How To Manage Different Input (Excel Files) Format

Jun 21, 2006

Hi all,

I have created a package which import data from excel file and do some technical & business validation on the data. My package has about 20 control flow items. Now I'm asked to handle a second (and probably more in the future) excel file format (columns name are different, some fields are murged in one single column...).

I definitely don't want to create a different package for each excel file format. But I can't find a way in the control flow to execute a particular DataFlow in one case and another DataFlow in other cases. Typically I would like to evaluate an expression an depending on the result execute a DataFlow or another one. Even in a given DataFlow I cant find a way to have a condition and process different Excel Source depending on an expression result. Or it would be good if I could say to my Excel Source to discover the columns name and types at runtime and let me manage the columns manually in the data flow. Is that possible ? I know SSIS manage metadata on the columns based on the data source is there any way to manage the metadata manually ? I coulnd't find anything about that in BOL.

I guess an easy workaround is to have a different package just to import the different excel files in a common staging table and each package calls a single package which contains all technical & business validation.

Any help will be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Sébastien.

How To Dynamically Generate Excel Files For The SQL Query Input?

May 22, 2008

Hi,

There is one manual process done by my friend. The process is " In query analyser, she runs a sql query and the resultset of Sql query, she copies and pastes into a excel workbook".

I wanted to write a SSIS package to automate it and providing a UI, in which she can give connection details and paste the SQL query and the package will in turn generate excel workbook in the target path". I thought of trying ExecuteSQL task, but the output resultset of ExecuteSQL task cannot be mapped dynamically to excel source(correct me if I am wrong). If I use Dataflow task, then also whether dynamic mapping of SQL output to Excel destination input is possible?

Can you please tell me the best approach for achieving the above functionality?

Thanks,

Create, Insert And Format Into 1,000 Excel Files

Feb 24, 2008

Hello,

I need to create about 1,000 (literately) Excel files that each contain 5 tabs. The data being placed on the tabs will always be the same (meaning the columns are static).
I am fairly advanced at Excel VBA so I can write code that does all the following in Excel (looped 1,000 times):

Open an Excel template

Bring data in from the tables

Filter, then copy-paste the appropriate rows into each tab.

Save the new Excel file.

Email the file to appropriate individual (it is a Microsoft Exchange Server).
As I started this in VBA, I thought that I might be able to do it with SSIS. My concern is I need to have the rows formatted (font, border, etc.) and the number of rows change.

My questions are:
Is it possible to format Excel with SSIS?
Can I email the files even if it is not with an SMTP protocol?
Would SSIS process this data faster then Excel?
Does this approach even make sense? Am I better just doing it with VBA?

Thank you for the help.

How To Load Several Excel Files In The Same Database (same Structure, But Column Format Different)

May 30, 2008

Hello,

Here's my need :
In one directory there's several excels file. Theses file have the same structure :
col : LOOKID, LOOKNAME, ASMPID, ASMPNAME, LOOKTYPE, LTYP_NAME, PAR_TYPE, PTYP_NAME, PARAMETER, VALUE.
The problem is that the cell format of the PARAMETER col. is different bewteen excel files. It could be date, numeric, ... The col destination in sqlservr database is Varchar(10).

I've created the ssis package with a ForEach Loop, and in the ForEach loop I've created a Data Flow Task.
In the data Flow Task I've created an excell source file (using excel file with col PARAMETER in date format) with an OLE DB destination.

When I launch the package on the same excel file as the one using to create Excel Source object it's OK, no errors, and data in the sql table are OK.
But when I launch the package on Excel file with col. PARAMETER in numeric format, there's no execution errors, but in the destination table the value of the PARAMETER col. is transform in date format.

I tried to change in Excel source object the datatype of the input PARAMETER col, but I've got some compilations errors. It seems that SSIS recognize automaticaly excel source data type col. But may be I did something wrong in the excel source settings ?
Is there a way to force the excel source datatype with varchar(10) ?

I've also tried to do the treatment with an script task but my vb.net knowledge isn't enought to do that.

If you have some suggestions, I'm listening.

Thanks

Howto Work And Manage Backup Log Files???

Apr 13, 2004

Hello everybody,

I have run into some problems with logfiles and backup logfiles (MS SQL server). I have read much about them but uptil now I dont seem to grasp how it works. Specially the part of working with backup log files.

Can someone please help me with this?

What I want todo is to create backup log files, so I can restore the database to any point in time before a failure occured. But using this method create's a problem with the backup log files. They get very big.

So how can I use backup log files without getting to large backup log files?

How can I shrink on a regular basis the backup log files and still be able to restore the database?

Please help.

I am using SQL Server Express and Visual Web Developer Express with VB as my preferred language.
I am trying to specify an InsertParameter with a querystring parameter of a SQLDataSource Control.
My Code is:
<InsertParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="ProjectID" Type="Int32" DefaultValue="Convert.ToInt32(Label1.Text)" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Name" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Description" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Size" Type="Int32" />
</InsertParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
I get the error message above and the detail is:

I've been workin on this a while and hope I just missed something simple. I have a login page that looks in the db for the rec_id that has the correct un/pw combo. Simple u'd think but I keep getting that error. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Private Sub CheckUser(ByVal CurrentSQLCommand As SqlCommand)
'Declare vars for user and pass. Not needed now but will be used for input checking later
Dim strUN As String = txtUN.Text
Dim strPW As String = txtPW.Text

CurrentSQLCommand.Parameters.Item("@un").Value = strUN
CurrentSQLCommand.Parameters.Item("@pw").Value = strPW

SqlConnection1.Open()
Dim datareader As SqlDataReader = CurrentSQLCommand.ExecuteReader
While datareader.Read
If datareader.HasRows Then
txtID.Text = datareader(0)
If txtR.Text = 3 Then
Response.Redirect("hcprov.aspx?id=" & txtID.Text)
ElseIf txtR.Text = 2 Then
Response.Redirect("hcprof.aspx?id=" & txtID.Text)
ElseIf txtR.Text = 1 Then
Response.Redirect("hca.aspx?id=" & txtID.Text)
End If
'CreateTicket()
ElseIf Not datareader.HasRows Then
txtUN.Text = ""
txtPW.Text = ""
lblError.Text = "This User/Pass combo is not valid please try again!"
lblError.Visible = True
End If
datareader.Close()
SqlConnection1.Close()
End While
End Sub

SELECT REC_ID
FROM dbo.HCPROFESSIONAL
WHERE (UN = @un) AND (PW = @pw)

Input String Was Not In A Correct Format

Nov 5, 2005

I am trying to do an insert into a SQL server table but I am getting an "input string was not in correct format" error.  Does this error always refer to SQL string problem?  I put in a breakpoint and looked at the SQL and it looks good but until I figure this out I will be tracing through the code.  Any input greatly appreciated.  MyCmd.CommandText = sSQL     MyCmd.ExecuteNonQuery()  'Line where I get the errorThanks,Joe

Input String Was Not In A Correct Format?

Aug 24, 2007

Code SnippetSQL: select max(id) from t1
Input string was not in a correct format.
at System.Number.StringToNumber(String str, NumberStyles options, NumberBuffer& number, NumberFormatInfo info, Boolean parseDecimal)
at System.Number.ParseInt64(String value, NumberStyles options, NumberFormatInfo numfmt)

at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcDataReader.GetValue(Int32 i)
at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcCommand.ExecuteScalar()

really strange error

this is the table t1
name varchar
id bigint

select name from t1 works.
select id from t1 gave me the same error as above too.

Is it because of its compatible with odbc connection for SQL Server 2005?

what is causing the problem?

Further updates!!
select id from t1 works if data type is int instead of bigint !!!
is this a problem with the SQL Server driver?

I'm connecting to the database via ODBC DSN by the way.
OS is Windows Server 2003.

Thanks,
Max

How To Format The Date Data Type Input In DD-MM-YY

Mar 4, 2004

hi all , does SQL server able to input the date that is originally from 2/6/2004 11:07:46 AM to DD-MM-YY 06-02-04 and store in the DB. For example , this is the SQL insert query

INSERT INTO ADMIN ( ID , NAME , DATE ) VALUES ( 'A001' , 'karen' ,'2/6/2004 11:07:46 AM')

the date will automatically converted to 06-02-04 and store in DB .

Does it need to use SQL Rule or user-defined data type.

Input String Was Not In A Correct Format For Formatted Currency

Nov 17, 2005

Ok, when I bind a textbox in my FormView I'm changing the format to
currency (<%# Bind("TotalValue","{0:c}") %>).  When I click
Update I get "Input string was not in a correct format" since
TotalValue is Int32 data type.

Shouldn't it convert it back to Int32 when it updates the db?  Or do I have to do it manually, and if so how?

DTS Export To Excel (How To Format Results In Excel)

Nov 22, 2005

Hi All

I've been googling this for a while now and can't seem to find any elegant answers.

I'm looking for an automated way to present a FORMATED Excel Spreadsheet to the Customer from a stored procedure output.

Can anyone advise me the best method of doing this - should I / can I assign an Excel Template to the DTS Task output ?

His mind is set on Excel and the formatting is basic and easy to write in a Macro which I've done, but this requires human interaction to finish the task (Automated Run Once on opening etc).

In an ideal world an individual would send an email to the Server with two formated parameters (@FromDate & @ToDate) and would be emailed back a ready formatted S/Sheet. But I believe he would be willing to just select the relevant SpreadSheet for the Daily / Weekly / Monthly periods dumped.

Thanks

Bcp Unicode Files Using Format Files

Jul 20, 2005

I have a problem with bcp and format files.We changed our databases from varchar to nvarchar to support unicode. Noproblems so fare with that. It is working fine.But now I need a format file for the customer table and and it is notworking. It is working fine with the old DB with varchar, but withnvarchar I'm not able to copy the data. The biggest problem is, that Igot no error message. BCP starts copying to table and finished withouterror message.This is my table:CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Customer] ([ID] [int] NOT NULL ,[CreationTime] [datetime] NULL ,[ModificationTime] [datetime] NULL ,[DiscoveryTime] [datetime] NULL ,[Name_] [nvarchar] (255) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI NULL ,[Class] [int] NULL ,[Subclass] [int] NULL ,[Capabilities] [int] NULL ,[SnapshotID] [int] NOT NULL ,[CompanyName] [nvarchar] (255) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI NOTNULL ,[TargetRCCountry] [nvarchar] (255) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AINOT NULL ,[LocationID] [int] NULL ,[MirrorID] [binary] (16) NULL ,[DeleteFlag] [bit] NULL ,[AdminStatus] [bit] NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOand this is the format file:8.0131 SQLINT 1 12 "#~@~#" 1 ID ""2 SQLDATETIME 1 24 "#~@~#" 2 CreationTime ""3 SQLDATETIME 1 24 "#~@~#" 3 ModificationTime ""4 SQLDATETIME 1 24 "#~@~#" 4 DiscoveryTime ""5 SQLNCHAR 2 510 "#~@~#" 5 Name_SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS6 SQLINT 1 12 "#~@~#" 6 Class ""7 SQLINT 1 12 "#~@~#" 7 Subclass ""8 SQLINT 1 12 "#~@~#" 8 Capabilities ""9 SQLINT 1 12 "#~@~#" 9 SnapshotID ""10 SQLNCHAR 2 510 "#~@~#" 10 CompanyNameSQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS11 SQLNCHAR 2 510 "#~@~#" 11 TargetRCCountrySQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS12 SQLINT 1 12 "#~@~#" 12 LocationID ""13 SQLBINARY 1 33 "#~@~#

SSIS: Merge Problem: The Input Is Not Sorted (for Use In Exporting A Multi-record Format File)

Feb 21, 2008

I am using the following useful article regarding exporting a multi-record file:
http://vsteamsystemcentral.com/cs21/blogs/steve_fibich/archive/2007/09/25/multi-record-formated-flat-file-with-ssis.aspx

I have created the 2 datasources, ordering each on a field commmon to both.

I have created the two derived columns headers and am now moving on to the merge.

It is failing with the following error:
"the input is not sorted"

And whilst I definitely have an order by on the query, when I look at the metadata between the datasource and the derived column, the Sort Key Position items displays "0" for all my fields, I was expecting the sort field to have a "1" in this column. What am I missing?

Any help would be most appreciated!
