How To Ensure Data Is No Longer On Disk
Jul 20, 2005
I have a table with some sensitive customer data in it. I am now
keeping all the data in another table, and encrypting it. I want to
get rid of the original unencrypted data and be sure that it is no
longer anywhere on disk. Should I drop the table, or first delete the
rows and then do a dump tran? I'm not sure how to know if the data is
actually physically deleted from disk, or if it's still there, but
just in blocks that get marked as available. Any guidance would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce

Hi we have a table with about 400000 records in it. It starting to take longer and longer to add a new record. I was thinking of creating another identical table and archiving off most of the records every month (we are now adding about about 4000 records a day) . Is this the best thing to do?
I don't know a lot about sql server so any help or suggestions would be great

Why does it take longer and longer for the same code to run very simply I have 8,0000,000 records I want to delete from a table . I have tried a few options
Option 1 a while loop which deletes 10,000 rows per loop starting from the earliest until it hits the cut of number I have set. THIS TOOK 5 HOURS
Option 2 created an SP which found the oldest 100,000 records then deleted them. If I run this SP manually it takes 30 €“ 60 secs. Which I thought was much better than above. So I put this SP in a while loop to run 80 odd times thinking the time it would take would be 80 mins a huge improvement.
But every time this SP is called it takes longer and longer (36,30,32,39,37,37,123,163,155,182€¦and so on(In seconds)).
All the sp is doing is as follows(8860000 is just to insure I don€™t delete to much). this sp is then called from in a while loop.
set @recnumber = (select top 1 recnumber from
(select top 100000 recnumber from TabletodeleteFROM where recnumber < 8860000
order by recnumber asc ) TabletodeleteFROM
order recnumber desc)
delete TabletodeleteFROM where recnumber < @recnumber
please help why is it taking longer and longer

I was wondering if SQL SERVER 2005 has a function to specify what date format you are using ex: in a where clause.
I'm looking for something like this
WHERE FORMAT(my_date, "yyyy/mm/dd")<= @my_date
So what's in red is what I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance!

I have a table with several fields. I would like to ensure that that each triple combination from the three first fields is unique.
In other words, instead of ensuring unicity based on a single field, I would like to ensure unicity on a triple of fields (equality being defined as a field-wise equality for each one of the three fields).
How can I achieve that?
Thanks in advance,
Joannes

Visual Studio 2005 Professional:
Windows XP Professional:
Frequently, SQL Server (SQLExpress) will be stopped and I am unable to test my application. When this happens SQL Server (MSSQLServer) is running.
I have to turn off my computer selecting 'turn off' and do a cold reboot. Selecting 'restart' will not do it.
Then SQLExpress is running and MSSQLServer is stopped and I can run my app.
How can I ensure that SQLExpress is running and not MSSQLServer?

Hello,
I am trying to setup a test cluster and am having an issue. When I try to create the resource of a physical disk it takes both the drive e: and drive q: and doesn't seperate them into two physical disks as resources. This means when I try to associate the quorum disk it links the to physcial disk resource of drive e and q. Then when I try to install SQL2k5 I get the warning about installing SQL on the quorum disk. Am I missing something? Is there a way to seperate e and q onto two physical disk resources so I can specifically associate the quorum to q and the sql to e or should I be setting the quorum disk to a majority node set? Thanks in advance.

I have a SSIS package with the last three tasks in the control flow are stopping the SSAS, then "on success" the second last task is execute a batch file to copy a bunch of files to a remote server using the robocopy command, then "on success" the last task is to start the SSAS. I test all three tasks individually and they are all working fine. The problem is in-between the second last task and the last task, the second last task is to execute a batch file and then forward to the last task. The task just moved to the last task once the batch file is executed and it did not wait until the actual robocopy job is completed. Therefore it caused a problem in the robocopy process. Thanks.

Hello People,
I have began to store binary data in my database, for example word documents, PDF's....etc.
But now my database file is growing beyond what I want, and I need to move all of the files out of the DB onto normal hard disk space.
Is there anyway, say by using a bulk copy command, that I can write all the contents of the table into a folder on my hard disk...???
My database table consists of ID(int), Filename(varchar), Filetype(varchar), Filesize(varchar), Filebody(image)
Any help would be extremely appreciated.....
Many Thanks,
Alan...

Cristiano writes "hi everybody.
A customer of mine has had a disk "crash" few days ago.
I wrote for him a dwh application and
of course the backup was not working...
now some "hardware guys" said that it is possible to recover most of
the files.
what I need to restore would be:
1- the sql server db
2- the sql server dts and jobs
3- the analysis service cube and dimensions
to do so is it enough for me to have:
1- the .mdf and .ldf files
2- the master.mdl /.ldf file
3- the .odb file and .dim* and .role .map ... files
right?
is it enough to recover everything?
if it is so, what would be the right processes to recover everything? "

In OO programming, data references, such as pointers in C++ or objects in C#. If the reference is null, it points to no object, or to 0x000000, thus the "referenced" object is non existent and the "object" takes up no RAM.
I know pointers are not the same as Database values, but what I'm interested in knowing is, on the bits and bytes level, what is a "NULL" and how much space does it take up, as much as is the field? Or just one byte? and when a NULL is replaced does that cause a shifting in the data of the database page or does the new data simply replace the null?

Hi All ..
I have 2 disk drive
C and D
The SQL Server data and log files are stored in D: drive
I have only 575 MB free spaces in C: drive
I have a Sql data base name StoresDB and there is a table name CustTBL
There are almost 6555500 rows in that table
My issues are whenever I am querying the CustTbl from Query Analyzer
(Select * from CustTbl)
The C: space decreased to 40 kb
And the same time,I am not getting all the rows in the query result
In Query analyzer Message Tab it is showing (6555151 row(s) affected)
But In the Grid Tab it is showing Grid#1 :6318847 rows or sometime less rows....
What is the reason to for these two issues?
I have updated the index and statistics for CustTbl TABLE but not got any changes
..
When I closed the query window the C: drive again showing 575 MB free space

Hi all,
Ok here goes,
I have a three tier system using SQL server 2000, we are currently experiencing IO bottle necks on our SCSI Raid 10 array, which holds the Data and the logs in separate partitions.
So my options as I understand it are:
Get Enterprise edition
or
Get another physical raid 10 array and separate the logs and data i.e. data on one array and logs on the other array.
I would like to try the latter but I am totally unsure how much difference this will make or whether it will make any difference at all.
Does anyone know how much performance increase I will get from using two arrays as opposed to one?
Any other advice on this scenario would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

In the 70-461 objectives it says: Ensure code non regression by keeping consistent signature for procedure, views and function (interfaces); security implications...I think I understand what this means in general. They want us to be able to create a view that will still be able to call the original data even if the table is modified. In other words, the view table shouldn't easily be broken. ie, type a code that does NOT ensure non regression, then change the code so that it does ensure non regression.Â

In SQL Server 2014, how big for the block size is better for performance? 64 KB? 4 KB?
For normal database files, best practise is 64 KB disk block size. Not sure if it is same for memory-optimized filegroup.

Hello, been having issue w/ symantec backup exec 12 for the past few months trying to backup the database files on a x64 windows 2003 sp2 server. After talking to about 6 techs from symantec, I finally come across this error and am told to contact microsoft.
I had created a .udl file to test the connection between the media server and the SQL server. It tested successfully from the media -> sql. Then I created a .udl on the SQL server to test it there, however when I tried to select the OLE DB provider for microsoft SQL server, I got the following error: "Microsoft Data Link Error: Provider is no longer available.Ensure that the provider is installed properly."
If anyone knows how to fix this issue easily that would be great. Thank you in advance.
