How To Modify This Code So That It Also Tests For NULL

Aug 2, 2004

Hi,

I'm trying to extend the usage of the code below. This method returns a variable of type SQLParameter and what I want is to accomodate even a check for a null in the parameter. This is a code which I got from one of my co-workers who isn't anymore working here. Any help would be appreciated. I do not want to throw an exception here when a field's type doesn't fall into one of the categories below. The method where this methos is called is the first part of my below code. Any help would be appreciated.

Part 1

private void AddCommandParameters(SqlCommand Comm, string sProcName, ArrayList aParams)

{

string sSQL = "sp_helptext @objname = '" + sProcName + "'";

SqlDataReader dr = this.GetDataReader(sSQL);

int i = 0;

if(dr.Read())

{

while(dr.Read())

{

//CLOSING PARENTHESIS

//When at the closing paren of the stored procedure's variable

//declaration, quit adding parameters.

if(dr[0].ToString().Trim() == ")")

{

break;

}

//ENDING PARENTHESIS

//When at the closing paren of the stored procedure's variable

//declaration, do nothing and skip to next record.

else if(dr[0].ToString().Trim() == "(")

{

//Nada

}

//PARAMETERS

//Add all the parameters listed in the stored procedure's variable

//declaration.

else

{

string [] sParamDef = dr[0].ToString().Trim().Split(Convert.ToChar(" "));

int cs = sParamDef.Length;

string st = sParamDef[0].ToString().Trim();

SQLParameter s = GetSQLParameter(sParamDef[0].ToString().Trim());

Comm.Parameters.Add(sParamDef[0], s.Type, s.Size);

Comm.Parameters[sParamDef[0]].Value = aParams[i];

i++;

}

}

}

else

{

throw(new Exception("Stored Procedure: " + sProcName + " NOT FOUND."));

}

dr.Close();

}

Method being called

How To Modify Schema At Run-time - My Code Or SQL Server?

Mar 27, 2007

Hi Smart Folks,
My SQL Server-based app will require generating a few tables at run-time, and, possibly, a new small database. Again, this is at run-time. Any advice on this? Should I build the functionality from the app, having my code generate all of the commands on the db to create what I need, or should I rely on SQL Server functionality (Scripts? SPs?) to do so. I am sure there is trade-off in one appraoch versus the other - I could use a tour of the trade-offs.
Thanks all!

Make Sql Function To Modify Data Like Sql Procedure To Improve Code Structure And Readability.

Aug 27, 2007

Now Sql Function can not modify data as Sql Procedure like other database, it's very troublesome at most case!
in most case, Sql Function is used to improve code structure then it can be maintanced easy! BUT only because it can not modify data, there are 2 troublesome way:

1. Make all callers in the path from Sql Functions to Sql Procedure. and the coder will cry, the code will become very
confusional , and very difficult to maintance.

2. Divide the Sql Function into a thin CLR wrapper to call a Sql Procedure, can only use another connection, BUT can not be in the same transaction context And the code is ugly and slow.

You should not give limitation to Sql Function, should just limit the using context of Sql Function!

The sql code is more difficult to read and maintance than norm code(C#), then the improving code structure and readability should be one of your most important task, that's why microsoft!

Null Field On Concatenated Code

Uniqueidentifier Field In SQL With Null Value - Cannot Detect This In Code... Why?

Nov 3, 2007

OK, I use asp.net membership and have created a new table that links together related users by use of the uniqueidentifier field as a foreign key.  However, it is possible to link to a not-yet existent user (by their email) so that when that user creates an account and gets a guid, it will be updated into my table of related users and finalise the link.  Trouble is, I'm trying to stop people adding the same "pending user" multiple times, so in my BLL logic I look for the entered email address for the current user and I want to check on the foreign key (the GUID field) so that I can tell the user that they've already added this user, but they haven't signed up yet (if they haven't got a foreign user key with a guid in it, they haven't signed up yet).
However, when I check the foreign key guid value (shows as null in sql enterprise manager) for null values, it never goes down the "true" logic channel... what I mean is that I've debugged it, hovered over the item I've read (it says it is system.dbnull, which it is) and yet when I do "isDBNull(myGUID.Value)" it never equates to true!
Why not?

Java Code Returning Null Resultset

Oct 26, 2007

Hi,

Here's a snippet of my java code :

Code:

boolean b = statementSQLServer.execute("select ROW_ID from S_INDUST where NAME='InWire'");

resultSetSQLServer = statementSQLServer.getResultSet();

System.out.println("b = " + b);
System.out.println("Are there any rows ?? " + resultSetSQLServer.next());

This code is returning null resultset.

But when I fire the same query directly into MS SQL, it is returning the corresponding rows.

I dont know where i'm going wrong. But just to make things more clearer, here's my connectivity code :

Code:

Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
connectionSQLServer = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:dm", "user", "pass");

statementSQLServer = connectionSQLServer.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE, ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);

Please help me out if possible....

Speed Tests (in Vs. Specified)

Jul 30, 2007

Hi Everyone -

We were discussing select speeds the other day,
the question comes in at...

what is faster, a standard query with specifies the search critera
i.e. select * from xyz where a='A' or a='B'
or is the IN a better way to go....

select * from xyz where a in ('A', 'B')

we ran the tests in performance analyzer,
but they were the same results....

maybe i'm smoking the stuff - but i thought the
useage of the IN causes a full table scan for each
of the items in the in clause

please advise

take care

Web Tests Of Reports Working For Anyone?

Feb 11, 2007

Has anyone been successfull in creating a Web Test with Team System to test a Reporting Services report? I can record the test just fine but I can't run the test without errors being reported. I suspect that the session state has to be parameterized but I have no clue how to do this.

Why is this so hard? Why aren't there samples for this kind of thing? I've been all over the SSRS and Team Test forums and the MSDN site and can't find anything about Reporting Services reports being tested with Team System Web Tests.

Remote Connection Tests Fine, But Nothing Works On The Page Itself.

Mar 26, 2008

If this post belongs somewhere else I appologize. I have spent several days trying to solve this problem with no luck. My site is online. Hosted at NeikoHosting. I can connect to the database remotely when adding a datacontrol. It tests fine. But when running the page it won't connect. Even if I go in and change the Web.Config connection string to a local Data Source provided to me by Neiko, it still won't work. It just won't connect. Here are the two connection strings in the Web.Config, minus my login info: Only the remote string will pass testing. Neither works on the site. <add name="yourchurchmychurchDBConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=MSSQL2K-A;Initial Catalog=yourchurchmychurchDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=me;Password=pwd" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

SqlDataSource Set To Stored Procedure, Tests OK In Wizard, Does Not Return Data When Executed

Apr 27, 2007

With a  Gridview Control, I set the SqlDataSource to be a stored procedure in a Sql Sever database.
Using the wizzard to configure the datasource, the test returns lots of rows.  After completing the wizzard, the gridview control does not show the column names in the VS2005 designer.  For the gridview column headers the values are Databound Col0, Databound Col1, Databound Col2, ....)   This tells me I have a problem.
 I tried the same thing with a  simpler stored procedure. This test stored procedure does not call anything else, takes several input parameters, returns rows.  The column names show in the gridview control as expected.
 So I am trying to figure out why the first case of gridview with sqldatasource is not working and the second case works .  The stored procedure that is not working with my gridview calls multiple inner stored procedures and has #TEMP tables. My complex stored procedure ends with Select * from #Temp.
 Could the calling of other inner stored procedures and use of #temp tables contribute to the problem?  If yes then what is the strategy for using a gridview and loading it with the data that the complex stored procedure returns?

Problem With Isnull. Need To Substitute Null If A Var Is Null And Compare It To Null And Return True

Sep 20, 2006

Hey. I need to substitute a value from a table if the input var is null. This is fine if the value coming from table is not null. But, it the table value is also null, it doesn't work. The problem I'm getting is in the isnull line which is in Dark green color because @inFileVersion is set to null explicitly and when the isnull function evaluates, value returned from DR.FileVersion is also null which is correct. I want the null=null to return true which is why i set ansi_nulls off. But it doesn't return anything. And the select statement should return something but in my case it returns null. If I comment the isnull statements in the where clause, everything works fine. Please tell me what am I doing wrong. Is it possible to do this without setting the ansi_nulls to off??? Thank you

set ansi_nulls off

go

declare

@inFileName VARCHAR (100),

@inFileSize INT,

@Id int,

@inlanguageid INT,

@inFileVersion VARCHAR (100),

@ExeState int

set @inFileName = 'A0006337.EXE'

set @inFileSize = 28796

set @Id= 1

set @inlanguageid =null

set @inFileVersion =NULL

set @ExeState =0

select Dr.StateID from table1 dR

where

DR.[FileName] = @inFileName

AND DR.FileSize =@inFileSize

AND DR.FileVersion = isnull(@inFileVersion,DR.FileVersion)

AND DR.languageid = isnull(@inlanguageid,null)

AND DR.[ID]= @ID

SQL Server 2008 :: Linked Server Tests Fine But Query Does Not Work

Apr 16, 2015

Using a 32-Bit SQL Server 2008 Express on my LOCAL PC. I downloaded the Advantage 8.1 OLE DB Provider and created a linked server to a REMOTE Advantage 8.1 database server. There is no data dictionary on the Advantage server.

Here is my linked server:

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx', @srvproduct=N'Advantage', @provider=N'Advantage OLE DB Provider', @datasrc=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xxeccET', @provstr=N'servertype=ads_local_server;tabletype=ads_cdx;'--tabletype=’ADS_ADT’ (this test works too)
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=Null,@rmtuser='adssys',@rmtpassword=Null

Testing the link succeeds with above. Using “ads_REMOTE_server” instead of “ads_local_server” and the test fails. Here is my problem, using the following queries will not work. Perhaps it’s a permissions issue? When I specify my local credentials for the remote server in the linked server it still does not work.

SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY([1xx.1xx.xx.1xx], 'SELECT * FROM ActType')

OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "1xx.1xx.xx.1xx" returned message "Error 7200: AQE Error: State = HY000; NativeError = 5004; [Extended Systems][Advantage SQL][ASA] Error 5004: Either ACE could not find the specified file, or you do not have sufficient rights to access the file. Table name: ActType SELECT * FROM ActType".
Msg 7321, Level 16, State 2, Line 2

An error occurred while preparing the query "SELECT * FROM ActType" for execution against OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "1xx.1xx.xx.1xx".

Help With Converting Code: VB Code In SQL Server 2000-&&>Visual Studio BI 2005

Jul 27, 2006

Hi all--I'm trying to convert a function which I inherited from a SQL Server 2000 DTS package to something usable in an SSIS package in SQL Server 2005. Given the original code here:
Function Main()
on error resume next
dim cn, i, rs, sSQL
Set cn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cn.Open "Provider=sqloledb;Server=<server_name>;Database=<db_name>;User ID=<sysadmin_user>;Password=<password>"
set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
set rs = DTSGlobalVariables("SQLstring").value

for i = 1 to rs.RecordCount
sSQL = rs.Fields(0).value
cn.Execute sSQL, , 128 'adExecuteNoRecords option for faster execution
rs.MoveNext
Next

Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success

End Function

This code was originally programmed in the SQL Server ActiveX Task type in a DTS package designed to take an open-ended number of SQL statements generated by another task as input, then execute each SQL statement sequentially. Upon this code's success, move on to the next step. (Of course, there was no additional documentation with this code. :-)

Based on other postings, I attempted to push this code into a Visual Studio BI 2005 Script Task with the following change:

public Sub Main()

...

Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success

End Class

I get the following error when I attempt to compile this:

Error 30209: Option Strict On requires all variable declarations to have an 'As' clause.

I am new to Visual Basic, so I'm on a learning curve here. From what I know of this script:
- The variables here violate the new Option Strict On requirement in VS 2005 to declare what type of object your variable is supposed to use.

- I need to explicitly declare each object, unless I turn off the Option Strict On (which didn't seem recommended, based on what I read).

Given this statement:

dim cn, i, rs, sSQL

I'm looking at "i" as type Integer; rs and sSQL are open-ended arrays, but can't quite figure out how to read the code here:

Set cn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

cn.Open "Provider=sqloledb;Server=<server_name>;Database=<db_name>;User ID=<sysadmin_user>;Password=<password>"

set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")

This code seems to create an instance of a COM component, then pass provider information and create the recordset being passed in by the previous task, but am not sure whether this syntax is correct for VS 2005 or what data type declaration to make here. Any ideas/help on how to rewrite this code would be greatly appreciated!

How To Show Description In Report Instead Of Code (Desc For Code Is In Master Table)

Mar 28, 2007

Dear Friends,

I am having 2 Tables.

Table 1: AddressBook
Fields --> User Name, Address, CountryCode

Table 2: Country
Fields --> Country Code, Country Name

Step 1 : I have created a Cube with these two tables using SSAS.

Step 2 : I have created a report in SSRS showing Address list.

The Column in the report are User Name, Address, Country Name

But I have no idea, how to convert this Country Code to Country name.

I am generating the report using the Layout tab. ( Data | Layout | Preview ) Report1.rdl [Design]

Anyone help me to solve this issue. Because, in our project most of the transaction tables have Code and Code description in master table. I need to convert all code into corresponding description in all my reports.

Thanks in advance.

In my report i have CNAME parameter , which allows null value. I checked Allow null value check box in report parameter properties.

when i preview the report , it displays checked NULL check box beside CNAME parameter . I want to give some meaningful name(i.e.ALLCustomers) to this checkbox instead of NULL.

Is it possible through SSRS designer?

Integration Services :: SSIS Insert Non Null Value Into Null Rows

Jul 15, 2015

I have a flat file with the following columns

SampleID   Rep_Number   Product  Protein   Fat   Solids

In the flat file SampleID and Product are populated in the first row only, rest of the rows only have values for Rep_Number, Protein, Fat, Solids.

SampleID and Product are blank for the rest of the rows. So my task is to fill those blank rows with the first row that has the sampleID and Product and load into the table.

Subscription Issue With Null Default Parameter - Key Cannot Be Null

May 3, 2007

I have a report that is run on a monthly basis with a default date of null. The stored procedure determines the month-end date that it should use should it be sent a null date.

The report works fine when I tell it to create a history entry; however, when I try to add a subscription it doesn't appear to like the null parameter value. Since I have told the report to have a default value of null it doesn't allow me to enter a value on the subscription page.

Now, I suppose I could remove the parameter altogether from the stored proc, but then the users would never be able to run the report for a previous time period. Can someone explain to me why default values aren't allowed to be used on subscriptions when they seem to work fine for ad hoc and scheduled reports? This is really quite frustrating as most of my reports require a date value and default to null so that the user doesn't have to enter them for the latest data.

An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help

Returned SQLParam.SqlValue Is {Null} But Can't Test For Null?

Nov 5, 2007

I run a stored procedure for which I have a return variable. The stored procedure returns the ID of a row in a table if it exists:

m_sqlCmd.ExecuteScalar();

The m_sqlCmd has been fed an SQLParameter with direction set to output.
When the stored proc returns, I want to test it. Now when there IS a row it returns the ID ok.
When the row doesn't exist, in my watch I have:

m_sqlParam.SqlValue with value {Null}

I can't seem to work out how to test this value out.
I've tried several things but none seem to work.

This line compiles ok, but the following runs into the IF statement as if the SqlValue is null??

if (m_sqlParam.SqlValue != null)....
{

// I'm here!! I thought the watch says this is null???
}

Sorry if this is obvious, but I can't work this one out!!

Many Lines Of Code In Stored Procedure && Code Behind

Feb 24, 2008

Hello,
I'm using ASP.Net to update a table which include a lot of fields may be around 30 fields, I used stored procedure to update these fields. Unfortunatily I had to use a FormView to handle some TextBoxes and RadioButtonLists which are about 30 web controls.
I 've built and tested my stored procedure, and it worked successfully thru the SQL Builder.The problem I faced that I have to define the variable in the stored procedure and define it again the code behind againALTER PROCEDURE dbo.UpdateItems
(
@eName nvarchar, @ePRN nvarchar, @cID nvarchar, @eCC nvarchar,@sDate nvarchar,@eLOC nvarchar, @eTEL nvarchar, @ePhone nvarchar,
@eMobile nvarchar, @q1 bit, @inMDDmn nvarchar, @inMDDyr nvarchar, @inMDDRetIns nvarchar,
@outMDDmn nvarchar, @outMDDyr nvarchar, @outMDDRetIns nvarchar, @insNo nvarchar,@q2 bit, @qper2 nvarchar, @qplc2 nvarchar, @q3 bit, @qper3 nvarchar, @qplc3 nvarchar,
@q4 bit, @qper4 nvarchar, @pic1 nvarchar, @pic2 nvarchar, @pic3 nvarchar, @esigdt nvarchar, @CCHName nvarchar, @CCHTitle nvarchar, @CCHsigdt nvarchar, @username nvarchar,
@levent nvarchar, @eventdate nvarchar, @eventtime nvarchar
)
AS
UPDATE iTrnsSET eName = @eName, cID = @cID, eCC = @eCC, sDate = @sDate, eLOC = @eLOC, eTel = @eTEL, ePhone = @ePhone, eMobile = @eMobile,
q1 = @q1, inMDDmn = @inMDDmn, inMDDyr = @inMDDyr, inMDDRetIns = @inMDDRetIns, outMDDmn = @outMDDmn,
outMDDyr = @outMDDyr, outMDDRetIns = @outMDDRetIns, insNo = @insNo, q2 = @q2, qper2 = @qper2, qplc2 = @qplc2, q3 = @q3, qper3 = @qper3,
qplc3 = @qplc3, q4 = @q4, qper4 = @qper4, pic1 = @pic1, pic2 = @pic2, pic3 = @pic3, esigdt = @esigdt, CCHName = @CCHName,
CCHTitle = @CCHTitle, CCHsigdt = @CCHsigdt, username = @username, levent = @levent, eventdate = @eventdate, eventtime = @eventtime
WHERE (ePRN = @ePRN)
and the code behind which i have to write will be something like thiscmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@eName", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox1")).Text);cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@ePRN", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox2")).Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@cID", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox3")).Text);cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@eCC", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox4")).Text);
((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox7")).Text = ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox7")).Text + ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox6")).Text + ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox5")).Text;cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@sDate", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox7")).Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@eLOC", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox8")).Text);cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@eTel", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox9")).Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@ePhone", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox10")).Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@eMobile", ((TextBox)FormView1.FindControl("TextBox11")).Text);
So is there any way to do it better than this way ??
Thank you

Custom Code (Embedded Code) Question

Oct 16, 2007

Hi all,

Could someone tell me if custom code function can capture the event caused by a user? For example, onclick event on the rendered report?

Also, can custom code function alter the parameters of the report, or refresh the report?

Thanks.

Cannot Insert The Value NULL Into Column 'OrderID' -- BUT IT IS NOT NULL!

Apr 2, 2007

I am getting this error: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'OrderID', table 'outman.outman.Contact'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails." -- But my value is not null. I did a response.write on it and it show the value. Of course, it would be nice if I could do a breakpoint but that doesn't seem to be working. I'll attach a couple of images below of my code, the error, and the breakpoint error.
