, I have successfully configured everything (all arrows are green) and have the following setup:

Report Server Virtual dir: ReportServer Default Web Site
Report Manager Virtual dir: Reports Defualt Web Site
Windows Service Identity: ReportServer with a service acct login
Web Service Identity:
Report Server: ReportServer,
Report Manager: DefaultAppPool (I get an error when I try to configure it to anything else: ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 800708AC at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.SetWebServiceIdentity(String applicationPool)

The one thing I notice in the SQL Server configuration manager is that there is a red dot next to the SQL Reporting Services services even though the green arrow is there to show it is running.

When I look in IIS7, I see the application pools Reports and ReportServer and they are both in Integrated mode. When I try to go to http://localhost/reportserver, it gives an error. It will work if I change both application pools to classic. But then when I try to go to http://localhost/reports, I get an error:

"REQUEST IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THIS CONTEXT".

I have read up on IIS7 and it says that:
"This error is due to a design change in the IIS7 Integrated pipeline that makes the request context unavailable in Application_Start event. When using the Classic mode (the only mode when running on previous versions of IIS), the request context used to be available, even though the Application_Start event has always been intended as a global and request-agnostic event in the application lifetime."

So, how do I configure these application pools to work using IIS7 with SQL 2005 Reporting Services on a Windows 2008 server? I have tried all kinds of different things based on what I am reading on the net and nothing is working. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Migration From SQL 2000 Enterprise Server To The SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 Bit-Itanium Server)

Dec 20, 2006

We are migration few database from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server)

Problem :

- The performance difference observer was not much (Just 15-18%)

- The CPU Utilization goes to 100% immediately, when the software login screen appears and it sustains in between 90% to 100%

- Multi-User Access (3 or more concurrent users), the sql performance is tremendously slow.

Steps followed for Migration:

- We have used the backup and restore method to migrate the data from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server).

- We ran the DBCC DBREINDEX for each affected tables

- We executed the sp_updatestats procedure for all the tables

- Upgraded the DB compatibility version to 90

- Installed the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server) Service pack 2.

One thing that we observed, was the memory usage, on SQL 2000 the sqlservr.exe uses around 1.5 GB where as on the SQL 2005 its just 120 MB.

A normal select query on 2000 Server took 11-12 sec, having 10 lac records, and the same query on 2005 took 1 min (3-5 sec CPU process taken by sqlservr and rest by the Sever Management Studio.

The only differance noted was that on 2000 the entire data was displayed at one go where as in 2005 the data was displayed at the 1st sec, and was filling the rest in the buffer, and to finally display entire data it took 1 min.

Also

when we run this query

select * from sys.dm_os_sys_info

one column os_priority_class shows a value = 32 ? what does this means.

In the MSSQLSERVER SERVICES, properties, there is a parameter displaying value

Advanced > Running Under 64 bit OS = No ? what does this means.

Could anyone pls suggest as to how to increase the sqlservr.exe memory area, and also how the enhance the performance.

Problem With SQL Server Express 2005 Deployment

Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename
syntax in the connection string.  The first project can attach and connect just fine.  The second project is a windows service that uses the same connection string.  The windows service cannot connect to the DB though.  It looks like it is trying to attach the DB again even though it is already attached.  Shouldn't it only try to attach it if it isn't already attached?  Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'.Cannot attach the file 'C:path' as database 'dbname'.

MS SQL 2005 CE Deployment File Sharing Issue?

Nov 15, 2007

Hello,

I was hoping that someone may be able to help me with an issue that I am having while trying to deploy my projects using MSI. Here is what I am trying to do.

I have two programs that are using MS SQL CE to share information. The first program is a windows service. The second program is a windows application that I am using mainly as a UI for the service. Each program has a seperate MSI setup program. I am using windows vista and VS 2005 on my developement machine.

The issue that I am having is when I deploy the programs. The windows service is working fine. It reads and writes to the database as expected. I know this because when I debug the UI program through VS 2005, I can read and write from the common SQL CE database with no issues. I am also pretty confident in the MSI program for the UI program because if I install the UI program on the developement computer and run the UI program as administrator it runs fine.

The issue arises when I simply open the UI program or when I try to run the UI program on a windows xp sp2 machine. I am no longer able to access the database file. I have tried many diffent things, but so far with no luck. Most of the attempts to fix this so far have been concerning the location of the database file these have had little or no effect. Again if I open the UI program using the right click option of 'Run as Administrator' in windows vista, the problem disappears.

Thanks in advance for any help. Even a push in the right direction would be helpful at this point. I will keep working on this issue, if I find a solution myself I will repost it here.

Upgrade From SQL Server 2005 Express To 2005 Enterprise Fails

Dec 29, 2006

Hi

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.
(As a Preparation to install SQLServer2005 Service Pack 2 (CTP))

I tried to upgrade a particular Instance (OFFICESERVERS, which was based on SQL Server 2005 Express ).

During the upgrade I get a message saying that ...

.....Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules.....

All other components I selected for Installation are propertly installed (Analysis, Reporting)

The setup log contains the following detail information:

I also tried to explicitly upgrade the OFFICESERVERS instance by executing Setup from the command shell:

start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=OFFICESERVERS UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SKUU

The result is the same, i.e.... Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules...

Does anybody know about this problem?

Configure Data Source Insertion Into SQL Server 2005 Database - Express Editions

Sep 12, 2006

I am attempting to insert information from Visual Web Developer 2005 using either the Gridview or Datalist controls into a SQL Server 2005 database and get stuck when defining the custom statement. When I enter the text within the insert tab, the <next> button remains greyed out, preventing me from continuing to the next page.If I copy the same text into the select tab, then I can continue with the wizard, however this raises other problems which may or may not be related (multiple insertions of the data into the SQL Server database table - possibly due to postback functions). I would rather use insert to confirm that my second problem is not because I am using the wrong option. My question is:Should I be able to use the insert function within VWD express or is this only available within the standard/pro editions?

SSRS 2005 Viewing, Connection &&amp; Deployment Errors

May 15, 2008

Hi,

I have an reporting services (SSRS 2005) installed locally and I am trying to access it locally through : http://localhost/reportserver, but all I get back is this page.

localhost/ReportServer - /

Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Version 9.00.3054.00

Also when I try to connect to reporting services through SSMS I get the following error message.

Cannot Connect to Server ServerNameSQL2005

Unable to connect to the remove server (Microsoft.SQLServer.Management.UI.RSClient)

No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it(System).

About my set up, I have SQL Server 2005 (SP2) installed in a named instance called SQL2005, I have reporting services set up to run under local system and I have gone through the RS config tool and everything in there appears to be correct. U double checked in IIS that the report server folder is "ReportServer" and not "ReportServer$SQL2005". I have set up full read write permissions to all the virtual directories, to my domain account which is also a local administrator. The user logs in under windows authentication (marked in the directory security tab in IIS, for the virtual directory & the default website).

Whenever I start the service however I get the following errors in the windows application log:

Report Server (SQL2005) cannot create the trace log C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting ServicesLogFilesReportServer__05_15_2008_10_27_52.log.

&

Report Manager cannot create the trace log C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting ServicesLogFilesReportServerWebApp__05_15_2008_10_27_07.log.

Also I am unable to deploy my SSRS 2005 project from BI studio with more errors, I get the following exception thrown in a windows. (I am trying to deploy to the root "ReportServer" folder, not a sub folder.

A connection could not be made to the report server http://localhost/reportserver.

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1)
error: CS2001 "Source File "C:WindowsTempc-zsc7th.0.cs" could not be found.....

I don't have sharepoint installed, I do have the dashboard designer for Performance Point Server 2007 installed though.

I have been on this thing for hours, I have tried appending "$SQL2005" on to the end, stopping and starting RS Service multiple times. Change all the permssions in IIS so that the user can full control over the IIS virutal directory. I am at a loss at what else I could try.

Any Idea's?

Thanks!!
