How To Copy Data From Backup Or Data Files To New SQL Installation?
Dec 10, 2005
Hi,
I have(had) an old Win2k Server server with about 30 web site databases
(SQL 2000) that just went under due to hardware problems. Thankfully, I
have backups of all the databases plus the MDF and LDF files from the
hard drive.
I want to move all of these sites and their data to a newer server
(Win2003) running SQL2000.
What's the best way to copy the database from the old server hard drive
(now mounted as an extrnal drive to a local machine; I'm currently
FTPing all of the web site directories from it to the new server)?
Just upload the original data to the new server and then mount the MDF
and LDF files within the new SQL server? Or do I restore the backup
files in the new SQL2000?
All of my previous data migrations have been DTS operations from one
live server to another, so no experience with either of the above
scenarios. I'll certainly have a lot more experience at one of them by
the time this weekend is through.
I copied a database using backup and restore from Sql server 2000 to Sql server 2005. I noticed the data(mdf) and log(ldf) files did not copy. when I try to do a copy and past it gives me an error: cannot copy lof: it is being used by another person or program. Close all programs and try again. Does this mean I have to stop both servers to copy between them? Please help.

40 subsribers. Adding new article. On any aubscribe need regenerate snapshot agent agent. The tables are very big. With filters. Regenerating process anew copy data in in ...ReplDataame.bcp, during 30-40 minutes for any subscriber! Full work to small correct of replication flow during 2-3 days....
Is it possible to initialize subscription without copying bcp data?
I am using Bulk Copy command for Exporting data table wise from database to csv files and it was working fine. Since last 3-4 days when exporting for some tables data in csv file is coming junk.
I've an emergency requirement to copy Source server database backup files to destination Server through xcopy command. Backup job on source server runs daily, so once this job get completes all databases backups needs to be moved to destination server. But here the main concern is "the backup files on destination server shouldn't be overwritten, they should be placed separately as Source server job runs daily".
We've a command which overwrites backups on destination server. But we need to keep backups on destination at-least for 4 weeks (means : retention should be 4 Weeks).
We're new users of SQL Server 2005. I created two maintenance plans...one to backup the database at 2 AM daily and one to back up transaction logs every 30 minutes. These maintenance plans write to a local disk. What we want to do, within the maintenance plan, is copy the files as soon as they are written to a remote server. Is that possible?
We are having a problem with trying to backup the database device and log DAT files located in the MSSQLData directory. The Seagate Backup Exec. states that the files are busy and skips them during its backup cycle. It skips all the devices in the directory.
Can anyone provide an expample of bulk copying XML data to a SQL table. I am also looking at using column mapping so that I can map fields and also insert a new GUID into the key of the SQL table. Many thanks
Hello all. Before my arrival at my current employer, our consultantsphysically set up our MSSQL 7 server as follows:drive c: contains the mssql enginedrive d: contains the transaction logdrive e: contains the data filesNo filegroups were set up and the data files consist of only 1 largephysical file. Currently, our data file is >10GB. When I was trained onthe physical aspects of sqlserver, I was told to never create physical files> 2048MB each. If I did, I could expect inefficient physical storage ofdata and slower performance (due to the OS).Our server has 2 RAID-5 arrays. Drive c: and e: are located on the firstarray and drive d: on the second. We're running Windows 4.0 NT Server SP6with NTFS.Can someone comment on the use of 1 single large data file vs. more smallerdata files?
I have an MVC asp.net application that stores many records in a table on sql server, in its own system. used the system for 2 months, worked fine accessing, changing data.
Now that other users are logging in? there is cross coupling going on. one user gets the data from another users sql search.
In the mvc app it had used the get async method to read the ID record from the db, i set that to synchronous. no effect; the user makes their own login id but that does nt matter either.
i am really in need of help. i have a text file consiting of some data.i want to update my database from that text file periodically say 12 hours.the text file is being updated by another server program in every 12 hours can any one help me in this case? i am lost for this scenario?? help me please.....
I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.
Hi! I did: alter database mydb set single_user with rollback immediate; exec sp_detach_db @dbname='mydb', @keepfulltextindexfile='true';
then I tried to copy files to new location on other drives, same server but got >>Cannot copy <myfile>: Access is denied Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use<<
I also tried rename of file without success. I also tried with db service stoppet (not preferred) without success.
How to find out, which process locks the files? Best regards
I need to copy data from warehouse tables to master tables of different SQL instances. Refresh need to done once in an hour. What is the best way to do this? SQL agent jobs or SSIS packages?
I have an sql 6.5 server that has had it OS (nt4.0) reinstalled on c:. sql was installed on d: and all of the dat files are still there, i need to recover data from one of these, i tried install on a new machine and creating a device/db with same name and then over writing the file with the old one but enterprise manager shows it as suspect and will not let me work on it. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I have a database with two data files configured under primary filegroup. Both the files are set to grow automatically till the disk space is full and both the data files are in the same drive on same physical disk. When the transactions are happening in the database, how the data is getting distributed on both data files? Will the transactions is inserted in to the primary data file first and once that is full it will start occupying the secondary data file?. How this distribution is happening?
Using SQL Server 2005 Server Management Studio, I attempted to back up a database, and received this error:
Backup failed: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Backup and file manipulation operations (such as ALTER DATABASE ADD FILE) on a database must be serialized. Reissue the satement after the current backup or file manipulation is completed (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

Backup Options were set to:

I am fairly new to SQL 2005. Can someone help me get past this issue? What other information do I need to provide?
If my backup starts at 8PM and take 1 hour to complete, will the changes made to the database during that hour be captured in the full backup?
Stated another way, will my backup be a snapshot of: a) 8PM when the backup started b) 8PM with some of the changes made between the hour c) 9PM when the backup finished?
Anybody know the exact way SQL Server handles that logic?
I'm looking to schedule a maintenance plan for my databases which I have done.I'd like this database to be copied to another folder and the name altered to include the file name and the current date time stamp. Is this possible in the scheduled maintenance plan?
Hi! I'm using replication with two database on SQL 2000,when begin, the log files size is 50mb and the data files size is 150mb. But now the log files size is 2Gb and the data files size is 4Gb. i have a claims_tbl that i am inserting into with claim information, the tbl contains a claim_seq number that i want to copy over to a user_info_tbl at the same time insert user information below is what i have tried with no luck insert into user_info(claim_seq) select Max(claim_seq) from claim_tbl update user_info set lname =upper(@lname), fname =upper(@fname), mname =upper(@mname), personnel = @personnel, p_position =upper(@position)where claim_seq = (Select Max(claim_seq) from user_info) i am getting duplicate rows of information ..........can someone help
there is a database with an table x and I want a copy of that in my testdatabase.
I am pretty sure, that I have done that the whole last week, but it's not working anymore.
I thinkt, that last time I used a statement like that to copy the table with structure and all.
insert into dbtest.dbo.x select * from db.dbo.x
Today it's only telling me, that the destinationtabel x is not present. The table has about 100 fields and I swear, I didnt create it by hand in the testdatabase, I'm definitely too lazy for that. I can't use the enterprise manager, I only can use sql.
There are still tables in my testdatabase, I copied last week. So what is wrong with my insert into?
All, Does anyone have amethod for copying db(all tables, procs etc..) but without the data. Scripting is not feasible because of number of objects constraints ..etc...
I am trying to copy item names from one database to another if they share the same code number. e.g.
UPDATE TABLE1 SET NAME = DB2.TABLE2.NAME WHERE CODE = DB2.TABLE2.CODE
I dont know how to specify the second db as using a '.' here doesnt seem to work. I have also tried '..' and DB2.dbo.TABLE2 but get the same error - 'The column prefix 'Train_DB_FinancialsProd.dbo.ITEM_DEFINITIONS' does not match with a table name or alias name used in the query.'
I have checked that the spelling is ok so not sure why it doesnt work.
I have also tried using a temp db in between to copy the values across then try to update from the temp table but couldnt make that work either. e.g.
create table #tdhname ( code char(50), name char(100) )
INSERT INTO #tdhname (code,name) select distinct code,name from Train_DB_FinancialsProd..item_definitions tritm where code = tritm.code and tritm.ittyp_refno = 241
update pharmacy_items set name = #tdhname.name <----- THIS DOESNT WORK where #tdhname.code = code

Help!!! I am trying to consolidate 5000 odd databases. Each database contains hundreds of tables. The tables in each database are identical to the tables in all of the other databases. Sounds simple doesn't it? However, SSIS has defied every trick that I have applied to this task including changing connectionstrings at run time through package configuration. has anyone out there ever tackled a similar challenge?. Please let me know
It works remotely if I run it via command prompt. But when I add this to a TSQL job on my remote SQL instance, it runs without deleting anything. What I'm missing?
I am wondering if it is possible to use SSIS to sample data set to training set and test set directly to my data mining models without saving them somewhere as occupying too much space? Really need guidance for that.
