How To Create A Login Userid And Password For Ms SQL Server 2005 Express?
Oct 30, 2007
My PC is Window XP Pro and I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express and Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express.
My question is how to create a login userid and password under "SQL Server Authentication"? (as shown in http://www.findingsteve.net/print_screen.jpg)
Any tutorial about this I can read?

SQL Server 2005 Express keeps putting in a different password than the one I chose. I would check the properties on the login I want to change. Then I change the password and it gets accepted. When I try my web application, I get the dreaded "login failed for <loginname>". I look at the properties again and see my password never change. Is this a bug? I ever tried this syntax to no avail:
CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<mypassword>' CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF

I have installed on my PC Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition which installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. In addition I downloaded and installed SQL Server Management Studio Express(SSME).
Now using SSME I can connect into SQL server express with the default login that was created by the installation. I want to create a new login:
Right click on Security > New > Login
I filled in all the details. However, when I click OK I get the following error:
Create failed for Login 'Mauriceewlogin'. Windows NT user or group 'Mauriceewlogin' not found. Check the name again.
Please, help. I am getting fraustrated with this error.
Thanks.

I am using SQL Server 2005 at home.
My problem is I forgot my password to log in to my server.
I only remember user name is 'sa'.
I haven't used it for two to three months. So I forgot password.
Previously, When I used sql server 2000, my login is as windows login. so no problem.
But this time, I set seperate log in and I got this problem.
Any help will be appreciated.

Help!!
I used to have an Access database which had tables for users, roles, actions etc.
This was used by a C++ client app (using ADO) which logged in, got the user ID and password (by raising a login dialog ) and then checked these against a user table and then assigned the roles and possible actions.
Now we have SWL Server Express 2005 - NT Authorisation - how do I get/pass the user ID to the C++ Application so it can get the associated roles? Seems silly to have 2 logins.
Better still can I do away with the App's User table or make its password column invisible to all users bar Admin and the C++ App?

Please Help!!
We have an application using SQLOLEDB connection to a SQL Server 2005 database. Per domain policy, the users are required to change their password every 60 days.
The accounts are established to 'Enforce password policy'.
When we try to execute the 'ALTER LOGIN' command to change the password, locks are being established and will not free the account without bouncing the instance.
After issuing the command, any interaction with the server using this UserID results in a "lock request time out" error 1222.
I have tried issuing this command using both the application and through SQLServer Mgmt Studio Express and the results are the same.
Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Could anybody explain: is following supposed to work:
CREATE LOGIN test
WITH PASSWORD=0xF1E9E5CA9A79F7B5D883FA4D9680ED1D4D9AAB12 HASHED,
CHECK_POLICY = OFF;
GO
where
0xF1E9E5CA9A79F7B5D883FA4D9680ED1D4D9AAB12
result of
SELECT HASHBYTES ('SHA1','$Test123#')
execution of 'create login' results in following error
Msg 15021, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Invalid value given for parameter PASSWORD. Specify a valid parameter value.
Interesting enough is that if I use MD5 the hash is 8 bytes shorter and create login works but actual login procedure does not. And if I just use plain text password without HASHED everything works.
This is on sqlexpress 2005 sp2. Is this specific to express version?
I've noticed that realatively old SQL BO 2005 states that hashed password should be passed as literal in single quotations ' *** ' (and it does not work) and msdn online states that in case of HASHED hexadecimal value should be passed without single quotations, anyway does not work either ...
Thanks,

BOL is very terse on the subject of creating a login with a hashed password. I need to store a script file with a create login for a sql server login, and I don't want the password as plain text. Here is what I've tried:
Code Snippet
declare @input nchar(5), @output varbinary(8000)
set @input = N'A123b'
select @output = hashbytes('sha1', @input)
select @output
create login test with password = '0x22A9EA652CFC38938D56A9C3872B266B192D16D9' hashed
go
This returns the error:
Msg 15021, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Invalid value given for parameter PASSWORD. Specify a valid parameter value.
Can anybody provide a working example? Am I way off base on the usage of this functionality?
Thanks,
John T

We have a need to have separate password policies for different groups of logins. For example: Those IDs that have greater privileges should be rquired to have more complex passwords that expire more frequently than IDs with lesser privileges.
It appears to me that SQL Server pulls the password policy from the default Active Directory domain group. Is there a way to create/utilize multiple policies for SQL Server authenticated IDs?
Thanks for your assistance.

I use DTSRun /Uuserid /Ppassword /Sservername .... in a batch process.
I always get the error message to run with a trusted connection. I can run the same batch process from a command line under my own domain id and it runs as if it had a trusted connection.
Will DTSRun run only with a trusted connection? Do I need to set something in the package to get SQL Server to run with a userid and password? Why does it always default to using a trusted connection. I need to know what I have to set to tell it that I am using a userid and password. I have included an example of how it's coded in the BAT file.
Example:
DTSRun /S"myserver" /Umyuser /Pmypass /N"Load_Data" /L "c:mylogsLoad_Data.log" /W"0"

During an install of SQL Server 2005 Express setting the sa password does not work consistently. The install is being run as administrator and I am using an .ini file to pass the settings,
SECURITYMODE=SQL
ADDLOCAL=ALL
SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=1
SQLAUTOSTART=1
INSTANCENAME=DBSERVER
SAPWD=Westtech#1
and while most times it works correctly, occasionally, maybe 4 out of 10 times it fails to set the password and I have been unable to find any warnings or errors in the logs it generates.
We are coming up on release and this is causing us some real problems. Does anyone have any ideas, something I could look at?

Hey guys,
I'm having a problem making a new login inside the sql management studio, the problem is, when i create a new login, i selected SQL Authentication, then type a password, then uncheck Enforce password policy.
i then select the database i want the login to be associated with, but once i click ok i get this exception:
Create failed for Login ''. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)
"An object or column name is missing or empty. For SELECT INTO statements, verify each column has a name. For other statements, look for empty alias names. Aliases defined as "" or [] are not allowed. Add a name or single space as the alias name. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1038)
I even tried with Northwind and a brand new database with a table and 2 columns but it's the same story every time.
Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch

Reason to do so is, user with Login having sysadmin previliage can acess all databases in SQL server.
so just want to restrict database access to only those users who knows the password.

I have two applications added to a single solution. A Web application and a ClassLibrary which contains the Unit Tests. From the ClassLibrary I am trying to open the SQL SERVER 2005 Express Database. The database is in the App_Code directory of the Web Application folder. I have added the App.config file in my class library which has the following credentials. <connectionStrings> <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=MYSERVER;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;User Id=AZAMSHARP;Password=mypassword;"/> </connectionStrings>Now, when I run the test: [Test] public void CanOpenDatabaseConnection() { string connectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString; SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(connectionString); myConnection.Open(); Assert.AreEqual(myConnection.State, ConnectionState.Open); myConnection.Close(); }It throws the Exception: ThingsTODOTestApps.SqlConnectionFixture.CanOpenDatabaseConnection : System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException : Login failed for user 'AZAMSHARP'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.I tried the same connectionString with the WebApps and it worked fine and displayed the results. Any ideas! PS: AZAMSHARP is my windows authentication account.

I currently have a login page in asp.net 2.0 linked to a SQL 2005 database table that holds the usernames and passwords. At present, I am on an "honor system" where I do have access to the passwords of the other users but would like to change it so that I cannot know what the users' passwords are. Thank goodness that there is no personal information within the pages and the logins were created to keep a log of who logs in and what not. However, I would like to soon hold more personlized information, hence the need to encrypt each user's password even from myself.
I have read up on Symmetric Encryption for SQL 2005 but I would like to know if there is anything else available, any good proven methods that someone else has already tried.
Also, while testing out Symmetric Encryption, I noticed that I have to supply the encryption password for the decryption. However, if I know what the password for the encryption/decription is, does it not defeat the purpose of having the encryption at all, in terms of the "Admin" having access to sensitive information? Just curious if I understood the concept correctly or not.
Thanks in advance to all.

Short version - how can I create a server login for a remotely connected machine on a simple 2 computer XP home network connected via router?
Long version - I'm doing an Access-SQL Migration. I used the migration assistant (which creates DSN-less linked tables) to convert the data to SQL Server, and now I'm at the point of making all of the modifications to my Access front end so that the two play nice.
I have SQL Express running on my laptop. I would like to do the Access work on my desktop because a) I can work faster with the fullsize keyboard and b) the install at my client's location will include users hitting the database over their network and I'd like to simulate that while I'm making the modifications.
My Access front-end works 100% fine on my laptop. The Access front end will NOT connect when I run it on my desktop.
My guess is that this is due to not having a server login or DB user associated with the account on my desktop machine. In view of that, I'm trying to create those items on my server.
So, I open SSMS on the laptop and try to create a Server login. Under "Login Name:" I enter "DesktopAccountName" and it fails saying "Windows NT user or group 'DesktopAccountName' not found. Check the name again."
If I click the "Search" button next to "Login Name:" The only "Location" that I'm given is "LAPTOP" and that's greyed out preventing me from changing it.
Both machines are running XP home. My network is simply called "Home" if that means anything.

Hi,
In MySQL,
"GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'root'@'192.168.1.1' IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword' WITH GRANT OPTION;"
This gives the permission to 'root' user from '192.168.1.1'. Another user or another ip couldn't connect to this server.
In SQL Server 2005 Express, can I implement like above query statement?

I just spent the better par of 3 days creating a prototype in ASP.Net 2.0 and SQL Server Express only to discover that nobody from outside can see it...

All --
Please help.
I have some questions about connection strings.
BACKGROUND...
Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005.
Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string.
Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference.
Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.
QUESTIONS...
(A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean?
(B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string?
(C) Are there any alternatives?
(D) What do you suggest?
Please advise.
Thank you.
