How To Omit Schema Name When Referrring To Tables?

Jan 9, 2006

Hi guys, please help.

What I did is :
Step1. create a Database named [Test], it's default owner is [sa]
Step2. create a User in Database [Test] named [kimliuTest], which maps
to the Login [kkhadkimliu] on this Database Server, it's a windows
domain user.
Step3. create a Schema in Database [Test] named [schTest], whose Schema
Owner is User [kimliuTest]
Step4. created two tables: [dbo].[t1] and [schTest].[t2]
Step5. run the script

ALTER USER kimliuTest WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = schTest

to set the default schema.

Now my problem is, when I try to run

select * from schTest.t2

, everything is OK, but if I run

select * from t2

the error message says:

Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Invalid object name 't2'.

why? I'm loggin in with my [kkhadkimliu] windows domain id , Active
Monitor also shows that. but the command does not work?

Yeah, it's a good habit to write the full name of the Table with Schema
name as prefix, however, we did our development in SQL 2000 and trying
to upgrade to SQL2005, so trying to avoid scanning codes and inserting
in thousand of places.

How could we omit the Schema name when referrring to Tables? Thanks.

ps. I posted in another topic days ago, but nobody is replying, when I
tried to bring it forward by replying myself, it failed. please help me
, thanks!

Apr 13, 2006

Hello, Is there a way to do a prior omit in a SELECT?

I currently have multiple selections separated by a GO, but I need to prior Omit the rows I selected prior

so I have

select * from mytabe where
Address <> ' ' and
Zip4 <> ' ' and
zip in ('12345')
Go

select * from mytabe where
Address <> ' ' and
Zip4 <> ' ' and
Purchcode in ('A','C')
Go

This continues for another 10 selections I need to constantly omit the selections made above.

Is there a way to do this in SQL?

Omit Rows That Have NULL Value

Sep 21, 2015

It's been a while since I last posted on here, about 4 years maybe more. Anyway I'm happy to be back. I have an existing query that I needed to add two columns to. I did that but now my dilemma is to have the query NOT return NULL values in a particular column (pd.premium_amount). I tried adding WHERE pd.premium_amount IS NOT NULL and that did not do the trick. I was thinking about trying to use CASE statement but didn't really see that as being an option. Below is my code.

USE [AmLink_DW]
DECLARE @Bil_Grps TABLE (bil_grp_id int, bil_grp_sname varchar(50))
INSERT INTO @Bil_Grps (bil_grp_id, bil_grp_sname)
SELECT *
FROM (

I don't know if I need some kind of varible or just lookup in another table. I have windows 2000, and same for SQL. I am trying to write it using SQL Query Analyzer.

Thank You,

Compare Schema Between Tables

Oct 6, 2006

In the process of purging data to history tables,
we wanted to make sure that no schema changes have been done
to the main or the history table.
So to ensure identical schemas, we use this function:

ALTER FUNCTION dbo.fnCompareTableSchema
(
@t1Name NVARCHAR(257)
,@t2Name NVARCHAR(257)
)
RETURNS BIT
AS
/*
Compares the schema of 2 tables
If the schema is different RETURNS 0
If the schema is identical between the two table, RETURNS 1
NOTE: system tables or non-existant tables that are NOT in INFORMATION_SCHEMA views will compare equal (RETURNS 1)
==================================================================================================================
SAMPLE USAGE:
DECLARE @schemaOK BIT
SELECT @schemaOK = dbo.fnCompareTableSchema('dbo.table1','dbo.table2')

IF @schemaOK = 1
PRINT 'TABLE SCHEMA IDENTICAL'
ELSE
PRINT 'TABLE SCHEMA DIFFERENT'
==================================================================================================================
*/
BEGIN
IF @t1Name = @t2Name
RETURN 1

-- check if schema is different
IF EXISTS
(
SELECT*
FROM
(
SELECTCOLUMN_NAME, ORDINAL_POSITION, DATA_TYPE
, COLUMN_DEFAULT, IS_NULLABLE
, CHARACTER_MAXIMUM_LENGTH, NUMERIC_PRECISION, NUMERIC_SCALE
, COLLATION_NAME
FROMINFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
WHERETABLE_SCHEMA = COALESCE(PARSENAME(@t1Name,2),'dbo') AND TABLE_NAME = PARSENAME(@t1Name,1)
UNION ALL

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Agent Job Report Omit Previously Sent Data

Nov 27, 2014

I have this report i setup as an agent job in SSMS; It's setup to run every 7 minutes and it only sends the report if data is present. I'd like to add the ability to omit any rows that were sent in the previous report.

This is what the script looks like:

if exists (select o.ord_billto, o.ord_refnum , o.ord_hdrnumber, o.mov_number, o.ord_status, o.ord_cmdvalue, o.ord_startdate
from orderheader o
where ord_billto in ('A','B','C','D')
and DATEDIFF(minute , o.ord_datetaken, GETDATE())<=7

[Code] ....

Also, why I can't seem to use IF ( Select [...]) > 0? When i try using that instead of IF EXISTS i get this error: "Msg 116, Level 16, State 1, Line 7
Only one expression can be specified in the select list when the subquery is not introduced with EXISTS."

Does DB-Restore On A Different Machine Omit User/login Information ?

Jul 23, 2005

Dear group,I am a DB-Administrator for a Company that creates and maintains asoftware solution based on SQL-Server and Crystal-Reports.The Crystal-Reports part uses the following method to present data.First a specific user (database authentification) is created with afixed password. Then Crystal Reports uses thisuser/password-information to login to the database and present or printthe data.I recently received a database from a customer of ours and i restoredit on my machine. It worked perfectly except that the Crystal Reportspart did not function at all (showing only blank reports).After dropping the specific user and creating the fixed password thething worked.So my question: does restoring a SQL-Server database on a differentmachine alter or eliminate login and user information ?Any reply will be highly appreciated.Greetings from ViennaUli

Querying Tables Without Schema Prefix

Dec 27, 2006

Hi all,

I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, and I have restored a database that was using SQL Server 2000 previous. All of that went fine - sprocs and tables/data all made it.

However, when viewing the tables in the object explorer in the management studio, all the tables are prefixed with the schema name (testuser - so the table names are like: testuser.pn_user). Now, all of the code I have queries the tablename only without prefixing testuser to it - but this doesn't work anymore (invalid object name.)

I've tested, and if I prefix the table names in my code with "testuser.", it starts working again, but would rather avoid doing this. Is there something I can do within Sql Server? I've made the "testuser" account "mapped" to the database I'm using (not sure what that means - I'm more of a software developer than a database guy.) Also, when I do "Properties" for the "testuser," the default database is set to the one I'm trying to query w/o the schema.

Any ideas?

Can You Backup And Restore Tables That Belong To A Specific Schema

Apr 30, 2008

Hi all,

does anyone know of a way in which you can backup and restore objects that belong to a specific schema?

So in this example, I€™d want to only back up and be able to restore the tables that belong to schema 1, leaving Schema2 stuff alone.

--DB
----Schema1.Table1
----Schema1.Table2
----Schema2.Table1
----Schema2.Table2

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I want to backup the tables and the data contained within.

Xslt Filters On Xml Output. Cdata-section-elements And Omit-xml-declaration Problems.

Sep 14, 2006

Hi All,

I'm using some xslt documents to transform the xml output of my Reports
but have come across two curiosities where the xslt filter seems to
behave unusually.

Firstly, I need the final saved file to have an xml declaration, which
I believe it should do by default. Even if I put
omit-xml-declaration="no" in the xsl:output tag I don't get an xml
declaration. At present we have a custom job that writes these
declarations back into the xml after SRS has saved it.

Secondly and more importantly, I need to have some of my output tags
wrapped in CDATA sections. I've tried using the cdata-section-elements
attribute, again with no luck.

my XSLT looks something like this (simplified for space)

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">

<xsl:output method="xml" encoding="utf-8" media-type="text/xml" omit-xml-declaration="no" cdata-section-elements="description"/>

<xsl:template match="/">

<xsl:for-each select="Report/table1/Detail_Collection/Detail">

<xsl:value-of select="@Description"/>

</xsl:for-each>

</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

The output is something like:

My first description text...

My seconddescription text...

What I want is:

My first description text...

My secondfirst description text...

All help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks - Andrew.

SQL Best Practices Analyzer Rule: Use Of Schema Qualified Tables/Views

Dec 17, 2005

SQL BPA says the following:"One or more objects are referencing tables/views withoutspecifying a schema! Performance and predictability of theapplication may be improved by specifying schema names.""When SQL Server looks up a table/view without a schemaqualification, it first searches the default schema and then the'dbo' schema. The default schema corresponds to the currentuser for ad-hoc batches, and corresponds to the schema of astored procedure when inside one. In either case, SQL Serverincurs an additional runtime cost to verify schema binding ofunqualified objects. Applications are more maintainable andmay observe a slight performance improvement if objectreferences are schema qualified."How important is to specify the schame (dbo. in my case) instored procedures? Will it really improve performance if I goand fix each object that is missing "dbo."?The problem is I have thousands and thousands of themwith no schemas. Before I invest a lot of time fixing themI am trying to determine if it's really worth it or not?Thank you

Data Access :: Retrieve Schema Information Of Columns Of Tables

Sep 10, 2015

Till recently we were using the following code to retreive schema information of columns of tables

Dim schemaTable = connection.GetOleDbSchemaTable( _
System.Data.OleDb.OleDbSchemaGuid.Columns, _
New Object() {Nothing, Nothing, tableName, Nothing})

Now instead of getting the name of table (which i was using as param for filtering) i'm going to receive a sql-query. Now my question is if I were to get a query like the following :

SELECT
[EmployeeID],
[Title] + ' ' + [LastName] + ' ' + [FirstName] AS FullName,
[BirthDate],
[Address],
[City] + ', ' + [Region] + ', ' + [Country] + ' - ' + [PostalCode] AS FullAddress
FROM [dbo].[Employees]

Then how can I retrieve the schema information of only the columns present in the query.

(Its possible that i might get a query with multiple tables with joints)...

Switching Schema Ownership Of Views, Stored Procedures, Tables

Feb 20, 2007

Hi all--I used the following type of script to migrate tables, views and stored procedures from 'dbo' to 'hqmsuser':
alter authorization on dbo.PK_T_PQ_MASTER to HQMSUSER
alter schema HQMSUSER transfer dbo.PK_T_PQ_MASTER
go

This was per recommendations from the BOL to use instead of the 'sp_changeobjectowner' procedure. I returned the following error:

Msg 15346, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Cannot change owner for an object that is owned by a parent object. Change the owner of the parent object instead.
Msg 15347, Level 16, State 1, Line 4

How do I find and change the parent object on this from 'dbo' to a non-dbo schema ownership?

Moving Data From One DB Schema To Another DB Schema Using SSIS

May 8, 2007

Hello,

I would like to use SSIS tool to move the data from one database schema to another database schema.

For example:

Source table has

1. UserName (varchar 20) (no null)

2. Email (varchar 50) (can be null)

Destination table has

1. UserID (uniqueidentifier - GUID)

2. UserName (varchar 50) (no null)

3. EmailAddress (nvarchar 50) (can be null)

4. DateTime

Questions:

1. What controls do I use in my Data Flow to make data move between databases with different data types and include new value in UserID as a new GUID and DateTime as a date (GETDATE)?

OLE DB Source, OLE DB Destination, Data Converson and .....

How do I insert Guid and Date at the same time?

2. I have many tables to do data moving. Any sugestions? How do I architect my project? If I create many data flows for each table - it will look complicated.

Please give me some advices here.

Thanks.

Why Would Tables Pulled In From ODBC In Access Be Different Than Tables In SQL 2005 Tables?

Jan 24, 2008

I'm new to my company, although not new to SQL 2005 and I found something interesting. I don't have an ERD yet, and so I was asking a co-worker what table some data was in, they told me a table that is NOT in SQL Server 2005's list of tables, views or synonyms.

I thought that was strange, and so I searched over and over again and still I couldn't find it. Then I did a select statement the table that Access thinks exists and SQL Server does not show and to my shock, the select statement pulled in data!

So how did this happen? How can I find the object in SSMS folder listing of tables/views or whatever and what am I overlooking?

Thanks,

Schema Changes

Nov 8, 2006

I have setup merge replication between two machines and the data seems to be updating when changed on either side ok. However I am now looking at how I can handle schema changes. I have found on msdn (although not tried) stored procedures that will add and remove columns, but what happens if I want to delete a table for example.

At the moment I can deselect the table being deleted from being published and then delete it or modify it in Management Studio, which then means I need to create a new snapshot which can take sometime before the change is updated on the subscriber.

Is there a better way to tackle schema updates that I have not found yet? Also, how will the subscriber cope if someone starts modifying data while synchronisation to the new snapshot is going on.

I am using SQL 2005 by the way.

Thanks

Track The Changes To Normalised Tables And Update The Denormalised Tables Depending On The Changes To Normalised Tables

Dec 7, 2006

We have 20 -30 normalized tables in our dartabase . Also we have 4tables where we store the calculated data fron those normalised tables.The Reason we have these 4 denormalised tables is when we try to dothe calcultion on the fly, our site becomes very slow. So We haveprecalculated and stored it in 4 tables.The Process we use to do the precalcultion, will get do thecalculation and and store it in a temp table. It will compare the thetemp with denormalised tables and insert new rows , delte the old oneans update if any changes.This process take about 20 mins - 60mins. Ittakes long time because in this process we first do the calculationregardless of changes and then do a compare to see what are changed andremove if any rows are deleted, and insert new rowsand update thechanges.Now we like to capture the rows/columns changed in the normalisedtables and do only those chages to the denormalised table , which weare hoping will reduce the processing time by atleast 50%WE have upgraded to SQL SERVER 2005.So We like to use the newtechnology for this process.I have to design the a model to capture the changes and updated onlythose changes.I have the list of normalised tables and te columns which will affectthe end results.I thought of using Triggers or OUTPUT clause to capture the changes.Please help me with the any ideas how to design the new process
