The Query And The Views Or Functions In It Exceed The Limit Of 256 Tables.

Feb 22, 2007

Yes, I do know what this means and why the error is thrown but this is not my question.

I have two servers that are both running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 200 SP3. Below are the results from both servers using @@version

Sever 1 (BB)

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)
Dec 17 2002 14:22:05
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)

Server 2 (Genesis)

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)
Dec 17 2002 14:22:05
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)

These servers are identical or so it seems. I've got a real ugly query that uses views and a derived table to get results. The problem is the 256 limit message only comes up on one server and on the other (Genesis) the query runs fine. I get the error though it reads a 260 limit on a box with SP4 applied. I've also run the query on a box that is Windows 2003, sql2k and sp4 and the query runs but not on a similar server here. This is all very odd. Please note that the database structure, views, etc are all exactly the same as far as I know.

Any suggestions? There seems to be no pattern between versions of Windows and/or SP levels.

Varchar Exceed 8000 Issue

I was trying to build a string based on one field from one table in Stored Procedure. I know if I declare A VARCHAR variable for the string, it won’t allow to exceed 8000. If does, it will truncate the reminding parts of the fields. What might be the simple solution for that? Even though I know I might need to use several substrings but how?
Thanks!

VARCHAR And TEXT Field Errors - Limit 255 In 7.0?

Mar 27, 2000

We're connecting to SQL Server 7.0 (sp2) via ODBC for our ASP application, and are having trouble saving information collected in a <textarea> tag on an HTML form. I assume the <textarea> tag contains data of type TEXT. i thought there would be no problem in converting it into a string and saving it in a VARCHAR field in the database. this works fine as long as the string is 255 characters or less. anything over that give me an "Errors Occurred" SQL Server error. the field that i'm saving this into is a VARCHAR length 8000. i thought SQL 7.0 had gotten rid of the 255 limit on varchar - could this be an ODBC driver problem (on my web server i currently have 3.50.0305) and/or should i install service pack 2 on my SQL Server? anyone advice would be much appreciated.

thanks,
matt

Problems Moving Data Over 8000k In DB2 Varchar Column Into SQL Server Varchar(max) Using SSIS

Nov 20, 2007

I have looked far and wide and have not found anything that works to allow me to resolve this issue.

I am moving data from DB2 using the MS OLEDB Provider for DB2. The OLEDB source sees the column of data as DT_TEXT. I setup a destination to SQL Server 2005 and everything looks good until I try and run the package.

I get the error:
[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E21. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft DB2 OLE DB Provider" Hresult: 0x80040E21 Description: "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.".

[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: There was an error with output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324) on output "OLE DB Source Output" (287). The column status returned was: "DBSTATUS_UNAVAILABLE".

The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.

Any suggestions on how I can get the large string data in the varchar column in DB2 into the varchar(max) column in SQL Server 2005?

ELSE
SELECT * FROM [Outlook]

And the error I kept getting is:

SSIS - Importing Varchar From Access Into SQL2005 As Varchar

Nov 20, 2006

For the life of me I cannot figure out why SSIS will not convert varchar data. instead of using the table to table method, I wrote a SQL query so that I could transform the datatype ntext to varchar 512 understanding that natively MS is going towards all Unicode applications.

The source fields from Access are int, int, int and varchar(512). The same is true of the destination within SQL Server 2005. the field 'Answer' is the varchar field in question....

I get the following error

DTS used to be a very strong tool but a simple import such as this is causing me extreme grief and wondering of SQL2005 is ready for primetime. FYI SP1 is installed. I am running this from a workstation and not on the server if that makes a difference...

Any help would be appreciated.

Datatype Question Varchar(max), Varchar(250), Or Char(250)

Oct 18, 2007

I have a table that contains a lot of demographic information. The data is usually small (<20 chars) but ocassionally needs to handle large values (250 chars). Right now its set up for varchar(max) and I don't think I want to do this.

How does varchar(max) store info differently from varchar(250)? Either way doesn't it have to hold the container information? So the word "Crackers" have 8 characters to it and information sayings its 8 characters long in both cases. This meaning its taking up same amount of space?

Also my concern will be running queries off of it, does a varchar(max) choke up queries because the fields cannot be properly analyzed? Is varchar(250) any better?

Should I just go with char(250) and watch my db size explode?

Usually the data that is 250 characters contain a lot of blank space that is removed using a SPROC so its not usually 250 characters for long.

Any insight to this would be appreciated.

Difference VarChar(50) And VarChar(500)

Nov 26, 2007

Hey,

I was doing some research on how SQL stores data on disk.
MSDN states that when storring a varchar, only the length of the data itself is used plus two bytes.
So, if you store "car" in a VarChar(50) it will take 5 bytes.
But when you store "car" in a VarChar(500) it will also take 5 bytes.

What is the reason users should define the parameter lenght?
Can you use VarChar(8000) whole the time, without any drawback?

Thanks

4gb Limit

Mar 26, 2007

Hi There

I recently read up and found an msdn forum post that said the 4gb limit only applied to data files not log files.

However recently i had an error on a sql express database saying that the log file was full, the database log file was set to auto grow and there was plenty of space left.

So i am guessing the 4gb limit applies to any database file mdf or ldf, is this correct ?

Thanx

Using LIMIT And UNION Together

Mar 19, 2008

hi,i have a union statement that works like a charm:SELECT
[Name],
[EventID] AS [ItemID],
[TourID],
[Date],

[Date] AS [SortDate],
[Type] FROM [Events]
WHERE
[TourID] IS NULL
AND
AccessLevel <= @AuthenticationLevel

UNION

SELECT
[Name],
[TourID] AS [ItemID],
[TourID],
NULL AS [Date],
[StartDate],
[StartDate] AS [SortDate],
'2' AS [Type]
FROM
[Tours]
WHERE
AccessLevel <= @AuthenticationLevel

ORDER BY
[SortDate]  this statement selects all the records i want from both tables, and orders the entire new table by sort date.what i want to do is to add a limitation on the number of records. i have tried using both LIMIT and TOP commands, but i can't get it working. both of the below statements give me a syntax error saying "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'ORDER'"first try:SELECT * FROM (<same_statement_as_above>) ORDER BY [SortDate] LIMIT 2second try:SELECT TOP 2 * FROM (<same_statement_as_above>) ORDER BY [SortDate]what am i doing wrong, and how do i achieve what i want?i am working with mssql server 2005 (express locally, and standard on my hosting service). thanks for your help!

Is there a limit of the parallel connections that can be opened? Or the IIS is managing all the access to the DB? Should I worry about the performance Or it's normal behaviour for ASP.NET applications?

Row Limit In MSSQL

There is at present (as we accidently found) limitation of MSSQL to return per row maximally 8060 bytes. Message like this comes: "Cannot create a row of size 8279 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060".
My questions are :
- Is there any way how to pass it? If I split into more tables (as I have it now) and ask for result where these tables are connected over any ID the result is the same. If I use stored procedures it seems to be ok. Any other idea?
- Will be this ok in SQL server 2005?

Is There An MS SQL Limit Function?

May 13, 2006

MySQL has a convenient syntax for paging data that looks like this:
SELECT * FROM MyTable LIMIT 10, 20
That would select 10 records, starting from record 20, so that it returns records 20 - 30. This is convenient way to page data, without returning anymore rows than than you need.

However, MS SQL doesn't appear to support that syntax. What is the equivalent sql code to select any N rows from an arbitrary starting point, without having to create a stored procedure?

Thanks in advance :)

Using LIMIT And UNION Together

Jul 22, 2013

I have a extremely large table and out of that I just need 2 records but based on some logic . For example

IF EMPLOYEE_ADDRESS <> NULL
set Employee_HAS_HOME to 1
ELSE
set Employee_HAS_HOME to 0

Here I can not use just first 1000 records as I am not sure If I will cover the second condition in first 1000 rows . Then I came up with solution like : -

select * from employee_table where employee_address <> NULL LIMIT 1
UNION
select * from employee_table where employee_address = NULL LIMIT 1

And this will give me 2 records which I can use for my testing . But unfortunately this is not working.
