Newbie Trying To Connect To Adventure Works Db On Local Desktop

I'm running Windows Xp Pro With SQL 2005 Dev edition with Adventure Works sample db installed. I am the local administrator on my desktop, the services are up and running and I specified local connections only since this is the DEV edition of SQL05.
When I try either one of these connection strings: Data source=(SQLDEV05); initial catalog=AdventureWorks or Data source=(local); initial catalog=AdventureWorks.
I receive this error message:

I'm new to the whole DB thing so I wanted to start off easy and download SQL Express. That part worked fine so I tried to install the Adventure Works DB to get some practice using the SQL commands. The problem is every time I click on a table in Adventure Works and choose Open Table I get a Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio box that pops up. The error says: Class Not Registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))

Error When Attaching Adventure Works Database
Oct 14, 2006Hello Everyone,
I am very new to SQL and just completed an install of SQL 2005 Express. After install, I downloaded the Adventure Works database and attempted to attach through both the Object Browser (right-click 'Databases'--->'Attach') and by running the script that is located on the SQL download page where I got the Adventure Works db.
Here's the error that I get:
"Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 8, object ID 1, Index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes."
I have attempted to go through the help files, but unfortunately the above message is too cryptic for me and I have no idea what it's telling me.
Can someone help?

DB Design :: Row Guid In Adventure Works Database?
May 19, 2015I was studying the Adventure Works database because I read it contains good examples of best practices.
It has an ID column for each table that is auto-incrementing Primary Key. There is also a row guid which seems redundant since the ID PKs are identity columns that increment automatically and should be unique in a given table.
What is the purpose of the row guid being used in conjunction with the ID which should be unique in a given table?

Sep 14, 2015I am trying to create a Adventure Works Tabular cube in my developing machine and im having problems deploying the tabular cube (the DW database was firstly attached without problems)
So I'm having problems processing Adventure Works Tabular Cube, the problems are somewhere between SSAS project configuration and running privileges, i think. I'll describe exactly where i am:
- in SSMS 2012, connections, tables and roles and roles are empty, i only have the full name of the database when I try to process i get an error "the table with id of "product category 92583829......", Name of Product Category refereced by the model Cube, does not exist. Instead Of Trigger - Works In Mgment Console But Fails In Live Test
Feb 4, 2008Hi, I wasn't sure if this was the correct place for this question since it involves both T-SQL and ODBC but i thought I would start here. A little system information to start. I'm using SQL 2005 on a Windows 2003 server. An application is connection to my database through ODBC and adds records to a table one at a time (no batches).
I have an Instead of Trigger created on a table that tests for the existence of a valid foriegn key. If the key doesn't exist in the related table I want to insert the record into a "bad records" table.
My trigger works perfectly when I add a bogus record to the table directly in the SQL Management Console table view or thorugh an insert query. However, when I try a live test with an application connected via ODBC that is adding records to the table the trigger fails to catch the errors and will not update the "bad records" table. If a record is legitmate (i.e. has a valid foreign key) then the final bit of trigger code fires without a problem.
Does anyone know of a problem with Instead Of Triggers working on multiple tables when connection through ODBC? It just seems weird that the trigger works perfectly in one situation but then doesn't work in another.

Can't Connect To Remote Server, My App Works In Local Only???

i've developed a website using VB.NET, and SQL SERVER 2K, in my dev environment works properly (SQL Server and WEB SERVER are in the same machine).
When i put everything in the target machine, where the webserver is but not the sql, i get the following error:
Sql SErver does not exist or access denied
I've tried so many ways to do this, ODBC, ADO.NET, OLEDB.....and everything ends in the same error.
Also if i try to connect with ODBC (from odbc manager) it seems to work (test connection succesfull), but in asp.net nothing works.
I've tried to access the server with:
INSTANCE_NAME
SERVER_NAMEINSTANCE_NAME
IP,PORT
I think (they are checking this), that the auth mode is set to MIXED MODE.
Any idea to save my life?? ;)

Right click and choose "Add Connection..."2. Data Source was "Microsoft SQL Server Database File". Click OK.3. I browse to the database in the MSSQL.2/MSSQL/Data folder.4. ODBC Connect Times Out, But 2nd Time Works
Oct 19, 2000When I begin Enterprise Manager and open a connection to a Server, it fails with a timeout error. But if I do a refresh and then connect again, it immediately works.
I have had similar symptoms setting up a data source for ODBC. When you initially logon to SQL Server to define the connection it times out. But then if you immediately try again it succeeds.
Furthermore one of my application programs fails to work (due to the timeout) on systems that have this behavior.
I have had these symptoms occur on 2 diferent workstations, but other workstations access the SQL Server with no problem.
All systems are WinNT 4.0; the engine is SQL Server 7 with SP2. The timeout is defined as 15 seconds so should be long enough.
Does anyone know what is going on, or how to fix it?
SSAS Database Mangement Issue ??

I am not too sure what to do in this scenario.
1. I create a SSAS solution using BIDS and deploy it successfully.
2. I use management studio to add a role for security reasons so that only certain users can process a cube.
3. Now if i open the solution in BIDS and make a change and try to deploy i get a message that the databases are out of sync.
Now i know this is because the ssas database has changed because i added a role in management studio.
Documentation i have found says that i simply open a new project and import the Analysis Services Dataabase.
I have done this however you have to give the project a new name and then if you deploy the project the database name name changes, so you cant really make changes to an exisiting Analysis database.
What am i missing here ?
I need to use Management Studio for admin changes to the SSAS DB, but if i do i can no longer open it is BIDS without this issue ?
I am sure there is a better way to do this ?

Jul 13, 2006Can the Server Management Studio Express be installed on a machine without SQL Server Express?
I have a machine that I use daily that I need to access a remote instance but there is not a need (or space) to fully install SQL Server onto the local machine - all I need is the management tool.
I tried installing it but the process errors out, saying a pre-requisite (MSXML6) isn't found. It refers me to a site with all the different SQL Server downloads.
All I need is the management tool on this machine. Is there a way to do it?
Tried loading "MOM" but it doesn't show up either

Does MS SQL Server Express offer a Server Console that lets the database to be accessed via SQL queries, please?

Apr 5, 2007We installed SQL Server 2005 x64 on a server for our client here at our office. We can't connect to it using Enterprise Manager. I'm assuming we need to install the management console because of the differences in 2000 and 2005. The install is for a x64 and our workstations are x32. Do I need to get a media kit for a x32 because the x64 install won't work. Where can I get the install for the x32 Management console and will this work?

My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.
The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:

Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.
This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.
This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.
I can ping the server
I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled
I do not have any aliases set up
No I do not force encryption
I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?

May 17, 2008Ok so I managed finally to get an Excel Spreadsheet to connect as a linked server.

Now I am not sure exactly how to go about querying to pull the data into a table.
The table I want to set will have three columns:

item_prc_2 DECIMAL(9,2))
the columns in the EXCELLINK linked server spreasdsheet are named the same as the columns above. Once the table is created how do I use the linked server to import the data?

Any Documentation On SQL Server State Icons Shown In MMC Console?
Feb 8, 2000Does anyone know of any place I can find documentation on the meanings of the SQL Server state icons displayed in the MMC console for SQL Server 7.0? My server is showing the green running icon but also a vertical red squiggly line. I do not know what this red squiggly line means, and it concerns me. The databases all seem fine, and everything seems to be working, i just have this feeling like something bad is impending and I cannot find anything that tells me what it might be. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oct 5, 2006This is the weirdest this I have ever seen in a long time. I have MS SQL Server running on a server and use Enterprise Manager a lot. Well, the damndest thing happens when I log onto the server from the console and run Enterprise Manager. If I go into Enterprise Manager, and go to a database and then select a table and right-click, and run the "Open Table" option; the entire Enterprise Manager application mysterously closes.
This only happens from the server console and through Remotely Anywhere...it does not happen when I log onto the server from Remote Desktop.
Has anyone ever seen this before? Does anyone know a fix for this?

SQL Server Express 2005 Managment Console Not Logging In

We have a machine with SQL Server 2005 Express installed and we use to have no problems connecting to this using the management studio using Windows Authentication. Since yesterday when we open the management studio and press connect using Windows authentication, the logon dialog remains active but does not disappear. In the backgroung I can see the name of the instance on the machine and after a few seconds it goes to green, to show its connected but I can't do anything without cancelling the logon. If I cancel the logon, it sets it is not connected to any server, if i try to launch the instance from the registered servers, with the green connected symbol it hangs.
I have left the logon dialog overnight (14 hours) and it still did not disappear. I am looking at any patches that may have been installed but none since the end of May...does anyone else have a similar problem?
