How To Increase The SQL Server Memory

Dec 21, 2004

We are using SQL server 7.0, our users use to connect to SQL server remotely using Visual Basic Application. When all the users are connected it keeps on increasing the memory utilization and at 1,836,848 KB memory utilization it stops increasing the memory i.e memory utilization become stangnet. The actual amount of physical Memory is around 5GB but SQL server dont increase it after the treshhold level and the performance of the server get affected badly. Any one please suggest me the possible solution.

SQL Server Memory Usage Continue To Increase

Dec 28, 2004

Hi,
On the last Sunday 26/12/04 on 20:00 I got on one of our applications in the customer site this error:
"There is insufficient system memory to run this query."

Details:

Computer: IBM XSERIES_345, dual CPU 2.8 Intel xeo, 1,047,952 KB ram, windows 2000 server sp4.
Disk space: 4395 MB, Virtual memory: initial size 1536 MB, Max size 3072 MB. Registry size: current 14 MB, Max 90 MB.

SQL Server 2000 SP 3, two production databases (1) Data size 100 MB, log size 15 MB (2) Data size 500 MB, log size 125 MB
All the memory options are configured as default i.e. dynamically configure for memory and not changes in any sp_configure options.

SQL server is the only major application running on the machine.

Facts:
On that evening the I've checked the Task Manager and found that SQL Server use 500 MB in Mem Usage and 1200 MB in VM size.
In the query analyzer I execute the select query which results the "…insufficient system memory…" error on both databases and on the one with more data it failed with this error, but on the other database it completed successfully.
I restart SQL Server service to solve it, and as for today 28/12/04 at 08:00 it use 590 MB in Mem Usage and 590 MB in VM size.

I have checked the system with Performance monitor and didn't find any problems I use the Memory: Pages/sec, Memory: Available Bytes, Physical Disk: % Disk Time, Processor: % Processor Time, SQL Server Buffer: Buffer Cache Hit Ratio.

We have 8 user connections for one of the database and 16 for the other one.
Our system runs with this configuration for 2 months, I backup the databases FULL, DIFF and LOG backup.
It's not real time system, and the load on the SQL is medium, but we use bad queries as update for all fields in one query (please don't ask…)

I know that SQL server is greedy with the memory and released memory only if other process needs it.

Any ideas why it happens?

Thanks,
Yaniv

Performance Issues Total Server Memory Vs Target Server Memory

Aug 2, 2006

Hi

I did a load testing and found the following observations:

1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.

2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory

Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?

Sql Server 2000 Using Less Memory After More Memory Added

Aug 22, 2007

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

thank you

SQL In-Memory :: Table Memory Optimization Advisor Validation Passed But Cannot Migrate

I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.

I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.

After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:

Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

AWE/Lock Page In Memory Drawbacks? Min/Max Settings, Memory Issues

Oct 11, 2007

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.

Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.

I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.

We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.

1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?

2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?

3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?

4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

Would Max Memory Including SSIS And SSAS Memory

Mar 27, 2008

Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.

My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?

Thanks,
fshguo.

Memory Issues, SSIS Package Out Of Memory Help

Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?

Memory Configurations For SQL Server 2005 EE X64 With SQL Server 2000 EE X32 On Windows Server EE X64 Server

Apr 20, 2007

My server is a dual AMD x64 2.19 GHz with 8 GB RAM running under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 installed. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.

I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?

Increase Number By 1

Sep 2, 2004

Hello all,
I have, what i think, is a unique problem that i'm hoping some of you can help me on.

I need to create a record number that is incremented by 1 whenever someone adds a new record to the database. For example, records numbering 1,2,3 are in the database. When the users adds a new record, SQL takes the last recordno, 3 in this case, and adds 1 to it thus producing 4.

Also, i need to have the ability to replace deleted record numbers with new ones. Using the example above, say a user deletes record number 2. Whenever someone adds a new record, sql would see the missing number and assign the new record that number.

I hope i'm making sense here. Does anyone have any ideas about this? Any articles on the web that someone could point me to?

Thanks.
Richard M.

Increase Scope Of CTE?

Jan 10, 2008

I am really starting to like CTEs. My only qualm is that you can only use them within the first statement after you declare them. I wish they would remain active for the duration of the sql batch just like everything else (variables, local temp tables, ect). Is there any trick so that you can use them multiple times? Maybe define them as a string and do dynamic sql or something like that? Hopefully (i have not researched the new version of sql server) in SQL Server 2008 the scope has increase. Anyways any help would be appreciated.

How To Increase The Maximum No. Of DB Processes?

Sep 4, 1998

I am receiving an error from my ODBC driver “Maximum number of DBPROCESSes already allocated.”

I confirmed that there are 25 connections and that this is the default. This is caused by error message 10029, SQLEDBPS, when the maximum number of simultaneously open DBPROCESS structures exceeds the current setting. I would like to increase this maximum.

I have found only two ways to do this. One is using dbsetmaxprocs using C and the other is using SqlSetMaxProcs using Visual Basic. My problem is that I am interfacing to SQL Server using a third party tool that is doing the lower level programming.

Is there some way that I can increase the maximum number of DB processes for all databases that are part of the SQL Server 7 environment, or can I set this value using a program that is called from a stored procedure?

Any ideas in this area will be greatly appreciated.

Increase Segment Size

Oct 6, 1998

Hi all,
I encountered error 1105 (Can`t allocate space for object .....) while running a query.
I had dump transaction with no log sucessfully and retry running my query but
still encounter error 1105.

I had checked my database size and following are the info:
Datasize : 2500MB Database size available : 753.39
Log space : 500MB Log space available : 500MB (this was acheive after
after dump trans. twice. it was around 480MB before)

Thus looks like the data segment is full!!!
I expanded the size of the disk device D on which the segment device A is on by 50MB. When I did a sp_helpdevice D, the expansion is reflected.
Next I run sp_extendsegement, A, D.
However running sp_helpsegment A doesn`t show that segment A is expanded.
Please help!!! How do I expand the size of the segment? (without creating a new disk device, is it possible)
Any other way to resolve this problem?

Also how to check if a particular segment is full? eg. the %usage of data/log segment.

Thanks in advance.
