How To Figure Out If The Dataset Returned Any Data Or Not While Rendering The Report Through The SSRS Web Service
Jan 12, 2007
In one of my projects, i have been using the SSRS web service to render a report as pdf and then manually emailing it out.
I need to know whether the data set for the report returned any data or not (so that i can avoid emailing the report with a blank report body).
Ofcource this can be done by executing the same query (same as the query for the report) from C# code and checking the count of the resultset, before calling the SSRS Render method. But it might not be an efficient method.
Was wondering the the SSRS Web Service provides an property or method that can let me figure out whether the resultset was empty or not (after the report execution).
Hello, I'm using Reporting Services to render a text (stored in sql as varchar(max)). The text is all plain text, with some lines having trailing spaces.
Source text file i've imported to SQL via SSIS: CLIENT: 10055 STATEMENT 2007 DATE:1002993 THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3 TRY THIS
*Note the trailing spaces on the line before 'STATEMENT 2007'.
I've designed a report using the Report Project in VS2005 to retrieve this text via a stored procedure. When I test the report using the 'Preview' tab in the IDE, it looks good CLIENT: 10055 STATEMENT 2007 DATE:1002993 THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3 TRY THIS
But when I deploy the report and run it using URL Access:
CLIENT: 10055 STATEMENT 2007 DATE:1002993
THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT
COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3 TRY THIS
On all lines with trailing spaces, they (the trailing spaces) have been removed. This is affecting my formatting of some reports and statements. We really want to use the report viewer as it has built in paging, print and export capabilities.
Why does it look okay in VS2005 but different in Report Viewer via URL Access and Report Manager?
Note: When I export as PDF, it looks okay.
The stored procedure I use to return the data is a CLR Hosted assembly as below:
Code Snippet Partial Public Class StoredProcedures <Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure()> _
Public Shared Sub GetPagedDocument(ByVal inText As SqlString) Dim dr As SqlDataReader Dim row As New SqlDataRecord(New SqlMetaData("RowText", SqlDbType.Text)) Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("select cast(doc as varchar(max)) as 'DOCTEXT' from testdoc WHERE id='" + inText + "'") Dim cn As New SqlConnection("context connection=true") cn.Open() cmd.Connection = cn SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsStart(row) 'initialise the resultset to be returned dr = cmd.ExecuteReader 'If no records in result set, return. If Not dr.HasRows Then
row.SetString(0, "There is no document to display or you do not have permission to view the document.") SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsRow(row) SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsEnd() ' SqlContext.Pipe.Send("There is no document to display.") Return End If 'Read rows in the result set dr.Read()
'Get the entire text Dim docText As String = dr.Item("DOCTEXT") 'debug row.SetString(0, docText) SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsRow(row) SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsEnd() Return 'end debug
Is there any example I can find a full feature demo of SSRS Web Service Rendering with Interactive Sort and other features enabled?
For MS: Indeed I think ReportViewer Control should be an open source component as we as developer needs the flexibility to customize the report viewer interface as well as can learn directly from the control source so to understand how can we integrate better with SSRS.
I am having a situation where my SSRS report when exported to PDF shows the exact report & when exported to MS Word, shows some unwanted space in the report column. Also the borders of the report are shown cut when exported.
I am trying to render a report using the ReportExecutionService class render method. The report has a parameter ( Combo Box) which gets populated when the report is opened in report server. there are other parameters also. I am passing all the parameters in an array ParameterValue[] .
But the execution throws an error . I tried to catch the error using SoapException and the Error Code was "
rsReportParameterValueNotSet" for that parameter.
What i get is that i will have to paa all the parameters after opening the report so that the parameter (Combo box) get populated with the values and after that if I pass the parameters it should work.
For Example on the report server , when i open the link to the report that time it populates the data for parameter. Then i get the list of values gor the parameter.I am not able to find a way how to get this done through code.
I am not able to find any help regarding this. Please help at earliest.
I'm trying to add a custom report format to ssrs 2005 as per this [URL] I've added the code snippets in the example to three different ssrs 2005 server RSReportServer.config files but it does not work i.e do not show up in the export drop down when rendering report.
I've tried starting and stopping reporting services and it still does not works.
I've also modified the existing csv extension  with different options to see if it works but to no avail. However it works with SSRS2008 R2 . In fact it works right after I saved the config file, no restart needed. For SSRS2005 the file is in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting ServicesReportServer. I checked the registry setting  just to make sure I'm looking at the correct installation 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', 'SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsClientSetup', 'SQLPath' The three ssrs2005 instances are in three different physical servers and the problem is with all of them so it is not an isolated incident. I've dbowner rights to all three servers. The server versions are 9.0.4060, 9.0.4035 and 9.0.4053
Is there a way to return the fields collection of a dataset using the Reporting services Web Service? I can get to the reports but not the datasets. Thank you in advance for any support you can provide.
I have a stored procedure which returns a result set as follows:
(Headers)Total,WV1,WV2,WV3,WV4,WV5..... (Example data) "Some total name",1,2,3,4,5.....
The WV1, WV2, WV3 column names will be different depending on parameters passed to the stored procedure. In other words, the column names or number of columns aren't fixed (apart from "Total").
What I would like to be able to do is to just force SSRS to use the column headers supplied by the stored procedure as the column names in the report.
I have created multiple data sources and datasets in my SSrS project. I created the datasets so I could use them as the basis for reports. However, when I open the wizard to create a new report, I am always asked for a data source, and then have to renter the SQL code that I have stored in one of my datasets. How can I have a report use an existing dataset as it source of data? Otherwise, the datasets I created seem useless . . .
I'm running sql server ver 7.0 SP4.I have an access project (.adp) that runs a view which is nothing morethan a select statement. Access locks up solid when I try to run thisquery - with NO error messages what-so-ever.If I sign onto the server, and run the view from enterprise manager - Iget:"the data provider or other service returned an E_FAIL status" !?!?!There is NO ERROR number, or further explanation of the message!!Now - this query DID work last week - all of a sudden I get this error- I've:1) repaired / compacted this database2) rebooted the server3) spent several hours searching websites & groups for an explanationa) I don't care how useless some people think enterprise manager is -at least it gave me SOME kind of error; where access just locks up!b) There are no issues with null values, or problem date fieldsanywhere in these tables.4) tried MANY variations on the query, and am now more confused thanever.5) I've RUN THIS QUERY IN AN ACCESS MDB WITH LINKS TO THE SQL SERVER -AND IT WORKS!?!?!?!?The query I'm using follows; if I remove ONE field from the selectstatement - this query RUNS!!!It doesn't matter what field I remove! It's as if, I can only have somany fields in the select statement!?!?!?This is clearly ridiculous since the query ran fine last week with thesame number of fields, not thatthat should have anything to do with this, as sql shouldn't care howmany fields I request.I'm not actually requesting any fields in the last table - but if Iremove this table it works!? If I leave this table, and select fieldsfrom it, but remove another table - again it works! So my questions:1) What [T-] is going on here?2) Why would an mdb be able to run a query that an adp can not!?!?3) When will microsoft ever release a product that provides usefulerror messages?I really don't expect an answer to #3, because I know the answer isNEVER - microsoft doesn't want to make solving problems easy. Here's the query I'm using:SELECT codes.proj_id, answers.report_date,answers.release_date, answers.notes,answers.answer_date, answers.answer_person,answers.answer, answers.answer_status,answers.answer_person2, codes.cust_idFROM dbo.codes LEFT OUTER JOINdbo.demos ONdbo.codes.code = dbo.demos.code LEFT OUTER JOINdbo.answers ON dbo.codes.code = dbo.answers.codeany help appreciated - TIABob
after converting database from sql server 2000 to sql server 2005. my program on vb6 is facing runtime error. i.e.data provider or other service returned an E_Fail status .
I am running an Access adp application with SQL Server 2005 as back end database. I run a query by using Management Studio query window, and it returned correct results with some columns containing NULL value. But when I run this query through MS Access client side, popup an error "Data provider or other service returned an E_FAIL status" and crash the Access application. I moved the database back to SQL Server 2000, and it runs perfect on both client side and server side returning the correct result. This query is important for the application. Please help!!!!
Query as followed:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreamEnrolments.StudentID, dbo.RequiredStreams.StreamType, dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.StreamCode + CAST(dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.StreamNo AS varchar) AS FullStreamCode, dbo.DaysOfWeek.DayCode, dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.StartTime, dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.EndTime, dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.Room, dbo.Tutors.TutorName, dbo.Tutors.PhoneExtn, dbo.Tutors.OfficeHours, dbo.DaysOfWeek.DaySequence, dbo.RequiredStreams.StreamOrder FROM dbo.RequiredStreams INNER JOIN dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams ON dbo.RequiredStreams.PaperID = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.PaperID AND dbo.RequiredStreams.StreamCode = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.StreamCode INNER JOIN dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreamEnrolments ON dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.PaperID = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreamEnrolments.PaperID AND dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.StreamCode = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreamEnrolments.StreamCode AND dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.StreamNo = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreamEnrolments.StreamNo LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.DaysOfWeek INNER JOIN dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses ON dbo.DaysOfWeek.DayCode = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.DayofWeek ON dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.PaperID = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.PaperID AND dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.StreamCode = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.StreamCode AND dbo.VWINFO312FYTRStreams.StreamNo = dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.StreamNo LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.Tutors ON dbo.VWINFO312FYTRClasses.ResponsibleTutor = dbo.Tutors.TutorID
I created two reports in SSRS and have configured both the web service and report manager URLs in report services configuration manager.
whenever I try to open either one of the two reports from the manager or service I get the following error msg.
"An error occurred within the report server database. This may be due to a connection failure, timeout or low disk condition within the database.
(rsReportServerDatabaseError)
Invalid object name 'DataSets'. Could not use view or function 'ExtendedDataSets' because of binding errors."
I get a similar msg when I try to deploy the reports from VS 2010. Only the first 2 sentences are returned.
I'm mystified as to why DataSets is an invalid object name. It shows as the TargetDatasetFolder name WebsiteReports Property Page. I've looked around for the error source and can not find where this error is stemming from.
the Dataset in my report doesn't update the fields' values from the database. I refresh the dataset manualy in the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio to see the new values in the report.
I have a report with multiple datasets, the first of which pulls in data based on user entered parameters (sales date range and property use codes). Dataset1 pulls property id's and other sales data from a table (2014_COST) based on the user's parameters. I have set up another table (AUDITS) that I would like to use in dataset6. This table has 3 columns (Property ID's, Sales Price and Sales Date). I would like for dataset6 to pull the Property ID's that are NOT contained in the results from dataset1. In other words, I'd like the results of dataset6 to show me the property id's that are contained in the AUDITS table but which are not being pulled into dataset1. Both tables are in the same database.

First of all, this is not in reference to using SRS (SQL Reporting Services) to render a report and then use one of the extensions to render the complete report as a pdf, tiff, excel etc. We have an opportunity to render a list of claims and then embed the supporting docs for each of the claims within the report. We don't have an issue referencing jpg and gif images via URLs and then rendering them within the report after the grid information. We do have an issue rendering tiff images within the report.
You can insert an image object into SRS at design time and have it render and you can convert a complete report to a tiff image but I cannot find a way to be able to render a tiff image when running the report. All you get is the red "x".
My question is has anyone encountered the same issue and, if so, what did you do to resolve the issue?
I found out the data I need for my SQL Report is already defined in a dynamic dataset on another web service. Is there a way to use web services to call another web service to get the dataset I need to generate a report? Examples would help if you have any, thanks for looking
I am creating a simple SSRS table report through Report Builder. My dataset is looking for the stored procedure . When I execute the Stored procedure through SSMS I get resutset for certain parameters. I execute the dataset  (Store procedure) through query designer in dataset properties and I get results back. But when I try to run the report and see the preview, I do not get any results displayed. I been looking on the same issue form last 3-4 days and have not found any clue.
Following is the stored procedure I am using. Also I am passing multivalued parameter through report as well, and I am using spilt function to seperate the libraryid I am reading from parameter values. This works fine. I have similar kind of four other reports and with different stored procedure which exactly follow the same method , like multivalue parameters and other criteria are also very similar. All other reports works just fine.. This perticular report has issue for displying results, following is the stored procedure I am usingÂ
Before I begin describing our problem, let me first start off with a description of our environment and current configuration.
Background/Configuration Specs
We have SQL Server Reporting Services running on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, Service Pack 1 server. It is configured so that the Reports and ReportServer virtual directories run under a sql server domain account.
The datasets for our reports are xml datasets returned from calling a web service on a second IIS server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, Service Pack 1. The web service runs under a service account and is not set to impersonate the user. The web service contacts a database located on the same server as reporting services to retrieve the data. So, it should receive the request, login to the database it is trying to access using the service account, and return the dataset.
We are programatically accessing reports via a client application, specifying the virtual directory via the reportserver url (e.g. http:\hostname\reportserver\virtual directory path\report name).
Kerberos is enabled on both the sql box and the iis box with constrained delegation allow the sql account access to the iis box.
Problem
When I try to browse to the report from Report Manager in IE, (http:\hostname\Reports\...etc) I am able to successfully view the report.
When I try to view the report in the client app, (http:\hostname\reportserver\...etc.) the report fails.
Looking at the iis logs, it appears that in the first case, the web service is receiving the request from the sql server domain account. In the second case, it appears that the web service is receiving the request from an anonymous login.
Questions
What exactly is the difference between rendering/viewing a report via ReportManager versus programatically via ReportServer?
Is there any configuration we need to be aware of when configuring ReportServer?
Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.
I'll go to a dataset, open up the query designer, add a new parameter, then refresh the fields, but the parameter won't be added as a report parameter. If I go to the dataset properties under the list of parameters, the value in the dropdown will be blank. However, sometimes this will automatically add.Â
Is this a bug in Visual Studio? How do I get around this?Â
I'm using a SqlDataSource with a GridView to look at the contents of a table. I'd like to display the number of rows returned by the query in a label above the grid. How do I get a hold of this value? I can't find where it's exposed through the DataSource or the Grid. I can get the number of rows in the currently displayed page, but that's not the value I'm after.
I have a web page that has been in production for over a year. On occasion the web app users report sporadic errors which last a few minutes then go away. The page loads up a generic DataSet, and then that DataSet is assigned to a datagrid on the page. The error is that a column that is expected to be in the dataset is not found. I know this column must exist in the database because its a required field. After we reset IIS, then all returns to normal and the errors go away. Below is the stack trace. Exception: System.IndexOutOfRangeException Message: Cannot find column LastName. Source: System.Data at System.Data.DataTable.ParseSortString(String sortString) at System.Data.DataView.UpdateIndex(Boolean force) at System.Data.DataView.SetIndex(String newSort, DataViewRowState newRowStates, DataFilter newRowFilter) at System.Data.DataView..ctor(DataTable table, String RowFilter, String Sort, DataViewRowState RowState) at MySystem.Web.GuestSearch.ShowResults(DataSet ds, Int32 currentPageIndex) at MySystem.Web.GuestSearch.LoadResults(Int32 currentPageIndex) at MySystem.GuestSearch.btnSearch_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.System.Web.UI.IPostBackEventHandler.RaisePostBackEvent(String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(IPostBackEventHandler sourceControl, String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(NameValueCollection postData) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain() Our DBA can find no problems on the database side and our web servers don't log any system event problems either. I do not understand why resetting IIS helps the issue. I need to find the real cause of the problems rather than just resetting IIS all the time. Any ideas?
I am extracting RS reports through a WebService: report = execService.Render("EXCEL", null, out extension, out mimeType, out encoding, out warnings, out streamIds);
Some works fine but some are generating the following SoapException:
Error during processing of €˜ReportParameterTime€™ report parameter. ---> Error during processing of €˜ReportParameterTime€™ report parameter. ---> Error during processing of €˜ReportParameterTime€™ report parameter. I set required parameters to their default values. In this specific report I have two required parameters: 1: ReportParameterTime, String 2: ReportParameter1, String
I set them to their default values (ReportParameterTime to "[Czas].[Kalendarzowy].[Rok].&[2007]" - means Time Calendar Year 2007) but I am getting the exception above. I set parameters using this code:
Where parameterValues is a List<ReportExecution2005.ParameterValue>.
When I am using Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportViewer the report is generated without any problems. I can see one parameter to choose: "Kalendarzowy" (means adj. Calendar) and can select years, the default value is "2007".
What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this error ? Does anybody know ?
My system environment: win2008 R2 SP1 64bit + SQL 2005 SP4 32bit
I amended the configuration file of rsreportserver.config with the below:
<Extension Name="CSV" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.CsvRenderer.CsvReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.CsvRendering" > Â Â <Configuration> Â Â <DeviceInfo> Â Â Â <Encoding>UTF-8</Encoding> Â Â </DeviceInfo> Â Â </Configuration> Â Â </Extension>
If I run the report and then click export by selecting the csv format, it looks ok with the encoding of UTF-8.
However, the same report , when I created a subscription and saved it in the hard driver. Its encoding became USC-2 Little Endian.
