How To Move Internal Tables To Another Filegroup
May 25, 2007
I mange several large databases with multiple files and filegroups. During some maintenance I was trying to remove a filegroup and its files and noticed that I was unable to. It appears that some service broker objects were created on my user defined filegroup.
Looking at the system tables I see several system tables on my user defined filegroup
SELECT o.name +'.' +i.name FROM sysobjects o inner join sysindexes i on i.id = o.id where groupid = 2
queue_messages_1255675521.queue_clustered_index
queue_messages_1255675521.queue_secondary_index
queue_messages_1287675635.queue_clustered_index
queue_messages_1287675635.queue_secondary_index
queue_messages_1319675749.queue_clustered_index
queue_messages_1319675749.queue_secondary_index
my normal tricks do not work as I am unable to even select from these tables.
How to I move them or get rid of them. I am not even sure what is created them as we are not using service broker in our application.

I will be moving production SQL databases (one is 25Gb, the other is 3Gb) to a new server. One of the reasons is the old server has only IDE disks while the new has raid (I don't know the configuration yet).
Database 1 has a primary and one other filegroup. I want to spread the disk I/O by moving table A to it's own filegroup on it's own disk.
For the purposes of testing I have
1. brought a database onto a test server (using sp_detach_db, copying the files and attaching using sp_attach_db)
2. created a new filegroup
3. created a physical file on disk, allocated space and associated with my new filegroup
my question is how do I now move table A into this file?

Hi all
I've found this problem working with a VLDB, six month ago when I install the DBMS (Win2k3 x64+sp2, SQL 2k5 x64 +sp2, 4 dual core processor and 12 GbRAM) I've got 10 disk (actually ten LUN from a Storage Area Network), each 50Gb.
I've put TempDB and Transaction Log on two separate 50 Gb disk and put the database on 8 different data file on the 8 disk; I've created each datafile with a size of 50 Gb (autogrowth disable), so my DB has 400Gb space in it's datafile.
After a while the datafile began to fill and we decide to add a couple more 50Gb disk where I decide to put to new datafile; now my db is around 430 Gb and I've got this strange situation:
The first 8 datafile now are almost full of data, and obviously they can't growth since they already occupy the whole disk.
The two additional datafile are relatively empty (about 15 Gb each).
As far as I understand now each time that SQL should write to the databse it writes only on the 2 new datafile, and I fear that this can affect performance.
I'd like to reorganize the space in order to have 10 datafile, each with 43Gb of data, but I didn't find any instruction/tool able to move data between datafile.
Anyone has any hint ?
Thank you in advance for any suggestion
Stefano

Hi,
How to move existing table(include its constraint and index) into a different filegroup using tsql in Sql Server 2000. We have 1000+ tables in our system and we are planning to move around 500 tables to a new file group, which is available on another SAN drive.

I need to modify a table to reside on a new filegroup and also point TEXTIMAGE_ON to that filegroup instead of PRIMARY. Apparently in the past, the only way to achieve this via SQL is to create a new table, copy over data, drop the old table and rename the new table to the original name. I found this solution in the SQL Server 2005 forum.
Is there any other way to alter this table in order to point the TEXTIMAGE_ON to new filegroup using SQL Server 2014? We are on Standard edition. The technique I am using is the drop constraint (with move option) and add constraint (to new filegroup) commands. The data and indexes move, but not the text data (it still is in primary filegroup).

We are running SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition (64-Bit) on Windows 2012 R2 Standard (64-Bit).
1. When to create indexes, before or after data is added? Please address Clustered and Non-Clustered Indexes.
2. To move indexes to it's own filegroup, is it best to create the NON-Clustered Indexes on the separate filegroup with code similar to the example below?
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_Employee_OrganizationLevel_OrganizationNode
ON HumanResources.Employee (OrganizationLevel, OrganizationNode)
WITH (DROP_EXISTING = ON)
ON TransactionsFG1;
GO
I have read the following links that states that if you create the Clustered Index on a separate filegroup, it would also move the base table to that particular filegroup. (So I take it that you ONLY can move NON-CLustered Indexes to a separate filegroup.)
Placing Indexes on Filegroups:
[URL]
By default, indexes are stored in the same filegroup as the base table on which the index is created. A nonpartitioned clustered index and the base table always reside in the same filegroup. However, you can do the following:
• Create nonclustered indexes on a filegroup other than the filegroup of the base table.
Move an Existing Index to a Different Filegroup:
[URL]
Limitations and Restrictions
• If a table has a clustered index, moving the clustered index to a new filegroup moves the table to that filegroup.
• You cannot move indexes created using a UNIQUE or PRIMARY KEY constraint using Management Studio. To move these indexes use the CREATE INDEX statement with the (DROP_EXISTING=ON) option in Transact-SQL.

What causes locks on the internal Service Broker tables? I notice in my service broker application that when a lot of messages are being passed around, there are a lot of locks being issued on some internal service broker tables (queue_messages_). Are the locks caused from RECEIVE statements being issued against the queues, or is it something else? Can anything be done to decrease the locking? In my current application, I am reusing dialogs and receiving messages from the queue in bulk rather than receiving the first one from activation. Is there anything else I should be looking specifically to do to increase performance?

Hi everyone,
Primary platform is 64-bit on A-P cluster.
Our needs are on yearly basis and on monthly basis. We're forced to keep up five years for the majority of the production tables.
In terms of years, I see three ways:
1.Create all the ranges for a FILEGROUP with a only NDF
2004, 2005, 2006 => FG1 => ONE.NDF
2.Create all the ranges for a FILEGROUP along with more than one NDF.
2004, 2005, 2006 => FG1 => ONE.NDF
TWO.NDF
3.Create each range to a FILEGROUP where there will be one NDF or (n) NDF
2004 => FG0=> ZERO.NDF
2006 => FG1 => ONE.NDF
2005 => FG2 => TWO.NDF
What is the best approach in terms of availability, performance and best practices? Maybe is a silly question, I'm sorry if it is.
As usual, thanks a lot for your time.

we like some of the advantages filegroups offer but wonder if the purpose is somewhat defeated if it is true that tables sitting on other filegroups still have to work with the same transaction log that the db's primary tables work with.

Hi,
I've read already every thread in this forum regarding this topic with no results.
SQLServer and the corresponding services are at actual update level. The reporting services worked for 4 months without this problem. Suddenly, most of the time all reports return an internal error (it is like 70-30 for internal error) not depending which render format is used.
The system logs (eventlog, iis) show no errors. The ExecutionLog of RS show rsInternalError.
Looking in the log files in RS log directory, there is following stacktrace:
w3wp!processing!1!05/11/2007-10:40:06:: a ASSERT: Assertion failed! Call stack:

As it seems, after an iisreset the first rendering always works perfect. HD space is enough.
Any ideas?

Hello all,
Ive been tasked with writing a SQL query to move information from 2 tables(old1 and old2) into 1(new). table new already has all the information from old1, but also has some additional columns that are encompassed from old2. Also some of the columns in table new need to be assigned a 1 or a 0 if the information is present in old2. Here is what I came up with:
UPDATE new
SET new.IsRentalLocation = 1
new.IsMainCampus = 1
new.IsLearningCenter = 1
new.IsStudentResource = 1
new.AlternateStateDisp = 0
new.Directions = tbl_old2.Directions
new.Catering = tbl_old2.Catering
new.Lab = tbl_old2.Lab
FROM new, old1, old2
WHERE new.CampusID = old1.CampusID
AND old1.LearningCenterID = old2.LearningCenterID
Does this look right? or should I be using an insert command?

hi,
I have a web hosting account with Network Solutions. I also have my databases hosted on their sql server 2005. (along with a few thousand other database which don't belong to me) . Network Solutions does not allow me to speak to their Technical Support. I must submit a request and they email me their response. Bottom line they are not going to help me with my problem.
I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect remotely to the server.
I have 2 databases. Currently all data is stored in database1
I need to move the tables with the data for my website forum from database1to database2 on the same SQL Server
I have already generated a script which creates the schema for the tables on
database2. The problem is moving the data. The web Host does not allow DTS
Here are the things they won't allow:
You can use all features of SQL 2000 (it is 2005) except for the following:
- DTS Packages
- Database Replication
- Mail Services
- XML Support
- Distributed Transactions
- Database Maintenance Plans
- Web Assistant
- Multiple Instances
I can't for the life of me figure out how to transfer the data.
I have tried copying and pasting the data and run into problems with Identity keys and constraints.
I tried a sql generator script to create insert scripts for each line of each table but it won't work. I'm not sure why.
Bottom-line I can't import and export directly. And I desperately need to.
Thanks in advance!

I am running SQL Server 2000.
I have about 300 tables scattered across 3 databases that I am trying to consolidate into a single database. There are other tables within these 3 databases that I don't wish to consolidate (so I don't want to copy the full database).
What are my options to move these tables to the consolidated database?
Are there options beyond, the pain and extensive run-time of copying from the DTS wizard into the new database (plus the indices won't copy will they?) or writing code that creates tables in the new database, populates them with data from the old tables and then deletes the old tables?
My understanding is sp_rename won't work with two separate databases --i.e., your destination db must be the same as the db of the object you are renaming. (if my understanding is wrong, that would seem to be the easiest way to accomplish this)
Thanks,

I'm trying to find a way to insert data from a TableA on ServerA into TableB on ServerB using SSIS in Visual Studio.
The specification I was given is basically
Insert INTO TableB AS (Select * from TableA WHERE NOT EXISTS on TableB).
I can't use a linked server unfortunately.
I wonder if it possible to move data from tables on a linked server to a "normal database"? What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to move data from 8 different tables that are dependent on each other through foreign key relationship.
Basically they have millions of rows in each table and they have data for the past 5 years. I want to move data for the past 120 days and move it to 8 new tables in the same database. So I created the new tables along with their relationships. Now I need to move in the order (parent table first).
The child table has 50million rows data to move
The intermediate tables have 10 mil 10mil 10mil and 40 mil 50mil and 20 mil rows to move
The parent table has 10 mil rows to move
if I choose to move this data through an SSIS package what is the best way? Or is there a better way to move this data faster?
I will be doing this move only once. After that I have maintenance purge jobs that will cleanup data on a daily basis.
