How To Match The Exact Characters In A Data Field In SQL 2005 Developer
Aug 1, 2007
Could anyone help of how to match the exact characters in a data field in SQL 2005 Developer.
For example, if one has a password "GooD", then when he or she enters "GOOD", "good", etc, the database will not match the password. And he or she must enter the exact characters, which is "GooD".
Thanks.

Hi,
This is strange....
I am getting my source data from another system am storing the SaleAmount of each product in a field the data type of which is [decimal](12, 2).
For some products I am getting an exact match (upto 2 decimal places) as compared with my source data BUT for some other products the value before the decimal places is correct but the 2 digits after the decimal place does not match with the source data
Even if this sounds stupid, can you please guide me. Am i missing some very basic and common sense thing?
Many TIA.

I have a very basic Lookup in my SSIS package that looks up against two columns and outputs a row to a table. Now currently if there is no exact match, it writes a null in my destination table. How do I simply drop all those rows that dont produce an exact match? I tried using the 'Ignore' error output, but with that it writes NULLS into my destination table. With the 'Redirect' it is looking for a place to redirect the error (NULL) rows, and I dont want to deal with the hassle or writing these NULL values to a file or table just to delete them afterwards. I just simply want to forget about all those rows that dont produce an exact hit and only fill in the destination table with those that do produce a hit. How can I drop these lookup rows that dont produce an exact match?

Hi,
I am tryin to run an SSIS package from an Excel Spreadsheet to MS SQL Server 2005.
I receive the error: Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page (full report is below).
I found this thread: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2562259&SiteID=1
and have set the destination column to nvarchar(max), and I have also set the TruncationRowDisposition = RD_IgnoreFailure on the destination column, with no luck.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi,
I have tried to extract data from Pervasive SQL into MS SQL Server using DTS. Due to the server has been set as Chinese language region, the MS SQL is also set as 'Chines_PRC_CI_AS' by default. After the successful extraction and transfer, I have exported the data out to Excel format. Due to different location, I have copy and transfer the data into another reporting server which is having MS SQL 2005.
When trying to import the data into the server, it prompted an error '[Data Conversion 1 [168]] Error: Data conversion failed while converting column "DESC" (166) to column "Copy of DESC" (187). The conversion returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.". '. After checking and finding, I found it was due to the chinese characters that are contained inside the data files.
I have tried to change the collation setting inside MS SQL 2005 with the same setting as the MS SQL 2000, but it still not working. Please help and advice.
Thank you and cheers.
Best regards,
Francis

I'm trying to import data in Excel into SQL Server table which you would think would be an absolute doddle seeing as they're both key Microsoft products in the BI family..One of the columns in Excel spreadsheet is Comments1 and a couple of the values in this column are over 300 characters in length yet when I set up the Excel source and then open Advanced Editor and look at Input and output properties this column has a data-type of Unicode string [DT_WSTR] with length of 255 which leads to the truncated error in the title.
I've researched this and on find going into the registry and updating the TypeGuessRows value from 8 to zero. I've done this and yet the data-type is still showing as Unicode string [DT_WSTR] with length of 255. I've even moved the row with the largest number of characters to the top of the spreadsheet and changed the TypeGuessRows value to 1 but the data-type still stays the same.I can't believe that it's soooo difficult to import data from one of Microsoft's key BI applications to another using their 'world-class' integration tool.

Can someone here confirm or deny that Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition doesn't work with SQL Server Developer Edition 2005?
I
was about to order SQL Server Developer Edition 2005 on Amazon, to use
with Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, when I read a user comment that
the two are incompatible with each other. Does anyone know for sure if
that is true?
What I'm wanting to do is develop an ASP.NET web
application on a web host using a SQL Server database. I use VS2003 and SQL
Server Enterprise 2000 at work, but I'd like to learn the 2005 editions
for this side project. I don't own any of the developer tools/IDEs
personally, so I'm trying to find the most affordable way to do this
for my home business.
Thanks for any advice,
Keith

Hello,
I have a table with a column that is currently a varchar(50), but I want to convert it into an int. When I try to just change the type in design mode I get an error that conversion cannot proceed. When I look at the field it appears some of the entries have special characters appended at the end, I see a box after the value.
How can I remove all speical characters and then convert that field to an int?
Also I tried the following query which did not work as well, same error about conversion.
UPDATE myTable SET field = CAST(field AS int)

There are conflicting postings everywhere about this. I built a small site using VWD and SQL Server Express, but need to convert to Sql Server 2005 Developer because the DB will exceed 4Gb. Tried to install and could not connect or use from VWD. Tried to uninstall, got into large mess with the byzantine uninstall process, and have now started with a clean machine.
I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer first, then installed VWD Express 2008 without installing SQL Server Express. VWD won't let me connect to an existing database, won't let me add a new database and doesn't even show the Database Tools option under the Tools menu.
Is there someone with specific knowledge that can provide any enlightenment? Would be much appreciated.

If I have a column named "Login" in a SQL Table (I am sharing with another application) that I am using a stored procedure to acquire the information from, how can I trranspose its name to match code already written in a Web App to get the data.
There is a web app already created that has the followig code to get the data from the database
Dim strSQL ast string = "UsersSelectCommand"
intLoginID = objDataReader("LoginID")
My stored procedure is the following:
CREATE PROCEDURE UsersSelectCommand/* ( @parameter1 datatype = default value, @parameter2 datatype OUTPUT )*/AS Select Lastname, FirstName, Login from Users Order by LastName
GO
The stored procedure will return "Login" instead of "LoginID" that I am wanting. How can I modify the Stored Procedure to change the LoginID to Login.

Right this has to be a Micro$oft mess-up surely...?I'm running SQL 2k standard with SP3. I have a table which I'm tryingto query using a LIKE operator on a varchar field as follows....WHERE dbo.tbl_pm_projects.SeniorManagerID LIKE '%'....In actual fact the % is passed in by the application when the userselects "All managers" from the drop down list used to select theManager to filter by. If they select a manager's name from the listit becomes LIKE 'ajames' or whatever.BUT - the table currently contains 2972 records. If I take out theWHERE clause the SELECT returns all records - fine - but if I put thewhere clause in it returns only 1682!! I thought the % was meant tomatch, and I quote the SQL server Books Online files here; "Any stringof zero or more characters." Anyone explain to me whats going onhere?TIANiall

Does anyone know a function in SQL or how I can get the amount of characters of a field?
I have a column named NU_IPS wich contains data varchar type, that has a % symbol at the end, like 9.7% and so on... But in original table it can't be like this (it has to bem float type), I just want the number content, like this 9.7 For that I need in DTS put a query that convert it. That's why I need a function or something that can get the quantity of characters of each field.
So, It would be someting like this...
select substring(convert(varchar(getSizeField() - 1), nu_ipi), 1, 4) from dbo.t_STAGEAREACHAIR
It would cut always the last caracter, wich is '%'...
Any clues?
All posts are welcome, thanks.

Hello,
I have a table in sql server that has a field with numeric characters, i would like to select some but not all characters from this field and insert it into a new field. The field that i want to get some characters from has other characters that i dont need, It has a lot of zero's next to the numbers that i need. so far i created a stored procedure, but its not working. I want to extract the characters and insert them into a new field in the format "000.00" or "00.00". The values are either hunderths or tenths, which makes it difficult for me to decide which characters to ignore. Please see my SP created so far below:
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.spUpdatePaymentDetails
AS UPDATE dbo.PaymentDetails
SET NewAmount = SUBSTRING('00' + TransactionAmount, 1, LEN('00' +TransactionAmount) - 2) + '.' + SUBSTRING('00' + TransactionAmount, LEN('00' + TransactionAmount) - 1, 2)
GO
the character "." is not in the original field so therefore i would like to insert it into the new field.
Please help urgently.

Hi, all -
I'm trying to register a developer's 2000 pc from my 2005 pc.
i'm not sure this is even something possible from Dev Edition to Dev Edition- I can register a 2000 server just fine.
I can ping him. Both our systems have remote access 'on'. His server is (local), i've tried connecting to it by just entering his machine name and by using just the ip address. The error I get is "timeout expired. The timeout elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
Am I just not registering this properly? I entered just the ip address in the 'server' box. I am connecting as sa with the pw he gave me. When i connect to my server, I use the ip addressinstance. However, I am not sure what to use for the instance when all I see when I look at his machine is (local).
I haven't needed to do this before.
Suggestions?

I'm comparing two tables and need to compare the first 8 characters of one field in table A to the first 8 characters in another field in table B.
So instead of where 'John Smith' = 'John Smith' it would compare where 'John Smi' = 'John Smi'
I know I've done this before but can't find a good reference.
It's something like this when calling a query within a WHILE loop:
SELECT * FROM blah WHERE FID = '".$row['FID']."' AND LEFT('TRACK', 8) = LEFT('".$row['TRACK']."',8)
Am I close? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
I am developing a message board using ASP on IIS and SQL Server 2000, and I am running into a problem.
When a user enters their post, they enter their user name, subject, and of course all of their post content. Now the post content should be an unlimited number of characters since it could end up being multiple paragraphs.
I know I could just use an ASP file system object and write the text to a file, but I wanted to save all of these paragraphs as a field in a database table so I could pull it from the database so it could be edited by the user.
Is there a way to make a field be able to take in an unlimited amount of characters?
Or is this the wrong way to do things; is it bad to have an unlimited amount of characters in a table field? Should I stick to using the ASP System File Object?

I have a large table, tblMessage, which stores e-mail messages in textfields. I need to remove the carriage returns the data in these fields, but I have not yet figured out how to do so.I thought that the way to do this would be with the REPLACE function;unfortunately, of course, the REPLACE function cannot work with TEXTfields. I tried CASTing the text field to VARCHAR(8000); however, someof the rows have more than 8000 characters in the text field, so it bombs. Here is the SQL that I tried:selectmsgID,msgSent, msgFromType, msgFromID,msgSubject,REPLACE (CAST(msgMessage AS varchar(8000)), CHAR(13), '<BR>') ASnewMessage, msgOriginal, attIDinto tblMessageNewfrom tblMessageI'm at my wit's end. Truncating the text field to 8000 character is anacceptable option, but I can't even seem to be able to do that.I'm using SQL Server version 7.
