How To Insert Only New Records (not Already In Destination)

Feb 14, 2006

Greetings from a SSIS newbie still on the learning curve...

I have a SQL query OLE DB Source that yields a result set that I'd like to put into a SQL Server Destination, but only those records that don't already exist in the destination.

Is there a recommended (read: easy) way to accomplish this? Perhaps a handy transformation?

I have tried to incorporate a subquery in my source query along the lines of:

SELECT fields FROM table1 WHERE keyfield NOT IN (SELECT keyfield from table2)

which works in design time but fails at the server with a cryptic:

"Error: Unable to prepare the SSIS bulk insert for data insertion."

and

"Error: component "<component>" (16) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC0202071."

Don't mean for that to cloud the issue, though. I would appreciate any help given.

Thanks!

Paul

Missing Records In The Replication Destination DB

Nov 26, 2002

Hi Gurus,

We have a SQL 2000 DB1 ( publisher) which is replicated using transactional replcation onto the secondary server DB2 ( subscriber). we have identity columns on the DB1 and we created those tables with 'not for replication' clause. we skipped the following errors in the replication profile '2601:2627:8102:20598'. on DB2 ( the subscriber ) some records are missing in some tables . ( I verified this with record count differences for some tables in both the servers DB1 & DB2.

How to find out what are all the records missing & the cause.

I have listed the msrepl_errors table on DB1 , distribution databases all I'm seeing there are error code 8102 , unable to update identity column.

Any Idea is appreciated.

- Thanks

Delete Records In Destination Table

Jul 2, 2007

Short Question: How do I delete all records from a destination table prior to appending new data to that table?

I am working with a SQL database that was migrated from MS Access. All relationships, primary keys, and identity columns have been set identically to the MS Access database values. The MS Access database is still being used as the database of record until the SQL database is fully functional with front-end, etc.

I want to delete the information stored in all the SQL tables, and then append the MS Access values to the SQL tables. I was able to write delete and append queries in MS Access to correctly transfer data to the SQL tables. However, I would prefer doing this through SSIS because I have several other sources of data to move to a SQL Server database and most of those other sources are not a MS Access database.

Due to relational entegrity settings, I need to delete the records from 8 tables in a specific order. I have tried independent control objects for each of the 8 tables with data flow objects of either "OLE DB Command" or "OLE DB Source" with the SQL command as "Delete From TableName". Results of the debug indicate everything is "green" but no records were deleted fromt the tables.

Update Records: Source And Destination Are The Same

Oct 18, 2007

All,

I am having a brain-fart or something. I need help!!!

I'm developing a transform that selects data from a SQL script, then transforms that data, and then needs to update the data back into the same source table. The transform is working great, but I can't figure out the update table part. I've got it adding the transformed records to the table, but that's not what I need to do. I need to update the table with the changed data.

Any sample code or blog links would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the help!

Delete Records That Don Exist In The Destination

Nov 23, 2006

Hi all,

I am developing an ETL wherein the requirement is to do an incremental load and at the same time, if there is a record that got deleted in the Source delete it from the destination too, makes sense.

The approach am doing is, pick data from the SRC and Destination, pass it onto a Merge join component, do a Full Outer join, then pass the rows to a conditional split. Newly Added records and updated records I can handle, how do I handle the Deleted records?

Am I correct in the way I am doing or there is something better to handle this?

Thanks in advance

How To Save New / Updated Records Only In To Destination Tables

Jun 14, 2006

Hi

I have a requirement like, i need to save all the records from my Flat File on Monthly basis to my database table. In the next month, the flat file may be added with 10-20 records and also some updates happened to my old records. Though the faltfile is same for each month, the changes are occured in some records and also added with few records.

So when i am loading this data in to Database table, i need to just update the changed records and also needs to add the new records. I don't need to touch the remaining records.

How can i do that in SSIS 2005 using different data flow tasks ?

Thanks

HI,

I have been trying to solve the locking problem from past couple of days. Please help mee!!

Scenario:
--------------
I have a SSIS package in which 2 data flow tasks. 1st data flow task deletes records from a 5 tables and the 2nd data flow task should insert records into 1 of the five tables after the success of 1st data flow task. This scenario runs in Transacation.

The above scenrio in the 2nd data flow task hangs in runtime. It does not complete. with sp_who2 command i could see that there is an intent share lock(LK_M_IS) on the table and the status is SUSPENDED.

I dont know how to come out of this locking. Please help.

How To Insert SSIS Variable To OLE DB Destination

The table in new db have extra field that i need to assign it using variable. this is because i have few customer that having different variable value. (meaning for 1 customer, the variable will be fix for all the tables in the database)

my question, without using the Execute Sql Task, can i assign the variable into the the old db destination?

eg my data flow Task is : OLE Db Source - Derived Column - OLE DB Destination.

Example data

Old structure (key = txnID)
---------------------
TxnID
ChequeNo
Bank (chq Bank - Bank in Bank)
Amount

New Structure (key = TxnID & CoCode)

Problems With Parameterized Insert SQL With OLEDB Destination

Feb 28, 2006

Hello,

I've searched around and can't find any references to the problem I'm having. I'd appreciate any ideas or input.

I'm trying to use the OLEDB Destination for an insert at the end of a long data flow. I need to parameterize the input, and for some of the columns I need to use literal values instead of parameters. It seems like this should be the most common thing in the world, but I'm at a loss to get it to work.

I type in the SQL statement just like I would with an OLEDB Command transformation, with the ? character for the appropriate columns in the VALUES clause. However, when I try to use Parse Query I get this error:

"Parameter Information cannot be derived from SQL statements. Set parameter information before preparing command."

OK, so I start searching around for ways to set the parameter information. Nada. On the Mappings tab the parameter list is empty. I check MSDN and it says this:

"If you have entered a parameterized query by using ? as a parameter placeholder in the query text, use the Set Query Parameters dialog box to map query input parameters to package variables."

Set Query Parameters dialog box? I don't see this anywhere. What am I missing?

The options with the SQL Server Destination seem even more limited, as I don't see any way to use a SQL statement or stored procedure.

For the moment I'm going to stub this off with an OLEDB Command transformation with a downstream Trash desintation, but hopefully that's only going to be temporary.

Thanks,
Dan

SSIS Tries To Insert NULL Value Into A Destination Column Ignored In The Mapping.

Jan 12, 2008

Hello everyone,

I am having a little problem with a simple package and I do not know if this is a known issue or that I am missing something.

I have a data flow task, a simple one, with an oledb source pulling data, using a select statement, from a sql server 2005 instance, and an ole db destination pointing to a table in a sql server 2000 instance. Both intances are standard edition. The table in the destination has a column which allow null values and has also a default constraint (getdate()), and this column is not present in the source. When I map the columns in the destination, I leave this column as "ignore", not being mapped to any column from the source. The problem is that when I execute the task, SSIS is trying to insert NULL value into this column, so the package fail with the error "can not insert NULL value into column myColumn". I wonder why is it trying to insert NULL value if the column is not mapped to any column from the source.

Is this a known issue or I am nissing something in the settings?

If the destination table has rowversion or identity columns, there is no problem ar all. I ignore those columns in the mapping and SQL Server feeds them as expected.

Thanks in advance,
Alejandro Mesa

OLE DB Problems - Can SELECT, INSERT But Not UPDATE Or DELETE From The OLE DB Destination

May 16, 2008

Greetings. I have been trying to develop an SSIS package that updates external data (Visual FoxPro tables) from SQL Server 2005. I have tried this various ways: using various Data Flow task components that flow to an OLEB Destination; using an Execute T-SQL Task; and even trying Management Studio interactively with the OpenDataSource('vfpoledb', etc.) statement. For each of these techniques, I have no problem performing a SELECT from the VFP data. Also, I have no problems performing an INSERT of new records using any of these techniques. However, both UPDATE and DELETE of existing records fail.

Is it possible the the OLE DB driver doesn't support UPDATE and DELETE operations? It appears that I'm not allowed to change or delete existing records, only add new ones. Or, are there other techniques I can be trying?

I am aware that updating FoxPro data can be performed by pulling the data from SQL Server into FoxPro. For our purposes, it would be more convenient if the processes could be initiated and managed from the SQL Server side of things instead.

Thanks much,
Randy Witt

SSIS Script Source Destination Insert Null Columns

Dec 1, 2006

Hi I have an SSIS package that retrieves table data from a database using an OLE DB source component.

This then passes the rows of data to a script destination component.

Within this script my code takes the row data and inserts it into the database (amongst other things).

However I have noticed that if any of the Row columns contain nulls then the component falls over with errors when run like so:

[Back Up Prize Banks [2875]] Error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Parameterized Query '(@PASId int,@ScriptName nvarchar(17),@LastModified datetime,@Pri' expects parameter @RegenerateXML, which was not supplied. at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.HandleUserException(Exception e) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.ProcessInput(Int32 inputID, PipelineBuffer buffer) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ManagedComponentHost.HostProcessInput(IDTSManagedComponentWrapper90 wrapper, Int32 inputID, IDTSBuffer90 pDTSBuffer, IntPtr bufferWirePacket)

I have solved the problem by checking the column contents before inserting it as follows:

Before:
Command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@RegenerateXML", Row.RegenerateXML)

After:
If (Row.RegenerateXML_IsNull()) Then
Command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@RegenerateXML",System.DBNull.Value)
Else
Command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@RegenerateXML", Row.RegenerateXML)
End If

Which is great but it does turn 1 line into 5 lines. I have 20 parameters which takes up 20 lines of code which will now be 20 x 5 = 100 lines of code.

My question is :

Is there a better way to write this code without having to take up so many lines?

Thanks

Matt.

OLE DB Destination - Fast Load With Maximum Insert Commit Size

Sep 8, 2006

I'm seeing some strange behavior from the OLE DB Destination when using the "fast load" access mode and setting the "Maximum insert commit size".

When I do not set the "Rows per batch" or the "Maximum insert commit size", the package I'm working with inserts 123,070 rows using a single "insert bulk" statement. The data seems to flow through the pipeline until it gets to the OLE DB Destination and then I see a short pause. I'm assuming the pause is from the "insert bulk" statement handling all of the rows at once.

When I set the "Rows per batch" option but leave the "Maximum insert commit size" alone, I generally see the same behavior -- a single "insert bulk" statement that handles all 123,070. In this case, however, the "insert bulk" statement has a "ROWS_PER_BATCH" option appended to the statement that matches the "Rows per batch" setting. This makes sense. I'm assuming the "insert bulk" then "batches" the rows into multiple insert statements (although I'm unsure of how to confirm this). This version of the "insert bulk" statement appears to run in about the same time as the case above.

When I set the "Maximum insert commit size" option and leave the "Rows per batch" statement alone, I see multiple "insert bulk" statements being executed, each handling the lower of either the value I specify for the "Maximum insert commit size" or the number of rows in a single buffer flowing through the pipeline. In my testing, the number of rows in a buffer was 9,681. So, if I set the "Maximum insert commit size" to 5,000, I see two "insert bulk" statements for each buffer that flows into the OLE DB Destination (one handling 5,000 rows and one handling 4,681 rows). If I set the "Maximum insert commit size" to 10,000, I see a single "insert bulk" statement for each buffer that flows into the OLE DB Destination (handling 9,681 rows).

Now the problem. When I set the "Maximum insert commit size" as described in the last case above, I see LONG pauses between buffers being handled by the OLE DB Destination. For example, I might see one buffer of data flow through (and be handled by one or more "insert bulk" statements based on the "Maximum insert commit size" setting), then see a 2-3 minute pause before the next buffer of data is handled (with its one or more "insert bulk" statements being executed). Then I might see a 4-5 minute pause before the next buffer of data is handled. The pause between the buffers being passed through the OLE DB Destination (and handled via the "insert bulk" statements) is sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.

Using Profiler, I don't see any other activity going on within the database or within SQL Server itself that would explain the pauses between the buffers being handled by the OLE DB Destination and the resulting "insert bulk" statements...

Can anyone explain what is going on here? Is setting the "Maximum insert commit size" a bad idea? What are the differences between it and the "Rows per batch" setting and what are the recommended uses of these two options to try to improve the performance of the insert (particularly when handling millions of rows)?

TIA for any thoughts or information...

Slow Running Insert After Changing OLE DB Destination Data Access Mode

Jan 4, 2007

Hello,

In a Data Flow Task, I have an insert that occurs into a SQL Server 2000 table from a fixed width flat file. The SQL Server table that the data goes into is accessed through an OLE DB connection manager that uses the Native OLE DBMicrosoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server.

In the OLE DB Destination, I changed the access mode from Table or View - fast load to Table or View because I needed to implement OLE DB Destination Error Output. The Error output goes to a SQL Server 2000 table that uses the same connection manager.

The OLE DB Destination Editor Error Output 'Error' option is configured to 'Redirect' the row. 'Set this value to selected cells' is set to 'Fail component'.

Was changing the access mode the simple reason why the insert from the flat file takes so much longer, or could there be other problems?

Thank you for your help!

How Do I Call A Insert Stored Procedure From A Data Flow Destination Object?

I want to insert data calling a stored procedure and call this from a Data Flow destination object. Is it possible?

I understand that Ole Db Command transformation object can call stored procedure, but that will not rollback in the event of error in the middle.

I understand that Ole Db Destination object will rollback in middle of import, but I don't see how to do the insert by calling stored procedure. "Sql Command" option in Ole Db Destination object does not seem to present solution to the problem.

Am I missing something here or is Ssis / Microsoft demanding that Insert stored procedure not be used when using Data Flow destination object to insert data into target table?

I have the following (simplified):

1. Flat File Source
2. Conditional Split, Case Good = !ISNULL(KEY) Case Error = ISNULL(KEY)
3. Case Good -> Writes to Good Flat File (with timestamp in the title)
4. Case Error -> Writes to Error Flat File (with timestamp in the title)

Most job runs have no errors but the error file is created as a zero byte file anyway. If there are no error records I don't want the error file created. How might I accomplish this?

Mutiple Random Source To Mutiple Respective Destination - Update And Insert

Sep 5, 2007

Hello All

Firstly thanks a lot Phil and Jamie on such a helpful article on "Checking to see if a record exists and if so update else insert"

Here is my question

I have about 10 tables and there respective working tables
For examples: A, B, C, D, E.... and WorkA, WorkB, WorkC....

Notes:
1) When I execute a package these work table (Work A, WorkB ...) get populated with certain rows say about 5
2) Its not that all the work table are populated on every execution.
3) Tables A, B, C... have thousands of records in it.
4) Work table is of same structure as there parent table..Like WorkA same structure as A.....
5) The table A and WorkA and as on... are linked with a KeyID

Now I want to build a SSIS package that can
1) Get the the data from these multiple tables(WorkA, WorkB...)
2) Process each row of these tables WorkA, WorkB..
3) Depending upon the KEYID of WorkA., WorkB.. etc Update a Flag colunm of table A, B...where the KeyID is equal to KeyID of Work Table
4) After updating insert that processed row of Work A, WorkB ...into Table A, B..

I can do this if I have one source table and one destination table. Here i have some say 10 randomly source tables to respective random destination .
All I could think of creating 10 different packages as adviced in Jamie's article. But I am sure there might some other alternative.

Can somebody advice me the best practice of doing this. Thanks a lot in advance

Bulk Insert Task Failing On Data Type Conversion For A Destination Column Of Type Bit

Jul 6, 2006

I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.

I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.

I hope someone can help me work through this.

Insert Data Into A Destination Column Which Doesnt Have An Input Column

Feb 27, 2008

Hi, I was wondering how I can complete a column (which doesnt have an input one) with data.
For example:

I have a sql query which bring data of 3 columns

ID | FISRT NAME | LAST NAME
1 MIKE MORGAN
2 SARA JOHANES

So, I will insert that data in a FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, which I configured with 3 columns and I did the corresponding mapping in the FLAT FILE DESTINTATION.

Now, If I add one more column in the FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, I will not have it mapped to a input one, obviously. So, what I need is to add one more column to the flat file destination and complete it with zeros values in it.

Probably I can solve this part by introducing a DERIVED COLUMN and there I can configure the zeros that I want to add to the column. But I'm not sure if I can do that without having a input column.
So, the question will be, how can I add one column to a flat file which doesnt have a input and introduce any value that I want to it?
Hope I was clear
Thanks for your help.

Insert Records

Mar 4, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to insert 200 records on a table that has two fields:
TagID and Name. TagID is a Unique Identifier and is not generated in the table. I created some code but is not working and I am a little bit confused:

declare@i integer
select @i = 1

while @i <= 800
begin
insert into Tags (TagID, [name])
values(newid(), select ('Tag ' + right('000' + convert(varchar(3), @i), 3)))
select@i = @i + 1
end

Could someone tell me how to solve this?

Thanks,
Miguel
