How To Register Local Server Under Database Engine In SQL Server 2005?
Dec 3, 2007
I want to create a database on my local machine and work with it. But I am not able to see the name of my local server under "Database Engine" in the list of "Registered Servers".
Options I tried:
(1) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "Update Local Server Registration"
(2) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "New" -> Server Registration.
In "New Server Registration" Window, in "Server Name" drop down I clicked "Browse for more" but still in "Browse for Servers" window, I am not able to see the name of my local server in "Local Servers" tag under Database Engine.
(3) If I do File -> Connect Object Explorer -> Connect to Server window in "Server name" drop down box, if I click "Browse for more", I am able to see local server name eg. "XYZ" under Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services but not under "Database Engine"
Please help me create a new database engine in SQL Server 2005 or list my local server under "Database engine" ?
I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.
Current Setup Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)
It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.
The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.
This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.
Will this work. 1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company. 2.Move the database to the server. 3.Setup the users permissions. 3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.
So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?
Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.
One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.
Hello I've just installed 'SQL server 2005' and it installed the components like .Net2.0 and visual studio 2005 . before installing them I had uninstalled sql server2000 . I ran SQL management studio and tried to connect and makin' servers it doesn't allow me to connect or making any new servers...... it gives me this error Cannot connect to local. Additional information: An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. ...... error:53)
Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my PC and during the installation I have created a predefined instance (I have used Windows autentication). I could use correctly SQL Server till some days ago, when I changed the password of my PC login profile. Now, when I open SQL Server, if I click on the "Connect" button, the following error message appears (I translate it from italian version)
Unable to connect to "CARLO" Further information: An error has occurred while you were trying to establish a connection to the server. When you connect to SQL Server 2005, this error can be generated because SQL Server doesn't allow remote connections under the predefined settings. (provider: Provider Named Pipes, error: 40 - Unable to open a connection to SQL Server) (Micorsoft SQL Server, error:2)
I'm sure that the error raises because I have changed my PC access password (the program worked correctly before), but in the "Connect to Server" window the user name and the password text boxes are disabled, so I can't insert the new password... Can you suggest what have I to do?
I am not able to start the sql server 2005 database engine services...
Sql server 2005 server is installed in one machine(SERVER) and we have 10 client machine connecting to the server
When i try to start the service from the Service.msc in the SERVER i am getting the following error
===================================
Cannot connect to KEYSKILL.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and I installed it under "Local System" on Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.
I understand that there are issues of course that occur with this, however I can't seem to understand why what I'm doing isn't working. I'm not using this on any server, just to test out ASP.NET 2.0 applications - nothing more.
I'm getting this error:

I've installed this via a mixed authentication (as suggested by www.wrox.com).
I tried enabling the TCP/IP and named pipe connections, just as previous people have done, but it hasn't worked. Nor has enabling the SQL Browser.
Is this possible to connect do the Database Engine (on sql server 2005 on XP platorm - file *.mdf (not mobile *.sdf)) from win CE 5.0?
I tried to do this : ConnectionStringSQLServerCE = "Data Source=WORK_STATION\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=dbMachines;Integrated Security=False;Password=Panel;User ID=Panel";
SqlCeConnectionCE = new SqlConnection(ConnectionStringSQLServerCE);
SqlCeConnectionCE.Open();
but I catch error: catch (PlatformNotSupportedException ex) €žPlatformNotSupportedException€? I noticed that I see server because when I use: ConnectionStringSQLServerCE = "Data Source=WORK_STATION\SQLEXPRESS";

I have an ASP.NET application that runs under the development server. Before deploying to my host I wanted to test it under IIS. I set up a virtual directory under IIS, but when I try to open the home page I get an error Unable to open the physical file "E:CDiskLocalWebSitesDIWSchedulingApp_DataDIWDB.MDF". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".and a code dump showing that the code is breaking at the open connection. A little research on the error indicates that IIS does not have permission to execute the database operation. I can not find any information on how to give IIS this permission in SQL Server 2005 Express. Any guidance would be appreciated.
I have a very basic console application whose sole purpose is to query a database on the same local computer. When i run the application, i get the error message below: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'someDomainSomeUserName'. Below is my connection string also myconnection_string = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Reporting SystemApp_Datasafetydata.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"). After some googling, some post pointed to deleting a user folder at : C:Documents and SettingsmyusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server DataSQLEXPRESS but still deleting that folder and restarting the machine doesn't help and i also have remote connections enabled. Help is really needed. NOTE: The same application runs on a different computer with XP but fails on the Pc with windows server 2003.
After i reinstall SQL Server 2005 Express on my local machine, and then tried to attach AdventureWorks_Data.mdf into Database, it gives me the following error: Mark up:
I tried to reinstall the Adventureworks.msi installer and reattach again in SQL Server 2005 Express, it gave me the same error. I then deleted both SQL Server 2005 Express & Adventureworks, and then restart my pc and reinstall again, it still gave me the same error. Error: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional Information: An Exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL Statement or batch. I have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on a windows server 2003 standard edition. I have configured the windows firewall to allow exceptions for sqlservr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe. I have enabled remote and local connections using tcp/ip & Named Pipes through the Sql Server Surface Area Connection utility. I am able to telnet into the server with: telnet <server ip> <1433>.
Here is the strange part: I am able to connect to the Sql Server remotely from a development machine via Sql Server Management Studio Express, but I am unable to connect to the Sql Server from the same development machine by registering it in Sql Server Enterprise Manager...Is it possible to register SQL Express through Enterprise Manager?
When registering the SQL Express DB in Enterprise Manager I tried both just the (IP Address) of the server and the (IP AddressSQLExpress) as the server/host but I am getting the following errors from enterprise manager:
Just the (IP Address) as the server/host: Invalid Connection. ConnectionOpen( Invalid Instance())
(IP AddressSQLEXPRESS) as the server/host: Sql Server does not exist or access denied. ConnectOpen(Connect()).
Any idea why I can€™t register/mount the instance remotely in Enterprise Manager but I can in Sql Server Management Studio Express?
SP2 refuses to install for the Database Engine because €œthe previous upgrade did not complete€?, i.e. it detects a suspended installation. The same thing happened to me when I installed SP1. I then remember opening the maintenance dialog and completing the setup, after which SP1 installed just fine.
When I try to do the same thing this time, I€™m presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option, which when I run it reports the installation completed successfully. However, in reality the installation still remains in suspended mode for whatever reason. If I reboot and open the maintenance dialog, I€™m still presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option. I€™ve even tried to run it more than once, but it doesn€™t help. Needless to say, SP2 still refuses to install.
I don't know why the installation is in a suspended state. I know every part of SP1 installed successfully in the end, and the computer never crashed during the installation. I've been using it every day since then, without any problems. All other parts of SP2 did install successfully.
I created a feedback entry on Microsoft Connect, where you can find the log files created by Windows Installer. The URL is: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259606
I am trying to run MS SQL Server Management Studio Express. According to what I read, I can connect by selecting Database engine, then on server name, I put my computer name sqlexpress. I am using Windows Authentication. Every time, I get:

Hi, I've been trying to fix this error for two days! and I really need the advice of the experts please! Computer XP Professional Service Pack2, SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 (both Standard Edition) ConnectionString: <connectionStrings> <add name="MyConnectionDB" connectionString="Data Source=(MyServerSqlServer2005);Initial Catalog=MyDB;User ID=sa;Password=PasswordforSA" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings>
C# code string myConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["MyConnectionDB"].ConnectionString; SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(myConnectionString); myConnection.Open(); Here I get the error: {"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"}
What I checked so far:
ServerName and Instance Name OK! Database, Username and password OK! SQL Server 2005 Surface Are Configuration - Remote connections using both TCP/IP and Pipe Names OK! SQL Configuration Manager - Protocolos Enabled (TCP/IP, Pipes, shared) OK! SQL Server Browse running and active OK! Am I missing something? I never had this problem with SQL Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestion you can give me. Sasa
I just installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition from my company's DVD. It was installed with the setting of using both Integrated windows authenitication as well as basic named authenication. I installed all the options too: Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server compact edition, and Integration Services. When I look at services there are: SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Browser. All of which are running. Something that took me offguard was the installation did not ask me to provide an SA password. Other than that, the install looked like it went good.
I was able to connect to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 using the SQL Server Management Studio. I could connect with SA, or connect with Integrated Windows Authenication. Whoohoo. Off and running! As a matter of fact, for the SA account I could use any password and it would still log me in.
First thing I did was I went in to the copy wizard to attempt to copy a database from a server on our network to my local box. First it asked me for the remote server. Then when I specified my local instance in the wizard, the wizard complained that my local instance was NOT SQL Server 2005. Doh! This I didn't understand. I figured maybe I need to check for MS updates. Sure enough, I found that ther was a SP2 and then a hot-fix for that SP2. I applied both. Now I cannot connect from SQL Server Management studio to my local instance of SQL Server 2005 database server. I get the following error:
"An error occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)"
However, I went in to see what other services I could connect to, and here's the results:
Analysis Services : OK! Reporting Services (Windows Auth/Basic/Forms) : NG "The reporting Services Instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)" SQL Server Compact Edition : NG "The database cannot be found. Check the path to the database. [ File Name = CCG092 ] (SQL Server Compact Edition ADO.NET Data Provider) Integration Services : OK!
I can connect to other SQL Server databases on our network. However, just not my local one. No one on the network can connect to me either.
I even turned off my windows firewall and still no luck connecting to my own.
So something really went wrong when I applied SP2, however, admittedly from the error message when I tried to use the copy wizard, something was probably already wrong.
SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(myConnectionString);
myConnection.Open();
Here I get the error: {"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"}
What I checked so far:
ServerName and Instance Name OK! Database, Username and password OK! SQL Server 2005 Surface Are Configuration - Remote connections using both TCP/IP and Pipe Names OK! SQL Configuration Manager - Protocolos Enabled (TCP/IP, Pipes, shared) OK! SQL Server Browse running and active OK! No Firewall
Am I missing something? I never had this problem with SQL Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestion you can give me.
I'm creating an app and have SQL Server 2005 Express installed. Most of the hosts now offering SQL Server 2005 are a bit pricey compared to those only offering 2000. Will I have any difficulty uploading my site and running the db on SQL 2000? Thanks in advance.
I found that when I install MSDE, then I can create/edit database objects for MSDE database in Visual Studio 2003 Server Explorer, but when I try to create/edit database objects under the default database created by the SQL Server 2000 installation, I cannot do these tasks as no option for these tasks appear when I right-click on the database object in Server Explorer. Anyone knows why this is happening?
I try to copy database from remote SQL Server(6.5) to our local SQL Server(7.0). I try this way: First, in Enterprice Manager, I try "NEW SQL SERVER REGISTRATION" using "Register SQL Server wizard". The remote server give me the IP, login name and password. then, I try connect option by "login using SQL Server". But I got message say:"specialted server not found, Connection open,create file". some times say:"client server access denied..." some times say:"timeout". What's going on here? So, I can not get going on with "Import data wizard".
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Any answer would be of great assistance!
Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.
How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?
I am having seriuos problems getting VoIP traffic into and out of my network via the ISA server which we just newly installed.
My network topology is such that the phones i am using for the VoIP service, sitting inside my network and behind the ISA server, have to register to some remote proxy server outside my network and as soon as it registers i can begin using the service. The VoIP service is on the platform of SIP and uses udp ports 5060 and 8080.
I have permitted the necessary ports on the ISA server for the service being UDP port 5060 and 8080 but still cannot get my VoIp traffic through the server.
Please i need some help here as regards something i am supposed to do or something i am not doing right on the ISA server to permit my traffic.
I am a newbie to this Microsoft ISA server and i hope you all understand
I have been creating applications using SQL Express and uploading them to my hoster. No problems there. Now, I feel I'm ready to the next step and would like to start using my hoster SQL Server. I have created a database in their server, now how do I move my created SQL Express Database to their regular SQL Server? Is there a way to run a tool against my local DB and create a script to run in my hoster? What is the best practise here? Your help is appreciated.
I am really new to SQL Server. I have trying to create/register a server. I came to know that I need to go to Query Analayser and then register a Server. Then in Enterprise Manager I need to register a Group. I did everything.
But...
Here is the error.
Unable to connect server. Server: Msg 17, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] [Shared Memory]
SQL Server does not exit or access denied.
I really appreciate if u can give me steps. Thanks, Padma.
During my install of SQL Server 2005 Developers edition, I got an error that Reporting Services could not connect to SQL Server. After completing the installation I was unable to connect to the local service using an domain account (that's an admin on my machine) or the SA account. I've retried uninstalling and reinstalling numereous times and no success. I was able to login to the IP addess with the SA account only.
I did set the config for remote access...
Shared Memory is Enabled
Named Pipes is Enabled with Pipe Name = \.pipesqlquery
TCP/IP is Enabled, Listen All, IP Address active and enabled for 127.0.0.1 and network address, TCP Dynamic ports not set
When I login with an IP address and an local admin account I get this error:
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)
When I try to login to the machine name with a local admin account I get this message:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10061)
When I try to login to the machine name with the SA account I get this message:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10061)
I can login with the SA account using the IP address. I can login with a local admin account for 127.0.0.1
Any ideas what's going on? Why doesn't uninstalling and reinstallingh fix this? Is there a tool that will purge the registry of all remnants after an uninstall? Any help would be appreciated.
Good day, my apologies if thes question has been asked before, but I can't find anything with the exact same situation...
Just managed to successfully install SQL Express 2005 (in place of MSDE2000), kept the same database, which upgraded without a problem. I can connect to my local SQL server, but only if I use my full PC name, I get 'SQL server not found out access denied' and 'Specified SQL server not found' whenever I try with . or (local) or localhost.
My main issue is that I have a million and one batch files for all the features I use most to simplify my work, which now will not run as they all specify (local) instead of my PC name. Looking on the MS Support pages, I've tried various different options, none of which seem to make any difference at all.
Here is my current setup:
SQL Express 2005 - version 9.00.2047.00 - (installed with 'Default Instance', not 'Instance: SQLExpress') Win XP Pro SP3 - version 3264 All of the following are enabled in 'SQL Server Config Manager' - Protocols for MSSQLSERVER: Shared Memory Named Pipes TCP/IP VIA
I also attempted to install the latest MDAC (version 2.8), and it tells me these components are already part of SP2.
Could anybody tell me if I am missing something, or need to install / update anything further? I am at a dead end with this now.
I installed 2005 Developer edition on a local workstation in our lab. I can connect to a network SQL Server with it just fine. But I do not have a local instance of SQL Server on this workstation.
How do I create a local instance of SQL Server? (box is WinXPPro-SP3)
After accepting the defaults for this installation, I noticed that there were no "local" instances of SQL server available, whereby I could go out and create my own test databases locally or copy a few tables from a production server over to my local box for testing. I'm looking through the books online and do not see (maybe I missed it) the steps to creating a local instance for setting up a workstaiton as a 'test' environment.
I have SQL Server Management Studio. I can access some databases to which I have been given access to. How can I create a sample database to which I can upload excel files as data fields.
This is for testing purposes. Any help appreciated.
SQL Server 2005 SP2 (build 3054)Consider the following scenario:- A complex multi-statement table valued function is created. Let's callit dbo.tfFunc(@Param1, @Param2)- A SELECT statement is executed, that calls the above function twice,each time with a different set of parameters. In pseudocode:SELECT <column list>FROM dbo.tfFunc(1, 2) AS f1<some JOIN operatordbo.tfFunc(3, 4) AS f2ON f1.col = f2.colINNER JOIN dbo.Table1 AS t1ON ...etc.The exact statement is probably irrelevant, as long as the same table-valued function is called twice (I have observed the issue in two verydifferent statements calling the same function). The statement isexecuted in a SNAPSHOT isolation level transaction, although this mayalso be irrelevant.- The statement continues executing for a long time. If sp_who2 is run atthat time, the following row is returned for the statement connection(only relevant columns are shown):SPIDStatusBlkByCommandCPUTimeDiskIOLastBatch63 SUSPENDED63SELECT2928268308/31 18:17:37The statement appears to be blocked by itself. If sp_lock is run at thattime, the following rows are returned:spiddbidObjIdIndIdTypeResourceModeStatus63213166246410TABSch-SGRANT63213166246410TABSch-MWAITIt appears that SQL Server waits indefinitely trying to obtain a schema-modification lock on a resource which already has a schema-stability lockplaced on it by the same connection.The following is pure speculation, but it seems reasonable to assume thatthe server has materialized the result of the first call to the functionusing a temporary table in tempdb, and is trying to materialize theresult of the second call using the same temporary table (same ObjId insp_lock results).I do not know why this does not cause a deadlock error.Unfortunately, I do not have a simple repro script for this. The actualcode is rather complex. While I can devise a workaround, this does looklike a bug. I am posting it here before submitting a bug on Connect, incase anyone can shed some light. We have a SQLSERVER database that is replicated to many users.We are currently in an expansion phase where we need to make changesto the server database. Each time we rollout a new release, we aredeleting the local replicating database and recreating.Is there any way to automatically transfer the changes from the serverto existing local database without deleting?
