How To Know The Size Used By A Record In A Table

Jan 24, 2008

Hi,

I need a query to know (calculate) the size used by a record in a field by table, I was tried with the follow query (but this only show me the max length of the data type):

SELECT c.name AS column_name
,c.column_id
,t.name AS type_name
,c.max_length
,c.precision
,c.scale
FROM sys.columns AS c
JOIN sys.types AS t ON c.user_type_id=t.user_type_id
WHERE c.object_id = OBJECT_ID('dbo.bloqueos_2005')
ORDER BY c.column_id;
GO

I was tried whit the system views that contains column info, but no one give me the correct information.

If any one have the query or know some way to do this, please help me.

Thanks,

Diego Jaramillo Celis

How do I calculate the Record size? I mean the Row size for each table.
I heard that there are formulas to do that and the calculation is different for Fixed lenght Columns and Variable length Columns.

I need to calculate the record size for nearly 500 tables. This will help me to decide on the DISk capacities.

Suggest me if any scipts or calculations already available.

Thanks in advance.

Record Size More Than 8060B

Jun 6, 2006

Hi,In MS SQL Server, while creating the table, I am getting a warningmessage saying like "maximum row size can exceed allowed maximum sizeof 8060 bytes".Is there any way in SQL Server, to increase this allowed maximum rowsize? The setting like "set ANSI_WARNINGS OFF" is not suitable in my case. Ineed creation of table with around 11000 bytes in the record (Summationof precision of all the columns). And more over, I do not want to looseany data (truncation) in inert operation to keep on the whole recordsize to 8060B.Thanks a lot in advance.Ramakrishna.

How To Calculate Average Row Size Of A Record.

Apr 22, 2008

I want to calculate average row size of a record. By based on this i want to add some more columns into an existing table. Here is my table structureCREATE TABLE patient_procedure(    proc_id int IDENTITY(1,1) CONSTRAINT proc_id_pri_key PRIMARY KEY,    patient_id int NULL,    surgeon_name varchar(40) NOT NULL,    proc_name varchar(20) ,    part_name varchar(30),    wth_contrast int ,    wthout_contrast int ,    wth_wthout_contrast int,    xray_part varchar(60),    arth_area varchar(30),    others varchar(30) ,    cpt varchar(20) ,    procedure_date smalldatetime NOT NULL,    mraloperrun varchar(20),CONSTRAINT patientid_foreign_key FOREIGN KEY(patient_id)    REFERENCES dbo.patient_information (Patient_id)) Now i got a requirement that i have to add two more procedures with different columns. The columns overall size is 195 bytes.I can place those two procedures as seperate tables. I dont want to do that becuase of front end requirements. Here the problem is when the user enters these two procedures information remaining fields will store the  null value. I know that when we store the null values into corresponding columns min of 1 byte will be occupied. Please suggest me that shall i include these columns into the above table. If i add these columns is performance will be decreased or not. Waiting for valuable suggestions.

Real Size Of Record In Database.

Let's imagine some situation in MS SQL 2005:
Table t_sample with single column SampleString of type varchar(200). If to this column will be inserted value containing 4 chars, real record (not column) size in database would be 4 or 200? In other words: do MS SQL 2005 records have always constant size (total size of all columns max sizes) or real size of record depends on actual size of inserted data?

Table Size And Database Size

Mar 2, 2008

Hi,
i use this script that show me the size of each table and do the sum of all the table size.

SELECT
X.[name],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[rows]), 1), '.00', '') AS [rows],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[reserved]), 1), '.00', '') AS [reserved],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[data]), 1), '.00', '') AS [data],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[index_size]), 1), '.00', '') AS [index_size],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[unused]), 1), '.00', '') AS [unused]
FROM
(SELECT
CAST(object_name(id) AS varchar(50)) AS [name],
SUM(CASE WHEN indid < 2 THEN CONVERT(bigint, [rows]) END) AS [rows],
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved)) * 8 AS reserved,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS data,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, used) - CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS index_size,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved) - CONVERT(bigint, used)) * 8 AS unused
FROM sysindexes WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE sysindexes.indid IN (0, 1, 255)
AND sysindexes.id > 100
AND object_name(sysindexes.id) <> 'dtproperties'
GROUP BY sysindexes.id WITH ROLLUP) AS X
ORDER BY X.[name]

the problem is that the sum of all tables is not the same size when i make a full database backup.
example of this is when i run this query against my database i see a sum of 111,899 KB that they are 111MB,but when
i do full backup to that database the size of this full backup is 1.5GB,why is that and where this size come from?

Could anybody help me with the following scenario:

Table 1 Table2

ID,Date1 ID, Date2

I would like to link the two tables and receive all records from table2 joined on ID and the record from table1 that has the most recent date.

Example:

Table1 data Table2 Data

ID Date1 ID Date2
31 1/1/2008 31 1/5/2008
34 1/4/3008 31 4/1/2008
31 3/2/2008

The first record in table2 would only link to the first record in table1
The second record in table2 would only link to the third record in table1

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

INSERT New Record Works OK In Local Table, BUT Not If The Target SS DB/table Is In A Different Physical Server

Apr 23, 2008

Hi... I was hoping if someone could share me some thoughts with the issue that I am having at the moment.

Problem: When I run the package in my local machine and update local SS DB/table - new records writes OK in the table. BUT when I changed my destination meaning write record into another physical SS DB/table there is no INSERT data occurs. AND SO when I move/copy over that same package into another server (e.g. server that do not write record earlier) and run it locally IT WORKS fine too.

What I am trying to do is very simple - Add new records in a SS table using SSIS . I only care for new rows and not even changed rows.
Here is my logic -
1. Create Ole DB source to RemoteSERVER - using SELECT stmt
2. I have LoopUp component that will look for NEW records - Directs all rows that don't find match and redirect rows (error output).
3. Since I don't care for any rows that is matched in my lookup - I do nothing or I trash the rows
4. I send the error rows (NEW rows) into OleDB destination

RESULTS when I run the package locally and destination table is also local - WORKS FINE;
But when I run the package locally and destination table is in another Sserver (remote) - now rows is written.

The package is run thru BIDS manually so there is no sucurity restrictions attached to it.

I am not sure what I am missing. And I do not see error in my package either. It is not failing.

Thanks in advance!

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Which Import statement I need to use to for Oracle database. I am using a OLE DB Connection.

any idea?

Transact SQL :: Insert A Record Into Second table Where There Is Not A Match In First Table

Jun 25, 2015

SELECT [metal] FROM [ProductionDatabase].[dbo].[Metalurgy]
EXCEPT
SELECT [metal] FROM [TestDatabase].[dbo].[Metalurgy]

This gives me a list of records from [Production].[dbo].[Metalurgy] which do not reside in [TestDatabase].[dbo].[Metalurgy].  Now, I need to use that list to insert missing records into [TestDatabase].[dbo].[Metalurgy].  How can I modify the above code to INSERT the missing records?

As a business logic we need to subtract start_calltime of new record from end_calltime of previous record and do some calculations. These calculations have to be done for all the calls where endcalltime(of a record)-startcall(timeof a different record )meet a criteria.

Table Size

Mar 1, 2002

I have some question and would like ask experts:

The largest table in our database eats up above 4G . we do "sp_spaceused" for this table. The length of all columns of this table ( just int, char, varchar, money ,numeric fields types) is about 200 bytes, and the table has around 1,300,000 rows, but the reserved spaced for this table is 4,800,000kb and the data space is around 4,600,00kb.

How can average each row take 3.7kb ( the total size of all columns just 200 bytes)? Any other things I need check?
Any one can give any suggestion what cause this problem? or it is normal?

Thank you very much.

Is there a practical size limit, in MB's, of a table in SQL Server 6.5?

Is there a size, that once exceeded, degrades performance signifigantly?

I am speaking of raw megabytes. The table in question will consist of only 3 int columns but has the possiblity of becoming VERY LARGE (+1,000,000 rows). I am still in the design phase and can change my strategy if this will prove to be a problem.

Table Size.

Jan 14, 1999

hello all,

I am trying to solve this problem for quite some time.. I was wondering if I can get some help..

These questions are all abt. MSSQL 6.5

1. Is there a limit on the size of the table ?
2. Does it make sense to have more tables if the size of the row size is more that the limit set by 6.5 or i should let have more rows in a different table with duplicate entries for a particular field.
3. What is the number of rows before the performance of a query starts getting affected..

Thanks..
