How To Get Statistics On DML Statements Per Table
Aug 18, 2006
Can I get statistics on which type of DML statements (e.g. insert, delete, update) that are executed by users on a table without creating triggers? I want to be able to show the number of executed statements per statement type. I have tried the 2005 Profiler but it outputs the entire batch statement which makes it a bit more difficult to create statistics.

Hello group.I have an issue, which has bothered me for a while now:I'm wondering why the column statistics, which SQL Server wants me tocreate, if I turn off auto-created statistics, are so important to theoptimizer?Example: from Northwind (with auto create stats off), I do the following:SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE Country = 'Sweden'My query plan show a clustered index scan, which is expected - no indexexists for Country. BUT, the query plan also shows, that the optimizer ismissing a statistic on Country, which tells me, that the optimizer wouldbenefit from knowing this.I cannot see why? (and I've been trying for a while now).If I create the missing statistics, nothing happens in the query plan (andwhy should it?). I could understand it, if the optimizer suggested an indexon Country - this would make sense, but if creating the missing index, queryanalyzer creates the statistics with an empty index, which seems to me to beless than usable.I've been thinking long and hard about this, but haven't been able to reacha conclusion :) It has some relevance to my work, because allowing theoptimizer to create missing statistics limits my options for designingindexes (e.g. covering) for some rather wide tables, so I'm thinking why notturn it off altogether. But I would like to know the consequences - hopesomebody has already delved into this, and knows a good explanation.RgdsJesper

What is the unit of the numbers you get in the Time Statistics-part when running a query in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio with Client Statistics turned on?
Currently I get mostly 0´s, but if I try and *** up a query on purpose I can get
it up to around 30... Is it milliseconds or som made up number based on clockcycles or... ?
I would also like to know if it´s possible to change the precision.

hi. i'm trying to make a report in asp that sums up a whole bunch of statistics. the report is quite lengthy and takes about 2 minutes to load. i thought i would solve that problem by making a table to dump the statistics into instead of calculating the statistics every time the report is viewed. this way, the page would just read the table with the statistics already put in it. these statistics would be updated every day or two so i don't need anything up to the minute.however, i have run into a small problem which is actually updating the information in the table. my new table is called OfficeReport and it looks like this:UserID Stat1 Stat2 Stat3 ...... Stat3223 0 0 0 056 0 0 0 072 0 0 0 0this is a query for one of the statistics i am currently using:SELECT DefendantCase.UserID, COUNT(DefendantCase.UserID) AS CountOfUserID FROM DefendantCase LEFT JOIN UserDescription ON DefendantCase.UserID=UserDescription.UserID WHERE UserDescription.Status=1 AND UserDescription.UserType=1GROUP BY DefendantCase.UserIDif i run this query, this is what i get:UserID CountOfUserID54 2160 1052 294 427 22how can i modify this query so its output updates the same UserID column in the OfficeReport table? Thanks!

We recently upgraded one of our servers to SQL 2005 - SP2. This server is a subscriber. Both the publisher and the distributor are SQL 2000. We are now having issues with some of our Snapshot publications.
One of the tables in the publication has statistics created on it - not sure how they were created. This table is small - has a PK on it but no other indexes - this is similar to other tables in the same publication that aren't having issues.
When the snapshot runs each night it tries to recreate these stats on the tables. Since they already exist we get and error saying There are already statistics on table XXX named ZZZ.
We can go in and delete the stats on the table and then replication will go through and recreate them but obviously this isn't something we want to do everyday.
Does anyone have a work around for this??

Hello ,
I am having a problem related to Alter table syntax in MS SQL Server .
What I want to do is in a single alter table statement I want to add as well as modify columns in a table.
For E.g.
alter table testtable add fld1 numeric(10),
alter column fld2 numeric(15)
But I am getting an error.are these kinds of statements possible in MSSQL server ?I was able to do so in Oracle.I just wanted some confirmation or examples of whether this is possible in MS SQL Server also.
Fast Help would be extremely appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi,I'm using a 3rd-party app's back end which stores SQL statements in atable, so I have no choice but to use dynamic SQL to call them (unlesssomeone else knows a workaround...)Problem is, I can't get the statement to run properly, and I can't seewhy. If I execute even a hard-coded variation likeDECLARE @sql nvarchar(MAX)SET @sql ='SELECT foo FROM foostable'sp_executesql @sqlI get: Incorrect syntax near 'sp_executesql'.If I runsp_executesql 'SELECT foo FROM foostable'I get: Procedure expects parameter '@statement' of type 'ntext/nchar/nvarchar'.which I understand, as it's omitting the N converter--so if I runsp_executesql N'SELECT foo FROM foostable'it's fine. I don't understand why the first version fails. Is it somesort of implicit conversion downgrading @sql? Every variation of CASTand CONVERT I use has no effect. This is SQL Server 2005 SP2. Thanks in advance.

HiI'm using the SQL 2000 table variable to hold 2 different fact sets.I'm declaring the variable @CurrentTable and inserting into it using aSELECT statement with no problems.I'm leaving certain of the columns null in order to later update themwith the PK.Problem is in the UPDATE syntax I'm usingUPDATE @CurrentTableSET ManagerTitle = (select mgrs.pos_title from mgrs) wheremgrs.pos_num = @CurrentTable.MgrPosNumIt is insisting I declare the @CurrentTable variable when I try to useit in the where clause. Is it simply out-of-scope or am I really doing something foolish?Andrew

I have some problems getting my SSIS package to run in a transaction, I wonder if anyone can assist.
What I want to do is run one package, which consists of a
- 1) create staging table SQL statement
- 2) read (all) from Access MDB to staging
- 3) copy (only new) from staging table to real table
- 4) drop the staging table
I changed the package to "require" a transactions, and left all containers in it to "supported" (default, I think). I left all the transaction type to default "serializeable".
The package does not work, since the table I created on step one is not "seen" when step 2 wants to insert into it. If I set the package transaction back to "supported" (default) the package works, but an error on step 2 or 3 will not rollback changes and not remove the staging tables...
So, my question really is: How do I make step 1 results visible to step 2 in the same transaction? Or do I need to take a completly different approach for this?
Stupid question I think, but I seem to not be able to find the right way to handle this situation...
Thanks for reading!

Ok, here is my situation.....
When someone navigates to a user's profile page on my site, I present them with a slideshow of the user's photos using the AJAX slideshow extender. I obtain the querystring value in the URL (to determine which user's page I'm on) and feed that into a webservice via a context value where an array of photos is created for the slideshow. Now, in order to create the array's size, I do a COUNT of all of that specific user's photos. Then, I run another SQL statement to obtain the path of those photos in the file system. However, during the time of that first SQL query's execution (the COUNT statement) to the time of the second SQL query (getting the paths of the photos), the owner of that profile may upload or delete a photo from his profile. I understand this would be a very rare occurrence since SQL statements 1 and 2 will be executed within milliseconds of each other, but it is still possible I suppose. When this happens, when I try to populate the array, either the array will be too small or too large. I'm using SqlDataReader for this as it seems to be less memory and resource intensive than datasets, but I could be wrong since I'm a relative beginner and newbie. This is what I have in my vb file for the webservice.....Public Function GetSlides(ByVal contextKey As String) As AjaxControlToolkit.Slide() Dim dbConnection As New SqlConnection("string for the data source, etc.") Try dbConnection.Open() Dim memberId = CInt(contextKey) Dim photoCountLookupCmd As New SqlCommand _ ("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Photo WHERE memberId = " & memberId, dbConnection) Dim thisReader As SqlDataReader = photoCountLookupCmd.ExecuteReader() Dim photoCount As Integer While (thisReader.Read()) photoCount = thisReader.GetInt32(0) End While thisReader.Close() Dim MySlides(photoCount - 1) As AjaxControlToolkit.Slide Dim photoLookupCmd As New SqlCommand _ ("SELECT fullPath FROM Photo WHERE memberId = " & memberId, dbConnection) thisReader = photoLookupCmd.ExecuteReader()
Dim i As Integer For i = 0 To 2 thisReader.Read() Dim photoUrl As String = thisReader.GetString(0) MySlides(i) = New AjaxControlToolkit.Slide(photoUrl, "", "") Next i thisReader.Close() Return MySlides Catch ex As SqlException Finally dbConnection.Close()
End Try
End FunctionI'm trying to use the most efficient method to interact with the database since I don't have unlimited hardware and there may be moderate traffic on the site. Is SqlDataReader the way to go or do I use something else? If I do use SqlDataReader, can someone show me how I can run those 2 SQL statements in best practice? Would I have to somehow lock writing to that table when I start the first SQL statement, then release the lock after I execute the second SQL statement? What's the best practice in this kind of scenario.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
OK, trying to return the results from two SQL statements into a DataSet using SqlDataAdapter. The SELECT statements query the same table but are looking for different records based on the date that the records were inserted - the 1st query looks for records fro the current month and the 2nd one looks at the same records but for the previous month. The goal is to be able to do some math within a repeater and get the difference between the two records.
Sounds easy enough and it has worked for me in different variations of the same idea but not this time - here's the code:
Protected Sub buildPartsReport(ByVal varHC) objConn.Open() sSQL = "SELECT ap.id,item_model,item_sn,aircraft_id,item_loc=item_type+ ' on ' +(SELECT tnum FROM T_Aircraft WHERE id=aircraft_id),apt.tot_time As endTimes,apt.tot_cycles as endCycles FROM T_Aircraft_Parts ap, T_Aircraft_Parts_Totals apt WHERE ap.id=apt.part_id AND report_date= '" & rD & "' AND item_type LIKE 'engine%';SELECT ap.id,apt.part_id,apt.tot_time as startTimes,apt.tot_cycles as startCycles FROM T_Aircraft_Parts ap, T_Aircraft_Parts_Totals apt WHERE ap.id=apt.part_id AND report_date= '" & oldRD & "' AND item_type LIKE 'engine%'" Dim objCommand As New SqlDataAdapter(sSQL, objConn) DS = New DataSet() objCommand.Fill(DS) Repeater1.DataSource = DS Repeater1.DataBind() DS.Dispose() objCommand.Dispose() objConn.Close() End Sub
Sorry if it wrapped a bit. The "rD" and "oldRD" are the variables for the date ranges (currently set to static numbers for testing). I'm getting the following error when I run this on an ASP.Net page:
System.Web.HttpException: DataBinding: 'System.Data.DataRowView' does not contain a property with the name 'startTimes'.
The code works fine when run via the Query Tool on the SQL server (SQL 2005 Std) though it produces two distinct "tables" which I'm guessing is the problem. I've tried variations on the code including creating a 2nd dataset and then attempting a merge (no joy) and I've tried the ".TableName" route but it complains about trying to add the tablename twice.
Thoughts? I need to get this to work - it is part of a reporting component for an application that I'm developing and I'm stuck. Thanks as always...

Hi all,
Does an UPDATE statment lock the entire table or just the rows that will be affected by the UPDATE?
I ask because -
Can I run UPDATE statements in parallel on the same table on the same column. The need for doing this is because the table is a large fact table. I plan to execute the same UPDATE statements on different time sections of the data to expedite the processing.
If the UPDATE statment lock the entire table then I cannot run an UPDATE in parallel. If the UPDATE statement just locks the rows that will be affected then maybe I can because rows affected will be different for each UPDATE.
Let me know.
Thanks,
Vivek

There is a valuable script out there that will take the rows from a table and display INSERT STATEMENTS.
Good thing is this script converts the data to HEXADECIMAL ( or some other ) and we don't have to worry about dealing with apostrophies embedded in varchar fields.

How to create insert statements of the data from a table for top 'n' rows. I know we can create using generate scripts wizard, but we can't customize the number of rows. In my scenario i got a database with 10 tables where every table got millions of records, but the requirement is to sample out only top 10000 records from each table.
I am planning to generate table CREATE statements from GENERATE Scripts wizard and add this INSERT STATEMENT at the bottom.
EX : INSERT [dbo].[table] ([SERIALID], [BATCHID] VALUES (126751, '9100278GC4PM1', )

Hi all,
I have a table which I would like to export to a series of insert statements (in a file maybe). Is this possible somehow?
Alternatively, I could use an existing xml document which contains table metadata (table name, column names, types etc) to transfer data from these particular columns to another database replica.
Thanks,

This table is dropped and recreated each day during a data import job. After the table is recreated and repopulated with data (using a bulk import from a flat file), the index is also recreated using the following code:CREATE INDEX [IX_WON_Staging_EpsEst]
ON [dbo].[WON_Staging_EpsEst](OSID, [Year], Period)
ON [PRIMARY]Yet more often than not, that evening, when the index maintenance job runs, it fails with the aforepasted messages complaining of being unable to find table/index statistics.
Worth noting, perhaps, is that this same process is used on roughly 10 data staging tables in this database each day, and none of the other tables fail during the index maintenance job.
Also worth noting, perhaps, is that this IDENTICAL table/code is processed in exactly the same way on TWO other servers, and the failure has not occured in any of the jobs on those other two servers (these other two servers are identical mirrors of the one failing, and contain all the same data, indicies, and everything else.
Any thoughts, suggestions for where to look, or unrestrained abusive comments regarding my ancestry?
Thanks!
