I think this might be a good place to ask the following question.
I am writing the error handling code for my data access layer for a web application. I am using the Enterprise Library Data Access Application Block. Although this supports generic database connections, I realized that I need to handle errors specific to each database type. Microsoft SQL is the only database type I am using for now, so I am using a try...catch (SqlException e).
In testing my code, I intentionally changed the instance name in web.config to a name that does not exist. I get the very popular error 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified. This is returned as a SqlException, but the SqlError.Number property is set to -1.
Am I getting "-1" because the provider hasn't actually connected to SQL yet, so it doesn't have an actual SQL error number?
Can I assume that (SqlError.Number == -1) is always a fatal, provider-level connection exception?
Will the provider ever use another SqlError.Number of its own? Or do all numbers besides -1 come from the SQL sysmessages table?.
Is there a comprehensive list of what exceptions might be raised by the SqlClient provider, including #26?
The reason for all the questions is that in a web application, I want to prevent the end-user from seeing the "real" exception if it has to do with configuration errors. However, maybe there are other errors that the user should see and handle? It's hard to know without a full list of SqlClient provider errors, along with the SqlError.Number that each error maps to.

Diffcult Is Issue, How To Add A Row Of Data For A Customer That Has No Data For A Month
May 23, 2008Ok i dont know how to ask this question but here it goes.
I am pulling monthly data for suppliers showing ontime, early and late deliveries
let say month of Jan. they had
supplier month stat qty
A Jan early 5
A Jan late 1
A Jan ontime 20
A feb late 50
A feb ontime 5
I need to retrieve the data but as you can see since feb did not have any early I am missing the data
how can I create a line
A feb early 0
but remember that i have multiple customers and multiple months.
All I can think of is saveing the base data then run a cursor to inser the lines as needed

The query below gets me close but it gives me gives me one row for each customer. So if I have 5 customers with the same group code, I get 5 rows for that group code. I need to modify it or come up with a different approach that gives me only one row for each GroupCode.

How To Debug Data Flow Task?
Nov 6, 2007How can I debug data flow task. From this article (http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3567961) and this video (http://www.jumpstarttv.com/Media.aspx?vid=3) I found that when we are executing the task, the data count will be shown along with color coded task but when I debug the package, no count is shown. I have SQL and source and flat file as destination. There is nothing stored in the destination file but the sql script returns the data.

Bug? Wrong Count In The Data Flow Task In Debug Mode
Mar 10, 2008I just had this happen twice in a row. The data flow task is showing a number of records almost twice as high as the actual data that is going into the table. This happened to me in two different DFT's with different data.
I am using an OLEDB source which uses a query something like:
select * from functiona()
In the DataFlowTask I see it had around 400,000 Rows go through the path all the way to the deastionation..
However I know that isn't right. If I do:
select count(*) from functiona() I get 200000 rows. Now the weird thing is if I check the table that it inserted to, it has the right number of rows, 200,000. (Numbers are not exact).
Anyone else had this happen?

Using Teradata .NET Data Provider As Data Source
May 15, 2006Recently I installed the .NET data provider for Teradata.
In a regular C# application I can add the namespace, "using
Teradata.Client.Provider;" to connect to this data provider
directly without going though ODBC or OLD DB so I know it works.
However, when I open Reporting Services (new project -> Business Intelligence
Projects) I do not see how to add the Teradata .NET provider. I only
see the same standard data types as before. I have searched and I do
not see how to add the Teradata .NET provider to the available "Type"
list when you click €œAdd New Data Source€? to your report.

We have 4 client machine and 1 server machine, that server have all the sql server 2005 database€™s.
A project developed from client1 with Asp.net 2005 now I need to access that project from client2 so I type http://My Ip address/Folder Name/home.aspx in my browser here when the sql connection is open(SqlConnection.Opn()) then I meet this problem

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. We just changed the dev environment to sqlagent. From then we were unable to see the reports on the report server because:
An error has occurred during report processing.
Cannot create a connection to data source 'IHRSDataSource'.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
this error is cropping up.
To Resolve this issue, we checked the Surface Area Configuration and also checked the Reporting Service Configuration . There seem to be no problem and everything looks ok.
Please help me in resolving this issue.

hi all
I realised this has been done to death, and so much information out there but I am still in a quandry.
I have had to rebuild my computer.
This is what I did
XP machine
using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
using Windows Authentication
NZ6(MSSQLSERVER)
straight default install all the way
unfortunately when ready to run reports from my instance(computer)
I received the error as in provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server
thought I had it all okayed but obviously something not right
so ended up unistalling then - did the following:
Load SQL Server from disc1 and start install
failed on alter Counter Registry key error
fixed this from KB article (known error that can happen)
restarted
Went to Windows Update
check IIS is installed - tick is on - IIS - admin tools - make sure asp2 is associated - yes ok
Then back to install sql server - there is no instance set up yet
Disk 2 and setup .exe
All ok on Reporting Services, Analysis etc.
But once again all seems fine but still getting the error:
connection is all fine in Management Studio - eg I can see tables etc
connection is all fine in Business Intelligence - eg I can preview my reports
I then can deploy up to - NZ6
open NZ6
eports
report is there fine - but just errors
some simple little tick that I have not done!!
I seem to have checked and rechecked everything and obviously doing another re-install does not seem a logical step from here.
I will continue to check but if someone jump in and advise please would be great.

I have tried a bunch of stuff, but so far nothing has worked.
The following code is is question:

any help would be appreciated......could I run this with cscript.exe (in the WoW64 folder) in through cmd.exe?

ASP .Net Data Provider
Mar 7, 2008I am currently learning ASP.Net and am having problems with my SQL Server database. I am using the ASP.NET Configuration Provider tab to setup AspNetSqlProvider as the provider but i get the error 'Could not establish a connection to the database.' So I then went to the Aspnet_regsql.exe tool to install the database elements on my local PC. I use Windows Authentication to connect and enter the server name and <default> database but it fails with error 'Unable to connect to SQL Server database'. But i can logon to the SQL Server 2005 using the same user. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

It says the following:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is my con string :

Oct 22, 2006I am getting the following error when i try to connect to the my web site using froma different server. A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) i am using sql express and i attach the database through the connection string in the web config. Any ideas

I am trying to use the new ListView control in VS2008 in an ASP.Net app. My problem starts already with the datasource. I drag and drop a SqlDataSource and select
Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 (.NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5)
I can connect to the database and test the query in the wizard (I do not need to use a password??)
This is the webconfig entry

I add the following line in the page load event
AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetData("SQLServerCompactEditionUnderWebHosting", true);
However I get the error message that the data provider cannot be found and it might not be installed. I added the reference and also gave the folder above ASP.NET full access rights.
Anyone else encountered this problem. It is quiet strange? Thanks a lot for your help.

May 23, 2006I created a membership database on my local computer. DB is SQL Server 2005. I created create sripts for that database and created this database in a SQL Server 2000 instance on another box.As soon as I changed my web.config file
to point to the new database, I got this error below. What is causing

Custom Log Provider Type Not Recognized As A Valid Log Provider

I have written a custom log provider derived from LogProviderBase. I want to programmtically add the custom log provider to my package, but when I try this:
myPackage.LogProviders.Add("ACustomLogProvider");
I get the following exception:
"The log provider type "ACustomLogProvider" specified for log provider "{..GUID..}" is not recognized as a valid log provider type. This error occurs when an attempt is made to create a log provider for unknown log provider type. Verify the spelling in the log provider type name".
I have followed the instructions in BOL and as suggested in this forum, adding the DtsLogProvider attribute:
[DtsLogProvider(DisplayName="ACustomLogProvider", LogProviderType="ACustomLogProvider", Description="a description")]
Another way I tried is that I added a GUID attribute to my custom log provider class and then tried this:
Type aType = typeof(ACustomLogProvider);
Guid aGUID = (Guid)aType.GUID;
myPackage.LogProviders.Add("{"+ aGUID.ToString() +"}");
This also gives me the same exception "The log provider type ""{..the actual GUID for ACustomLogProvider..}" specified for log provider "{..a different GUID..}" is not recognized as a valid log provider type....
My questions are: Is it possible to add a custom log provider programmtically or must it be done through the SSIS Designer?
Must I deploy my custom log provider class for it to work programmatically? (I had perhaps wrongly assumed I would not have to deploy if I don't want it to show up in the SSIS Designer).
I would prefer to use a custom log provider instead of just logging within the SSIS event handlers because I can override the OnPostExecute, etc. but I cannot (can I?) override the specific event handlers like PackageStart, PackageEnd, etc because they are not exposed through DTSEvents.
Any help I would be very grateful for. Thanks.

I have an ODBC connection setup for Oralce RDB. This works fine in say MSAccess. Now I would like to add a SQL Server Linked Server to this ODBC driver (it is for RDB not regular Oracle), but I am not able to get this to work. What is the Provider String and Location / Catalog for using this type of ODBC? I setup DSN as 'name', Provider String as 'UID=user;PWD=pass;' and it seems it tries to connect but gives an error. "%SQL-F-SCHNOTDEF, Schema USER is not defined"
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Performance Sqlclient Data Provider
Dec 12, 2005Well, I hope, after my endless search in the web... maybe, somebody can help me here.I'm passing a application to a web-based application, therefore I have to use ADO.net to access a sql server DB. But the performance is extremly poor!!!!Just to compare: with the normal application or with the SQL Query Analyzer, the query needs about 2 seconds. Well, by using ado.net, it's about 200 seconds......!!!!Of course, the query is quite long. But the difference is extrem... too extrem for using the same query....I already tried a lot... actually everything I found on the web. What is really strange is that neither the processor nor the memory is fully used... And the web server use more of the cpu power than the sql server itself (the 2 server are still on my machine where I'm programming). So, could it be that the problem is by filling up the dataset with the sqladapter or something similar?Thx for your help!!
