How To Find User Login Password

Feb 25, 2013

Earlier one of my team member has created a user login and password but forgot the password after few days and now we need to know the password of that login.  Some of the application are using this login so we can delete and create a new login with the same name hence is there any possibility or script to find out the password of the existing login.

Note: The login is not 'sa'

Can't Change Sql Login User's Password

Jan 13, 2006

SQL Server 2005 Express will not allow me to change the password for my login user. I tried deleting the user and re-creating the user. Another password is being put in although the password I put in was accepted. I even test to see what would happen if I left the password blank. It got accepted. But when I look at the password for my login user again, a different and much longer password was put in. I even tried this T-SQL statement:

CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<passwordname>', CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF

I am out of ideals. Is this a bug?

Encrypted Password Generated Login Failed For User '(null)'

Oct 1, 2007

Hello

SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP3

I have an application which uses a login with an encrypted password. Everything works well, no errors in the application.
My SQL Server errorlogs keeps recording:

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

I know this message is related to the login with the encrypted password (tracked it with Profiler)
My question: Is it normal that the error log tracks this message because the password is encrypted?

Many thanks!
Worf

I Can't Change My Sql Login User's Password In SQL Server 2005 Express

Jan 13, 2006

SQL Server 2005 Express keeps putting in a different password than the one I chose.  I would check the properties on the login I want to change.  Then I change the password and it gets accepted.  When I try my web application, I get the dreaded "login failed for <loginname>".  I look at the properties again and see my password never change.  Is this a bug?  I ever tried this syntax to no avail:

CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<mypassword>' CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF

How To Find Group User Login Name

Jul 20, 2005

Our system administrator set up an NT server group in order to allowour users to login to our application via https to our sql server. The group appears as a User in SQL Server when you look at it inEnterprise Manager. That said, I can not see the users associatedwith the group from Enterprise Manager, but know they can login to thedatabase. The problem is this. When we login via the web we get access to thedatabase without problem, but when you look at the current_user whatyou see is the login Name the user entered and NOT the name of thegroup/User. That is to say, I can see a UserID which is not listed asa User in SQL Server and can't see the name of the group, which islisted as a user in SQL Server.I need to know who's logging in order to direct them to theappropriate web page via their role. Before the admin set up thegroup, I was using sp_helpuser to get the role, but then again I hadthe userID to do this. The question I have now, is there any way to see what thegroup/user is who logged in i.e. the goup listed as the User inEnterprise Manager? Otherwise I have to build a table of userIDs andtheir group/User name, which seems to defeat the purpose of having heserver authenticate users. Thanks,Tom

SqlException (0x80131904): Cannot Open User Default Database. Login Failed. Login Failed For User 'xxxASPNET'

Jun 17, 2007

Hey Microsoft: this affects development that will eventually sell a lot of seats on SharePoint Server 2007. If you guys and gals can't straighten out this mess, you can't expect custom solutions with custom web parts. So pay attention for your own good. Yes, SPS 2007 is what this is all about. I've created simpe web parts and deployed them, same VS 2005, but I need local development and debugging for more complex stuff. I'm really disappointed that you have no solution for this problem.

I've seen other posts on this, but the result seems to be the same: if you fix it, it's by accident, not by design.

1. I created a blank ASP.NET web site

2. I added a web part manager

3. I added a web part zone

I get the error described above. I have no idea why SQL Server settings are so screwed up.

I've tried all the stuff in the other posts - security settings, command line installation, etc. None of those worked.

The default template(s) don't copy anything into App_Data, nor create an empty folder. I don't know why that is. I have other web sites working just fine, but they use remote SQL databases, or local ones I created, and didn't need profile management (no forms authentication, no web parts, no web zones).

I've also started out with a local database, using SQL Authentication, later moving it to a remote server, and never had any problems. The SQL Server developer edition and Express seem to work just fine. I can also debug stored procs when the .mdf is in App_Data. So the problem isn't one of connectivity.

What would cause the default screw-up? This would seem to point from all directions to a problem with Visual Studio (2005)? The installation is defalt - perhaps some extras included (copy local), but nothing unusual. AJAX for ASP.net is installed, but not used in the above "default web site" trial. Likewise Syncfusion's tools, which work fine on other developer workstations at this same location, all of which are from the same image (purchased at the same time & imaged). That web parts work on other boxes, running all the same management tools (anti-virus, remote sys admin/sms etc.) makes none of those suspect.

I think Microsoft needs to have a clean problem solution and publish it. SP1 certainly doesn't fix it. What's worse is the stupid, lame error message. "I can't open the default database". Well, what did you try? What do you think the default is? What settings are you using? Why is there no debugging information other than the usual worthless trace information showing it's all deep within the ProviderBase and SqlClient namespace code? How is that supposed to be helpful?

If anyone has anything solid, not guesses, I'd like to know.

Alter Login Fails When Login Changes His Own Password

Apr 11, 2008

I have seen alot of comments posted about an Issue in SQL2005 that no one at microsoft could really answer. If a user would try to alter his own login, it would fail stating a permissions error.

This is what I did to get it to work .

USE my_dataBase
GO

Alter Login [my_login] WITH PASSWORD = 'newpassword' OLD_PASSWORD = 'oldpassword'

In previous examples, people were trying to do an alter login without first narrowing it to the database.
If you do not include the USE statement it will fail.

Another thing to note is that they can only change certain things....they cannot turn off check_policy or check_expiration.

Happy Coding

DB Engine :: Extract All Privileges And User Password For A User In DDL Format For Server?

Jul 12, 2010

My goal is to write a DR plan where i am restoring all user databases onto a diffrent server in a event of hardware failure. I was trying to figure out a way to extract DDL of user accounts and their permissions on all user databases so i can simplify my DR documentation.

This is the plan I came up with...to restore all system and user dbs on a different Physical SQLServer.

1. build named instance $PROD

2. restore master database

    - startup sqlserver in single user mode -m or DAC sqlcmd -S ServerName -U sa -P<xxx> –A
    net stop MSSQLSERVER$PROD
    net start MSSQLSERVER$PROD -m
    - restore database master from disk e:master.bak with replace;

3. start sqlserver normally

4. stop SQLServer agent

5. restore msdb

-restore database msdb disk e:msdb.bak with replace;

6. restart SQLServer

7. Restore User Databases.

8. Run Sp_change_users_login for all users

-Sp_Change_users_logins 'auto_fix','username'

Cannot Open Database XXXX Requested By Login. The Login Failed. Login Failed For User 'xxx'

Mar 18, 2007

hi,
so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login.  The login failed.  Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database.  I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account.  Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too.  But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database.  If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped.  Any ideas?

Migration Problems From SQL 2000 To SQL 2005: User Cannot Find The User 'RSExecRole'

Jan 25, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to migrate reporting services from SQL server 2000 to SQL 2005. I followed the migration steps listed in one of the TechNet documents. Installed SQL 2005 and SP2.

Backed up existing SQL 2000 databases and restored on SQL 2005.

Went to Configuration tool and then to the Database setup. Connected to SQL 2005.

Clicked on the Upgrade button. The upgrade fails and I always get the following errors:

"The database version (C.0.6.54) does not match your reporting services installation. You must upgrade your Reporting services database"

Then I get this exception:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot find the user 'RSExecRole', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)

I do not understand why it is looking for user 'RSExecRole', which is a role.

Appreciate your help

Second User Trying To Connect Generates: Cannot Open User Default Database. Login Failed.

Apr 25, 2007

Hi, I'm new to SQL Express 2005.
I found information regarding : "Cannot open user default database. Login failed."on this forum but I think that in my case it's a bit different issue.
I have a website (ASP.NET 2.0) accessing DB, in the mean time Windows Service tries to update some data in the same DB (Service runs as NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM). The second connection is rejected: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user ....".
Problem occurs only when both: service and website are running at the same time. So service and website are running without problems when they are connecting DB exclusively.
My connection string is:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|spider-lab.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

I would be grateful if you can help me

Login Failed For User 'testuser'. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection.

Aug 19, 2006

Hi,
I have a copy of VS2005 and i have installed the Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition
I am trying to do my first connection using ASP.net (yay for me...) and it has failed...with this error..Login failed for user 'testuser'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

can someone please point out why? yes i know that the error seems pretty straight forward but how do i fix it? like how do i make the user a trusted server connection? where do i do it? and what are the steps? the user is an administrator and by rights should have all access to everything....

connection string

SqlConnection MySQLConnection;              MySQLConnection = new SqlConnection("server=cmptrname\databsename;uid=testuser;password=password;database=mytest");

btw while your reading do you have any examples of opening a db with the connection string in the web.config file? because i get some error "connection string has not been initialised"  using the
system.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings.Get
i though i would stick to the top code first before i tackled the web config error first....

Thanks heaps
