How To Extract Auto-generated Int Identity PK Field Value Immediately After It's Made ?

Sep 12, 2007

Ok, let's say that I do a following inline INSERT statement.....

INSERT INTO Car ( carMake, carModel ) VALUES ( 'Honda', 'S2000' )

When I do this, a carId int value will automatically be generated because it is the Car table's PK and is an int identity.  How do I obtain this value so I can immediately use it in let's say, the following example.

INSERT INTO Person ( carId ) VALUES ( @carId ) ..... where @carId is the value I need

Maybe you would say I should do something like.....

SELECT carId FROM Car WHERE carMake = 'Honda' AND carModel = 'S2000'

However, let's assume that the carMake and the carModel fields are NOT unique.  I'm sure there's an easy way to extract the new identity value (maybe even in the same query) as the INSERT, but I just don't know how.

Thanks.

I've a problem with auto-generated key. In my parent table, some lines have been deleted. I would like to add new lines with the same content in order to restore my database, but I cannot decide on the id value which is an auto-generated key. Is there a solution to set an auto-generated key with a specific value ?

Thank you in advance,

How To Use Both Auto Generated Id And A Guid In Database

Oct 22, 2006

I downloaded the AdventureWorks OLTP Schema and am trying to use some of the design concepts that are used in this example but I don€™t quite understand some things.

First there is a column named rowguid, at the moment I assume that this is a GUID. If this is wrong most likely my next question will make no sense.

Second if that is indeed a guid all the tables have another id; example would be Employee table would have employeeid and rowguid, why do this? My best guess is that you would use the guid to easily insert (linked/sync) data into multiple tables without needing to retrieve the id from the table that was first input into. My scenario would be inserting an employee; to insert an employee you need to create a row in the employee, contact and address tables and for ease you would use the guid to link these rows. But if this is the case wouldn€™t there be sync issues that would arise?

If my guess is totally off please correct me also if anyone can direct me to some good resources that cover database design.

The schema can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0F6E0BCF-A1B5-4760-8D79-67970F93D5FF&displaylang=en#filelist

Thanks for any help.

Redefining An Auto-generated Primary Key Constraint Name

Jan 9, 2007

Hey there :)I'm using Ruby on Rails to create a migration of a legacy database onan MS SQL Server. I'd like to name my constraints myself, such as'pk_authors', but in the cases where a table has an auto incrementedIDENTITY(1,1) id field, Rails takes over and adds the primary keyitself when creating the table. This is fine, except then the constraint gets a name like'PK__authors_384934' which is not very intuitive or easily remembered;)I'd like to just throw in an 'ALTER TABLE authors...' statement justafter that table has been created, but I'm not sure how to go aboutrenaming the auto generated constraint since the name it gets ispartially random. Is there any way to indirectly refer to theconstraint like 'RENAME PRIMARY KEY CONSTRAINT ON authors TOpk_authors' or something like that, so that I can rename theconstraint? Thanks in advance,Daniel Buus :)

SQL 2012 :: Drop All The Auto Generated Column Statistics?

Dec 29, 2014

My question: Is it okay to drop all the auto generated column statistics? (for the following scenario)

- I am cleaning up unnecessary objects (tables, unused indexes, overlapping statistics etc) from databases and found out there are more than 1400 auto generated column statistics on one database (lets call it A).
- Database A was used to be our reporting database but from last several years we are using database B for reporting. DB A has all the historical data while DB B only has valid records.
- We are updating all the column statistics with full scan nightly on database A and it is talking almost 2.5 hours to do that. Now I want to drop all the "unnecessary" statistics those were created when DB A was reporting database and they are no longer in use. There is no way to know the creation date of the column statistics that I know of. Statistics "last update date" is of no use because of our nightly job. So I was thinking of dropping all the auto generated column statistics and let the sql server create as it needs from now.

SQL 2012 :: Remove Auto Generated Statistics After Adding Index

Nov 21, 2014

We have implemented a very small reporting database which has a main table that started off small and has now grown to around half a million rows. Initially, there were no indexes on the table apart from a clustered index, but as the data has grown, performance has dropped and so we have added a number of indexes. This has resolved the performance issues.

Before creating the indexes SQL Server had auto created a number of statistic objects (_WA_Sys_000... etc). After creating the indexes, new statistic objects where created for the new indexes. In some cases, there are duplicate statistics (auto and index) for the same columns.Should I go through and drop the duplicate auto statistics? Will having duplicates cause issues at all?

Being Delusional About Replacing Identity With Self Generated Id

Oct 30, 2006

SLQ Server 2005

Hi Guys,

Well, the big re-write of our app in Russia is an official failure and it has come back to us (after 2+ years at $20K per month). I suggested we get the data model straightened out before we do anything else.

Here's a notion that I'm expecting to have to stomp, but I thought I'd run it by you smart guys first.

Basic structure will be Admin DB as a hub and each customer (because they all request this anyway for 'security') will have a separate DB for their Disability/Leave data.

As an additional layer of 'security' it was requested that, say, the unique id of a person would be unique across all client databases. Hence if the interface queries medical info on Person 123 for Customer B there is no possiblity of accidentally returning Person 123 from Customer H, because 123 only exists as a primary key in the Person table in Customer B's database. Each available key number is used uniquely across the admin & customer databases. (As you may guess, we've had several instances of company a's data going to company b.)

We're new to the idea of splitting out customers into separate DB's but our plan is to keep the customer DB's identical in every aspect except data.

Is there a functional way to ensure a key's uniqueness across our whole structure (Admin DB as Hub and multiple client db's)? Are we nuts to want this?

Note I did look at some info on 'creating your own identity' key thinking that maybe we could keep an 'identity' in a table in the Admin DB for each client table that needs this feature. But it sounds like I'll end up with issues for sure when bulk inserts are run unless the insert is run on the table in the Admin DB.

I can't imagine anyone is going to try to answer this, but it made me feel better to type it all out here!

Last GASP On Insert Row In Table With Identity Field, And Get New Identity Back ?

Jul 9, 2006

While I have learned a lot from this thread I am still basically confused about the issues involved.

.I wanted to INSERT a record in a parent table, get the Identity back and use it in a child table. Seems simple.

To my knowledge, mine would be the only process running that would update these tables. I was told that there is no guarantee, because the OLEDB provider could write the second destination row before the first, that the proper parent-child relationship would be generated as expected. It was recommended that I create my own variable in memory to hold the Identity value and use that in my SSIS package.

1. A simple example SSIS .dts example illustrating the approach of using a variable for identity would be helpful.

2. Suppose I actually had two processes updating these tables, running at the same time. Then it seems the "variable" method will also have its problems. Is there a final solution other than locking the tables involved prior to updating them or doing something crazy like using a GUID for the primary key!

3. We have done the type of parent-child inserts I originally described from t-sql for years without any apparent problems. (Maybe we were just lucky.) Is the entire issue simply a t-sql one or does SSIS add a layer of complexity beyond t-sql that needs to be addressed?

TIA,

Jun 30, 2006

I want to insert a new record into a table with an Identity field and return the new Identify field value back to the data stream (for later insertion as a foreign key in another table).

What is the most direct way to do this in SSIS?

TIA,

P.S. Or should I pass the identity value back in a variable and not make it part of the data stream?

Auto Identity For Each Type

Jan 9, 2007

Hello,

I am working on an accounting system using VB.NET and sql server 2005 as a database. the application should be used by multiple users.
i have a the following structure:
Voucher: ID (primary), Date,TypeID, ReferenceCode, .....
Type: ID, Code, Name. (the user can add new type anytime!)
(Ex: PV- payment voucher, JV - Journal Voucher ,....)

When adding a voucher the user will choose a type, according to this type (for each year) a counter will be increminted.
for example: PV1, PV2....PV233,... the other type will have its separate counter JV1, JV2 ,...JV4569,..
I am using the sqlTransaction cause i am doing other operations that should be transactional with the insertion of the Voucher.

The question is :
What is the best solution to generate a counter for each type?(With code sample)

Thanks.

Identity Value Not Auto Incrementing

Feb 19, 2008

My Identity value column is not autoincrementing, its seed is set to 1, and increment set to 1.
yet when i click the auto generated 'Add New Record' button in the BindingNavigator control set (in a form where it is populated with databound text boxes), this Identity column is not auto incremented?

And if i try to write a value to this column, i get the error telling me this column cannot be written to. Yet if i do not write to it, then i get "This column does not allow nulls"

To load my data i am using:

Code Snippet
'clear dataset
Me.DsQuote.Clear()
'fill the datagrid with data from tblQuoteID
Me.TblQuoteIDTableAdapter.Fill(Me.DsQuote.tblQuoteID)

and to save data im using:

Code Snippet
Me.Validate()
'end data edit
Me.TblQuoteIDBindingSource.EndEdit()
'update the dataset with table data
Me.TblQuoteIDTableAdapter.Update(DsQuote.tblQuoteID)

anything im doing wrong? this data is being viewed in a datagrid btw.

Two Column Auto-number/identity

Oct 8, 2007

Hi,

I have the following two tables:

Code:

create table RECORD
(
ID int not null,
Issue_descr varchar(256) not null,
Priority varchar(5) not null,
Status varchar(12) not null,
Date_add varchar(10) not null,
Date_due varchar(10) not null,
Date_complete varchar(10),
PName varchar(32),
primary key(ID),
foreign key(PName) references PROJECT(PName)
);

and

Code:

create table STEPS
(
ID int not null,
Num int not null,
Descr varchar(256),
Date_due varchar(10) not null,
Date_complete varchar(10),
Status varchar(12),
primary key(ID, Num),
foreign key(ID) references RECORD(ID)
);

I have set PK "ID" in table RECORD to auto identity(1,1). I have done the same for PK "num" in table STEPS.
However I am seeking this behavior in STEPS:
ID num
-- ----
19 1
19 2
19 3
20 1
20 2
21 1

but what I'm getting is PK num doesn't "reseed" or reset to 1 as "ID" changes. PK num just auto-increments regardless of ID. Is there a workaround?

Thanks.

Auto-number/Identity Column

Jul 20, 2005

I am migrating a web application I wrote from ASP to ASP.Net, and fromAccess to MS SQL server. In the Access version, I did not use the auto number for creatinginvoices and other documents, because I heard somewhere (perhapsincorrectly) that if the db was ever compacted or otherwise changed,it could change the values of the auto-numbers. Not a good thing. So I wrote a routine that, just before creating a new record, wouldlook for the highest value in the table and create the new record withthe next number. So my question is, am I safe in assuming that in MS SQL that I can seta starting number for the next, let's say, invoice and that newnumbers will be issued in sequence, and that these numbers will neverchange? What happens if an invoice is deleted? is the number goneforever? Just wondering how others deal with these issues...thanks.Larry- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

Sp To Extract Characters From One Field To Another

Aug 15, 2007

Hello,

I have a table in sql server that has a field with numeric characters, i would like to select some but not all characters from this field and insert it into a new field. The field that i want to get some characters from has other characters that i dont need, It has a lot of zero's next to the numbers that i need. so far i created a stored procedure, but its not working. I want to extract the characters and insert them into a new field in the format "000.00" or "00.00". The values are either hunderths or tenths, which makes it difficult for me to decide which characters to ignore. Please see my SP created so far below:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.spUpdatePaymentDetails
AS UPDATE dbo.PaymentDetails
SET NewAmount = SUBSTRING('00' + TransactionAmount, 1, LEN('00' +TransactionAmount) - 2) + '.' + SUBSTRING('00' + TransactionAmount, LEN('00' + TransactionAmount) - 1, 2)
GO

the character "." is not in the original field so therefore i would like to insert it into the new field.

Please help urgently.

Tnx
