How To Grant User Permission To Create Other Users?
Jun 26, 2007
There's something I can't quite figure out about user creating
The application that I'm currently working on is interacting with DB, therefore every time you use application you need to login as user which is fine. The problem is that certain users should be able to create new users and the new user may even have the same level of permissions as the one that's creating it ( like admin creating another admin acount or some like that).
Question is how can I allow users to create these user with giving them as few permissions as possible.
If there's is somewhere a code sample on the net I would appreciate the link.

The requirements are:
1. the user has read-only permissions to dbo tales.
2. the user can do everything within the rpt schema, which contains all objects analyzing dbo tables.
3. the user does not have any permission outside rpt schema, except permissions in #1.
The current solutions are:
1. grant the user select only on dbo tables.
2. make the user the owner of rpt schema.
3. Grant the user database permission on create table/create procedure/create view/create function.
My question is - in step 3, should I just grant "Alter" database permission to the user? Granting Alter seems to be cleaner and simpler. According to MSDN,
"Alter" confers the ability to change the properties, except ownership, of a particular securable. When granted on a scope, ALTER also bestows the ability to alter, create, or drop any securable that is contained within that scope.

Hi,
I created a database,login,user and schema like belows.
-- 2. create database
CREATE DATABASE MyTempDatabase;
-- 3. create login
CREATE LOGIN MyTempLogin WITH PASSWORD = '#mytemplogin$',
DEFAULT_DATABASE = MyTempDatabase,
CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF,
CHECK_POLICY = OFF;
--
USE MyTempDatabase;
-- 4. create user
CREATE USER MyTempLogin FROM LOGIN MyTempLogin WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = MyTempSchema;
-- 5. create schema
CREATE SCHEMA MyTempSchema AUTHORIZATION MyTempLogin;
The created user,MyTempLogin, must have permissions that can create tables,drop tables,select,insert,delete,update and bulk insert.
How can I grant permissions to the user?(or schema?)
I failed to grant by T-SQL query.
Additionally, what is purppose of the ROLE? Should I create or use it?
I'm confusing in security concept(login,user,schema,role).
Thanks.

I have a new instance (SQL 2012) and I am trying to create a cube but it retrieves the error: Either the 'NameUser' user does not have permission to create a new object in 'NameServer' or the object does not exist. I am not the DBA but I got privilege as administrator in my instance. I even checked the propierties (right click on the analysis service instance) and in security there is my name as well..

I have a requirement to allow a user to restore a database and then create database users and add them to the db_owner database role. The user must not have sysadmin rights on the server.
The database restore works ok by placing the user in the dbcreator role.
There is a stored procedure to create the database user and alter role membership, I want the user to execute the sp as a different, higher privilege account so as not to give the user underlying permission to create users in the database.
USE [master]
GO
/****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[sp_create_db_users] Script Date: 22/07/2014 13:54:46 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
[Code] ....
The user has execute permission on the stored procedure but keeps getting the error:
Msg 916, Level 14, State 1, Line 2
The server principal "Mydomainadmin1" is not able to access the database "Mydatabase" under the current security context.
Mydomainadmin1 has dbowner to Mydatabase and sysadmin rights for server. If the 'execute as' is changed to 'caller' and run by mydomainadmin1 it works so the issue is between the execute sp and the actual running of the procedure.

Hi all,Before using SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition I did not get this error message. I had been using the trial edition of SQL Server 2000.I only get it with stored procedures.I solved my problem by giving the ASPNET login "db_owner" privs, which I didn't need to with the trial edition and is not best practice from a security angle.I login under the Windows based admin account. (not using mixed mode).Hope someone can shed some light.Thanks.

I am relatively new to sql developer. There is a new user that just joined our organization. I am trying to grant him the same direct grants privilege to the tables that an existing user has. The existing user has a ton of direct table access privileges and it will take days if I had to do each grant one by one like: grant select,insert,delete,update on 'table name' to 'user id'. Is there a way of copying or inserting an existing user's privilege and granting it to a new user.

I have a large table with email column. I need to grant select access to this email column to many users but the actual email should not be visible to those users. I thought of following options:
1.Create an indexed view with that column encrypted and then grant access to users.While searching by email, their search text will also be encrypted and then matched with view column.Problem with this is that I have to create indexed view because most searches will be on Email column and table size is pretty big,20 m records. I don't prefer indexed view in general.
2. Add another column to table with encrypted email and grant access to that column to users. Problem with this is that it will increase table size and i'll need one more index.

A question on the permissions hierarchy:
Since logins, database users, and database roles are both principals and securables - what does it mean to GRANT permission on a login/user/role to another principal? Does it mean that for a login - you can GRANT permission to EXECUTE AS that login or modify it, for example?
