Can The Result From An EXEC(@sqlcommand) Be Returned To A Variable

Apr 11, 1999

Is it possible to get the result from an EXEC(@sqlcommand) statement into a variable?

As part of a SQL loop, it is necessary for me to run an EXEC() command to process an SQL statement. I have succesfully implemented this, but have been unable to get the results from the EXEC() statement into a variable to allow this data to be inserted into a table. Is this possible?

For Example (I know this doesn't work, but it is effectively what I am trying to achieve):

select @result = EXEC(@sqlcommand)

I could then use the @result variable in an insert statement to update a table with the results from the EXEC command.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Regards,
Wayne

Set Variable Based On Result Of Procedure OR Update Columns Fromsproc Result

Jul 20, 2005

I need to send the result of a procedure to an update statement.Basically updating the column of one table with the result of aquery in a stored procedure. It only returns one value, if it didnt Icould see why it would not work, but it only returns a count.Lets say I have a sproc like so:create proc sp_countclients@datecreated datetimeasset nocount onselect count(clientid) as countfrom clientstablewhere datecreated > @datecreatedThen, I want to update another table with that value:Declare @dc datetimeset @dc = '2003-09-30'update anothertableset ClientCount = (exec sp_countclients @dc) -- this line errorswhere id_ = @@identityOR, I could try this, but still gives me error:declare @c intset @c = exec sp_countclients @dcWhat should I do?Thanks in advance!Greg

Problem Assigning SQL Task Result To A Variable - Select Count(*) Result From Oracle Connection

Dec 26, 2007

I have an Execute SQL Task that executes "select count(*) as Row_Count from xyztable" from an Oracle Server. I'm trying to assign the result to a variable. However when I try to execute I get an error:
[Execute SQL Task] Error: An error occurred while assigning a value to variable "RowCount": "Unsupported data type on result set binding Row_Count.".

Which data type should I use for the variable, RowCount? I've tried Int16, Int32, Int64.

Thanks!

How To Return The Result Of An EXEC From A Function

Sep 21, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to find a way to return the result of an EXEC(*sqlstring*) from a function. I can return the tsql but not the result of an execute.

This is my function:

ALTER FUNCTION [dbo].[ReturnPickItemValue]
(
-- Add the parameters for the function here
@TypeID int,
@CaseID int
)
RETURNS varchar(max)
AS
BEGIN
-- Declare the return variable here
DECLARE @RTN varchar(max)

IF(SELECT IncludeDates FROM TBL_LU_PICK WHERE PickTypeID = @TypeID) = 1
BEGIN
SET @RTN = 'SELECT PickItem I +
CASE D.IsStartDateEstimated
WHEN 0 THEN CAST(StartDate as varchar)
ELSE CAST(dbo.ReturnEstimatedDate(D.IsStartDateEstimated, 0) as varchar)
END +
CASE D.IsEndDateEstimated
WHEN 0 THEN CAST(EndDate as varchar)
ELSE CAST(dbo.ReturnEstimatedDate(D.IsEndDateEstimated, 1) as varchar)
END

FROM TBL_LU_PICK L
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick_Items I ON I.PickTypeID = L.PickTypeID
INNER JOIN TBL_PICK P ON P.PickItemID = I.PickItemID
LEFT JOIN TBL_PickDates D ON D.PickID = P.PickID
WHERE L.PickTypeID = ' + CAST(@TypeID as varchar) + '
AND P.CaseID = ' + CAST(@CaseID as varchar)
END
ELSE
BEGIN
SET @RTN=
'SELECT I.PickItem
FROM TBL_LU_PICK L
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick_Items I ON I.PickTypeID = L.PickTypeID
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick P ON P.PickItemID = I.PickItemID
WHERE L.PickTypeID = ' + CAST(@TypeID as varchar) + '
AND CaseID = ' + CAST(@CaseID as varchar)
END

RETURN @RTN

END

Each time I try " RETURN EXEC(@RTN) " or something similar I get an error.

I have tried executing the tsql and assigning the result to a varchar and returning that varchar but i get an error.

Anyone with any ideas?

Linked Server Problem With Exec @result=myproc

Jan 31, 2002

I'm having some weird problems with calling remote stored procedures.

Two servers, both windows 2000 sp2, both running sql 7 version 7.00.961.

Server A is actually a cluster, but server B is a development server and not a cluster.

First off, server B can link to server A, but server A can't link to server B. We get a can't create connection error. We've used the client network utility to specify tcp/ip for both. I'm using the link settings as SQL Server connection (rather than an odbc connection) mapped to the sa user id and password. The password is blank on server B though.

I can run a remote stored procedure on server A from server B fine. I get the proper response back too. I can select anything from any database on A from B without trouble.

But here's my problem: If I use exec @result=ServerA.MyDB.dbo.myproc from server B, @result is always null. If I run MyDB.dbo.myproc from server A directly, @result comes back with the proper value.

I tried using an OUTPUT argument but it has the identical results. If I run it on server A, it works. If I run it from server B, the output argument is null.

Just for grins, I tried setting the @result value to 0 before calling MyProc. It didn't come back null, but it came back as the same value I set it before calling the procedure.

I verified that the sqlagent user has full permissions to the temp directory. TMP and TEMP both point to the same ..localemp directory, and it has full permissions in that directory.

Does anyone have any idea of things I can try? Is there a known bug with cluster services? I don't think this is happening when server B links to another server that isn't clustered.

Transact SQL :: How To Store Result Of Exec Command Into Temp Table

Apr 7, 2013

I wanted to insert the result-set of a Exec(@sqlcommand) into a temp table. I can do that by using:

Insert into #temp
Exec(@sqlcommand)

For this to accomplish we need to define the table structure in advance. But am preparing a dynamic-sql command and storing that in variable @sqlcommand and the output changes for each query execution. So my question is how to insert/capture the result-set of Exec(@sqlcommand) into a temp table when we don't know the table structure.

Can't TABLE Variable Be Used In EXEC Statement In Stored Procedure

Feb 8, 2008

Hi

I've used a temporary table in the stored procedure

I've created it as DECLARE @Temp TABLE (id INT)

in select clause I've used this temp table through the joins..

But I've also used a varchar variable to store my criteria...

which I'm building in the stored procedure

so inorder to use it in the where clause I used

EXEC ('SELECT ....................

FROM @Temp T

LEFT OUTER JOIN ...
LEFT OUTER JOIN ...
WHERE ' + @Criteria )

Unfortunately this is not working.
Giving the errror

Must declare the variable '@TempT'.

I had to use Temporary table using #, which I feel is really waste of memory...

Is there a way by which I can use my Table variable in the EXEC statement.

Thanks In advance

How Do I Use A @variable To Hold On Value Return From An Exec ('string Command') Statement.

How do I use a @variable to hold on value return from an exec ('string command') statement.

Example for:

set @OldOwner = 'USERNAME'

select @cmd = 'select uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
exec (@cmd)

How can I use @OldID to hold on UID return from this statement.

When I try use:
select @cmd = 'select @OldID = uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
then I'm getting a error message: @OldID not declare.

Stored Procedure Using A Declared Variable In Insert Query (inline Or Using EXEC)

May 14, 2008

Hello,

I have a stored procedure where I run an insert statement. I want to knwo if it is possible to do it using a variable for the table name (either in-line or with an EXEC statement without building a string first and executing that string. See examples of what I am talking about in both cases below:

I want to be able to do this (with or without the EXEC) :
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECLARE @NewTableNameOut as varchar(100)

Set @NewTableNameOut = 'TableToInsertInto'

EXEC(
Insert Into @NewTableNameOut
Select * From tableToSelectFrom
)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can not do the above because it says I need to declare/set the @NewTableNameOut variable (assuming it is only looking at this for the specific insert statement and not at the variable I set earlier in the stored procedure.

I can do it like this by creating a string with the variable built into the string and then executing the string but I want to know if I can do it like I have listed above.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECLARE @NewTableNameOut as varchar(100)

Set @NewTableNameOut = 'TableToInsertInto'

EXEC(
'Insert Into ' + @NewTableNameOut + ' ' +
'Select * From tableToSelectFrom'
)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not an issue for my simple example above but I have some rather large queries that I am building and I want to run as described above without having to build it into a string.

Is this possible at all?

If you need more info please let me know.

Result From Sql Task In Variable

Feb 21, 2008

i need to know how many rows are in a certain table and store this value in a variable in order to process this variable later in the package. of course i can build a data flow task within a row count component but as far as i understand it's necessary to read all data from a data source in order to use the row count component. now the question is if it's possible to use a sql task in the control flow and put a select count(*) statement within the task and then write the result of this select statement into a variable. shouldn't that be much more faster than using a whole dataflow for this problem?

Simplest Way To Get A Query Result Into A Variable

May 25, 2004

Hello,

I am interested in what the simplest was to get a query result that will only ever have one result (ie One column, one row) into a variable. An ugly way is to use a cursor that simply fetches the first row but that seems to be a horrible way to do it and it has sometimes major drawbacks sometimes (mainly if I have to dynamically choose the table). Surely there is a better way?

What do you think? A simple example would be nice.

SQL Task, Result To Variable Errors Out

Jan 31, 2008

I have looked thru several similar threads with errors like this, but have not found a resolution. I have a SQL Task that runs this query:

Code Snippet
select NetRevenue = cast(sum(Base_Price + AL + MI + PO) as dec(10,2))
from Lancelot.DataWhse.dbo.GrossMarginDetail
where tran_date_key <= ? + ' 23:59:59' and
label_group <> 'X' and
not (ar_ship_key in ('S999991','S998101''S998102')) and
Document <> 'Cust Bal Debit Memo'

There is a parameter mapping of "User::LastSaturday" of type date. I also have a result set with a result set name of "0" with a variable name of "User::GrossMargin," which is defined as a double in the package. The task has a resultset type of Single row, and at the moment the answer that is returned is 66228637.10.

If I change the package variable to a type of string it of course works, but then I cannot do comparisons against it. I have step by step manually copied this from an existing DTSX, so I am baffled why this isn't working, and I'm ready to throw myself under a truck!

I also tried to bring it in as a string, then convert it in a script task, but I cannot figure out how to reference the input and output variables. I can't seem to find any relevant docs on how to do that...

If anyone has any ideas, I and my sanity would greatly appreciate it.

Store SQL Task Result As Variable

Mar 18, 2008

Help - I am having a moment!

I am building a simple package that looks at the results of a sql query, prior to running the next step.

Basically Outline and settings

SQL task

Result Set: Full result set

SQL Source: Direct Input

SQL Statement: Select Count (*) FROM X

Parameter Mapping

Variable Name: User::C

Direction: Return Value

Data Type: Numeric

Parameter Name: NewParameterName

Result Set = NewResultName: User::C

Precedence Constraint

Evaluation Operation: Expression and Constraint

Value: Success

Expression: @C > 0 ( I originally tried User::C and received an error message)

Execute SQL Server Agent Job

If step one results greater than 1, then execute the SQL agent job (SRS Report)
Using this setup I receive an error message stating "

TITLE: Package Validation Error

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Error at Package: The expression "@C > 0" must evaluate to True or False. Change the expression to evaluate to a Boolean value.

Any thought or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How To Use Variable To Receive The Result Of A Select Statment. ?

Jun 21, 2002

Good morning;

My Problem is :im my transaction i use insert code like the following :

" Insert into TAB1 (F1,F2,F3)
select a.F1,b.F2,b.F3 from TAB2 a,TAB3 b
where a.KY1= b.KY1 and b.ORDN in
(Select ORDN from OTAB where USER_ID = 'MIKE')"

In order to optimise my code ,
instead of using a subquery in my select
(I have different insert in my transaction with the same subquery).
I would like to DECLARE a varibale which will contain the select of the Subquery.
and then use it im my different insert. some thing like this.

" BEGIN TRANSACTION
DECLARE @OrdSelect int
Set @OrdSelect = (Select ORDN from OTAB where USER_ID = 'MIKE')
Insert into TAB1 (F1,F2,F3)
select a.F1,b.F2,b.F3 from TAB2 a,TAB3 b
where a.KY1= b.KY1 and b.ORDN in @OrdSelect
COMMIT Tran "

I know that the @OrdSelect will receive the last value of the select not an array of values. which will make my transaction incorrect.
I dont want to use Cursor to resolve this issue Too.

Thinks.
