ODBC Link From Access To SQL Server 2005 Stored Function

Sep 20, 2006

If I define a table-valued function in a SQL Server 2005 database, can I link to it from Access 2003 using ODBC?

I've defined the function successfully, and I can link from Access to tables in the database (so my ODBC link is basically functioning), but I can't see the table-valued function in the Linked Table Manager in Access.

I can define a pass-through query to grab the table, but with a pass-through query I have to provide the ODBC password every time.

What am I missing?

Suggestions?

How To Restrict Editing Of SQL Server 2005 Data Via ODBC Link?

Apr 25, 2007

I have a sql server 2005 database with Delphi 2006 in the front end and for querrying and reporting we use MS Access 2003 by connecting to this database via ODBC connection. I recently found out that the SQL Server 2005 data connected thus can be edited (updated) from MS Access. I do not want end users to modify/update the SQL Server 2005 data from MS Access while I also want them to have the ability to insert/update/delete rights using the appropriate application interface. For now, I am handling this by creating a user id that is not permitted to update, insert and delete and using the same account in the ODBC. Is there a way in SQL Server 2005 you can control insert/update/delete rights for all users that will be applicable only in the ODBC mode?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2005 Connection Crashes With Multiple User Clicking Same Link.

Mar 16, 2008

Hi,
I just developed a ASP.NET website with SQL Server 2005 as database. I am having connection crash problem when multiple user click on same link to fetch data from the database. If users click on different links or there is few seconds of time gap between the data access, then it works fine. But the connections crash problem only occurs when 2 or more users click same link at same time.
I am using the following kind of Datalayers to access the data from database:
public static ContentInformation GetContentForUpdate(int ContentId)
{
ContentInformation result = new ContentInformation(); ;
SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand();
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
command.Connection = Connection;
command.CommandText = "Content_GetContentForUpdate1";
SqlParameter parameter = new SqlParameter("@ContentId", SqlDbType.Int);
parameter.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
parameter.Value = ContentId;
command.Parameters.Add(parameter);
try
{
command.Connection.Open();
SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.SingleRow);

if (reader.Read())
{
// read the data
}
reader.Close();
}
catch (SqlException ex)
{
Trace.TraceError(ex.Message);
throw ex;
}
finally
{
command.Connection.Close();
}
return result;
}
I would be really grateful if someone can help me out with this problem. Waiting for the soonest reply. Thanks.

3. What is the best configuration for running SQL Server 2005 when we have old 2000 databases? Upgade or not upgrade?

SQL Server 2005: Copying Tables And Stored Procedures Between Databases On Same Server

Mar 5, 2008

This question is about SQL Server 2005:
I have been trying to figure out how to copy tables and stored procedures between 2 databases (on the same server) using SQL Server Management Studio. I have tried right clicking on the table name, "script table as", "drop to", "clipboard", then I click on the 2nd database, and then click on the "tables" . I change the name of the database and click "execute". This creates the table but does not copy the data. I have also tried "create to" "clipboard" and "insert to" "clipboard" and cannot seem to be able to figure out how to get the results that I want. I am new at this but need to get the tables with the data copied along with the stored procedures, even if I have to do them one at a time. When I was using SQL Server 2000, I was able to use DTS to copy objects to other databases easily. Can someone please tell me a way to accomplish what I need to do? I have gotten information here before that was very useful and was hoping that someone can help me again.Thank you so much. Carol Quinn

Creating Databases On WinXP SP2 With SQL Server 2005 CE RC

Nov 28, 2006

Hi,

For various reasons a new desktop application I am developing is using the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Release Candidate to store local data. On my development machine (XP SP2, VS2005, SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition) the software is able to create the database file, and read and write to it fine.

However on our test machine, which does not have any of the development tools the software is unable to create the database. A System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException is thrown. The message is: "SQL Mobile usage is restricted on this platform. To use SQL Mobile, you must install SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, or the Tablet PC SKU." Obviously this goes somewhat against the blurb for SQL Server CE.

Is this something that will be fixed shortly? Or is it the intention that databases can't be created on machines that do not SQL Server or Visual Studio installed? (Incidentally the reason for creating the database on the fly is that we are encrypting it, using the users credentials, so that only they can open the database.)

Thanks, Steve

Creating Sql Server 2005 Express Databases Via VS2005 Std.

Dec 5, 2007

This post is an extension onto the one below....
Please read my question at the bottom... cheers

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sept. 26th 2006

Hello all,

I use Visual Studio 2005 Standard. I would like to know the best way that I can create Sql Server 2005 Express databases visually since VS2005 Std. does not allow me to do it.
Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance,

- Noble Bell

I'd be interested in knowing how VS doesn't allow you to create a database. What error are you getting?
There are two ways to create databases, depending on your goal:

To just create a database on your server, do the following:

Open the Server Explorer
Right-click on Data Connections
Click Create New SQL Server Database
Specify Server Name and Database Name

Your database will be created and you can start working with it.

Embed a database in your project:

On the Project menu, click Add New Item.
Select SQL Database from the list and give it a name.
Click OK

This will run you thorugh a wizard to create the database.
If your having problems doing either of these, you may not have SQL Server installed on your computer or VS might be pointing to the wrong Instance Name. Check out the Option dialog under Database Tools:ata Connection and verify that the correct instance is specified.

- Mike Wachel - MSFT

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am trying to create a similar project and I also recieve an error while trying to create a database...

"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this
failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could Not Open A Connection to SQL Server."

Now let me explain what i am trying to do ...
I am trying to create a web interface for the data that I want to store in the SQL database. I have installed VS2005 & SQL Server Express 2005 on my local machine. I want to develope this project on my local machine and then transfer it to a server once i have finished the project.

If i am doing this all wrong, please let me know !
